    As a crocheter, I'm really tempted to get into sewing because I'm so used to creating something stitch by stitch... the idea of already having the fabric and 'just' sewing it together seems like cheating 😂

    • @lizrodrigues550

      Just got my first sewing machine as a crocheter i feel the same!

    • @CaitMakes
      @CaitMakes  4 месяца назад +19

      Haha when you put it that way sewing is totally cheating 🤣 You have far more patience than I do for sure, and you should definitely give sewing a go. Come to the dark side 🤣🤣

    • @storey662
      @storey662 4 месяца назад +9

      As a knitter who **just** started sewing, it REALLY DOES feel like cheating, but it’s also much more challenging and time-consuming than that “knitting” mindset led me to believe - if that makes sense. Lol.
      You don’t have to create the fabric itself stitch by stitch, but it kind of feels like each sewing project is perpetually in what would be the final stages of a knit project.. the more-fiddly parts that require more brain power. Lol. For example, weaving in ends, Kitchener stitching seams together, sewing on buttons, binding off in a particular pattern, etc, etc.
      For me, knitting is an almost-mindless activity except for those “finishing” steps on certain projects. Somehow sewing seems to feel like the whole project is those kind of finishing steps and almost no “mindless” activity, but it very well could be because I just started and still have to concentrate so hard on everything.
      It is incredibly fun, though! And SUPER satisfying/rewarding when you can start and finish a project within such a small time frame when compared to knitting/crochet.

    • @lizrodrigues550
      @lizrodrigues550 4 месяца назад +2

      @@storey662 perfect way to put it!!! Crocheting i dont even have to look at once i have a few rows down. Sewing, if you look away, you could end up with 2 fingers together!!

    "Don't make a pillow if a pillow doesn't excite you." YES! The first thing I ever sewed was a play outfit for my son, without a pattern just drafting it myself. It was really difficult and I learned so many skills (also took me weeks to make where a master sewer with a pattern could have easily made it in like an hour or two) but I had SO much fun, learned a ton, and now my son has a cute and unique outfit. Such a fan of doing what excites you when starting a new hobby, rather than just what's easiest.

    Hello Caitlynn ! Thanks for sharing your suggestions for beginner sewers ! Hope you don't mind me commenting, but I would like to let you know about the BRENÉ camisole top. This is a sewing pattern from my own indie brand called Ose Patterns ("ose" means "being bold" in French). I created this pattern with beginners in mind. The pattern, instructions and videos are in English.
    To tell you about my background, I changed my career to study at a fashion school and in a maison for two years. I learnt pattern making with the draping technique so this is how I create my designs. Happy summertime !

    ❤ I am not seeing many talented people like you on RUclips. Mostly there are just women trying do garments, choosing wrong fit to their body and not the right fabric, ending up looking homemade or “old weirdo lady” style. But you have a good taste and imagination to plan your projects like a professional and your garments and style choices+customisation really complement your appearance🙂

    • @rhonddalesley

      It’s nice to be kind and remember that everyone is at a different point in their sewing journey and some are still beginners compared to those of us who’ve been sewing garments for a long time.
      I’ve been sewing my own clothes for 40 years plus and still fluff up by choosing the wrong fabric or a new style that doesn’t end up flattering my body shape or I just don’t like it. I still choose the wrong size on occasion and only yesterday I cut a front bodice flat instead of on the fold 🫣 the thing is, you don’t know unless you try and we’re all still learning, I take my hat off to people who have the confidence to bravely share their projects!

    Great video! I’ve been sewing for years, but these are still patterns I want to check out. I think it’s so important to choose patterns that make you excited to work on it and want to wear the item. My first project was a lined purse (like a tote bag with a flat bottom). I wanted it so much, and even now more than 10 years after I still wear it a lot. Now that I think about it I brought it to the gym just earlier today.

      I don’t know exactly what fabric it was but it was a four-way-stretch synthetic material I got at JoAnn. It pilled and snagged super easily so it’s really the only fabric I’ve used that I wouldn’t recommend unfortunately haha. But I think you’d get a similar finish as long as it’s a four way stretch material with a bit of weight. Hope that helps some! Thanks for watching!

      Thank you! I'm so glad you found it helpful! Personally I recommend getting something second hand. My first sewing machine was a Singer I found on Facebook Marketplace for like $70 and it served me really well. I wouldn't recommend getting anything digital to start with personally, but I think it has a lot to do with personal preference. I say start with something affordable and make sure you like it and then invest in something fancier/more specific to your needs later. :)

    can you PLEASE do a tutorial or a reel on how you made that elastic bust top? (your first make)
    it looks like a fold over top but my brain can’t compute how to make it!

    • @CaitMakes
      @CaitMakes  8 месяцев назад

      Hi! I will absolutely put it on my list of "reels I should make". I will try to explain what I did one more time quickly in hopes that it helps you though: So I followed The Essential's Club's tutorial step by step (highly recommend) the only adjustment I made was that I added an extra 4 inches to the height of the rectangle that you'll cut out. I then placed the elastic channel about 4 inches from the top of the rectangle. Once I put the finished garment on the fabric naturally folded over since my arms pushed it down on the side. I promise it was super easy to do, no secret extra steps, I'm positive you could create it no problem. :) Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching!

    They are all stunning, but do you wear bras with all of them? I feel I would need to but then the bodice part wouldn't look as great. Any tips?

    • @CaitMakes
      @CaitMakes  4 месяца назад

      Thank you! Most of my makes do not require a bra for me. Strapless is definitely the best bet for a lot of them or any sticky bra options. Also recommend sewing in support if needed. Hope that helps some!

    Can you start doing tutorials with some of the patterns you recommend. Like testing a pattern and showing a beginner how to do it? I’ve been trying to find videos like that but they never explain it well enough or go way too fast

    Thank you for sharing!!! May I ask, what fabric did you use for the Isila Dress? It's so beautiful!

    • @CaitMakes
      @CaitMakes  7 месяцев назад +1

      Of course! I hope you found it helpful! Thank you, I shared a few different versions of the Isila Dress. The blue was made from thrifted curtains that were sort of a brocade fabric, the pink was a linen blend from JoAnne, and the green was a linen suiting fabric. I hope that helps! Thanks for watching! :)

      @@CaitMakes Thank you, that helps! Maybe I missed it but what about the one you used for the wedding? Also, did you make it as a circle skirt? I'm so new to sewing ^^'

    • @CaitMakes
      @CaitMakes  6 месяцев назад

      @happymochinee the one for the wedding was made from curtains I found at the thrift store, they were a thick brocade fabric. I used the Isila pattern for the skirt as well, it’s a half circle skirt I believe. Hope that helps! :)

    • @CaitMakes
      @CaitMakes  14 дней назад +1

      Hi! I love finding fabric at thrift stores the most, definitely check your local shops. In person I go to JoAnn or Hobby Lobby since I don’t have any local shops where I live. But some great small business fabric stores that you can order from online are Blackbird Fabrics or Salt Lake Sewciety. 😊❤️
