Watching this when it came out in May 1983 I was absolutely on the edge of my seat horrified at Luke being slowly killed by the force lightning from the Emperor. People were gasping and yelling in despair and the moment Vader grabbed the Emperor and threw him into the core shaft man oh man it was as if the roof came off the theater, people were clapping and crying and shouting with absolute relief and joy. Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Sidious? I thought not. It’s a story the Jedi would not tell you. It’s Sith and meme legend. Darth Sidious was a dark lord of the Sith. So powerful and so wise. He had such a knowledge of the Dark Side, the only thing he was afraid of was getting thrown down a 65 story reactor shaft, which of course, eventually he did. He taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him. Ironic. He survived an attack from his lightning blast, but not a fall from a great height.

If you will not turn to the dark side, then perhaps she will."
It's interesting to think about what Obi Wan said about only Sith dealing in absolutes, because as Luke says "Never!" and attacks, he's dealing in an absolute and tapping into anger and aggression. Which is almost guaranteed what the Emperor and Darth Vader were trying to accomplish, bait Luke into acting from there. Thankfully, Luke realized what was going on and stopped when he saw what was going on.

    • @stormthrush37
      @stormthrush37 4 месяца назад +3

@@tooru-kun4178 Agreed 100%. Either way though there were little things intentionally done in the prequels that tie into the originals and this may be one of them. Personally I took Obi Wan's prequel absolutes line slightly differently, very similar but slightly different - that the Jedi were operating from more of a dark sided place than they realized, that they had been corrupted by it themselves and didn't really even see it, which I think kind of ties into the whole Mace/Yoda exchange about how their ability to use the force was diminished. There was at least some small awareness at the top something was wrong with the Jedi, even if they ultimately didn't do or say anything about it. Speaking of a Jedi doing something dark sided, how about the end of the Mustafar duel? Leaving a crippled and helpless man alone to burn in agony and likely die? Not light sided by any definition I can think of!! Pretty dark sided in fact!

Luke won by refusing to kill Vader, getting his anger back under control and not allowing Palpatine the satisfaction of corrupting him to the dark side and controlling him like his dad Anakin.
That act of defiance from Luke, annoyed Palpatine because he failed to manipulate and corrupt a Jedi to the dark side for the first time ever,
He then proceeded to kill Luke with his force, displaying that sadistic face, later turning to anger, rage and hatred.
Palpatine thought he had broken Vader to the extent that he won't fight back, boy was he wrong
Anakin had finally broken free from the dark side and Palpatine's control over him, picked him up and threw him down the reactor shaft to his death. He was not going to idly stand by and let Palpatine take away what he had left of Padme, his son Luke and kill him.
Luke was right, Palpatine was cocky and it became his demise in the end.

My dad taught me this as I watched a conversation between my parents and my father explained to my mother why Darth Vader sacrificed himself to save his son. Later, when I became a dad myself, I was still there for my children (even now as young adults) as my dad was for my brothers and me so many years prior.

Original version without the added “NO” is better. It didn’t need to be said. The action was all the communication needed. Thanks for posting tho!!

  • @AzulStryer

Both versions of this scene are great in my opinion.
OG - The silence adds to Vader pondering whether he should save his son, who by all counts should despise him but sees good in him, and true to Luke's belief, Vader chooses good
Edited - The one with the two "no's" adds a small but poignant addition, **the reawakening of Anakin Skywalker.** Luke went through what he did, but never turned to the dark... and right now he was going to lose Luke just like how he lost Padme, and he didn't want to fail Luke like he failed Padme

So if Luke kills the emperor, he goes to the dark side. If Vader kills him, he goes to the good side. Same act, different outcomes.

Palpatine had a contingency plan at that point. 3 in fact if you count the other stuff and sequel trilogy.
    1. He haunts everyone to continue his Empire (Supposedly but its based on the books).
    2. He uses a droid to use his recordings of giving the Empire orders (Battlefront 2).
    3. Cloned himself in advance but used what was left of himself for some reason. (Episode IX)

You know, ignoring all the supplemental material, Legends or Disney (Ahsoka Tano, his knighting and Obi-Wan declaring him "brother", the Darkhorse Empire/ Rebellion, Darth Vader comics by Kieron Gillen or Charles Soule, "Rise of the dark lord" by James Luceno EVERYTHING OUTSIDE THE ORIGINALS AND THE PREQUELS) it's still really moronic for Palps to torture Luke right before Vadee...eer... Anakin's eyes. The Emperor's plan to turn the Chosen One to the dark sideTM was to make him believe he's not loved and make his fear of losing everything cloud his judgement; add that Darth had been spending a lotta time with his son, this was pretty much him acting like a Jawa poking a Krayt Dragon with a lightsaber.
Man's made one good plan to become Emperor and then threw away all logic XD

Redeemer and destroyer. Pawn and messiah. Anakin mastered both sides of the Force and brought balance. Qui-Gon was right all along, he was the chosen one. His love for his family drove him to the dark side and back.

I know ROTJ has some plot issues abd technically issues but i feel like to me it really has alot of great moments. But i will never ever believe that the little tue fighter crashing into the bridge would be able to disable it . The tie fighter would be really way to small to do that much damage to a ship thats that massive maybe if another star destroyer got disabled and crashed into the Super star destroyer that would be more realistic in my mind of taking down that massively strong and powerful ship
