After not using my sewing machine for 10 years this is the first piece of clothing I ever made! I used a thrifted tablecloth and because I had leftover fabric I decided to line it and create 4 tiers. Sweat and stress but your instructions were so clear and it turned out so nice, I feel like a princess wearing it :) thank you!!
Girl I know that white skirt in the thumbnail was so easy for you to make but I’m overthinking it and would love if you could make a separate quick video cuz it’s so cute
@@vnquyenjust the width of your top tier. And then cut it the length you like. Add seam allowance Everywhere. And it looks like she used a deep hem, for example like 4". Other people have made tutorials for this skirt as well. Search how to sew a gathered skirt. Good luck.
I’ve just sewed two of these- and you were right that the second one was WAY cuter than the first! 😂 The only thing I would add to your tutorial is maybe for you to choose fabric to demonstrate that has a very obvious right and wrong side. Other than that, everything was very clear and you are a natural teacher!
This is the best beginner video I’ve ever watched! Your video was so easy to follow, answered any questions I had as I was watching and you’re just so humble.
I have already made two and am ordering fabric for more! Such an easy tutorial to follow. Sydney is the absolute best at explaining things in an easy way!
I have not sewn anything in a long time and haven’t had much success with sewing garments in the past but you are inspiring me to sew again! Your instructions are so clear, it is especially helpful that you walk us through the math!!!😂 Thank you so much!!!❤
I was about to buy a similar pattern, but decided to follow this tutorial and save the $$$. It turned out better then I could have hoped :D Thank you so much!
Thank you so much .I successfully completed the skirt. There were a lot of tears and stress involved but I did it .I love it and the is a great tutorial as beginner sewist.I have to make a another so I can improved on the mistakes.
This tutorial is perfect! I also have a substantial waist to hip ratio difference and none of the other tutorials mentioned how to ensure it also fits your hips. I'm so excited to make this :)
This was a great tutorial! Thank you for including all the details about figuring out measurements. I've been sewing for years but making clothing is new to me. I have such a hard time getting the fit right.
im in the middle of making the lane pants as we speak! just got the tie dress pattern today can't wait to get this one next! thank you for giving me the Inspo to sew again! im in my crafting era and loving it! I also made the quilted purse as my first project and I get so many compliments on it! thank you for all you do!!
This is a very good tutorial. I especially like how you calculated the percentages for the tiers...so helpful for math challenged sewers like me. The only thing I'm adding is understitching the pockets at the side seams. This helps keep them from popping out as you take your hands in/out. I'm sewing my skirt as we speak. Can't wait to wear it. :-)
I’m using this as a base to make a few dresses and skirts for an upcoming beach vacation - thank you so much for giving me confidence! Also - maybe it’s just me - but self drafting feels so much more manageable to do for a weekend project rather than finding patterns, having to print, assemble everything, cut them out... I tend to lose steam and give up without actually sewing anything, or I feel like I’ve wasted too much time and rush the actual sewing, resulting in a poor quality garment I don’t want to wear out in public. This helps me keep momentum and keep sewing!
I'm not sure how I stumbled across your videos to be honest however I am so excited that I did!! I know how to sew just barely but was given a free machine a couple of months back and I wasn't quite sure what to do with it. This is my second video of yours and you are making excited to try my hand at making some stuff!! Thank you so much for sharing your process😊
Please I’m begging you please make more videos! I have no idea what I’m doing but this genuinely helped me so much! I feel confident and encouraged to give this a try!
Fantastic tutorial, very clear and easy to follow - your finished skirt is beautiful 😍 thank you so much for sharing your video 🙏 I shall be making my own skirt very soon! 🤗
thank you so much! skirt turned out awesome, fantastic clear instructions + love your vibe :) thank you for making a note of different body shapes. I'm also pear shaped and struggle to find clothes that fit me properly, hence why I wanted to start making my own
I love your tutorial! I love a tier that doesn't have a lot of gathering like yours. And I've gone through like 20 videos, and all they talk about is how long the tier is...they never show exactly the round about skirt or not going into details. Or even show the step by step tutorial like u just did. I'm sooo thankful I found you. Thank you! 🙏🏽 ❤
Hi Sydney, after watching your Video at least 25 times I'm now sewing the frigging skirt😅. Hopefully it will fit(fingers crossed). Greetings from Germany. Anja
Thank you for single handedly reviving my love for sewing!!! This tutorial and the endless possibilities with the Syd Tie Top/Dress pattern have been such a blessing!!
Hi! I just wanna say that you're so pretty and your tutorial videos are very helpful for someone who just start learning to sew. I hope my first skirt would turn out well ❤
Love the video, thanks for sharing! I'm just about to sew my first project and this might be it! Quick question - how do you know which is the selvage edge if you're using a thrifted bedsheet? :) Thanks!
Love love love your new studio! I just got some felt tiles to pin my fabric to in my studio space and they also work as sound dampeners. They might help with the slight echoey sound and be multi-functional for you. I used the brand Felt Right, but there's probably other ones out there too.
Hello! This tutorial is so amazing. I have my yardage and am going shopping tomorrow! So excited. For the elastic measurement---is it just the waist circumference + seem allowance? Thanks!
I just started making my first skirt with this. I think I cut some of my fabric wrong, perpendicular to the selvedge rather than parallel, but i think i'm just going to try and see how it goes, I don't have enough to start again😅😅 I'm using two colours of the same fabric with a middle tier a different colour
Absolutely love this skirt and video. I am really hoping for more videos on making clothes from measurements rather than a pattern! Would also love to learn how to make a pattern based on our own measurements!
This tutorial is so great! I have a tiny bit of sewing experience and have been wanting to get back into it, and watching you do it makes it seem so much less intimidating! Up until now I have been consuming ALL the sewing content but not actually doing anything, and with your help I just finished drafting my little pattern and I’m ready to start cutting! Quick question, though, if you happen to see this… why does the gathering work better perpendicular to the selvedge as opposed to parallel?
Syndey this is so cute! I cannot wait to make this! You should do a video on your serger settings 🥺 I have the same serger and can’t seem to get my tensions right
Thank you so much this was so helpful as a beginner! One question - I added pockets to my skirt and I’m not sure how to finish/open the pockets… after I did the straight stitch down the length of the skirt around the curve of the pocket, there is a section where the front and back panels are not sewn together, like where the opening should be but the pocket itself is stitched into the panel. Have I missed something? Thanks!
Hi! I'm not sure I'm correctly picturing what you're describing. If you've followed the instructions in the video, your pockets should be finished and open. You could DM me via Instagram and send me pictures so I can better see what you're talking about if you still need help!
Absolutely following this great tutorial and having a blast! This is the math I love to work on :) Empowering!! I have always followed patterns and this is super refreshing! Question- I want to add a drawstring with elastic for the the waistband. I usually make a drawstring out of the same fabric (like for merchant and mills 101 trousers for ex.). Do you know of any good drawstring or something to use that isn't like polyester cording or something like that? Ideas welcome! Thank you so much for all of your awesome videos. You're amazing! :)
Just discovered your page with this video and IM IN LOVE!! This skirt is absolute perfection, and your instructions were incredibly detailed!!! I really appreciate how you explained how to create an article of clothing from scratch - it’s given me so much inspiration!!!
Almost done with my skirt!! It was so easy and its looking sooo cute, how long did you cut your elastic? Should it be the same length as your waist or slightly smaller?
Following along for my first solo project and is a really fab guide! Do I need to do anything to finish the side seams after pressing them open or will they be ok?
I just found this and I am so so obsessed, never really sewed before. Could you explain how you did the white skirt? I think it has no tiers just one panel on either side maybe?
No the method is the same! You would just calculate your measurements for one long panel instead of braking it up into tiers. And no gathering! You can skip to adding the pockets/waistband.
Loved the tutorial, made me excited to pick up sewing again!! I always have a hard time choosing the right fabric for the project when ordering online, what fabric weight works best for this type of skirt?
just finished making my first item of clothing using this video, it's not perfect but it's mine! thank you for this, i can't wait to make my next piece from one of your other tutorials!🫶
Really helpful and clear. My favourite skirt to wear has three tiers like this but the top of the skirt has 8 inches of shirring. It’s super comfortable to wear. Do you think the measurements would be the same for the top of the skirt if it was to be shirred instead of using a piece of elastic? Thanks so much.
Probably similar! I’ve never shirred fabric before, so you could make your first attempt a practice skirt! If it works out, amazing! If not, you’ll learn better for your “official” skirt!
This is a very comprehensive tutorial!! I am a beginner and found this very easy to follow. I do have one question though, what fabric would you recommend for this project?
Can I ask a silly question...how could you make this skirt without the tears? Would it be one long rectangle, or would the sides slightly angle out towards the bottom? (Loved the video so much, thank you!) X !
Not silly at all! Honestly you can do it however you like, but one long rectangle would work great! All the math principles from this tutorial would work the same, just without multiple tiers.
I'd suggest looking up a pattern for circle skirts if you still want some nice drape. Half circle skirt gives really volume without being too heavy when in full length:)

seconding this!!!
I agree! A tutorial on the white skirt would be fantastic! It’s perfect!
Hi it is the same as this video but just think of it as just having 1 tier in total.
