The daughter in the family who’s relegated to being “good at helping out”The sacrifices they make when they had dreams and wanted a love of their own, too. The song is beautiful, exciting when it gets to the chorus and melancholy when it returns to verse. Powerful.

Fast Car is on the Rolling Stones list of 500 greatest songs of all time. For anyone to claim she wasn't recognized before this cover takes away what she achieved then. All this cover did was introduce it to a new generation and make her more money. She was an icon long before today.

      That part may or may not be true. Not to take anything away from either artists but do some light research and will find the music industry was not so receptive to Tracy Chapman back then even with the song winning Grammies. It is not a surprise the song did much better in the UK than the US. Some equate it to misogyny in the music which still exist and some equate it also so racism in the music industry which still exists and if I am not mistaken is she was out as a queer woman which back then was a huge no no and she may have paid for the price for that because though the song was well written, she may have hit the mother load of no nos. Black/woman/queer. Had it been written and song by a white straight male it may have been marketed totally different in the US and here we are today. Again, this is no referendum on either artists but it's ok to have the difficult conversations and people should not feel any ill will for feeling uncomfortable about it.

      @imhereforitall9218 8 месяцев назад +1

      Again, as successful as the song was/is it was not heavily marketed in the US by the music industry. Those are the facts. It's not just that song the entire album had gems that would rival anyone's music today but one would never know it because the album was "never" marketed. It was way more popular in the UK which is where she truly found her success. She's truly a treasure. Too bad it took 30 plus years for the rest of the world to catch up. She probably would did want to be at the Grammy because all it is a bunch of bs and no real people. Just a lot of virtue signalling. They probably wore her down and she finally relented. Like I was minding y own business living my quiet life and you all want me to do what? ha. @@TituzzzD

    Tracy Chapman proves you only have to write one iconic song ever. It’s a song that will live for a thousand years.
    In 1988, it was a 3 woman race for who would be the next big thing. Tracy had Fast Car, Edie Brickell & New Bohemians had What I Am, and Natalie Merchant’s 10,000 Maniacs had Like the Weather. 1988 was a HUGE year for female acts. Edie got married to Paul Simon, what happened to Tracy was a mystery, and Natalie Merchant went on to at least 5 more Top 10 hits.
    And of all those great artists from 1988, Fast Car is the song that endured. What a year.
