I've grown to love sewing for myself over the past two years! I've become quite comfortable with sewing more beginner garments with elastic or ties, and these easier pieces are relaxing for me to make. What I am intimidated by is learning some more involved techniques like invisible zippers, pants, welt pockets - which are all things I tend to avoid, but would love to incorporate into my sewing!
I have a sewing machine but really haven't gotten the chance to really get into it cause of my twins, so now that they are getting older I wanna start sewing following patterns 😍
About 4 years ago I decided no more ill fitting shop bought clothes . I have sewn all my clothing bar from jeans and bras . I keep my patterns fairly classic which means the fabric I use changes the looks . Sewing is my time to relax and create
i paint, & something that really helps is remembering that not everything has to be a masterpiece. you can just paint to paint. you don’t have to share it, you don’t even have to like it. you waste nothing by just doing what you enjoy doing. i recently started to sew & i really feel the same! i ENJOY it. if something doesn’t turn out great, or it falls apart, then you learn. i’ve sewn maybe 10 articles of clothing so far, & i have been able to learn something new every time. & each thing has gotten so much better! it doesn’t have to be intimidating 🖤
I don't remember when I couldn't sew. I started sewing when I was 3. I went on to win blue ribbons for some of my pieces that I entered in fairs, etc. Then I taught sewing classes for over 20 years. I loved it. And have several different kinds of sewing macnines. At 82 I still sew and will continue to sew and teach as long as i am able.
I read in a couple of places that sewing is actually very therapeutic and helps with aging. It’s great for the nervous system and very relaxing. Keep up with the good work girl!🤍
I have started sewing my own wardrobe for about a year now and before that I just did small alterations. One thing that makes it less intimidating is that you can always just use your seam ripper and start again and to always be gentle and patient 🥰
I wanted to start sewing specifically for making my own clothes because I can’t find what I want. Just got my sewing machine for my birthday and the first thing I made was a floor length robe with a hood. I am currently curled up in my creation ❤
I only sew for myself anymore, with a few exceptions and it’s my ease down after the work day! I love how creative it allows you to be even though I wear mostly plain patterns etc
I've been making my own clothes for about three years now ... as in much more than than the odd piece like I used to .. and I love it! I work in corporate and I now wear me made pants shirts blouses and coats to work every day! It's my style and fabrics I love and it fits me! Very satisfying!
thank you.. finally someone who knows how to do an original hem without taking "the original stitching" out..I alwys did it that way , my customers loved it!!!! sewing is a restful ,enjoyable process, no matter how easy or difficult a project.
I grew up learning to sew for myself even without any sellers around me. but I didn't do the skill for years and now it intimidates me a bit. but I'm trying to get more comfortable again. that's where this video came in:) I want to show my own style
What a great skill to learn when you were young!! I am glad that this video came at the right time. I bet when you begin again, it may be like riding a bike. I love that you'll be able to share your own style too!
I live sewing my spring wardrobe. It's so relaxing. I've made 4 pairs of Jersey lounge pants, four jersey shorts and tank tops, a skirt, a nightgown, a sports bra, and some work out shorts! Phew!
I sew everyday for work - but its boat canvas. Its definitely an amazing skill to have and not many people know how to sew anymore My great grandma and my grandma were seamstresses. My mom never learned, so my grandma was super excited when I took this sewing job. She recently gave me my great grandma's Rocketeer sewing machine, so I'm now going to teach myself how to make clothes and other accessories. It's definitely a change from industrial machines and canvas but I catch on quick. Eventually, i want to learn alterations, as i have so many people asking me to alter clothes. I know how to alter boat canvas with hems and darts, so I'm not completely in the dark on how to tighten things up- clothes are just so intimidating 😅
I love your video, I am a hand quilter, and can totally relate to setting the atmosphere. I enjoy every part of quilting, from choosing colors, to prepping, it's all so therapeutic.
Hi. I am new. How delightful you are. For me sewing for me is excellent. The problem i have is that i have been busy for a few years. But since i have come across vids, i have slowed right down and i was going to continue some sewing on my olive velveeteen dress today. I had some art to complete first. Time ran away, but i have my craft room set up. Tomorrow i hope too for two hours only. Thanky for your video...
Hi Rooney, Thank you for putting this online for us to enjoy. I love to make clothes, but usually end up making some new pieces for my children and hardly ever for myself. This video inspired me to think about me for once. For my upcoming Birthday I am going to wear a "handcrafted by me" dress! Please continue posting these motivational videos, you are a star.
Seeing people making their own clothes on youtube and be appreciative to their works inspires me to learn sewing and wanna make my own clothes by using a fabric that scattered* or gathered at house. Not only that, as a fashion brand owner also i wanna learn to sew that i can produce the design that i made and sell it to the world ❤ As new subscribers of your channel, i'm hoping that in the future i can be a professional sewist and designer like you ❤ Greetings from indonesia and pardon for my english, since english is my second language 💜🙏🏼
I am not really intimidated sewing my own clothes. However I take my time and make sure I am doing it properly. This is because I have made careless mistakes in the past. I enjoy sewing and I find it relaxing and pleasing. I know that I probably won't see anyone wearing the same outfit or see the same material. It is my design and that is satisfying. Best wishes Ann in South Australia.
i was so intimidated! picking a sewing machine was very difficult for me but i bit the bullet and bought fabric and supplies and jumped right in! the first thing i made was my daughters’ halloween costumes last year. i made a lot of mistakes along the way but now i’m hooked!
That's the best way - jumping right in! So cool to hear and how special that you made a Halloween costume that your daughter will be able to look back on :) I agree, it can be addicting!
Hi, I love sewing, it's my relax time. I learned it from my grandma and mum. But I have never made clothes for others, I found it much harder. And that's my next project
I love sewing for myself! If I’m excited about the final outfit then I love it and find it satisfying. The only time I find it a chore is doing mending or altering jobs that I always put off. But I’m always happy I did it!
I’ve only made clothes for my babies thus far, because making clothes for myself definitely feels more intimidating. I think it’s because I use more fabric when making my own clothes, so I don’t want to mess up anything!
My husbands grandmother just passed down her sewing machine and materials to me. Last week we set up a space for me to create down in our basement and I have been sewing everyday since! I’m a stay at home mom to 2 under 2 and have already felt rejuvenated in the last week getting to take some time to myself (when I get the chance) to get my mind focused and make something with my hands. 🤍 so I far I have just been doing baby bloomers and outfits but I would love to take on the challenge of making something that I, myself can wear and enjoy! It’s intimidating, but I think it would be so rewarding. Thank you for inspiring us all! From one mama, to another 🤍
How special, Graycen! I love that you set up a space and have such special materials to work with. I also love that you started small and are making space for yourself to create. :)
You continue to inspire me! Sewing has become such a fun way to come back to myself post baby (thanks to you) and is a sweet way to create some heirloom pieces that I hope my daughter can hold onto when she’s a mom herself!
The thing with any hobby or interest, take one step at a time, start small and make something as practice. I taught myself how to sew as a six year old and I remember making some weird things....I made a lime green hood, just a hood on its own, not attached to a coat but it was fun. I used to also sew and knit clothes for my dolls and learned a different way of knitting and how to graduate a hem or line, anyway enjoy it and just practice until you're comfortable to make clothes for yourself to go out in.
You have been an inspiration for me! I have never successfully finished a project so it is very intimidating! I can crochet baby clothing but I really want to start sewing my babies and my own clothing.
Oh wow! I am impressed you crochet baby clothing - that's amazing! I imagine you could definitely start sewing your own clothes as well :) Thanks for sharing!
Loved your video, ty. I have made a few outfits in the past. Wanting to get started again but just a bit intimidated. Going to focus on getting set up.
Hi..just found you, lovely items you sew! I adore sewing for myself, it is my respite, I am a talking therapist and the sewing for me is pure mindfulness and joy. Sewing for there’s would stress me out! Hope to watch more of you. Here in the Uk
The few times I have made clothes for myself it has been stressful and I gave up. I recently made some clothes for my little ones tho and really enjoyed it so now I am getting inspired to try clothes for me again. 😄
Yes I am intimidated to because I like what is theatrical romantic in kibbes system. Things with chiffon, ruffles, asymmetry or something fluttery on the left or right chest/shoulder area, gathers, waist emphasis, 3/4 cuff sleeves or elastic, gathered scoopnecks, lace sleeves, butterfly sleeves etc etc. Stuff that's closer to pro level. I will try something by the end of the year though. 😅 One big thing to me is trying to figure out what needles and threads do what or go with what project.
When my daughter was young, i sewed all of her fun clothes and dresses for Mass,,,but i never have been brave enough to sew for myself. I think that if i could make a small project through it would get me going
i am teaching myself how to sew (I am two months in) and i found this video so soothing and so helpful. Thank you! Can't wait till i get my own space to create in as well.
I just started following you and I totally relate to setting the right mood, oh boy do I relate.... I have a love-hate relationship with sewing for 30 years, but when I take my time and don't rush then I enjoy it.... Excellent quality video production too! You have a gift for sharing!!
Thank you for following along and sharing your thoughts, Madeline! I agree about how much taking your time makes a difference. Mindset really does matter :)
I'm a newbie to sewing as my beautiful soul of a boyfriend brought me a sewing machine for my birthday last year. I'm self teaching myself & getting lots of tips from books & RUclips. Really want to learn to start making small, easy things & then build up from there. I'm so glad I came across your RUclips channel. I hope you can inspire & teach me some basics along the way. I quite find sewing very therapeutic.. 🥰 10.17
I love sewing and I have sewn 3 patched denim skirts, 3 other skirts, 2 trousers, 7 tops, 1 patched quilt. I use simple sewing patterns; rectangular shape with elastic waiste band for the skirts and trousers and T-shirt pattern for the tops. With a sewing machine and simple patterns make sewing own clothing possible.
I make all my summer dresses. and drawstring pants. One Japanese pattern in different fabrics: white linen, dark linen, Liberty of London lawn and one in solid color cotton. I also buy a lot of clothes at the thrift stores and remake them to fit me. I enjoy it a lot and my old Singer machine, black metal with gold is my friend. I also make curtains, pillow covers, toys, quilts. Out of necessity long ago, but out of pleasure and environmental concern now.
I've always been someone that has diy altered a piece of my clothing or have wanted to alter most pieces I find at the store 🙃 so though it's intimidating I'm looking forward to making some of my own! You inspired me to start sewing & I successfully hemmed our curtains last week, moving on to clothes next :) This video was a calming mid day break, thanks for the inspiration!
I love that, Katie! I think you're spot on with doing small alterations and hemming here and there to really get a feel for sewing. Here's to making more and more :)
Love these so much! They’re all beautiful. I’m just beginning my sewing journey (with my mother and grandmothers’ sewing machines) and your videos and tips have been so helpful xx
Thank you, Shelbi! I love hearing that you're starting to sew and how much more special that you're learning with your mother and grandmother's sewing machines. That's so special!
I 0:16 to sew a lot in my younger years. My mother was a very talented seamstress. My senior year of high school I made all my formal dresses after deciding I was going to all the formal dancesthat year. I use to really enjoy sewing. I don't know why, but I have moved away from it. I do still have two sewing machines and a serger. Maybe I will start again.
When I was young and doing the Saturday night at the Discos I would try and make what I was going to wear that night, 1980’s, I can remember asking my Dad for a shirt, I then made a summer jacket(Madonna style) and have continued.😊
Sewing for myself used to be stressful. But after many fails, I enjoy it. Knowing it’s just for me takes off the pressure. If it was for someone else, I’d stress.
Hi! This is my first time watching one of your videos and as of today also sewing. I am good at giving sweing a shot and maybe even in taking a private class to get started. Could you tell me about the long sleeve top you wore at the beginning please? It appears to be a creme and beige top. I would love to find a pattern and make something like it. It's lovely!
Hi! This is the Billie Jacket Pattern (rooneyclothing.com/products/billie-jacket-women-s-pattern?_pos=2&_sid=16e165a0f&_ss=r) Thank you for watching! I am so happy to hear you are pursuing sewing and a private class is a wonderful idea!
It's was intimidating at first but after the first step it gets easier and I get very excited to see the outcome. I remember when I didn't know how to get my machine to work and the thread kept coming out. Lol 😆
So glad I stumbled across your channel! I just made my second piece of clothing that is actually good enough to wear and I’m so proud. 😅 I hope to make a linen set like yours someday. ❤️
I find homemaking intimidating lol, even planning and cooking meals, that sewing seems like an added intimidation/stress for me. I would love to see them as relaxing and creative outlets, especially since I’ve had disappointing shopping trips/online shopping with things not fitting the way I hope them to be (I’m also pregnant) and good quality clothes are expensive!
Oh this video was so relaxing and made me miss it so. Sewing use to be a relaxing time for me before. Then 2020 happened and everyone wanted masks and my machine broke (it was fairly old and I needed a new one anyway) but, I still haven't been able to get a new one 😕 I've talked about it and want so bad to create clothing for my kids because they love to match but my oldest is too far ahead for them to have the same dresses now. I really need a new sewing machine so I can begin for them and for myself. I am having an overwhelming time knowing where to start though. I haven't bought a sewing machine since my freshman year in high school lol so I guess you could say it's a bit much now. But I'll get there again 🥰
I get very frustrated getting the correct fit. It is a lot of time and money to work out the alterations to make. Thank you for sharing your spring wardrobe. X
Beautiful, Courtney. Thanks for the inspiration and new ideas to create more! I have never sewed my own clothing although I’ve done some alterations and have crocheted and knitted small things before. Would love to create a piece of clothing to wear :)
I am at least 4th generation seamstress, and I raised a 5th generation seamstresses and a tailor. I sew clothes, cosplay, and household items. I actually have done everything but large quilts. Sewing is a passion of mine.
I’ve been intimidated by sewing but have always had a big interest in it. I made my own dress in tje 7th grade and a few things since then including a dress for my daughter. I’d love to be able to create me own clothing and just be more sustainable
Completely intimidating. 😅 I think it also has to do with not knowing how to troubleshoot machine problems as I have only used hand-me-downs. Thanks for sharing.... might give it another try!
Very Nice. I'm getting ready to make a waistcoat. I have the fabric but haven't decided on the method. I like to put in Kiki's Delivery Service when it's time to sew. Good vibes. I have to put it on English dub since I will mainly be listening to it and not watching it. I rarely make clothes but I do a lot of altering.
Did you make the plaid jacket with the buttons that you have on in the beginning of the video? I would absolutely love the pattern for this please! Thank you so much :)
I did! This is the Billie Jacket in the crop version - rooneyclothing.com/products/billie-jacket-women-s-pattern?_pos=2&_sid=e0e867071&_ss=r The fabric is from Joann's and the full tutorial is here: ruclips.net/video/nDYmbjFrEhE/видео.html
Hi Rooney, I started sewing for my self last year and so far I've learned a lot but I still have problems in cutting. Looking at you I can see we have the same table (IKEA?) but yours has something like a cutting mat surface on it. Is it something you added or is store bought like this. Your help will mean a lot for me. Thanks for sharing. Maria from Italy
So intimidating! I am also petite with a very pear shaped body and I can only imagine how hard it would be to find a pattern to fit me. I'm sort of scared to invest the time into something that might not fit.
Now that I’m in the habit of forcing myself to make a toile before cutting into my best fabrics, my sewing is a lot less daunting. The main thing holding me back these days is lack of space. I used to have a dedicated craft room to myself but as the kids came I moved from a whole room to one half of the guest room, to now utilising just the dining table; which I have to clear for 3 meals a day!
I'd love to hear, are you intimidated to sew your own clothes or is sewing a restful practice for you?
Im a bit scared of ruining the fabric 😅
I'm a beginner and learning.. So I'd say it's a mix of both haha.. Love the dress you made!!

Yes!! It relaxes me too!! I love it.
I hope to be able to say that one day

I made a simple skirt for my daughter and she loves it. 🥰
I read in a couple of places that sewing is actually very therapeutic and helps with aging. It’s great for the nervous system and very relaxing. Keep up with the good work girl!🤍
What a helpful piece of information! I can totally see the effects of it helping my nervous system and being relaxing, personally :)
I have started sewing my own wardrobe for about a year now and before that I just did small alterations. One thing that makes it less intimidating is that you can always just use your seam ripper and start again and to always be gentle and patient 🥰
Yes!! This is the perspective that changes everything - seam rippers are our friends :)

I love sewing on rainy/snowy days. There nothing like it for comforting me at home
I totally agree! It's so comforting :)

What a great skill to learn when you were young!! I am glad that this video came at the right time. I bet when you begin again, it may be like riding a bike. I love that you'll be able to share your own style too!
It is therapy for me! I love making something with my hands and expressing my creativity through the clothes I make.
I love sewing, knitting and crocheting for myself. Especially handsewing: it's calming and relaxing for me.
Love hearing that! It is so relaxing :)
I live sewing my spring wardrobe. It's so relaxing. I've made 4 pairs of Jersey lounge pants, four jersey shorts and tank tops, a skirt, a nightgown, a sports bra, and some work out shorts! Phew!
Ok this is motivating me to start sewing again. Sewing for myself is intimidating for me but not too the point where I won’t
I'm so glad to hear it was motivating for you! Enjoy the sewing process :)
I've been sewn for myself and my family for years. I enjoy the process and creating favorite items for my wardrobe. Love your channel.

I just got a sewing machine from a family member and I will start to get into sewing more I first need to get needles and thread and fabric
I’ve only made clothes for my babies thus far, because making clothes for myself definitely feels more intimidating. I think it’s because I use more fabric when making my own clothes, so I don’t want to mess up anything!
I totally get that, Abigail! I bet you'd be pleasantly surprised at how sewing for babies can translate well to sewing for adults too :)
Sewing for myself was scary at the beguining but nowdays is just something very relaxing and a greath pleasure.
I love hearing this, Rita!
I luv to sew. I make peasant tops for myself. Beautiful fabrics. I also sew 6 inch lace on the mid sleeves. It makes me feel special.
It is intimidating but I love it. The fit , colours and style I love.

You continue to inspire me! Sewing has become such a fun way to come back to myself post baby (thanks to you) and is a sweet way to create some heirloom pieces that I hope my daughter can hold onto when she’s a mom herself!
I always love seeing what you make, Lilianne! And I love hearing how special that time has been for you post-baby :)
Love how calming this video was! Your editing style is as beautiful as your pieces💖
This is so thoughtful of you to say! Thank you :)
Totally agree about setting the tone before I start sewing
Glad to hear that! I really can see a difference when I do this :)

It's a cool outfit for my hot flashes so thanks 😊

Its worth the try :)
Loved your video, ty. I have made a few outfits in the past. Wanting to get started again but just a bit intimidated. Going to focus on getting set up.

Watching this now!! Almost a year lady! Hoping to live more of a minimalist life
Love hearing that! Thanks for watching :)
I love sewing my clothes!
Just found you, i love the first jacket you're wearing.
Oh, thank you!!
You are such an inspiration! I find sewing so intimidating but a skill that I would love to learn one day :)
Oh thank you! I think having the desire to learn is a huge step. You'll be able to create beautiful things!
That's so special!
i loooove to make my clothes. I started when i was 14yo (now 33) 😊✨
Oh wow! I love hearing that. I bet you could teach us all a thing or two 😉
I 0:16 to sew a lot in my younger years. My mother was a very talented seamstress. My senior year of high school I made all my formal dresses after deciding I was going to all the formal dancesthat year. I use to really enjoy sewing. I don't know why, but I have moved away from it. I do still have two sewing machines and a serger. Maybe I will start again.
Love the jeans tip!
hey thanks, Nathan!
When I was young and doing the Saturday night at the Discos I would try and make what I was going to wear that night, 1980’s, I can remember asking my Dad for a shirt, I then made a summer jacket(Madonna style) and have continued.😊
How fun is that!! Thank you for sharing, Kate :)
Hello,
Came across your channel and loved it. Subscribed 5 mins in 🙂. I enjoy sewing for myself, because I find it relaxing and peaceful.
Sewing for myself used to be stressful. But after many fails, I enjoy it. Knowing it’s just for me takes off the pressure. If it was for someone else, I’d stress.
I agreee, I think sewing should be stress and pressure-free! :)
I loved sewing as far back as I can remember. Lovely channel. I like your patterns. Can’t wait to try one
Hi! This is the Billie Jacket Pattern (rooneyclothing.com/products/billie-jacket-women-s-pattern?_pos=2&_sid=16e165a0f&_ss=r)
Thank you for watching! I am so happy to hear you are pursuing sewing and a private class is a wonderful idea!
You are kind, thank you!
It's was intimidating at first but after the first step it gets easier and I get very excited to see the outcome. I remember when I didn't know how to get my machine to work and the thread kept coming out.
Lol 😆
All very real things!! I agree, it takes time but its so worth it :)
I’m still at the point where my thread keeps coming out 😂😅
So glad I stumbled across your channel! I just made my second piece of clothing that is actually good enough to wear and I’m so proud. 😅 I hope to make a linen set like yours someday. ❤️
Isn't that the best feeling?! Knowing you made something yourself is powerful :) Proud of you, Aisha!
I find sewing for myself is restful respite. Therapeutic.

I love sewing. I just made a dress to wear for a wedding.
It’s so cool to run into a fellow Tulsa,ok RUclipsr !! Wishing you much success and great videos!
I love hearing that, Charlene! Thanks for sharing :)
I love that blue!
Loving your channel
I am happy you are here!
I am at least 4th generation seamstress, and I raised a 5th generation seamstresses and a tailor. I sew clothes, cosplay, and household items. I actually have done everything but large quilts. Sewing is a passion of mine.
Very intimidating
love it so relaxing, I think im going to be taking out my sewing machine ! thank you so sharing..
I’ve been intimidated by sewing but have always had a big interest in it. I made my own dress in tje 7th grade and a few things since then including a dress for my daughter. I’d love to be able to create me own clothing and just be more sustainable

wow so ,cool 🧁🍬🍫🍭🍨🍧
Completely intimidating. 😅 I think it also has to do with not knowing how to troubleshoot machine problems as I have only used hand-me-downs. Thanks for sharing.... might give it another try!
Your style of filming is exceptional❤
Wonderful Fabrik, nice color and Angles Like clothes ♥️thanks form the Video 🙋🏼♀️
thank you so much, Anita!
I love it. Been doing it for a long while.
im all up for learning though
That's the spirit :)
I subscribed, you are talented.
Thank you, Susan! You are kind.
Did you make the plaid jacket with the buttons that you have on in the beginning of the video? I would absolutely love the pattern for this please! Thank you so much :)
I did! This is the Billie Jacket in the crop version - rooneyclothing.com/products/billie-jacket-women-s-pattern?_pos=2&_sid=e0e867071&_ss=r
The fabric is from Joann's and the full tutorial is here: ruclips.net/video/nDYmbjFrEhE/видео.html
Hi Rooney,
I started sewing for my self last year and so far I've learned a lot but I still have problems in cutting. Looking at you I can see we have the same table (IKEA?) but yours has something like a cutting mat surface on it. Is it something you added or is store bought like this.
Your help will mean a lot for me.
Thanks for sharing.
