1:25 "One of the most popular songs in the country..." This song was one of the most popular songs in the world back then. It played non-stop on the radio in my country Brazil and still plays a lot.
Great performance, and the lyrics to this song resonate across all generations and people of different backgrounds. That’s why it was beloved in the 80s, and why it’s made such a resurgence now.
When Luke Combs covered that song I wasn't expecting to like it but I loved it. And I still remember when that song came out in the 80s. It gave me goose bumps then as it does now. It's a wonderful song!
I absolutely balled Megyn!!! Love both of these artists, especially Tracy and their music aside.. it was the little glances and smiles at each other that was priceless for me! Those dimples, that smile ... reminds me of more peaceful and beautiful times. There is hope!!!
Until I watched this performance on the awards show and then watched it again on You Tube and listened to the lyrics, I had forgotten how beautiful it is. It made me cry. I used to sing this song when it first became popular in the 1980s but honestly never understood the true meaning of the song. I think everyone can read something into this song and relate to the beautiful words.
Right before you said, "It's almost church-like"....I thought to myself....it is like church but how much better is it to worship our loving God and feel his presence!
Her popping out of hiding for this was a GIFT to us all but for us die-hard fans, this made our year!!!! ❤❤❤❤ i cried. Can't stop rewatching Tracy, legend!! ❤
She sanged at Wembly stadium in London for Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday. She had already sanged "Revolution" and because Stevie Wonder who was the surprise guest they asked her to come back and sing another song and she was unprepared and she decided on "Fast Car" and sanged it in front of 60k people and that performance shot her to stardom which may explain why she was way more popular in the UK.
I read somewhere that she shocked the Grammy’s producers when she wanted to sing her song live and not use a track. Yes, this is what diversity and respect looks like. Both equally respected each other. The song was easy to learn the words. You didn’t have to stop the cassette after each verse to write the words down. People born in the 70s will know what I mean.
Seeing Tracy finally get the response and respect she so longingly deserved as an artist for that beautiful piece of music after all these years on that stage then having it shoot to #1 on iTunes was absolutely GLORIOUS..You want true organically occuring DEI? (I hate this term) take a GOOD LOOK...THIS IS HOW IT IS DONE!! What a gratifying moment to watch unfold!
I love that this great song has been revived and she is getting the recognition she deserves as an artist. I hope people discover how great she is. Truly a special performance.
I didn’t like that song when it was originally popular, but now after so many years, I really find it very moving and important. My younger self couldn’t appreciate the story, but now I see it clearly as I watch my own kids grow up and go out into the world.
Not going to lie, I clicked on here wondering how @meghynkelly was going to find a way to spin this into something negative and (for the most part), both ladies did a fantastic job of seeing this for exactly what it was…a beautiful performance that UNITED us all. Whatever issues that arose prior was put to rest after the first note of this duet and to see people come together on anything is huge! THE WORLD NEEDS MORE OF THIS..and guess what…it turns out UNITY also generates clicks (as you can see😉)!! I am also hopeful that she will continue to share her talent and start performing more. I'm a 64 year old male who cried my eyes out when viewing that performance because it not only was a great collaboration, but it also broke a lot of barriers. Best performance the Grammys have had in years.
Tracy Chapman is a star who came onto her own with her music and talent.
It was the best part of the night, and the best song sung. They sounded beautiful together.
Great performance, and the lyrics to this song resonate across all generations and people of different backgrounds. That’s why it was beloved in the 80s, and why it’s made such a resurgence now.
Tracy won a Grammy for “Best Pop Vocal Performance” for ‘Fast Car’!
I’d say it was a pretty big hit.
Sage Steele what a beautiful way to sum it up. I loved their duet. And yes he looked like he was honored to be singing with her. It was awesome.
Definitely gives me chills and tears. Just beautiful!
When Luke Combs covered that song I wasn't expecting to like it but I loved it. And I still remember when that song came out in the 80s. It gave me goose bumps then as it does now. It's a wonderful song!
I remember hearing Tracy Chapman on the radio and I needed to buy her album. I was surprised to see her picture on the cover. Of course I bought it!
I absolutely balled Megyn!!! Love both of these artists, especially Tracy and their music aside.. it was the little glances and smiles at each other that was priceless for me! Those dimples, that smile ... reminds me of more peaceful and beautiful times. There is hope!!!
Yes TRACY N LUKE WERE THE BEST . TRACY'S SMILE WAS JUS LIT SHE GAVE ME CHILLS I WAS CRYING N HAPPY. FULL OF EMOTIONS 😅😢😊❤❤
What a perfect duet of a classic!
No computers, no drum machine, no lasers, explosions, dancers, etc. Just two gifted musicians and a beautiful song.
brings tears
They did a great job job. I never heard of this song before it’s beautiful
It was big in South Africa as well when Tracy’s came out way back. I love their collaboration and would download it immediately!
Amazing duet.........this song transports me back to 1988.......a special year in my life.......
Tracy and Luke are both so humble
Love the two of you together. Beautiful ladies inside and out
It was so beautiful. I can’t get enough of it!
If Tracy owns the publishing rights she is also making beaucoup bucks with its reintroduction to a new audiences.
She does and Yesss she does

I’m glad for her!
My incarcerated students didn’t believe me when I told them Dolly Pardon wrote I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU! Whitney Houston made it famous. 🙏🏽🇺🇸🥰
I love that this great song has been revived and she is getting the recognition she deserves as an artist. I hope people discover how great she is. Truly a special performance.
Good for them. Sticking it to the haters of human togetherness..❤
I didn’t like that song when it was originally popular, but now after so many years, I really find it very moving and important. My younger self couldn’t appreciate the story, but now I see it clearly as I watch my own kids grow up and go out into the world.
Tracy defended him when the lunatics came after him.
Now before ppl jump down my throat for saying what I’m about to say, I’m Canadian 🇨🇦 and have no dog in this race but your reputation precedes you around the globe…and this is the most admirable light I have EVER seen Meghyn Kelly..Please continue down this path for 2024 (..throwing shade is beneath you), but this humane sincere side looks so good on you. Respect Meghyn!!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Fast Car is my favourite since being 16 in '87 and this song playing over the PA system at the grocery store where I used to work.
Wow! Over the PA system at the grocery store? I am so jealous. I had to take my sony walkman cassette player with me to work at the fast food joint where I worked and listened to it in my car on break while I smoked a dooby.
@@imhereforitall9218 Those were the days 😅
I agree! That was an important intersectional moment! It’s been a long time… we needed this moment. We Are the World in Netflix will remind us and our children!
I never ONCE heard someone mention “white privilege” when Luke Comb’s cover came out. You’re exaggerating.
Here it is Megyn plain & simple...Tracy & Luke gave us a GIFT! Enjoy the gift...!
Uhh...Whitney Houston ( black woman ) covered dolly Parton ( white woman ) I will always love you! And Whitney brought it to top of charts number 1 spot. Yup...white privilege!
U realise no " leftist" is watching this right..no need to give explanation!
Great points and observations.
I strongly disagree with their political take. I too was excited that Tracy Chapman broke a barrier, being the first black person (man or woman) to have a number one Country Hit. I am also hopeful that she will continue to share her talent and start performing more. I'm a 64 year old male who cried my eyes out when viewing that performance because it not only was a great collaboration, but it also broke a lot of barriers. Seeing the audience all on their feet at the end of the performance proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that music unites us and moves us.
What barriers did it break?
Luke and Tracy's voice complimented each other I would love to hear them sing other songs together.
I could listen to this over and over!
That performance was so beautiful, I teared up a little too!
It's so beautiful to see people trying to inflict peace,,, respect and love to each other which is now rare in this today's society...
Fast Car is one of the greatest songs ever written
That little clip of Tracy Chapman and Luke was pore raising! Loved it!
You nailed it ladies, diversity brought together by good music. This is the America that I luv.~
Lovely to hear about Megyn rocking out at a Green Day show! Great conversation about the power of music. 🎶 ❤
