For the first time in many years Anakin Skywalker, NOT Darth Vader, was speaking.
Not even Padmé on Mustafar was able to get through him nor Ahsoka on Malachor. It's really sad it took this long but that adds on this amazing tragedy.

"Then my father is truly dead"
Even with the mask on, you can tell by body language alone how much those words shook Vader. That was the turning point for Anakin.
Anakin gets instant flashback on Kenobi. I love of how small detail of body language shift to unease Vader.
As mentioned by the other comments, this line was used again by Obi-Wan in his series. Not only that, but when Luke says "there's still good in you" Padme says the same thing moments before Anakin wears the Vader suit for the first time
Yeah, Vader had not thought this through. Vader claims to be Luke's father and wants to rule the galaxy as father and son, but Vader rejects Anakin who was Luke's father. Hearing that Luke's "father" is truly dead made him rethink this situation lol.

I’ve always loved this scene because Luke & Vader don’t talk like enemies. They talk like family.
it's really about family
What gets to me that he captured and tortured Princess Leia in first Death Star weapon. Yet, never senses she WAS his daughter. Only after getting feeling from Luke's mind did Vader realize she was his daughter.

"Probably the worst injury Vader had ever taken."
That and Luke choosing a s**cide drop off the bridge on Bespin over joining him and living as a galactic Jedi prince.
And Luke didn't really believe it, obviously, since he kept trying to get through to him later. He just said it to get a reaction from Vader, and whether he could sense it or not, he certainly got one.
" Then my friend is truly gone"
Obi- wan
" Then my father is truly dead"
Luke
You can tell Luke saying that bought Vader back to the only other person who ever cared about him
Yes, but to me, it was proof that Obi Wan didn't lie to Luke about Vader betraying and murdering Anakin
@@joey2894 Luke said that purposely so that Darth Vader would have to consider what he was doing and if it aligned with his true self, which he had been running away from all those years. Luke was the only one who could get him to do that. He didn't turn immediately, but it planted a seed deep within him that came out when the Emperor was torturing him.
The way Vader kept his posture until the door closed, out of Luke's sight, is absolutely crippling. Though you can't see it, him slumping and gripping the railing for support are all but tell tale signs of a man shedding a painful tear. By far one the best scenes in Star Wars cinema. Body language is so much more stronger than words.
I agree 100%. I have watched this scene many, many times. It is probably my favorite scene in the entire trilogy. The way you can feel Vader's pain is crazy.
Vader was starting to fall apart …
@@xgame47and Anakin was beginning to rise again
Lol
so true. and thats whats mostly missing in todays movies (besides many other things)
When Vader says "It's too late for me son", he says it in a very tenderly manner, almost like a loving father.
Deep down every father loves their son. Sometimes a father loses their way. Sometimes it's too late before they find it again.
To quote from a certain Professor with Mutant powers, "Just because someone stumbles and loses their way, doesn't mean they're lost forever."
Heja wolf 0602 Yoda would disagree, the whole dark path forever dominating the destiny bit. But as we saw, 800 years of being a jedi and being as one with the Force as a living being can get, doesn't make one always right.
Like he admits he was wrong to turn to the dark side.
Qasim Mir Yep!
I love how Vader was like “I see you’ve constructed a new lightsaber” when on the inside he was thinking “THAT’S MY BOY”
He's still a tinkerer at heart, so I guess he can't help but admire his son's craftsmanship, even if it looks an awful lot like his former master's.
@@keithadams7619 if vader/anakin had to make a new weapon to counter the Death Star and a new better suit and had the aid of the following people, could they do it:
Thrawn: Designer of the TIE Defender, used some of Vader's own designs for both on-screen versions of the TIE Advanced
Miles O'Brien
Montgomery Scott
The latter two's engineering pedigrees and skills need little explanation or introduction and in my book are such they transcend franchises, much like a certain pointy-eared scientist we all know whose anecdotes, logic and philosophy also transcends franchises.
Could they do it without arousing Palpatine's notice?
Individually they're all good. Combined they'd likely be unstoppable.

@@knightwind6628 You know dad, Your lightsaber's good, but it just doesn't look like it *ranks* among *master-level* craftsmanship.
Anakin: listen here sonny boy don't make me get the belt
Lol, best comment I’ve seen 😂
You can tell Vader is really proud of Luke. This was really the moment Vader could not escape his love for his son. Such a cool story man
Yes. Deep.
I love the misdirect when Vader ignites the lightsaber. You think he’s going to attack Luke out of rage and offense at what Luke just said. But it turns out to be a completely harmless gesture, as he just inspects it, then turns it off again almost immediately, and engages in a very human and intimate conversation with Luke. A small moment that subtly indicates so much. He doesn’t want to hurt Luke and he is no longer as much of a threat to Luke as he used to be.
Why would he attack Luke? The Emperor wants him turned to the dark side.
@@jdb2002 Luke looks briefly nervous when he hears the saber ignite. Even if logically he knows Vader won’t harm him for one reason or another it’s the equivalent of hearing someone cocking a loaded gun behind your back. Luke knows trying to redeem Vader is a huge gamble.
I jumped out of my skin in the theater when that happened.
@@taramaforhaikido7272 if you didn’t feel that particular way that’s cool. I’m sure there are people who didn’t. I know for a lot of a fact a lot of people were startled for a second just like Luke was when he heard the saber ignite.
Also Luke’s goal was NOT to meet the Emperor. It was to talk to Vader and convince him to redeem himself.
Luke says this himself 1:32 to 1:45
“I know there is good in you… the Emperor hasn’t driven it from you fully. It’s why you couldn’t destroy me. That’s why you WON’T take me to the Emperor now.”
Vader responds by igniting the saber. Almost like saying “you’re wrong Luke.” And you can see Luke’s confidence in his previous statement falter. For just a second.
2:16
Luke tries to reach Vader again.
“Come with me!”
And Vader takes him to the Emperor. Luke was wrong there but he still had faith in his father even if there were times of doubt.
I think it was a reminder to Luke of just what he was trying to do. Luke almost sounds cocky when he says that Vader won't take him to the Emperor. Igniting the lightsaber was a reminder to him that he held none of the power in the situation and trying to get to Vader emotionally is a move you have to make very, VERY carefully.
Luke has Padme's faith. She begged him to come back too.
Padme may also have been briefly force sensitive because she was pregnant with Luke and Leia too. As the force would be very powerful. So would want to think in some way she still felt there was good in him and was begging him to come back. Only it's belief. It just makes sense to me.
Obi-Wan watching this scene: "Okay, maybe this time I DON'T show up and antagonise him."
I mean that is his mom so...
mother like son
I like how when Luke says "come with me" Vader sort of pauses like he now finally as an option to be free but feels he's at the point of no return so he brings up "Obi Wan once thought as you do" which Vader just thought of the person he hates the most to bring him back into his hate.
Vader is a really tragic character when you think about it.
Cyberlord how

Cyberlord Are you fucking dumb or something?
I know cyber lord you idiot because i did not edit anything
Vader seemed genuinely hurt by the idea that Luke was more disappointed in him than angry. Hate and anger are emotions Vader knows all too well. They're the Sith's source of power, after all. But disappointment is something else. Luke truly expected better of his father and Vader could not meet those expectations. When Luke says, "Then my father is truly dead", it's out of heartbreak, not outrage. If anyone knows what it means to hurt those you love, it's Anakin. He often hurt those he loved on the path to save them. It isn't until the very end that Vader finally saved someone he truly loved and became the person Luke knew he was.
He has a lot of respect for his son. He knows he's a good person. And a better man than he is
@@stevencoardvenice Amazing comment. And sad, too. Thanks for that.
Do you really realize how amazing it is that Vader's body language is clear as water even though he's entirely armored ? You can clearly feel his emotions under his black suit. I love how calm and confident Luke is at this moment, after being such a rebellous mind on the previous episode. Those two lines :
"It is too late for me, son"
and...
"Then my father is truly dead"
... are a true mark of an incredible writing and scenebuilding.
That's why these movies are some of the best ever made.
Sure they ruined it with ewoks but episode 6 had its moments...
Give some credit to David Prowse (R.I.P) as well.
@@HAL-bo5lr Totally agree. Lucas wasn't kind enough to him despite Prowse giving away some secrets he probably shouldn't have. Without the right body language under the suit, the character wouldn't work at all. All his movements go perfectly with the voice.
"Then my father is truly dead." Those words pierced him like a lightsaber.
Even more when Sidious told him he killed Padme
In believe Vader start to breaking after that words
Those words were a fatal wound to Vader, but a shot of life into Anakin.
"then my father is truly dead."
Anakin: "NOT. YET."
Palpatine: "it's _Treason,_ then...."
@@hobomike6935 Han Solo said "No, that feels different." What? Too soon?
"It is too late for me, son". That line is so powerful because you can hear the guilt and fear and self disappointment in his words and it's almost as if his entire Jedi life and life before his transformation flooded back into memory for a brief second.
he's probably thinking "why the hell did I go from being a faithful Jedi, to a mass murdering child killer in the space of ten minutes? Seriously did not think this through."
STARKILLER15100 that's exactly what I was thinking!!! it was almost like aniken was talking for a second, then Vader put him back in his cage.
Vader never truly converted. He turned to the dark side for noble reasons, and did terrible things that weighed on his conscience.
Sloth from The Goonies yes he did, it wasn't until Luke came along where he started to come back. Anakin died but was resurrected in episode 6
Suave Man If all that's all it took for him to snap out of it, then I stand by my statement.
I love that fact that it’s pretty clear that the reason Luke has such sway with Vader and is able to shake him to his core so much is because when Vader sees Luke he doesn’t just see his son. Vader sees what he should have been. Luke is what Anakin would have been if he had been trained by Qui-Gon. A Jedi who relies on compassion to fuel his power. A Jedi not blinded by dogma. The Chosen One he was always destined to be.
he would also probably be reminded of padme every time he sees luke, see her personality traits etc etc
He was always the chosen one, no matter what. When Qui-Gon Jinn said he would bring Balance. He would. And he did. The moment he picked up Palpatine and threw him into the core. That is when balance was brought. Either way turning into Darth Vader or not he was always going to bring balance no matter what.
Chosen one doesnt mean Jedi
@@JasonLdee102bruh Palpatine returned so obvs he wasn’t the chosen one
Baby Yoda or Rey Skywalker is the real chosen one
"It is too late for me son" Is such an important line. Despite what Vader meant, it actually confirms Luke's theory that Vader still had good in him. By saying that it is 'too late', Vader is aware that he has made wrong choices. And only a person who is inherently good can understand if what theyre doing is wrong.
For him his actions burned any bridge connected to his former life. All he has is the emperor who would kill him if he stepped out of line. He is a man who is trapped.
Is he saying like he wants to be good and be on the lightside again? But after everything hes done, hes saying he really cant. And i feel like after Vader said that his anakin skywalker memories flooded back in his mind for a hot second.
The rule of two demands there can only be two sith lords at the same time. In Empire, he invites Luke to rule the galaxy as father and son, which would mean he intends to usurp the emperor. The emperor on the other hand, intends to make Luke his new apprentice, Vader has accepted his due “retirement” with silent resignation. Perhaps this is what he means with “two late”
Padme once thought as Luke did.
@@Gamerafighter76 I've thought the same thing. If Luke was right, and Vader said he was, then that means Padme was right. There was still good in Vader/Anakin.
What I find fascinating is that in Vader's mask we can sense some kind of facial expressions.
I know, right?!
yes I agree very nice indeed
Sadly people don't appreciate the body language as much as the voice
Youre absolutely right. Just look how he leans over at the last clip . 100% conflicted

Vader be like: If you weren’t my son…
2:18 That brief pause speaks volumes. You can tell Vader wishes it was just that simple - that he could just leave with his son and be done with everything.
Also, watch Vader’s body language at 3:19. He’s basically thinking to himself, “even after I fucked up and all the terrible things I’ve done, there’s still someone who loves me and has hope for me?” And this also demonstrates how he wishes it could’ve been simple like you said

@@regayudafitra6236 I think the joke is Vader gets pissy if people call him Anakin lol
Thrawn deduced Vader as Anakin in the book "Thrawn: Alliances". Vader was pissed off but didn't kill him.
@@Warsie The reason why Vader gets so pissed off when people call him Anakin is because he utterly hates his past self. He regards his former self as weak, foolish, and let himself be betrayed, used, and abandoned by everyone he called 'friend'. The only person from his past he doesn't hate is his wife, and we see multiple times in canon where he tries desperately to get her back.
Let's appreciate how Obi Wan trained 2 skywalkers successfully.. truly underrated for a master.

@@haywoodjno actually both of the 2 were trained successfully in the fact and sense that they both became Jedi knights.
@@adamtajyar and one of those Jedi Knights ended up with a ruined life.
@@haywoodj - You can't put that all on Obi-Wan though. He could only train Anakin, it is not his fault or responsibility to save Anakin from himself. The council as a whole and Palpatine are more at fault for Anakin's ruined life than any mistakes Obi-Wan made during Anakin's training.
"Then my father truly is dead"
That was very painful for Vader to hear. Luke is the last family he has. the last thing Padme gave him. and Luke declares him not his father right in Vader's face. what was left inside of Vader had just been broken by his own son rejecting him.
Definitely although I gotta add that the obi wan show gave us this line as well with obi wan saying "then my friend is truly dead" and somehow it makes this one feel even more heavy

Vader lingering and seeming distant after the elevator closed was always one of my favorite scenes as a kid. Always seemed like the most human moment he had to me.
David Prowse deserves so much credit for the body acting/ language. Just the slight nod of the head, side ways glance, drop of the shoulders just expresses so much of how he is feeling in response to Luke’s words of disappointment & compassion for his father.
I watch this and it makes me abhor the new trilogy so much. How can this Luke so full of love, compassion & hope for his father, who has committed so many ghastly crimes in the name of the Darkside, betray & forget his principles & emotions so easily when it comes to his nephew, who has only up that point shown potential for darkness.
Agreed on all counts. Mr. Prowse is one of the unsung heroes of Star Wars. The ST was just trash. They ruined Luke's character.
We don’t count Disney Star Wars as real Star Wars. After episode 6 there is no more Star Wars.
because management at Disney never had a plan, they just thought the IP was so successful that it was too big to fail
Prowse was a legend, and came from my hometown. He nailed everything about Vader.

The dark side relies on hate to flourish, Vader was expecting hate from Luke but only got love and it completely broke him. A powerful message that translates into life.
Indeed. I had a girl in my graduating class that I antagonized so badly that when I saw her again in 2017-ish she still harbored resentment toward me, and I did not blame her one bit. I did go on to apologize and told her that she could even punch me if she wanted to and I knew I deserved it. But she saw I was sincere and she immediately let go of her resentment toward me and we've been friends ever since. I drop in on her from time to time on FB. Kind words and a sincere apology and a small display of love can break through the strongest barriers of hate and suffering.
there is a famous saying "kill them with your kindness." is what Luke was doing here
@@timslee0618it was that but also the fact that it was a son speaking to his father
@@crazyman7671 I also have a story about letting go of my hate. I have had been clinging onto hatred since middle school and up to my senior year. In my senior year, I had a lot going on in my life; appendicitis... but there was this one boy. He was someone who was often bullied because he had autism and we weren't friends until the end of senior year. Given I almost lost my life, I had pretty much went under a very big transformation. For years I didn't care about if I was to die, believing I was worthless, and so I reflected myself onto otuers. When I started changing, I have cut off negative "friends" and befriended better people. I never bullied him but I ignored him and allowed my "friends" to bully him which I felt guilty for. Despite this, we both walk the stage on graduation (we were both class of 2023 so this year) and he taught me to realize I should be better. He was not the only one who helped me in redeeming myself but he was one who was quick enough to forgive me when I went through it.
I think he expected hate from Luke because he got hate from the Jedi. Luke wasn’t acting like any Jedi he had ever met.
I always felt Vader was wanting to hug Luke so much on this scene and used all of his power to not do it

I bet Luke knew calling him that would make him react that way, and when he didn't react with his usually "life-ending viscousness", that confirmed exactly that Luke knew he was the one who could bring him back.

What people don't realize in this scene is that Darth Vader actually gives one of his officers praise and tells him "good work, Commander"
Vader also praised his minions at Cloud City. He has no problem with recognizing those who perform well.
Because his choking those who fail him is so iconic, people forget that he can and will praise those who deserve it.
To be fair, the officer wasn’t a suck up or complacent. He considered the possibility that there could be other Rebels in the area and knew it merited investigation.
What people don’t realize is that guy didn’t do anything. All he did was escort Luke from point A to point B. Why is he being commended? I don’t know

Right on. And also, I think he’s basically telling Luke, not as a threat, but as a warning, that there are things about the dark side that Luke doesn’t know, and it’s just consumed Vader to the point where he can’t escape it

*"That name no longer has any meaning for me,"*

Vader's reaction when Luke drops Anakin's name is just perfect. No one has called him by that name in over 20 years at this point in the story, and there's a hint of resentment in Vader's voice when he hears it. Like he doesn't want to remember the man he was, because it comes with memories of all his failings... especially Padme.

When Vader says "It Is too late for me, Son." he doesn't sound like one of the most feared Sith lords to ever exist, he sounds like a dad trying to console his son. I know it's been mentioned hundreds of times in these comments, but that was Anakin speaking, not Vader.
he knows by the end of this, one of them, if not both, will die.
So powerful
That's the whole point: Anakin is Vader. It was Anakin who slaughtered the Jedi, Anakin who tortured Leia and Han, Anakin who dismembered Luke. There is no alternate personality. There is, and has always been, only Anakin.
@@Cailus3542 I hate the *very* recent take that somehow Vader is a separate personality from Anakin. It makes zero sense. There would be no reason for him to hate Obi Wan and the Jedi, to think of Padme, to have resentment against Palpatine, to consider Luke *Skywalker* to be *his* son and to want to have Luke rule at his side if he weren't just Anakin consumed by the Dark Side, which has had zero "split personality" effects on any other Sith Lord that we've seen (Palpatine certainly had no identity crisis).
You don't just stop being you. The labels of names matters little. What's important is that VADER is being genuine in what he says.
Vader's mistake is trying to reject his past instead of accepting it. It's what fuels his anger.
The 'look' on Vader's face when he finds out Luke surrendered. It's like he's thinking, "What in the blue blazes were you thinking, son?!"

This is my Luke. One who does believe his father can turn back to the light. Not Disney’s Luke who thought about killing his nephew when he sensed the dark side in him.

"It is too late for me, son." Most powerful line in this scene, and possibly the whole movie. 1: He acknowledges he screwed up and it's too late for him to turn back. 2: I believe this is one of the only times Vader ever addresses Luke as "son". If I were Luke at that point I'd be bawling saying "Daddy forget about all this and just come home with me and be like a normal family".
I have always thought that when Luke says "Then my father is truly dead" and Vader stands there alone after Luke is escorted away, that Vader begins to think to himself that this was not supposed to be what became of him and he wonders with great sadness about his life had he stayed in the Jedi order or at the very least, not turned to the dark side and raised Luke (Idk if he knows about Leia at this point) and what his life would have been.

I always wonder what the people like those stormtroopers are thinking hearing that Vader has a son and that he's a rebel.
When would they have found out though?
They're thinking, we better not think anything or else he'll read our minds and force choke us to death.
Wouldn't he just read that small internal conflict and Force Choke them anyway?
My guess is they were thinking: "Wow. Lord Vader has a son? And he's with the rebellion?" "I heard he's a jedi too." "Impossible we killed them like....20 years ago." "Then why does he have a lightsabre?" "He must've stole it from the temple for a submariner. What's left of it I mean." "I heard Lord Vader was a jedi too." "Good thing he joined us or we'd killed him too." "Still if that rebel is Lord Vader's son why is he against us? I mean Lord Vader's clearly the Emperor's heir. He'll probably take over the empire when the Emperor kicks the bucket then he'll need an heir too." "Yeah. But his son's with the rebellion." For the first time in a long time. Someone told him the truth. Luke, his son and you sense the joy Vader had.
Luke: Come with me Father.

Luke: Father, I don't care about what you've done in the past. I don't care about how much power we could wield. I just want you to come home.

Vader only slaughtered numerous Rebel squadrons some of then were Lukes friends that Vader killed
Grand Inquisitor Sug The Dark Clone of Gus
Id like to interpret home as meaning with his family. To be with Luke and Leia.
U can feel ANAKIN is tortured in that scene.
He always has been
I can almost see him crying
He was tortured when he fought ahsoka
Luke calls Vader father for the first time and all we see is him give a little turn to aknowledge his son, but you can tell just from his body language that Luke stirred him real good just by calling him that.
Anakin spent his whole life after Padme's death lamenting the fact that he'd never get to hear his children call him that. I imagine it cut him deep to hear Luke say that.
When Vader says its too late, that is actually the turning point for him. Luke's faith in his father's goodness has him wanting to believe. Sideous originally used fear to tempt Vader to the dark side, Luke now tenpts him back to the light through love. Very good writing, almost Shakespearean in it's symmetry.
We can clearly see how there is really a conflict inside Vader. Darth Vader, dark lord of the Sith, usually acts with brutality and with anger. Confident of what he does, harsh with his subordinates. Here, we can clearly see Vader on a depression. He doesn't talks in a fully direct way, nor with a high voice. He is calmed, like bored. When Luke said that there was a conflict within him, a normal Vader would had answered with words of how he is more powerful than ever. But he just says that it is too late for him.
That was the most important line. "No hope for me." Hope = turning back to the good side. He realizes his son is right, but feels he is too far gone. Look at the very end how he reflects to himself. God damn, other than the Ewoks this movie is a masterpiece.
***** But he kind like sounds like he doesn't cares. He knew that the emperor wanted his son to replace him, he even says "he is your new master now". The character development of Vader till this point is perfection!!!
Yeah, it really is sad watching his progression, he lost all hope for himself.
chopperbubba That's true, in episode 5, he didn't even showed emotion when luke jumped. Here, the dark side really destroyed his soul. He didn't felt hatred here, he felt depressed, disappointed with himself, only wanting to die. Like I said, he talks like if he is bored, and even tells Luke that Sidius is his new master now. He knew Sidious was going to replace him, and he didn't cared.
i agree with you, but i think the line that always impressed me is when luke said: "then my father is truly death", Vader reaction was impresive, the first real encounter with his son, he tell him a devastating thing like you´re death to me
The Tragedy of Anakin Skywalker is perfect; lost his mother, lost his apprentice, lost his master, lost his wife, believed his children was dead for nearly 2 decades, but never *TRULY* lost his son and had saved him in the end, along with his daughter ironically, by killing Sidious and saving the galaxy forever, but sadly no one ever knew how the Emperor truly died. This, my friends, is the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker.
Luckily, his son, Luke Skywalker, and his grandchildren, Jaina, Jacen, Anakin, Ben, and the rest that came after continued the name of the Skywalker family and redeemed it in the face of the galaxy despite all the struggles.

Jaina Solo was in Legends. She was never canonized.
"I know there is good in you..." This probably caught Vader completely off guard. He was most likely expecting Luke to come at him with accusations, about the fate of his mother and himself, killing Obi-Wan, abandoning all the ideals of the Jedi. Vader probably had a speech ready like, "The Jedi were not as righteous and glamorous as you've been told."
But instead, Luke addresses him as Anakin and Father, and has a significant amount of hope that he will do the right thing even now. For years he had only been treated as a faceless figure to be feared and appeased by others, or else crushed and humiliated as a slave by the Emperor. But Luke treats him like a real person, and one who has a responsibility to him and to what's right.
Exactly. Luke is the only person to ever treat annakin with respect. No constant lectures or demands, commands. He has ZERO resentment for his absentee father despite all the things he's done. His son is basically a saint. And fiercely loyal to his friends and family. Annakin seems overwhelmed by this
It’s unfortunate how both Disney and the Expanded Universe ruined this scene by portraying Vader as a psycho that murders everything that lives instead of a misunderstood villain that, as ruthless he can be with his enemies, can also show diplomacy and compassion for those who are not (civilians, slaves, *children* ), a man who indeed has good in him. They also, subsequently make Luke look like a fool.

Knowing how sadistic and cruel the Emperor is, and how he's tortured Vader and many others so many times before, this line hits pretty hard. Vader is a murderer, but I can't help feeling bad for him. He is again what he was for so long before the Jedi found him. Vader is a slave.
He's also trying to tell Luke that there are things about Palpatine that Luke doesn't know. It was like a dad trying to secretly warn his son.

@@FalconsEye58094 well if I remember correctly succumbing to the dark side slowly cuts you off from the light side so if someone becomes a full blown sith lord like Vader has there's literally nothing left for him on the otherside. He does a lot of voice work these days, yes, but it's not really quite as rewarding, is it?
I watched an interview where he said he hates doing live action and he much rather do voice work because he's not self conscious about his facial expressions and other live action things.
You can hear in his voice at numerous moments how proud Vader is of Luke in this scene. The way he admires the new lightsaber he constructed himself like what Anakin did as a padawan, realises the bravery of Luke for arriving to face him alone rather than joining the Rebels in a full-scale attack, and senses the near-godlike potential of the Skywalker blood running through his veins - Vader probably wanted nothing more than to give him a hug.
In that moment was Anakin Who wants to hug Luke
You can truly see Vader in shock to see his son until he grabs his lightsaber that the officer gives him.
This was such a pinnacle moment, you can see Vader's entire disposition change when Luke acknowledges him as Anakin. His real father. Very gripping scene, to say the least.
This is a wonderful scene... particularly how Luke completely (emotionally) disarms Vader. Vader is expecting Luke to be the cocky, defiant young rebel he met in Empire... someone who hates him. That Luke has matured and is calm and peaceful and is appealing to Vader's humanity... that was unexpected. It's all there in Jones's vocal performance. He starts off sounding like the antagonistic, hate-filled Vader from a New Hope... and at times, begins to sound like a father talking to his son. That his son is disappointed in him hurts him more than if his son merely hated him. He is too familiar with being hated for that particular emotion to even register.
