While I’m personally not fully sure bringing back Palpatine was the best decision, I can’t deny that Ian McDiarmid killed it in this movie. And I love how he was essentially a lich straight out of Lovecraft.
Looking at this scene by itself, without taking the history of the franchise into consideration, this was incredible. Ian is such a legendary actor. The CGI here is incredible. The musical score is second to none. Definitely 4.5 out of 5.
Special effects and sound design is world class for a fan fiction movie. I can only imagine how great it would be if Lucasfilm decided to make an Episode VII.
@mandalorethethicc I have a real argument. The Sequels started off strong but crumbled as it became abundantly clear that they didn't have a proper plan for the story. Disney's constant swapping of directors and creative team didn't help either. So, despite the top-class acting cast, gorgeous effects and a whole universe of established characters and lore to draw upon, the Sequel Trilogy failed.
I actually got chills when he mentioned he was every voice Ben ever heard.. imagine being manipulated for so long that your own path that you forged was never yours to begin with.
As much as I like Ian returning and Sidious himself, I think bringing him back ruins the whole point of Anakin's redemption except saving Luke. I think it should have been Plagueis to be the main villain, as he was most well known for doing this death cheating business and was even theorized to have indirectly created Anakin. If that's so then Kylo is also an indirect creation of his
oh it did. it completely ruined the theme george established of anakin being the chosen one who restored balance to the force. but this is disney we're talking about. they never had any plan when they started making the sequel trilogy so when they got to the 3rd film and snoke was already dead, they had no idea who was going to be the new baddy and resurrected ol' sparky. i like ian as palpatine however, when george wrote the return of the jedi, anakin killed him. george said so thus, it is so. i've never seen this movie or anything after rogue one from disney and while it's neat to see him reprise the role once more, it doesn't make sense.
He was brought back in legends as well. Palpatine always had contingencies in the event of his death. The man who fooled the entire Jedi for years and brought them down like a Trojan horse really wouldn’t have a backup plan to cheat death? He wasn’t dumb. He knew he hadn’t fully and completely turned Anakin. Not really. Him being beaten by Rey just shows the same level of arrogance he displayed towards Windu when he shot lightning and barbecued himself. Nothing has changed about his character.
@iamchrispaezjr thing is though, according to George, after vader threw him down the shaft, he was dead, dead, dead. That was how anakin lived up to the title of chosen one who would return balance to the force.
@@generalzod7959 Which he did, but that doesn’t mean that balance and peace lasts forever in an imperfect galaxy. Also, George Lucas doesn’t own Star Wars anymore, and sold it of his own free will. So he no longer has any say in what should or shouldn’t be. I agree with you that the story wasn’t well planned out, but at least J. J. Abrams’ logic made some sense still when explaining it to Ian McDiarmid, which is that Palpatine has already been the main devil throughout this saga, thus it should end that way. And Random Guy, whilst Darth Plagueis was better known for cheating death, not having him in the films at least supports what Palpatine says was ironic about him; “He could save others from death, but not himself.”
1:45 The shot of Kylo Ren’s Lightsaber near Palpatine’s face as the lightning goes off in the background is one of the most eerie moments in Star Wars that I’ve seen
I remember being in the theater when he said “unlimited power” and the whole building shook from bass. That was my favorite scene in starwars. I literally got chills watching it and felt scarred like I was actually there. I asked myself “how are they going to fight that?”
i think these movies deserve more credit idk why people hate. nothing is ever going to be more legendary then the first star wars impression that’s why people can’t love these ones
Thank you! I hate that i feel stupid or bad for liking Rise of Skywalker. I had issues with Last Jedi but ive come to warm up to it and accept that this is the sequel trilogy end of. And tbh i dont care for stuff outside the three Skywalker trilogies like The Clone Wars, Rogue one, Rebels etc i just care about the three trilogies and i dont want to feel bad about that. Its all about headcannon and thats it for me
I want a horror movie of Sidious doing evil stuff all over the universe, in this style. Would be a million times better than most horror movies. Ian steals ever scene he's in.
I can only imagine how it felt to watch this scene for the first time on the big screen : SO BOOMING, SO GIGANTIC, SO SUSPENSEFUL, SO BEAUTIFUL!! my god, I would have been grand.
Can we all appreciate the acting by Adam Driver!!! That guy was born to play Kylo Ren, and him finally getting screen time with Ian Mcdiarmid (who is the best actor in the entire saga in my opinion) made me geek out!
I absolutely agree, Adam Driver was flawless as Kylo Ren and Ian Mcdiarmid always knocks it out of the park as the most insidious, sinister, scheming Sith Lord in the entire saga Darth Sidious.
Honestly, having a plan B and a plan C is just pure palpatine. Had the entire trilogy been planned that way it would've been better but even the way it is, it is not as inconsistent as people thinks. The "aftermath" trilogy and the "darth vader" comics add some pretty interesting stuff
Exactly, at least I read someone who did some research. Aftermath released almost at the same time as The Force Awakens and they literally say "Palpatine is still alive somewhere... In the unknown regions, he has a plan, U must find him" said by one of his acolytes. So yes, it was ALWAYS the plan to bring back Palpatine, the thing is that it was so badly executed that people still think they improvised it. Even in The Last Jedi when Snoke is elevating Rey sounds Palpatines theme. It was there all the time.
For what it's worth, Palpatine's side of the dialogue here is fantastic. "I have been every voice you have ever heard inside your head" with the voices of Snoke and Vader was a nice touch
If they made Darth Plagueis as the main villain in this movie, it would've fixed many of the problems of this movie and Sequel Trilogy. Imagine seeing everyone's reactions when they thought this ancient Evil that was thought to believe to be a myth suddenly comes back and was the Emperor's old Master. And the twist of REY being related to Plagueis instead of Palpatine??? Would've been SO much better!!
The fact that Palpatine was the voice inside his head and said that the dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some considered to be unnatural, just proves that he is somewhat responsible for both Anakins' dreams about his mother and Padme.
I think those were actual visions he got through the force. Having visions of the future was a power he had but lost when he became Vader. I thought it was palpatine too, but he does talk to Anakin through the force right before Anakin goes to the chancellor's office before windu goes to arrest him.
NOPE STOP THIS RIGHT NOW. dont try to connect things from disneys garbage . everything that happened in the original 6 already has established reasons.
@@mvrtinxz650 I know some of the comics aren't cannon anymore due to this trilogy, and you're right, I actually don't like this trilogy, but it honestly gave a good explanation why Anakin was going through all that stuff.
@@ChSjRi naw. it was already explained. he was having visions because thats what jedi do. they have visions. just like mace windu and yoda in the prequels. even if i give you that as a good point, you cant excuse all the other non sense. it’s honestly unforgivable.
Throughout the last trilogy, I do get the impression the storyline was made up as they went along, rather than having a more coherent, longer term plan in mind from the outset and sticking to it. It is clear to me, having realized they made a mistake in killing off Snoke, that Palpatine was brought back more out of an act of desperation than anything else. This was to cover for the fact that it became obvious to even the substandard writers that Kylo Ren just didn't convince as the main villain and so they had to do _something_ . Kylo simply came across as an immature, spoilt brat. Nor was he scary in any way, quite irritating in fact. It would have been better to have killed him off in episode 8 and kept Snoke who I thought was quite an intriguing, eerie and intimidating opponent. They already had the makings of a great bad guy and proceeded to ruin it by focusing instead on someone who was already becoming quite boring. Bringing Darth Plageius in as an alternative would have probably been better than bringing Palpatine back. This way, at least you wouldn't have devalued the original trilogies at the same time, which is exactly what one of the unintended consequences was. After all, what was the point in Annakin/Darth Vader at all if he is only to achieve one mock heroic moment at the end of six films? All that just for the illusion of having killed Palps - really? Kylo's love/hate relationship with Rey was silly and overplayed, and I'm not so sure too many people really cared about it after a while anyway. Was it a sci-fi or a romantic movie that was supposed to be filmed here? Another gripe I personally had ( in episode 9 ) were all the fake deaths, that is false alarm deaths. It started with Chewbacca being killed in a spacecraft - only he wasn't in that spacecraft after all but in another one which suddenly loomed over the horizon! And so he was still alive, phew we can all breathe a sigh of relief. They did this type of thing twice more, once with Rey and once with Kylo ( pity ). Is it a sci-fi movie or a child's fairytale being shown here? Still, it's all about opinions and mine is that the last trilogy was just plain awful.
The fact you write such a long message doesnt make you right. In the Aftermath canon comics which came at the same time as The Force Awakens (end of 2015) a Sith Acolyte literally says "I know Palpatine is still alive somewhere in the unknown regions, he has a plan, we must find him". It was there all this time.
@@LeocaprioDinardo Of course it doesn't necessarily make me right. I clearly stated that it is all about opinions, that's all. The fact that my comment was so long was directly because there was, in my opinion, so much wrong with the trilogy to talk about. If there was less wrong with the trilogy my comment would have been shorter.
You have to give Kylo props, the way he walked up inside that Sith Temple completely alone ready to fight the Emperor in single combat plus any other potential Sith inside...he didn’t even bring his Knights which are all force users (they’re basically his Inquisitors) who could technically help him with this sort of thing. This is the most “Vader like” we’ve ever seen him, no fear, no hesitation. This is exactly how Vader would have approached a direct threat to his rule, if he were the “Emperor” or “Supreme Leader”, this is exactly how Palpatine approached Maul and Savage the second he got wind of what they were up to, he personally went to deal with them alone...mad respect to Kylo for acting like a true Emperor, he is Sith in every way but name.
Ravenclaw Blue, Yes they are...it’s literally confirmed in a recent comic that you cannot join the Knights of Ren without being a force user...and if you watch the fight scene between Kylo and all the Knights, right after Kylo force pushes one of them to the ground in the beginning, another one of the Knights literally uses the force to push Kylo back, it happens quickly...go watch the scene again, this happens before he gets the saber right in the beginning...all the Knights are dark side force users, it’s been confirmed.
James earl Jones only had to say one line as vader in this movie and it still gives me goosebumps "inside your head" in vaders voice. Chills every time.
And it meant fuck-all since he came back, destroyed the Republic and Jedi AGAIN, corruted another Skywalker into being his lapdog, then killed all the Skywalkers and created Two new Empires.
@@californiacombativesclub202 Did it have to be the same exact threat though? The problem of the sequel trilogy wasn't they were bad movies perse. The 'problem' was they weren't really astonishingly good in all departments, which had become the benchmark for the franchise since the original trilogy. A benchmark that even the prequels of grandmaster Lucas could barely meet according to the critics.
It's something i've never thought of previously. But Palpatine is Really fkn powerful. He lifted an entire armada of Star Destroyers from under the ground as effortlessly as he would lift a pen. Where other powerful force users like Darth Vader or Starkiller would struggle to even pull down ONE to the ground.
If you look into the whole expanded universe you can argue for Papa Palps being the most powerful character out of thousand of years into galactic history (gods aside)
I do like how Ren walks into the temple without fear, he was never intimidated by Palpatine like every other Jedi and Sith, it gives him character respect
That's exactly what I noticed the first time I saw this scene!!! Unlike Palpatine's past apprentices (Vader included), he's not deferential in any way whatsoever. Even Luke in Return of the Jedi, as defiant as he was towards the Emperor, you could still notice the fear and doubt.
His voice in theaters turned your blood to ice. Palpatine was terrifying in this movie. Literally evil incarnate hiding in the shadows and waiting for his hour.

Make them think or do things they wouldn't naturally do. If Palpatine wanted to, he could've told Kylo to jump off of a cliff to his death and kylo would have no choice but to do it.
Jacob R Sykes (2023) Yes there would be!! Have you read Colin Treverrow’s original script for Episode IX? It was amazing and better than what we got and it the emperor didn’t return in that version
Jacob R Sykes (2023) so did palpatine and, palpatine supposedly taught anakin this power, but I believe he didn’t want to because of all the wrong he did.
Jacob R Sykes (2023) I know, I’m just saying if palpatine BLEW UP, and came back, they could have done Vader. Since they disregarded everything about the OT and the PT.
0:25 Hearing this voice again, especially with the atmosphere, just gave me chills. I may not be for the sequels but Ian killed this, I’ll toss some credibility to Adam Driver’s performance as well, he pretty much carried the Sequels as we know it.
Ian as always, knocks people down with his performance. The script may have been terrible for most of the cast but damn, Palpatine for the most part was amazing. Him and Adam Driver.
Palpatine coming back made total sense given his telling of the Darth Plagueis legend to Anakin & his implying that he, Palpatine, was Plagueis' apprentice.

Indeed
The thing is...
It was't planned, nothing was. If they had any plan or at least idea this triolgy would be 3 times better

Too bad JJ isn't a prequel fan otherwise he would have used some sense and brought in Plagueis.
0:53 Palpatine’s a really good impressionist
Palpatine was Anakin's father.
I never thought we would see Palpitine ever come back and interact with Kylo Ren. It was very unexpected
When palpatine said “everything” that was THE most powerful thing from this film
The knights of Ren are not force users.
LOL watch the movie then HAHAAH
