You, rut,Shawn, and Marcus might not be in combat anymore but you guys have an incredible impact on the lives of many Americans. With all due respect to all the guests, these keep getting better and better with every guest! I listen to TNQP but didn't realize ALOT of the stuff Mr. Rutherford dealt with. If everyone strived to be half as positive as him, the world would be a better place.

    • @johndunbar2393

@discorperted Doesn't have anything to do with "expecting" my friend. In my mind it has to do with use of energy. Dealing with negativity, and negative people, is beyond exhausting, and a waste of energy. So I don't do it. Part of being a better person today, than I was yesterday, is finding the good in life, instead of focusing on the bad all the time, like countless people do. I heard a saying years ago, when I didn't deal with shit, thus making me a negative person. It came from my boss at the time. After I spent a good portion of the day bitching and pissing and moaning about God knows what, I'm sure it was nowhere near as big of a deal as I was making it (this was 20 something years ago), it was just me being negative, he looked at me and said "The grass is only green, where you water it". Needless to say, it took several years for that to sink in and make sense. Now I live by that saying. Take care.

@discorperted Ah, good old internet posters and their assumptions. I feel bad for people with your mindset. Hopefully someday, for your sake, you will break free of it. I hope you have a good rest of the day! (and you can think that's being fake all you want. I know the truth.)

I could listen to another 12 hours of these two talking. Mike, you're a wiser knuckle-dragger than you give yourself credit for; inquisitive and probing, the signs of every true humble scholar (although I'm sure that's the last thing you would call yourself). And Rut seems to approach life with such a great blend of hardened disclipline and Lebowski-ism, it makes for a combination of a really great represenation of y'all's SEAL community *and* just a very relatable "dude." Big ups to you both. Your hooyah is inspiring.

In my early 20's I couldn't imagine not working out 5-7x a week. I had a full time job and was still committed to working out. As person in my mid 30's with a career, I take what I can get exercise wise. This usually means 2-3x a week with occasional weeks where I'm unable to work out at all due to scheduling constraints. Well along comes coronavirus and I'm back on 7x a week. Take what you can get, stay as healthy as you can while getting done what you have to get done. That's all you can really hope for.

I think the most humbled that I had ever been was a time when I was invited to have a beer at the local American Legion my assistant chief from the fire department. He was stopping in at the Valpo Legion and he was going to do some paperwork for some friends.
When I arrive the parking lot was full and I found his truck so I know he was already inside. I also noticed the parking lot was full.
As I was trying to walk in the doorway had a line coming out of it. All these Korean era and Vietnam guys and a few guys from Iraq and Afghanistan were there to see John. He's an advocate for patients who are forgotten by the VA. The entire Hall was packed and these guys were there to see John who was feverishly and jamming paperwork so these guys could get what they deserved. I realized what was going on then and I had to go sit down and I didn't want to interrupt him.
Later on that evening they were having a question-and-answer period and one gentleman stood up and I don't think he was a from World War II but he was not in the best of health he began crying thanking the assistant chief saying how grateful he was and how it been instrumental getting the benefits that he'd been denied for so many years. And I'm not saying I was crying but if I was I wouldn't have been the only one and that Hall that evening.
I went back the next day and told the guys at the fire station what I had seen and that I couldn't fathom how cool it was to see this guy doing what he was doing for people that he'd never met. That's about as humble as it gets.
John you've always had my friendship but you also have my respect as well.

Really great to see and hear a sincere interview/show with Rutherford. He has a really interesting story. Sometimes he can be a little bit the military-version of Robin Williams - never stops joking/screaming/making sound effects, which is fine I guess. But it kind of clouds his story and sincerity. Thanks for a really good episode! Really interesting!

Explaining the Dog mindset and memory "piggy bank" bank along with association cleared so many things up for me. I tried to train a few upland bird dogs and they would act so well during training but would completely fall flat in the field when the hunting was not good. Dumb dogs will just run around and act like kids but when a good dog is getting his reward (birds) his brain goes to mush. Using your explanation the dog simply thinks he's doing something wrong because he is not succeeding in getting the birds subsequently gets an attitude problem.

Rutherford is a laugh riot. The guy always cracks me up. I like personalities like his because they’re so opposite to mine. God doesn’t give you anything you can’t handle. His experiences were exactly what they were all supposed to be because anything different would’ve changed who he was. And that changing would’ve altered the fabric of the universe. This goes for all of us. But, let us remember it’s a thin line. There’s always a chance for the universe to trip us at any time. Free will is powerful. But so is God, so, what do I know?
His mention of something taking eternity to accomplish reminds me of the word ‘apeirophobia’. The definition of that word is “fear of infinity or infinite things”.

Getting board with college life I decided I would go active Duty Army in 1987. I had already been in the Army Reserves two years wile attending college. However, the army said they did not have a Billet available for me to go active Duty.
My Brother was a Second Class in the Submarine Force. He Asked why don’t I join the Navy? I told him there was no way I was going to stay in a steel tube for 120 days without surfacing. So, I decided to pursue a career in Professional Diving and attend course in Louisiana. Then my brother sent me a clipping from the Navy Times about the Dive Farrer program. I was released from the US Army Reserves and left for US Navy Bootcamp in Feb, 1987 in Orlando, Fl. Two of us where in Divefarer in bootcamp. A tall lanky dude from East Tennessee was going into EOD; and I was going Navy Seals. The two of us worked out with the Seal Master Chief three days a week.. We both passed the BUDS Screening test and passed. My 6th week of Navy Bootcamp My 6th wee of Bootcamp, I was told to report to Medical. They told me that my ear test at the MEPS was bot good enough to be Physically qualified for the Navy Seals. They sent me to a Specialist, but he also agreed that I had a hearing range loss in my right ear (probably due to some poor control of muzzle blast from the guys I was hunting with as q kid.
I was NPQ for Dive Farrer and Admin told me I had to pick another Rating. Luckily I had a high ASVAB score; I picked Aviation Electronics Technician. Went to some fabulous highly technical A school and Advanced Avionics School , and was selected for Air Crew. I went to Naval Air Candidate School in Pensacola. After nearly three strait years of Technical Schools and Air Crew Training, I served as an In Flight Technician with Fleet Air Recon Squadron 3 out of NAS Barbers Point, HI. At the time I did not know about asking for a Navy Physical Waiver. I always have that feeling of Failure from not getting into Buds; and what if I had made into BUDS? My favourite people that I listen to are David Rutherford Mike Ritland Shaun Ryan and Marcus Luttrell, but this is the best episode of any podcast I've ever heard two fuckin legends in action amen.

I worked 7 to 5 then worked for my self at night and weekends and I hate paying any one to do anything I have a crazy drive to fix everything and I am now cutting side work out and getting help with repairs or upgrades on house or cars and spending more time with family

I always feel so bad for Rut whenever I listen to this or when he tells his story. He’s a great guy and it sounds like he really got shafted early on in his career in the teams.

Thanks Mike. I'm a first time listen/new subscriber. Great interview. I've been listening to Rut and Marcus's podcast for a long time and Regardless of who the guest is I always feel uplifted afterwards because of Rut's personality. TNQ has been my long time fix for when I feel like my demons are getting the best of me, and now I feel like I've found a new place for that same Fix, here with Mike drop. Thanks again for helping lead the community.

Great interview, I’d love to meet either and or both of these guys, I’m certain they don’t feel or act like hero’s , but they are, along with all the other frogmen.

I pray and hope that you never have to bury your child, that’s humbling....NEVER QUIT, they wouldn’t want you to...
