Very good video, Tom. I had the 85GM 1.4 (2 of these, actually) and I ended up getting the Sigma 85 1.4 DG DN ART, in the end. This happened when my first 85GM had the weirdest 'scratching' audible noise when focusing. So loud I was convinced I had a faulty lens. My replacement was exactly the same. Picture quality is superb but, when I ended up taking this 2nd lens back, I tried out the new Sigma DG DN ART 85 f1.4 and this is a much better lens as well as £500 cheaper!!! The focus is much quieter, much faster (in lower light conditions) and it is absolutely surgical in it's sharpness. Sony is a great lens, 3-4 years ago, but the Sigma is better! However; if you (like me ) use the A7R IV, you simply must try Sony's FE135mm F1.8. This is lens heaven!!!!!!!!
I have got the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM which are better than any of those 85mm lenses (in fact of ANY lens under 300mm!). If I was to get a 85mm lens, I would go for the Sony 85mm 1,8, but I will rather have the much more versatile Voigtländer 65mm 2.0 APO-Lanthar Macro lens which will do exellent in any kind of photography and it have a very high resolution which go very well with my Sony A7RIV.
Thanks for your video. I made the decision to get the SIGMA 85mm f/1.4 ART i am very happy with my purchase. I was about to click order for the Sony and last min decided to check out some reviews online on the Sigma. I ordered it from BHP on Thu and got it in time for a shoot on Sat the same week. Image quality and sharpness fantastic !!
Looking forward to my new Sigma 85 landing at the end of the month. I sold the GM at the start of the year as it was a backup to my Sony 85 1.8 and never really loved the AF performance on the GM for the type of weddings I shoot. I love the lightness and the compactness of the Sony 85 1.8, but I have never loved the rendering and I hope that the new Sigma can keep up in the AF department to the Sony 85 1.8 and have nicer rendering as well. Now we just need Sigma to update the 35 1.4!
I also have the Sony f/1.8 and since sending the Sigma f/1.4 back, I've realised just how good the Sigma was! My latest shots with the Sony f/1.8 have a lot more chromatic aberration and just aren't nearly as sharp wide open. I'm really looking forward to selling the Sony and getting the Sigma in my bag!
Just ordered the Sigma and have my Sony 85 1.8 up for sale ($425). Looking forward to using it with a pre-ordered a7IV expected the first of January, 2022.
@@tomirwinphoto How's your experience with the a7 IV and new Sigma 85mm f/1.4 going? My a7 IV will arrive soon, and am seriously considering the new Sigma 85mm. Edit: I'm especially interested in how the lens performs with videography and EyeAF. Also, if have you discovered if EyeAF for photos on the A7 IV has an issue with front focusing on the eyelashes instead of the iris of the eye?
@@huyked Mine works great. It was an upgrade from the excellent Sony 85 1.8. The sigma is sharper at 1.4 than the Sony was at 1.8. Then there's the amazing Sigma bokeh and it focuses quick enough that I used for shooting combat sports.
Ive made thousands of images with the samyang, and it has been fantastic. Zero issues with AF, and for what i shoot, and tint variation hasn't been a concern. With that said, i did own the samyang 35/1.4 and it was completely unreliable, so its very believable large copy variation is present. Perhaps that is expected with cheap, small manufacturers. I will actually be selling my samyang 85, for the Sigma. I want all my prime lenses to have the same form factor (aperture ring, manual switch, custom button etc) as it makes far easier having the same work flow for all lenses.
Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! I agree - looking at other reviews online show mixed results. Most people don't seem to have any issues with their Samyang lenses, whilst others suffer from weird AF problems like I did with my original copy. But, like I said in the video, the new copy I received didn't show any issues. 🤷♂️
at 5:53 I'm not only looking at how good the lens keeps the subject in focus, I'm also looking at how smooth the lens is pulling focus. I do this by looking at the out of focus area in the background. To me, the focus pull by the af on the Samyang & the Old Sigma was very jumpy in the background. The new Sigma was also not entirely as smooth as I'd like it to be. But the Sony seemed very smooth. No jumpyness in the background. It looked like a perfect manual focus pull, even tho it was AF. Which is exactly how I want my lenses to perform with AF. As much as I want to buy the cheapest lens, I feel it is worth it for me to spend my $$ on the best investment.
Thanks for the review. I personally do not like Samyang (plastic build, etc). I do shoot the FE 85 1.8 and have the new Sigma on order. I'd like to see Sigma re-do the 105 1.4 (which I recently sold and my back in thanking me) and 135 1.8. That said, I'd like to see a 135 shoot out.
Thanks! I totally agree - I'd love to see a lighter 135mm. My Sigma 135mm doesn't get used all that often because it's so heavy. Such a shame too as it's a great lens and I love the focal length.
I have had all these lenses and have worked with these lenses for a long time. the new sigma lens is the best point blank all the test we did sigma always had the most checkpoints. The Samyang is number two for me and it has everything to do with price but if you mess around enough with the Samyang you can still get those great quality shots from the Samyang
From a price perspective, the Samyang is great value for money. But the trade off is reliability issues, which for me as a full time photographer just isn't worth it. I need my lenses to work flawlessly (or as close to it) every time I pick them up. If they don't, it could damage my reputation and lose me money.
@@TomCalton These are all valid points as I started my business using a Samyang 85 1.4 so I know the obstacles this lens provides. I started my business in video so I used manual focus for 99% of the jobs. Didn't really use 85 then but did use other Samyang lenses that couldn't be trusted for focus but man when it did the pictures are almost identical to an 1800 lens. I personally own the sigma 85mm 135mm and the sony 20 700 2.8 these are the lenses I use for work. So I understand the need for lenses to work at peak potential. The reason I watched your video was to see if anyone is having issues with the sigmas in back lite sittuations still haven't found a fix for that.
So...here's a crazy thought... I use my Sony 85 1.4 GM for most portraits 'because' it is slightly soft. On models with perfect skin I love using my 90mm Macro lens, seriously, sharpest lens I've ever used. when I'm shooting normal members of the public having a super sharp beast like the 90mm is actually making my post processing a little bit more difficult because every flaw in pin sharp. The Sony 85 'feels' like it gives me just a little less to do in post.
Thanks for your comment - really interesting thought! For my wedding and corporate work, I think sharpness is key. If something is just out of focus or too soft, it won't make the cut. However, for posed portraits where you have the time to finesse things, I totally see your point on having a "softer" lens. Me personally, I'd still rather have the super sharpness and have the option to tone it down a bit in post if required, but that's definitely not going to be the same for everyone.
I have the Samyang 24mm f2.8, 35mm f1.4, and 85mm F1.4. Major issue with the 85mm f1.4 no one thinks about.... Because the color cast of the lens is strangely orange-ish, when you use flash with the Sony cameras, the white balance is auto set to Flash WB. THIS RESULTS IN YOUR IMAGES COMING OUT NOTICEABLY ORANGE. This is not really a problem when using auto white balance or RAW. But if you shoot JPEG and flash, it's a headache because you HAVE to use a gray card to white balance.
Thanks for this input Oscar - very important to know if anyone shoots JPEG for sure. Not to mention, if you shoot with two cameras, having one lens with a noticeable orange tint can be a proper ball-ache to process. It just adds additional steps to your workflow, which isn't great when you have 1000's of images to edit for a wedding or something.
Thanks! I really appreciate all the comments - it all really helps the channel to grow! If you haven't seen it already, check this video out - you might find it handy: ruclips.net/video/OKfyLzCdXhw/видео.html
I have encountered the same issue with my new Samyang 85 on the latest firmware, the focus just randomly locked. It does produce great images and for the price I paid £409, I can't complain too much.
Thanks for your comment! Must be a quality control thing. For me, it's a deal breaker. If I turn up at a shoot and my lens just locks up my camera then that's potentially a disaster - especially at something like a wedding!
Thanks for the review- I own the Samyang 85 1.4 and I'm not satisfied with the sharpness at 1.4 ... considering to buy the new Sigma based on your review :)
the review is awesome, but the outro is the best bit, bro. Just when you think, "that's cool, I'll go and get the new Sigma..." bam, right out of the blue, a spot of creative / presentation genius. LOL
Sony Hong Kong is having a huge discount on the 85GM until the end of August. It will now set you back at HK$9,990 VS Sigma HK$8,000 at launch (US$1 = HK$7.75). Although the GM has been on my radar for years, I decided to put my money on the Sigma DG DN after watching and reading countless reviews and comparisons. Not only is the Sigma a lot sharper across all apertures, it also doesn't have the annoying colour fringing issues that the GM has. The icing of the cake is the 200g weight difference. Never would have thought Sigma could beat Sony at their own game.
I had the 35mm Samyang and had to sell it in the end - I shoot weddings and found the yellow tint to troublesome when all my other (sony) lenses didn't have it at all.
I totally agree. One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that by itself, the yellow tint is slightly annoying, but easy enough to edit out. However, if you shoot weddings and have two camera bodies with, say, the Samyang 85mm on one and a Sigma 35mm on the other, the difference in colour cast between the two lenses would just be infuriating when it comes to batch colour grading images. As it stands, all of my Sigma glass is fairly consistent, so it makes colour grading the hundreds of images I edit for a wedding pretty quick and painless.
Hi im new to photography planning to buy an 85mm lens and not sure if i'll go for sigma or the sony 1.8.. i use it for posting on facebook, instagram or maybe for printing soon.. almost all reviews show that the new sigma 85mm is sharper and my question is will the sharpness of the sigma still be better and noticeable when i post it on social media even though instagram and facebook have photo compression? Should i save my money and go for more expensive sigma?
I actually compared these two lenses here (ruclips.net/video/aSXwkwjSaCU/видео.html) If you're only ever going to post your images on social media then save your money and get the Sony f/1.8. It's great lens and your followers definitely won't notice the difference when viewing them on social media. Hope this helps!
5:53 Props to your guy model for walking at the same pace all those times! I wish I could have seen the brick wall, with the new Sigma, to see if video has the distortion auto fixed (if it's even possible for video), or if that's just a photo feature.
The Sigma 85 DN is still a bit pricey considered 56 DN is only 1/3 of the price and Samyang 85 is only 1/2. I guess we're just spoiled with all these E-mount third-party options.
The Sigma is definitely not a 'cheap' option, but considering that it's sharper, smaller, lighter, and £500 cheaper than the Sony, it's pretty good value for money - relatively speaking.
So,,Can we say this new sigma better than master bokeh 105mm F1.4??Regardless of weight& size and price?!!🤔cuz i just focus the better result... thanks
Any thoughts regarding the Sony 85 1.8 FE? ~250g lighter, ~1/2" shorter, ~half a stop darker at F1.8, & ~$600 cheaper than the new Sigma 85 DG DN. Of particular interest to me since the 85 1.8 FE is currently $90 off in a local shop til the end of August 😅.
Hey, thanks for your comment. You're definitely not the only person asking about this comparison, so you'll want to keep any eye out for next Friday's video (4th Sep 2020) as I'm going to be comparing the Sony 85mm f/1.8 to the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 👍
Thanks! I use PixaPro CITI600 Pro light (amzn.to/3geD1MW). They're pretty good for shooting on location. Or if I can't be arsed to bring along big lights I use Godox V860II flashguns (amzn.to/32b7q9D).
"Samyang weird yellowish tint"; well I think Samyang has catered for the Canon crowd because that is the Canon-look, their glass gives people jaundice and they praise the "special Canon colours" so...
Unfortunately I can't answer that question. Though, I would be curious to know whether anyone actually uses the manual aperture ring, or whether it's just something Sigma felt obliged to include in order to compete with the Sony 🤷♂️
This is all I needed. Other than weight/size, I wanted to see was there any real difference between the DG HSM vs DG DN aka image quality which the new sigma is definitely sharper. And the distortion, I've read about but doesn't seem to be noticeable in studio portraits and hardly noticeable outdoors from what I've seen elsewhere. Decision made .. thank you
Hey Tony - you're welcome! Glad you found it useful. I would tend to agree - the distortion issue is an easy fix in LR or PS if you're that bothered by it, but honestly, I just don't bother correcting for it as you rarely notice it!
Hey Tom, great comparison there. I noticed that you replied to one of the comment mentioning about Sony 85mm f1.8 lens. Are you able to add VIltrox II 85mm f1.8 for comparison if you are able to get a unit in hand? cheers.
Hey Nelson, thanks for your comment. The Sony/Sigma comparison video has already been shot and will be out next week (4th Sep), so I wouldn't be able to throw it in to the mix. However, I do intend on taking a look at the Viltrox 85mm in a separate video, so be sure to keep your eye out for that in the next few weeks. 😊
Haven't tried the Sigma, but sold my GM for the Tamron. GM is built like a tank, heavy, sharp and a pro tool. But Tamron is much lighter, cheaper and I didn't notice any loss in sharpness or focus speed on my A7R3. My back and wallet are very happy.
If it were me, unless you absolutely must have an f/1.4 lens and/or you'd benefit from the manual dials and buttons on the lens body, then I'd stick with the Zeiss. In terms of image quality, the Zeiss is a VERY good lens, so you wouldn't gain anything in terms of image quality.
@@TomCalton The Samyang does indeed a fully metal construction. The focus ring is also fully metal. I like this lens a lot as it has a robust feel, and a really nice minimalist look without any buttons (in addition the the great value for money factor)
I sold my Sony 85mm f1.4 GM lens and have ordered the Sigma Art 85mm f1.4 for my A7RIV, A9, and coming A7SIII. The Sony GM is just not as sharp, especially at f1.4 and is a five-year old design. Cheers and Thanks for your efforts.
I have the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM, so I do not need a 85mm focal length Lens, I went for the Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0 which have outstanding image quality.
No worries, thanks for your question. Honestly, the answer is that I always shoot RAW and DRO doesn't affect the RAW files anyway, so I just never bothered to adjust the setting from the default auto mode 😂
I have the Samyang 85 and to be honest Im about to sell it and buy the sigma. I find the autofocus fine in most cases but some of the images are soft on the eye and that yellow cast is just too much especially compared to my sigma art 50mm. I don’t really notice it on the Samyang 35mm but I’ll check that now lol that might be another one getting sold. I’m about to order the Samyang 24mm 1.8 as the reviews of that lens are fantastic and it doesn’t appear to have any yellow colour cast as far as I can see in the reviews.
So you had trouble with the aperture ring of the Sony ..!? I sold my Sigma 35 1.2 "perfection" just because of the aperture ring was sooooo easy to switch all the time had differen aperture now I wanted to sell my GM for the Sigma and didnt bought it because of the aperture ring ....way easier to turn by mistake than on the Zony 50 , 35 and the GM s !!!
Funnily enough I've just finished reviewing the Sigma 35mm f/1.2 and found the exact same thing. Check out the full review here if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/YCDaAjbWYsw/видео.html
I bought my Samyang 85mm 1.4 2 years ago and my unit is also occasionally hang and I have to restart camera to make it works again... But during this 2 years it happen maybe 6 times
Great review, I have the samyang and was super curious about this, it does give the yellow cast I've noticed but it that worth the new sigma with buttons/dials I never use.. 🤔
Thanks for checking out the review! Glad you enjoyed it. I think ultimately, the extra dials and buttons on the Sigma are just a bonus. What really makes the Sigma the best option, in my opinion, is the improved image quality. For you, I guess you just need to decide whether having sharper images without the yellow cast is worth the additional £500/$600ish.
I have the Samyang too but I think I'll sell it for the Sigma. Although the Samyang is a great lens IQ/AF wise, I'm not sure if the internals will last as long as the Sigma.
Hi tom this is a really amazing review. I need a 85 mm lens for wedding portraits mainly and I'm a bit tight on budget. Should i go for samyang or should i wait and increase my budget for sigma?
Hey Varun - thanks for your kind words. Glad you liked the video. If you're looking for top image quality, hold off and get the Sigma. However, if you're on a super tight budget then one option you might want to consider is the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 STM II. It's priced at just £320 ($399) and you'll be surprised at the results it can achieve! I recently tested this lens against the Sony 85mm f/1.8 - you can watch the video here if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/_QytFyP4cnM/видео.html
Very good question! The honest answer is that I didn't test for it. I would _assume_ that it is corrected in camera and then cooked in to the video file - just like it does for JPEG files. I will contact Sigma shortly and see if they have an answer as I've now sent the lens back so don't have access to it to try it out. Thanks for your question!
The Sony GM has better bokeh, softer and smoother background and rounder cat eye, those should be taken into consideration. Overall Sigma is a great lens.
Thanks for your feedback. This was the first group test video I did - things on the channel have moved on a bit since then and I now include tests for bokeh, flaring, focus breathing, and a bunch of other things. 😊 Thanks for watching and commenting!
Sigma isnt a problem because lens profile/correction has distortion built in, Samyang is a problem because color correction isnt a part of lens profile. One can also argue that high distortion correction may result in some IQ degradation
The orange cast on the Samyang is a tad annoying, but not a deal breaker for most I suspect. The unforgivable thing for me though is the unreliable AF. For most professionals who rely on their tools for a living, I can't recommend the Samyang as it's too much of a gamble. For hobbyists looking for a cheap alternative then maybe it can be forgiven.
I’m the only one that notice a yellow/orange tint also on the new sigma? I sell my Samyang because of that and order the sigma but I’m worried because I see it here
I've had the new Sigma for some time now and you've really not got anything to worry about. It's a fantastic lens. Every lens will give it's own tone/colour cast, but so long as it's not extreme it's not that much of an issue. The Samyang is the worst lens for this by a long way! Hope this helps.
The old Sigma 85mm is a real beast! I believe it's been discontinued now for mirrorless camera, which I can totally understand. The new 85mm is just great!
@@TomCalton image quality is top notch, I love it. The size and weight are a lot. I still have it but I snagged the Sony 1.8 if I’m out and about for the purpose of photos. The new sigma 85 is ideal great IQ without the GMaster price. I just wish I pumped the brakes when I went on a lens buying spree. Snagged the 35 and 50 and loved em soo much I HAD to have that 85mm. Now I’m going to end up with a 3rd 85mm lmao.
You could always try and sell both of your 85mm's to help pay for the new one? I had the Sony 85 f/1.8 - great lens, but I traded it in for the new Sigma. It's just so much sharper! 😊
I thought this comparison was going to be exactly what I wanted to see, but it turned out to be a comparison of a brick wall, when comparing 85 f1.4 lenses, the only thing people really care about is the subject separation, the blur and the bokeh balls and also contrast and sharpness, and focusing speed. why when doing a video like this would you not have side by side blur comparisons. and side by side bokeh ball comparisons. I just don't get it. and from what I hear the new Sigma is faster focusing then the GM. so sorry but this video was a disappointment.
Thanks for the feedback. I did show some portrait examples during the video, which you can pause the video and look at (6:39). As I explained in the video, the brick wall was only used in order to try and see the lens defects and sharpness of each lens more clearly (I also dislike this type of lens analysis as a rule, but sometimes it's necessary). Sharpness and focusing speed was covered in the video, so not sure what the complaint is there. Granted, bokeh balls wasn't covered and I'll hold my hands up and admit that was a slight oversight on my part, but we were working to a very very tight turnaround on this video as our time with the Sigma lens was pretty short and unfortunately making videos for RUclips isn't my full-time job. I appreciate the feedback though. This channel is fairly new so we're always looking for ways to improve the content. Hopefully our next review will be more to your liking.
@@TomCalton Don't like any music during talking because it's distracting and annoying. Seems to be the fashion. Music when no talking is ok. Just my opinion...

It seems basic, but this test can tell you a lot about a lens in an easily repeatable scenerio to ensure a fair test.
Please help me out,
I'm confused like which one to buy
Sony 1.4 or Sigma 1.4 ??
Sigma 85mm f/1.4 is widely considered as the best 85mm currently available

Unfortunately this is not something I have tested so I couldn't say for certain. 😅

You're very welcome! You won't regret buying the Sigma - it's a fantastic lens!
the review is awesome, but the outro is the best bit, bro. Just when you think, "that's cool, I'll go and get the new Sigma..." bam, right out of the blue, a spot of creative / presentation genius. LOL
😂 Glad you appreciated it! Thanks for watching!
I agree - it's a large step in the right direction for Sigma. I'm very excited for future releases now! Thanks for checking out the video 😁
I actually compared these two lenses here (ruclips.net/video/aSXwkwjSaCU/видео.html)
If you're only ever going to post your images on social media then save your money and get the Sony f/1.8. It's great lens and your followers definitely won't notice the difference when viewing them on social media. Hope this helps!
@@TomCalton what can you say about the colors of both lenses? I saw lot of comments that the sigma has rich colors and sony has flat colors.

Hey Pedro, thanks for the suggestion 👍
5:53 Props to your guy model for walking at the same pace all those times!
I wish I could have seen the brick wall, with the new Sigma, to see if video has the distortion auto fixed (if it's even possible for video), or if that's just a photo feature.
I am confused about New Sigma and Sony 85mm f/1.8...What can i do for my weeding propose..?
Funny you say that as next Friday (4th September) I'll be pitching the Sigma against the Sony 85mm f/1.8, so make sure you keep an eye out for it 👍
Hi...
Which lens best Bokeh for Sony a6400?
The Sigma 85 DN is still a bit pricey considered 56 DN is only 1/3 of the price and Samyang 85 is only 1/2. I guess we're just spoiled with all these E-mount third-party options.
The Sigma is definitely not a 'cheap' option, but considering that it's sharper, smaller, lighter, and £500 cheaper than the Sony, it's pretty good value for money - relatively speaking.
So,,Can we say this new sigma better than master bokeh 105mm F1.4??Regardless of weight& size and price?!!🤔cuz i just focus the better result... thanks
I haven't tested these lenses head to head yet, but that would be interesting 🤔
@@TomCalton I hope i see the comparison between of them soon on your channel
Any thoughts regarding the Sony 85 1.8 FE?
~250g lighter, ~1/2" shorter, ~half a stop darker at F1.8, & ~$600 cheaper
than the new Sigma 85 DG DN.

@@TomCalton oh heck ya! thanks man! guess ill have to subscribe then to make sure i see it ;)
"Samyang weird yellowish tint"; well I think Samyang has catered for the Canon crowd because that is the Canon-look, their glass gives people jaundice and they praise the "special Canon colours" so...
I want to know whether a large part of the cost of the Sigma dg dn is really spent on the video and the aperture ring?

Hi Tom, please review the Tamron 28-75 mm for Sony e mount
Hey, thanks for the suggestion. You might be pleasantly surprised soon enough... 😉
@@TomCalton Thank you. We need Tamron 28-75 vs Sigma 24-70 and Sony G master 24-70. That would be hell of a comparison
You deserved more subs. Keep it up man!
Thank you, I appreciate it! 🙌
should i sell by batis 85mm 1.8for the sigma 85mm 1.4?
If it were me, unless you absolutely must have an f/1.4 lens and/or you'd benefit from the manual dials and buttons on the lens body, then I'd stick with the Zeiss. In terms of image quality, the Zeiss is a VERY good lens, so you wouldn't gain anything in terms of image quality.
Are you sure the focus ring on the Samyang rubberized? The whole lens construction feels metallic to me.
It felt like a hard rubber to me - maybe someone else in the comments can confirm or deny this as I don't have the lens any more.
@@TomCalton The Samyang does indeed a fully metal construction. The focus ring is also fully metal. I like this lens a lot as it has a robust feel, and a really nice minimalist look without any buttons (in addition the the great value for money factor)
right Tom! like for you! I just decided to leave Samyang and to buy new Sigma! Thx from Italy

Α question that doesn't fit in this section but I see the b-roll... Why DRO on auto?

I have the Samyang 85 and to be honest Im about to sell it and buy the sigma. I find the autofocus fine in most cases but some of the images are soft on the eye and that yellow cast is just too much especially compared to my sigma art 50mm. I don’t really notice it on the Samyang 35mm but I’ll check that now lol that might be another one getting sold. I’m about to order the Samyang 24mm 1.8 as the reviews of that lens are fantastic and it doesn’t appear to have any yellow colour cast as far as I can see in the reviews.
very nice comparison and review!! Keep it up.

Dont bay Samyang 85mm only 75mm is good lens!
Distortion (sigma new) can be seen in video?
So you had trouble with the aperture ring of the Sony ..!? I sold my Sigma 35 1.2 "perfection" just because of the aperture ring was sooooo easy to switch all the time had differen aperture now I wanted to sell my GM for the Sigma and didnt bought it because of the aperture ring ....way easier to turn by mistake than on the Zony 50 , 35 and the GM s !!!

Great and very interesting video! However in my opinion it would have been interesting to have a look at the bokeh of the lenses too.
Thanks for your feedback - I'll take this in to consideration for future tests 👍
I recently tested this lens against the Sony 85mm f/1.8 - you can watch the video here if you're interested:
ruclips.net/video/_QytFyP4cnM/видео.html
Is pin cushion distortion present in video mode with the new Sigma? Or is it being corrected in-camera?
Very good question! The honest answer is that I didn't test for it. I would _assume_ that it is corrected in camera and then cooked in to the video file - just like it does for JPEG files. I will contact Sigma shortly and see if they have an answer as I've now sent the lens back so don't have access to it to try it out. Thanks for your question!
Update: Sigma have confirmed that the in-camera lens compensation settings do get applied to video files, as suspected 👍
Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@TomCalton Yes I really appreciate your work, keep going!
Thank you, means a lot! 👍🏻
Great content Tom!
Thank you - thanks for checking out the video 🙂
Sigma isnt a problem because lens profile/correction has distortion built in, Samyang is a problem because color correction isnt a part of lens profile. One can also argue that high distortion correction may result in some IQ degradation
The orange cast on the Samyang is a tad annoying, but not a deal breaker for most I suspect. The unforgivable thing for me though is the unreliable AF. For most professionals who rely on their tools for a living, I can't recommend the Samyang as it's too much of a gamble. For hobbyists looking for a cheap alternative then maybe it can be forgiven.

The Sigma 85 1.4 DG DN is insane !!! Even in 2024
It's a little unnerving having an $1800 lens (Sony 85 1.4) that makes scratching noises as it focuses...
It's only the sound of the focus goblins who live inside each lens trying to scratch their way out to consume your soul. What's so scary about that?
Tom Calton nothing much, except my 85 1.4 fell in water, it can’t be fixed, and I’m afraid they got out....
Let's just hope they're not like gremlins. I've heard it doesn't end well if they get wet... 😂
Greatly appreciated
Glad to help!
