Another hint for sewing buttons on sheer or delicate fabrics - pick a 2nd button, flat, preferably clear or unobtrusive in color and sew it to the inside, directly behind the right side button. Sew them together, so they anchor each other. This provides support, and will keep the right side button from straining or pulling on the fabric, as it's attached to an inner button. This is also a good idea for coat/sweater buttons, which tend to be heavier.

One of the benefits of revising thrift garments is that it helps to understand how they are made. I've been doing it for a long time (I'm kind of old) and find it helps me in drafting and designing for myself. Fun changes and that final dress is just perfect.

This is how I’ve taught myself how to hand sew and alter my stuff. I really study(?) how the piece was put together while I’m taking it apart… Thrifting has also really given me a keen eye for higher quality fabric and workmanship too. Ya know? I hope to get a machine soon, but for now, this works.

I started sewing on a machine when I was 9 years old, and began making lots of my own clothes. I can even remember making a long sleeve, button up shirt with collar, then the next summer, making it sleeveless, with a V neck and wearing it backwards. I'm going on a cruise in October and have a stack of thrifted pieces that will be converted. Linen elastic waist pants that are way too big will be come draw string shorts, AND a drawstring skirt (from 1 pair of pants). A little girl maxi dress in a print I LOVE, but has a small bodice, will be cut under the bodice to release all the gathers. Then I'm making a yoke and shoulder ties, to make it a shorter baby doll type dress. So many possibilities. I like the overall idea. I have 2 white cotton nightgown that I love, that I think I want to make into more of a one piece romper for sleep and lounging. I can take tips from your project.

It is SOOO nice to see someone who is willing to make alterations and minor repairs to otherwise great garments! I have known too many women who would actually throw away a perfectly good, maybe almost new, top because a button came off. More money than brains, I guess.
But I also had a young gal come into the fabric store where I worked; she brought in a very cute little knit top she had purchased on clearance (really cheap!) because she wasn't fond of the plain buttons. We found some really pretty buttons (cost more than the sale price of the blouse) that totally changed and dressed up the look of the top. She was a very happy camper when she left!

For the brown dress with the hole and the lining problem, it could be great if you cut the lining at the knee level. Since the dress is see through, it can look great. You can try before cutting it :)

I find adjusting a whole pattern a little hard and don’t sew that much right now. My shoulders are still a medium but my bust and belly are a large. Because of this I have to choose carefully between loser medium and large sized clothing. I can follow your tip to make a back tuck and draw tops and dresses in a little near the waist for a more flattering fit. Really a great video!

This was super helpful, thanks!! I've been altering thrifted clothes for a while with not much knowledge and there were so many little things that you did that will help me get better results next time. Especially taking those pants in to become high waisted... definitely have had major butt issues from taking pants in at the back!! Haha

Love this video. The blouse with the avocado buttons might have looked better with peach/ochre colour buttons to match the flower on it.

The dress is brilliant! I'd love to find one like that! The overalls are so cute, and that was a perfect solution! I love
taking in my pants like that, too. Those pink checked ones are so cute! Even the tiny fixes you did to the dresses
made so much difference! I am truly inspired! Thanks! I can't wait to see what you do next!

I like your button choice. Since I hate loosing buttons, I use two separate threads when sewing on buttons. Not always, yet often, I reinforce the buttons with the 2nd thread on any new, or new to me, pieces, especially when the buttons are not standard everyday buttons. ☮️💞

Thanks! I occasionally do that on fabrics and threads that are more prone to losing buttons or pulling apart. It's a good little trick!
