    I enjoy these comparisons. However if you give a point for the entire catrgory (image quality for example) the outcome more often than not appears to be lenses are equal or nearly similar. May i suggest awarding points for each category (9/10 vs 10/10 in image quality for instance) that would make things much easier to differentiate lesnes.

      But How much is a 10?,

    • @TomCalton
      @TomCalton  2 года назад +9

      Thanks for your suggestion. I have already considered this idea (and many other scoring methods) but unfortunately it's not as easy as it sounds. I'd essentially just be picking a number out of my arse and saying 'this lens feels like a 9/10 to me". Based off what? The easiest method I've found is the simple "is it good or not?". If it is, it gets a point. If not, it doesn't. Ultimately though, my scores and my review in general is just something to help you come to your own conclusion. My word is not gospel and you should always pick a lens based on your own personal requirements and budget. So if my scoring doesn't sit right with you, that's fine, make your own scores using the results I've provided.

    • @MarcelVolker
      @MarcelVolker 2 года назад +4

      @@TomCalton Your system is also "future proof" because it's just based on head to head. One lens will always be better than the other.
      With a rating, over time the numbers become meaningless as last year's 4/5 is next year's 3/5.
      I like your way of scoring.

    I'm shocked at how much you downplayed the difference in chromatic abboration. That's a HUGE difference, and to test myself, I looked at the sample photos where you said it isnt a big difference in the real world, and could right away pickout the Samyang based on the CA in the background alone. Very easy to see the Sigma has superior detail and color fidelity.

    • @CanditoTrainingHQ
      @CanditoTrainingHQ 9 месяцев назад +1

      Also insane how at 8:25 you give both lenses equal image quality when those corners are the Samyang are straight up below average. Literally a 400 dollar Panasonic 85mm would blow through that quality. Wtf your videos are usually very unbiased and fair, this one seemed like you're showing us the color blue and telling us its red. Sigma destroys.

    As a hybrid shooter, i had to pick up Samyang, because, noiseless auto focus, and actually no distortion, Sigma imho has seriously big problem with distortion, however in still images is not a problem, profiles in LR doing job. both lenses has very fast auto focus, nice bokeh overall really good performance, but Samyang has one more advantage, is half of the sigma price.

    Was the crane really blue? Or is that CA at 9:17? That would be a nightmare in video. Thanks for pointing out that Pav had issues with his copies. So did a German reviewer. I have the first version of the Samyang 85mm 1.4 and I’m trying to decide if it’s worth upgrading to the Mark II. I read that sharpness is about the same between the two versions due to them having the same optical design. I do realize that the auto focusing is better in the newer version but for me that’s not too important. I’m not a pro like you. What’s your thoughts?

    • @stuffnuns
      @stuffnuns Год назад +2

      Oh, AF is so important when you need to get the shot NOW, before the kid/pet/insect moves away. In video, fast accurate focus and no hunting, please, and Silent motor. Even if it’s not a pro shoot, for street/candid shots, a good lens gets out of your way and just works.

  • @rhalfik
    @rhalfik Месяц назад

    Distortion is easy to correct, but the pixels you crop are your loss of resolution. So it's unfair to compare sharpness without distortion compensation on. Think about it - It's a matter of figuring out whether distortion is better corrected optically or electronically. If Sigma decided that it's better this way, they believe that their approach is better for the image.
