Jade is so stand off-ish & Cat is so bubbly but they r best friends. Jade will try to make Cat happy even when she doesn’t want to. Plus she can’t stand to see Cat cry. Robbie needed a serious therapist more than anything. He had a lot of internal issues that just amplified external problems. If he fully incorporated Rex into his personality he would have been a much more balanced individual and a lot better socially. Add a slightly better fashion sense and he would do really well.

    • @Saskaruto16
      @Saskaruto16 3 года назад +37

@@dorothymontrose6371 Psychologically Rex could be considered Robbies "Shadow". While you don't want to act on your darkest impulses, it's very important to acknowledge your shadow and incorporate it. This allows you to respect it and therefore yourself for what you are capable of. Without it you aren't really engaged in proper moral behavior because you don't have the same understanding of choice, just fear of consequences.
Robbie chooses to deliberately separate himself from his shadow and this causes a lot of internal issues like his lack of confidence and self worth. This hurts him in everyday life because it makes him a lot more socially awkward and causes him to latch on to people like Kat in a "creepy" way. It also causes him to separate himself from his instances of lashing out by having "Rex" do it instead of Robbie. Look at his attack on Trina as a prime example. Robbie doesn't have to morally acknowledge what he did at all because it's completely separated through Rex.
For a better explanation of the shadow and its incorporation check out these videos of Jordan Peterson talking about Yungs idea of it and JBPs own incorporation of his shadow:

True. You cannot really judge all characters equally when they have different purposes.
Jade is meant to be a mean character in the show, and it's not that her behavior is good, but it isn't seen as bad since it is so common.
Whereas when other characters like Tori or Robbie do something bad towards someone else it is seen as bad since they are not meant to be bullies, those behaviors are not common in them and that is why they are much more notable.
I am not justifying Jade's actions, but what she does doesn't have the same impact compared to if another character did it because she is meant to be mean.

These analysis videos are always interesting because you have to take in everything on the screen in the show, even though there are most definitely bits that were thrown in during the show for comedic of episodic purposes and not intended to further a character. We as the audience have no sure fire way to say what is canon and what isn't, so you have to take it all in, and that's my issue with many sitcom type shows: after a while the creators care less and less about making complete characters and just care about the laughs or story of that one episode, so you start to lose some of the realness of certain characters.
That being said, in regards to Robbie, I don't think much realness was lost because characters like him to exist in real life (bar the use of the puppet). Many people portray themselves to be harmless but then express their toxic traits in ways that allow them to not take full responsibility, this is commonly seen when a person will say "I have no filter for jokes, I make jokes about everyone and everything" and then say a blatantly sexist/racist/homophobic/etc statement and then based on the REACTION they say "oh it was a joke, you know me!" so they can not take responsibility for the statement. I believe that is what Robbie does, except he expresses through Rex as said in the video, and that concept is very present in real life.

Matt Bennett made an otherwise kinda terrible character half likeable and tolerable because of the humour he brought to the role. Similar to David Schwimmer with Ross in Friends.
However I also think Robbie also had one of the best character developments on the show. In the last season he had outgrown Rex and become more mature, grounded and confident but while still being his dorky and weird self. He got a pretty girl to go to the dance with him and she genuinely enjoyed his company. He acted normally and didn’t say or do anything to weird her out. AND he kissed Cat, rather smoothly too.

I honestly felt like Robbie was such a Jewish stereotype. His personality is just "gross awkward nerd who's allergic to everything." Also, I think him celebrating Christmas wasn't because his family doesn't practice Judaism, but because the writers forgot he was Jewish. This is extremely common in TV shows. They mention that the character is Jewish a couple times, give them stereotypical traits, but them have them celebrate Christmas in all of the Christmas episodes. Writers don't give a damn about doing even the tiniest bit of extra research to realize that just because Christmas can be secular, doesn't mean it's universal.

Same - the constant emasculation of Robbie also feels like a subtle act of antisemitism in my opinion and it also makes the ethnic change of himself in Rex make a more bizarre sort of sense - if Robbie is projecting traits on to Rex his choice to make Rex “urban”/racial might be a way of making sense of the cognitive dissonance that comes with experiencing antisemitism while also being white - I really wish someone would write fanfiction exploring him but I have yet to find any so I’m working on one right now, although it also is exploring Cat’s trauma

I absolutely loathe how Robbie was written because he had potential to be one of the most relatable characters in the show. Unconfident, self-loathing, bullied, bad home life, questionable friends, late bloomer, etc. but unfortunately they felt it was better to make him an anti-hero or a punching bag. All those characteristics I listed about him - each kid age 12-16 (prime demographic) watching the show could likely find one robbie-esque trait to relate to. Imagine seeing him as an example of someone overcoming a rough abusive home life or destigmatizing mental illness. Instead we got the one thing every unconfident boy in high school doesn't wanna see on TV - the one guy he can relate to being portrayed as a weak closet pervert. Not someone breaking social boundaries around mental illness, not someone overcoming disadvantages in life, just an unconfident guy with sub-par friends.
I never understood why Dan Schneider's shows feel the need to portray boys who work hard in school but don't meet society's standards of attractiveness as being perverted or weak or losers. Funny because actors he humiliated in that trope like Josh Peck, Nathan Kress, and Matt Bennett at least enjoy moderately decent careers now while we all know what Dan "better tie her she is a fighter" Schneider is allegedly like.

But we and the other characters really do know that rex can't be real, and that Robbie IS controlling rex ( he is a puppet) so we know that he's almost bullying himself, and he HIMSELF is giving himself a toxic companion. It's obvious rex could be the person Robbie wants to be ( Cool, liked, and is good with girls) but rex is a bully, so it's strange.

I don't know much about Victorious but my brother watches it, I've always felt bad for Robbie, I mean yeah I guess he was misogynistic and a bit pervy but some of the girls weren't bette

I'm surprised you didn't mention the time when Robbie sold Rex and got a new puppet and, if I recall correctly, the new one was very kind to him, the opposite of Rex, which threw Robbie for a loop. I think it's worth talking about how Robbie seemed to hate receiving kindness and missed receiving mistreatment. It could be he thinks he doesn't deserve it, or he just thinks, due to his lack of love at home, that the mistreatment is the norm and the kindness is the strange.

Do you re-watch the entire show each time you do an analysis?

Hope you get your vacation, but to answer your question, I would live to see a cat and Robbie video in the future. They are my favorite ship on the show.

I think he had the second-most solos in the show and that's saying something. Probably the more depressing of the characters even more than Trina. Still lucky he didn't get expelled and/or arrested or shot and killed since he admitted stalking the daughter of an LAPD detective and probably others. He would have been Metooed out of Hollywood Arts in current times. I kind of wish they did a spin-off with Robbie and Jade going to a new high school. Also, did any of the characters have loving, caring parents?

Also, I think Rex is a symptom of a split personality. An epitomical product of trauma. Thanks for all your videos! You can see I binge them 😂 some requests for the future? Analysis of Glee characters? Orrr
-analysis of Carly Shay (she wasn’t as generic as she seemed, I think)
-Spencer Shay (there was something fascinating, but ‘off’ about him
    -Sikowitz
    -Jade and Cat’s relationship
    -Carly and Freddie’s relationship

Robbie was my favorite character by far in this show. I loved how he could say what he wanted through Rex and honestly your explanation on his family life I believes sums it up pretty well, but yes please omg Robbie and kat analysis ^^ happy holidays
