For a child in '83,this was the most exciting character ever..a wizard of magic, surrounded by awesome technology, with menacing yellow eyes and brilliant acting skills.most epic practical effects film in history!
First watched these with my dad. Seeing Luke get helplessly fried with surprise lightning by and evil old wizard scared the holy shit outa 5 year old me
“Soon I’ll be dead, and you with me.” I love that line. Once you realize that Luke has been on a suicidal rampage for the whole movie makes it so meaningful. He went to the Death Star to try to save Vader but he thought that might not work so now he’s trying to run down the clock and trying to keep vader and palpatine one board while it explodes.

Luke in a jealous quasi-suicidal rage after Leia chose Han Solo over him. Esp after Luke saw them alone in the south passage, where she expressed her true feelings for him.
He’s like the Shakespearean version of the witches from Macbeth. He is this man who tempts on your worst traits and leads you down a path of destruction with false promises and coercion.
That is one of my favorite line reads, the condescension. Family Guy had a nice send up of it with Luke saying,” Ok but you don’t have to be such a sick about it.” 😂
What I also love about this scene is that if you notice almost every time Luke talks back at the Emperor, Darth makes a sudden turn toward him. Its like he's thinking he's crazy for talking to him and that he's worried about him. Like he's basically thinking "shut up shut up shut up shut up" because he's afraid Sidious would kill him. EDIT: Spelling.
Neil Smith Interesting fact. The serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was 'obsessed' with the emperor in Return of the Jedi. utterly consumed by the dark and sinister power he wielded over his poor victims. He even created a throne to resemble this
Ian McDiarmid's transformation from 30-something-years-old British gentleman to an old-ass omniscient and almighty warlock who happens to be the literal personification of evil is truly incredible and somewhat haunting. Not just the make-up, but the voice! I wish we had more backstage outtakes from 1983 to appreciate even more Ian's might as an actor.
Palps was stupid and weak not sensing Vader's betrayal, and by building one big weapon, instead of Thrawn's plan of building many smaller ships to fight the X-wings, why Thrawn is the best star wars villain, cause he's the smartest, what I value the most in other people, pure objective genius, free from any bad emotions.
@@ncard00He knows nothing about love and he doesn’t think Vader loves anything either besides the dark side like Sidious. He did after all, murder all of his old friends in the order, his old master(tried to), and his wife. Sidious is a true sith to the core and always has been. He slaughtered his family before he even learned the dark side from Plagueis.
Not to forget his transformation or past transformation to an evil dark lord disguised under the hood of democratic freedom living liberal politician weaving single handedly the mindfuck of greatest deception of a political web game that played both sides of the spectrum into creating a galactic empire for himself is astoundingly no less than a brilliant character development with class acting
@@ncard00well if Vader did out of anger or hate he would have definitely sensed it but Vader did it out of love for his son something Palpatine couldn’t understand
I always zero in on the fact that Palpatine does not refute Luke’s accusation that “Your overconfidence is your weakness.” He barely achieved his goals. They nearly failed at many points because of his flaw.
Yes, especially since in the end, Luke was right. His overconfidence in Vader staying by his side as he killed Anakin's only son ended up being his downfall.
He seemed pissed off when he replied and immediately deflected. Nobody had ever called him out on that up until this point. Luke's emotional intelligence was way higher than any of the original Jedi and is what ultimately caused Palpatine's downfall.
I don't really see any evidence to support that claim. How did he "barely" achieve his goals? At what points did they "nearly fail"? And especially as a direct result of Palpatine's overconfidence? I think you're overinterpreting the movie. Palpatine is probably just treating it as an insult and responding in kind. And as for Vader turning on him, if that's the single data point in favor then its not very convincing. He could have simply been wrong about Vader and that's it.
What I love about anakin Skywalker is his whole life he has been a slave first to watto then he thought he was free but in actuality he was a pawn to an ancient religion forbidden to be with the women he loves then the third time he offers his power to a man in the hope of saving his wife always a slave to someone else's plan/will Quick edit: I think he was even a slave before watto owned him to one of the Hutts
@@Theoneandonlyadammurphyryan Fr. Anakin’s entire story can be summed up as someone who was desperate trying to gain freedom by any means. He almost had it with his wife, but the Jedi and the sith ultimately destroyed any chance of that happening. Then luke came along and set his father free
I loved how the original trilogy portrayed people like Yoda and the Emperor, compared to how the prequels changed things. In these movies, you get a sense that these guys are so powerful that they don't have the need to even use basic Force powers or lightsabers anymore. They have wisdom and foresight, the Force is granting them a kind of clairvoyance that goes beyond what the normal person or even less powerful Force user can attain. The Emperor's power is in his god-like foresight and the control he has over the Empire, not only can he see things that are going to happen but he has the power to move the pieces around like he's simply playing chess. It makes him a lot scarier than a guy who can just flip around and swing a lightsaber. I love how this movie has Luke coming in with all this swag and you realize pretty quickly that the Emperor is a million steps ahead of him, so much so that Luke's "powers" don't even mean anything to him. The Emperor is scoffing and gloating over Luke's inferior understanding of everything. It's a phenomenal scene.
Add to that the fact that the way of the dark force is the feeling of hate that overwhelms Luke in that moment. So he only has two choices, 1) stand still seeing his friends fail 2) give in to his desire of killing the emperor, welcoming the dark force, the very thing the emperor desires. Thankfully the Ewoks saved the day....
I would still rather have the original version of this movie. Revenge of the jedi. Whereas the middle of the movie to the end was much darker an dramatic
“Soon I’ll be dead. And you with me.” One of the coldest lines in movie history! Everyone has jokingly felt that line on a spiritual level at some point in their lives
The way Vader looks toward Luke as he talks back to Sidious shows that he is genuinely concerned about his son. Vader knows how powerful his master is and could kill Luke with little effort.
And he couldn't risk trying to talk to Luke to be quiet because Sidious would recognize Vader showing concern for his son, seemingly turning to the light side again
They set up the Emperor as such a strong character. He reminded me of the grim reaper, like your looking at death and didn’t want to mess with him with his yellow eyes staring you back. It really made Vader look like a pawn and a pathetic figure compared to what we saw in the Empire Strikes Back. Vader used his strength as fear. The emperor just needed to look at you. He was so powerful that it made him arrogant to the fact that Vader would sacrifice his life for his son.
The yellow eyes and physical deformity is physical manifestations of deep dark side corruption and prolonged usage. Palpatine is very powerful indeed and a master manipulator. Palpatine was goading Luke and pushing Luke's buttons to get him to give in to his anger and strike him down. Luke was trying hard not to give into Palpatine's temptation and not to give Palpatine the satisfaction of corrupting him to the dark side and to control him like dad Vader/Anakin.
Joker: so I said, you're just a kid in a play suit crying for mommy and daddy, lmao. Green Goblin: lol, I gotta try that on Peter. Palpatine: I just say good let the hate flow through you. Strike me down in anger and your journey towards the dark side will be complete. Green Goblin: why? If he kills u your plans are ruined. Palpatine: him killing me is part of my plan. Joker: lmao and they say I'm crazy.
The emperor is such a fantastic character. He is only introduced in the third film of the trilogy but impacts the story so well regardless. Massive respect for Ian McDiamid for doing such a great job.
He was introduced in the first episode by being mentioned thru conversation between imperial officers. Then was shown via hologram in the empire strikes back and then finally shown physically in rotj The whole trilogy you hear about the emperor building up anticipation to see this character. In a new hope it seems like darth Vader is the real villain and ruler of the empire and slowly realize he’s kind of just a puppet
He was introduced in ESB but it was extremely brief and at the time you'd be forgiven for thinking he's a different character because in the original ESB he looked and sounded completely different. It was retconned in future versions to make him look like he did in the Prequels which is not accurate but it's at least a little bit closer to what he actually looked like.
Interestingly, the original idea for the Emperor was quite different from what we ended up with onscreen. Not being a Sith Lord for one thing, and treated as more of a puppet ruler. This was mentioned in the original novelisation for ANH.
“Your overconfidence is your weakness.” “Your faith in your friends is yours.” I love how somewhat childish Palpatine is here😂Like, “Oh, so there’s my weakness? Here’s yours. Gotcha!”
1:59 Can we all just appreciate this subtle laugh right here? Throughout the film, we mostly hear him let out his iconic cackle, but here, he relishes in how much Luke doesn't know, and it genuinely amuses him. Therefore, he just lets out this evil chuckle. It's just chilling.
@@hdallanstudios9568 The one for the TROS trailer has a tinge of sadism that accompanies the act of devastating an opponent. This one is merely an instance of his condescension owing to what he perceives as Luke's _defiant young fool_ vibes.
Ian McDiarmid deserved an Oscar for this. His slow, drawn-out, sneering line deliveries make Palpatine one of the most despicable and horrifying villains in film history. He feels like a genuine threat to Luke and the rebellion. If he hadn’t sold that as brilliantly as he did, the entire trilogy would’ve failed.
@@Stick_Chronic it would have come across as a laughable cartoonish "big bad" villain if it had been done Brian Blessed style. That slow, soft voice is far more threatening than a shouty end-boss. IMHO anyway
I love how Palpatine in this scene seems to know everything and have a response to everything that Luke says. Along with the emperor’s theme playing softly in the background it adds such an ominous tone
These aren't all of them, but all the scenes in the throne room with Luke, Vader, and The Emperor are the best in the entire saga BY FAR. They have the best dialogue and the stakes are so high. I love how evil and nonchalant The Emperor is. He doesn't consider Luke a threat. Vader, who was the "big bad" in the first two films, is now a mere sidekick in comparison to The Emperor in this film. I love the way Vader looks shocked whenever Luke talks back to The Emperor. I think he's legitimately scared for his son. The Emperor is my favorite character and Ian McDiarmid is a brilliant actor, especially considering he was a young man with a ton of makeup on to look old when this was filmed. I don't care what anybody says, but in my opinion The Emperor is the greatest villain of all-time.
Well, it's also the atmosphere they delivered in the room. I would imagine that sans music, that room would have been quieter than any other. You could probably hear a pin drop in that room. That's what made it the perfect conditions for Anakin to turn back to the light, because his mind was perfectly at peace in that moment, not a slave to the noise and raff of the republic and all that. The conditions when Anakin turned to the dark, think back to ep.3 in the chancellor's office, the window behind the soon to be emperor's desk was blown out, which meant that all the noises of Coruscant were let in to the office. You likely couldn't even hear yourself think. Anakin's thoughts were a slave to all the politics at play at that moment. Not on the death star. On the death star, it's up in space, and therefore, the conditions are naturally going to be a whole lot quieter.
@@ncard00 Thrawn is less of a villain and more of an anti-hero. He is not a flag-waving Empire loyalist; he serves the Empire because he believes it benefits the Chiss Ascendancy.
Lol that's because this movies been remastered a million times.....if you saw the original ..which arguably doesn't exist...you would see it's true decrepit form
Return of the Jedi has always been my favorite Star Wars movie since childhood and it is the true ending of the Star Wars saga 🙂. Ian McDiarmid did such an eerie and intense performance as The Emperor and he is true evil !
I've heard various actors say how much fun it is to play villains. They can just cut loose. Ham it up, chew on the scenery, very few things are out of bounds. Playing the hero is much harder. Depending of the kind of hero, actors have to have a much tighter rein on their voice, gestures, facial expressions, movements, so they don't slip over to "Dudley DoRight." Hamill does a wonderful job. For most of these scenes, Luke is quiet, calm, compassionate -- as a Jedi should be. Then he cuts loose when Vader threatens Leia, and then throttles back when Luke sees he's turning. Mark doesn't overplay a single note. To move back and forth like that, It's the writing, direction, editing, but still mostly Hamill.
It really is quite shocking that the first Star Wars had the best movie villain ever (Darth Vader) and then, a few movies later, topped itself. Obviously the prequels kind of ruined the Emperor but what didn't they ruin.
Palpatine’s overconfidence may well be his weakness, but my own personal interpretation has rather been that his ultimate weakness (and strength) is that he has mastered the Dark Side to such a level and been so utterly consumed by it at this point that he has become blinded to the presence of genuine virtues- such as bravery, loyalty, chivalry, truth, patience, integrity, self-sacrifice, and being a good friend and determined son- and Luke embodies these virtues, so Palpatine (as well as being arrogant) on a deeper level simply cannot tell that he is talking to the real deal here and the young Jedi who will trigger the course of the events that leads to his undoing is stood in front of him, and he has at last been outmanoeuvred and conquered. This side effect of Palaptine’s pure evil, acquired through years of practicing the Dark Side, turns to be his fatal weakness.
It's akin to Sauron's blindspot concerning the One Ring in LOTR. Sauron was so consumed by a lust for power and domination that he simply could not conceive that someone would destroy the One Ring rather than use its power against him
Remember, Emperor Palp said, "Your faith in your friends is (your weakness)". But when we first see the Emperor he calls Vader his 'friend'. So his faith in his 'friend' Vader was his own undoing.
I see that as the reason he didn’t expect Vader to turn on him. If he did it in anger Palpatine would sense it, but he did it to protect his son, light side feelings. Palpatine is so steeped in the dark side that he genuinely cannot sense the light side at all.
Same happened to Yoda in Ep 3 too much light too blinded to see what the darkness had become and flawed in thinking it was perfect do enjoy how for what is meant to be such a simple story of good vs evil morphs into too much of one side of thinking or beliefs is dangerous
I just realized something, when Palpatine says “I’m looking forward to completing your training” I think this goes a lot deeper. I think he’s talking about the training he was hoping to give Vader before he was injured and sees in Luke his father prior to his injuries and has another chance of having the powerful Sith he wanted Vader to be. You could kind of see when he says it, he starts to form a smile like he actually is looking forward to training Luke.
The emperor had regained his hopes of turning Luke as an unstoppable force user like he had with Anakin until he was badly injured by obi wan. That’s were he was severely disappointed in Vader and used him as a tool. When he knew how strong Luke was his hopes came back.
@@jonathanruiz9062 Isn’t that basically what I just said? I 100% agree with you, but i also think it’s more than just palpatine, it’s the dark side itself that regained hope. The dark lord of the sith in the rule of two era has generations of knowledge passed on from master to apprentice for the last 1000 years. The amount of dark side energy that gets passed along has only gotten stronger as the time as gone on and the dark side of the force itself is concentrated on palpatine and the dark side needs another vessel to gain all the knowledge and strength that palpatine has so that it could continue to grow. Vader will never be able to reach the potential that palpatine is currently at and has become inferior to be the dark sides focal point. Luke’s mitochlorine count being so high is a vessel that could not only reach Palpatines strength, but grow even stronger over time. By this point in time palpatine is almost 90 years old and the dark side while it can extend ones life span, it also is running out of time for another worthy individual to be trained and have all that energy to passed along.
@@satan899 Basically Palpatine didn’t want to do all the things he did in clone wars and empire era alone. He wanted someone to do all his dirty work for him to (being his slave basically) become the face of the sith. I think He followed the rule of two for a specific reason, not only wanted to make pain to his apprentices but also wanted to prevent any posible sith and Jedi wars like in the old republic cause he wanted to be the best of the best by being the absolute evil. He wanted to become the definition of the dark side. adds another meaning. That Palpatine didn’t care if Anakin was destined to be stronger than him and also capable of killing him but also wanted to train Anakin to become the biggest threat in the galaxy before Anakin was doomed at mustafar by Obi Wan. This could be another way to pass his lifespan to Anakin by being trained by Sidius.
@@jonathanruiz9062 he knew he would be stronger than him. He wanted the turned chosen one to be the ultimate victory for the sith. He didn’t truly dedicate himself to fully living forever until Vader’s defeat on mustafar. Vader being crippled changed how he viewed Vader as a whole. He was still to strong to just let die, but was now way to weak in order to be the sith he dreamed he’d be. He didn’t want Vader to overthrow him because he saw how unstable and emotional he is and who had no vision and wasn’t worthy of ever being a master. It’s almost as if he thought Vader was completely beneath him and wasn’t worth ever training or sharing the secrets of the sith let alone taking over an empire the sith have been working for 1000 years to create. Yea Sidious thought he’d achieve immortality by the time he expected Vader could overthrow him, but he did realize that one day Vader might kill him. Once Vader was defeated tho, he wasn’t going to ever give Vader a chance to overthrow him because he just out right wasn’t going to train him the way that he was planning on doing. Palpatine still wanted that fully powered ultimate sith that would be the total victory for the sith and Luke gives him another chance to have that prize. Him saying in front of Vader he looks forward to training him is a giant slap in the face to him because after his defeat, he never got trained formally and was told very little of the information Sidious would have willingly given to someone who was “worthy” to rule the empire which Vader who was not only to weak, but to emotional unstable and focused on his own defeats and condition would never be able to be handed over the mantle of dark lord.
The question I have is did Palpatine actually train his apprentices? I don't recall him teaching Dooku or Vader anything. They were former Jedi and he just used them as pawns for his own extremely selfish interests and ambitions. Maul was debatable, based on his background of being forced to survive, along with mostly tough love and abuse. Hence why I viewed Palpatine to be the laziest of Sith and focused more on politics and control.
Don't be deceived by Palpatine's pale and disfigured appearance as a result of decades of dark side corruption and prolonged usage. His ability to manipulate and seduce to the dark side, is what makes him so dangerous and scary. Palpatine manipulated Anakin with lying promises that Anakin can save Padme by becoming a Sith and Anakin made the fatal mistake to believe him. The fact he took off Luke's handcuffs with a flick of his finger shows how powerful he was with the dark side. Luke saw first hand just how powerful Palpatine was. Don't be deceived by his frail and deformed appearance. Using the dark side so much and for so long severely disfigured his appearance and turned his eyes yellow. They are physical manifestations of deeply immersed dark side corruption and prolonged usage. Palpatine never cared about him, he used Anakin/Vader as an errand boy to do his dirty work and then threw him away when Palpatine didn't find him useful anymore. Palpatine sensed Luke's anger growing as was taunting Luke to give into his anger and strike. Luke was trying hard not to give into Palpatine's goading, keep his anger under control and not allow Palpatine to manipulate and bait him. Basically, Palpatine was dangling a carrot in front of Luke to get him. Vader was well aware Palpatine wanted to throw him under the bus again and replace him with Luke as his apprentice
This is a replay of Empire Strikes Back, where Luke once again goes up against a far superior opponent without the training required to do so. Except this time, the battle is not of lightsabers but a battle of wills, ideologies, loyalties, understanding of the Force, etc. It is well done because it allows the audience to progress along with Luke, wading into the unknown together. Luke is kind of like the audience here in this scene.
@@andyroobrick-a-brack9355 if it hadnt of been for luke stalling vader and the emperor, if they had just killed him out right then or ended up turning him to the darkside then yes lukes faith in his friends would have been is weakness in that moment, palps was right from his point of view of what was about to happen, Lukes faith in his friends was his weakness
Please note: when the doors first open, Luke checks out the room. His eyes dart left, right, center then finds and focuses on the Emperor. A Jedi, a warrior, knows his territory. And I bet Mark did that for each and every take. Such a small thing, but one I admire about him as an actor.
I beg to differ... Vader had a sadistic sense of Humor, usually displayed when ever he kills one of his underlings for failing him..... apology accepted Captain Needer.
My favorite part of this is how the Emperor handled Luke's lightsaber (pre-prequel canon of course). The way he held it was like how one might hold a delicate antique rather than a weapon, and the way he spoke of it was almost as though he'd forgotten that lightsabers existed at all.
Even in the prequel canon, Palpatine always preferred to not use a lightsaber. He always saw them as a Jedi's weapon and used them in battle to mock what he saw as Jedi ways. Like "I think your use of weapons is silly, but I can still do it better than you."
1:05 the first close up, intense look into the emperor’s eyes… at the same moment his chilling musical theme returns… An absolutely incredible moment where the story, the visuals, the music and the acting weave together perfectly. Masterful film making.
@@darrenmoore7622 He knew it would come to something like that. Yoda warned him. That’s why he threw his weapon away and decided not to even fight. He was counting on Vader’s conscience. And he was correct. Luke was wiser than the Emperor.

For me, this is my childhood. It’s pure nostalgia and I often come back sometimes just for a good trip down memory lane. But nothing compares to seeing this for the first time. I’m sure all here remember seeing this for this first time and know exactly what I mean
1:04 I wish I had that amount of confidence and conviction in my life You see the concerned look on Luke’s face for the first time when the emperor removes his cuffs with the simple move of one finger. Like he’s beginning to think that the emperor is a lot more powerful than he realized For some reason the emperor’s delivery of “yes, I assure you, were quite safe from your friends here” always gets me 🤣🤣 What’s awesome about Rotj is that all three of these characters have a personal agenda. Vader wants to rule the empire with Luke, Luke wants to turn Vader back to the light, and we find out after the duel that palpatine wants Luke to replace Vader and have him become the sith that Vader would have became if he didn’t get injured (we don’t know palpatines true intentions till he reveals it) and you see all 3 of them scheming while trying to hide their intentions from at least 1 of the 3. Rotj can be summed up as a 3 player chess match
It almost worked for the emperor until Luke looks at his hand and realizes he's about to follow in his father's footsteps in joining the Dark Side by killing his father and decides not to do it. Then Luke tosses his lightsaber away as to invite the emperor to kill him because he would not join the emperor's side.
@@zerimar26the emperor if he never opened his mouth would have successfully turned Luke. Luke was channeling the dark side but Palpatine breaking Luke’s concentration twice snapped him out of it. Palpatines foresight of Luke turning was spot on. But Palpatines visions he had didn’t take into account him opening his mouth
A lowkey thing I like here - when Luke says "your overconfidence is your weakness", Palpatine doesn't deny it or refute it in any way, he just snaps back, with a bit more bite to it than his other lines. On the one hand it implies Luke managed to ever-so-briefly get under his skin, that he so quickly figured Palpatine out, and it annoys him. On the other hand, it kinda makes Palpatine even more intimidating by insinuating that he's aware of his own weakness and doesn't care, because he thinks he's so in-control and powerful that he's still untouchable.
I love the contrast of this Emperor telling Luke to his face that he's going to straight up make him his bitch, whereas in the Prequels he had to take a very careful, subtle approach with Anakin. Overconfident is an understatement.
I saw this movie 40 years ago in May 1983 when I was ten years old. I saw it in Louisville, KY and the line wrapped all the way around the buildings and into the theater lobby. It was packed, and it was awesome. This scene was seriously epic, and so was the speeder bike chase. I still love ROTJ!
Ugh this scene is so good! Every performance is top-tier but McDiarmid's is so special. I love the flamboyance with which he acts and delivers his lines, and he perfectly conveys the arrogance that comes from ruling without question for so long. The way he switches from confidently refuting Luke's claims about his own arrogance, to overconfidently showing his clairvoyance, to mockingly feeling sorry for the Rebellion is masterful and shows that the Emperor values emotion only as a tool to manipulate others. Episode 9 obviously could never touch this but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy his return - but perhaps that's more because of McDiarmid himself than the Emperor.
His return just cheapened this. If they were going to bring him back they should've done something different than ANOTHER throne room showdown. The ST spent more time trying to one-up the originals than tell a new story.
@@ergob3907 That's why the Sequels are largely considered separate from this, even George Lucas himself hates the Sequels, if you destroy the material so much to the point that the creator of said material hates it than maybe it shouldn't have existed to begin with (The Sequel Trilogy that is). So the Sequels are not really considered to be canon anymore which is nice but I wish we could have gone back and had a redo of the Sequel Trilogy, but there's no turning back time.

I was born in the early 90’s and my father introduced these movies to me in the late 90’s right before the first Prequel came out. I was 6 when I first watched this movie and remember that I never felt scared watching Star Wars until I saw this scene. The Emperor terrified me just like you can see how Vader is terrified of him here with his line “It is pointless to resist, Son.” I think that’s one thing the prequels missed, is this God-like horror that Sidious had like an aura surrounding him. You felt like he was reading your mind and knew what you were going to do before you even did. The perfect representation of evil in my opinion.
Padme should be proud of her son. Luke's resistance to the Emperor with his incredible calm. Obviously, the young Jedi holds his late mother in his attitude.🙂
I just realized. The reason Vader says 'it is pointless to resist my son' is because in that moment anger is building in Luke after the emperor was taunting him with his friends death. Luke must be telling himself to remain calm, Darth Vader sees this so he just tells Luke what he is doing is pointless. I kinda always thought Luke didn't start getting angry till the strike me down moment, but the emperor was pissing him off from the very start.
Pay attention to how Vader says " HIS Lightsaber ". He did it in such a low vibrational demonic way that you can tell he didn't appreciate the emperor approaching his son, let alone the manner in which he spoke to him. 10/10

Palpatine was tempting Luke to strike him down in anger, thus corrupting him to the dark side, replacing Vader as his new apprentice. Luke was trying to keep his anger under control and not let Palpatine manipulate and bait him into giving into his anger. Luke knows if he gives into his anger and attacks, he would give Palpatine the satisfaction of corrupting him to the dark side.
Luke was such a fast learner of the force. It was like night and day for him. It’s almost as the force itself was in a panic and needed someone wise with the power of the force asap.

I'm a lifelong Star Wars fan so it's almost impossible for me to really imagine this scene from the perspective of someone watching for the first time. But I honestly love the setup of the Emperor. This dreaded figure, the Emperor against whose forces the heroes have struggled for the entire time and when we finally do see him, he's an old man in a black cloak, something altogether different from the menacing, towering figure of Darth Vader. He exudes an aura of quiet but absolute power, and when he casually uncuffs Luke's manacles using the Force, this is when you know him to be a threat of great magnitude.
Something I never really picked up on as a kid with this movie is how conflicted Vader actually is. Sure, Luke says "I can feel the conflict within you!", but you actually can notice it based on Vader's body language. It's amazing how expressive he can be even though you can't see his face. With all of the additional lore that's come out since then, these scenes still really hold up.

It's funny because Palpatine said the exact same thing to Yoda essentially. "Your arrogance blinds you, Master Yoda"

Obi Wan literally said a lightsaber is a Jedi’s weapon it would make sense for Yoda to have one.
Sidious always carried a lightsaber in the prequels.
They needed lightsabers since they are fighting a war.

It really made Vader look like a pawn and a pathetic figure compared to what we saw in the Empire Strikes Back. Vader used his strength as fear. The emperor just needed to look at you. He was so powerful that it made him arrogant to the fact that Vader would sacrifice his life for his son.
I've adored Palpatine since 1983. I even would walkout of the movie when Darth Vader betrays him LOL
Indeed.vader was a great character. But McDiarmid just took that Machiavellian spitefulness to another level.
Imagine Palpatine, Green Goblin, and Joker sat down together at a table.

The emperor is such a fantastic character. He is only introduced in the third film of the trilogy but impacts the story so well regardless.
Massive respect for Ian McDiamid for doing such a great job.
He's introduced in the second film when he tells Vader the son of Anakin is alive.
He was introduced in the first episode by being mentioned thru conversation between imperial officers. Then was shown via hologram in the empire strikes back and then finally shown physically in rotj
The whole trilogy you hear about the emperor building up anticipation to see this character. In a new hope it seems like darth Vader is the real villain and ruler of the empire and slowly realize he’s kind of just a puppet
How the General Grievous
He was introduced in ESB but it was extremely brief and at the time you'd be forgiven for thinking he's a different character because in the original ESB he looked and sounded completely different.
It was retconned in future versions to make him look like he did in the Prequels which is not accurate but it's at least a little bit closer to what he actually looked like.
Interestingly, the original idea for the Emperor was quite different from what we ended up with onscreen. Not being a Sith Lord for one thing, and treated as more of a puppet ruler. This was mentioned in the original novelisation for ANH.

Return of the Jedi is my favourite too!
No Star Wars movie was anticipated more than Return Of The Jedi.

@@chazo1367 definitely agree with this
Same happened to Yoda in Ep 3 too much light too blinded to see what the darkness had become and flawed in thinking it was perfect do enjoy how for what is meant to be such a simple story of good vs evil morphs into too much of one side of thinking or beliefs is dangerous
@@jonathanruiz9062
Isn’t that basically what I just said?
Palpatine anticipated everything except for the love between a father and a son and the determination of both to save the other.
The only comment on this video lol
This is a replay of Empire Strikes Back, where Luke once again goes up against a far superior opponent without the training required to do so. Except this time, the battle is not of lightsabers but a battle of wills, ideologies, loyalties, understanding of the Force, etc. It is well done because it allows the audience to progress along with Luke, wading into the unknown together.
It's only a weakness if you don't have the power to back it up.

Geez, you don’t have to be a dick about it. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
0:38 The fact that Ian in this scene is using his feet to turn the throne around is just goofy as hell 🤣
One of the best acting jobs in all cinema. Best villian of all time in my opinion.
Pay attention to how Vader says " HIS Lightsaber ". He did it in such a low vibrational demonic way that you can tell he didn't appreciate the emperor approaching his son, let alone the manner in which he spoke to him. 10/10
Damn, interesting analysis. There's something there to your point. Imma go back and listen again
Eh, I think you're projecting
i took it as he was trying to divert the attention away from luke who was getting mouthy with Palpatine
I love The Emperor. He is such an interesting character!
Spihk Heartbust!? Spihk Heartbust mates internet friends for people in store when a wallet was purchased inorder for Bozeman Hotmail Recipient to retrieve Cash near Jeep
I love how Vader keeps looking over at Luke like “son, please you’re embarrassing me.”
The Emperor and Darth Vader. Imagine how terrifying it would be to be in that position for anyone who is not Vader's son.
Here after hearing about the death of the voice actor of Vader, James Earl Jones. RIP James!
This movie was so ahead of its time. I can watch it nowadays and it still doesn't even seem that dated. Genius.
George Lucas has a habit of adding in CGI in the OT since 1997.
Ian could make the phone book sound the tragedy of darth plaguieus
The way Vader keeps looking at Luke like he’s a lunatic for talking to the Emperor the way he is.
There’s just something chilling about a creepy old villain with an Edinburgh accent
01:14 Vader looks at Luke like “bruh, don’t piss him off” 😂
Little did they know that all they had to do to kill the Emperor was turn Luke's lightsaber with the Force.
Little did kylo ren know he just had to pick snoke up and throw him out of the window. It's a weak argument.
@@lewin5181 What do you mean?
@@grimlord3181 the emperor always wanted luke to kill him, that would make luke the new Sith Master along with Vader. But luke didn't want to give in to the hatred. That's the point. It's not easy.
@@jazsm5385 But he attacked the Emperor anyway. And even if Luke couldn't do it, Vader could've.
I like how Luke scans the room as soon as the door opens like he's in Rounders.
Luke was such a fast learner of the force. It was like night and day for him. It’s almost as the force itself was in a panic and needed someone wise with the power of the force asap.
Stars Wars officially concluded at this movie. I wish George would have just left it alone.
2:11 that scowl he makes as he talks down on the rebel fleet is just gold
No dislikes. Outstanding.
From the living, no.
From the dead, palpatine.
And now, we’ll never know
@@ALJ9000 this simply means that the Imperial Security Bureau is doing their job
"Did-...did I ever tell you the tragedy of..." *long drawn out sighing by Darth Vader*
Darth Plagueis.
ive watched this movie so many times i have this whole scene memorized and im proud of that lol
I'm afraid the Deflector shield will be quite operational when your friends arrive
😏
Luke is so incredbly strong. He got tempted by 2 of the most charismatic evils ever. Look at Vader. He listened to his son.
40 years later and I still get the chills from this epic scene!………the greatest in the whole Star Wars Universe……….the whole dam thing including comics….clone wars…..spin offs …..etc……
“An entire legion of my best troops awaits them”
*Gets defeated by ewoks*
2:40 I never noticed how Vader reacts almost the same way Luke did. *He didn't know this was the Emperor's plan.* He's genuinely shocked.
I like how Palpatine sounds like he is making fun of Luke 🤣😂
Oh I'm afraid the deflector shield will be quite operational when your friends arrive
🤣 that voice
He is, he's basically saying to Luke "that's right, your friends are all going to die and there is nothing you can do about it. Suck it bitch." 😂
This scene plus the battle at the sarlaac pit were just awesome to watch on the big screen when i was 14. Incredible suspense, perfect characters.
I love the little glances Vader does to Luke at this scene like “Did you really say that to him?” “You did not just say that, just now”.
Vader: So proud 😊😊
Something I never really picked up on as a kid with this movie is how conflicted Vader actually is. Sure, Luke says "I can feel the conflict within you!", but you actually can notice it based on Vader's body language. It's amazing how expressive he can be even though you can't see his face. With all of the additional lore that's come out since then, these scenes still really hold up.
The Emperor failed to factor in Ewoks.
