He’s a smart man, an amazing musician and generally one of the most talented people walking on this earth. It’s okay to have an ego and his ego seems pretty mild to me. He’s no Axl Rose. He’s a compulsive intellectual. A lot of people can’t take it and don’t have the propensity to understand it. It doesn’t release him from bad decisions but I sympathize. I understand the chaos and loneliness of having that mind. He’s a poet and musical architect and I still respect him and love his music.

@@cbmlgia Yeah, I guess so. He's just annoying. He reminds of some people I know that's all. Lol. You guys probably know some like this. The worst ones are the ones that achieve some kind of success. They become more annoying. Lol.
It seems that people are confusing confidence with arrogance. John Mayer knows how skilled he is as a musician and makes jokes around that. People now like to knock others down when they show confidence in themselves out of what seems to be jealousy or some other instinctive response. It is a huge shame that you cannot be honest about certain things without someone getting offended and creating a hate train
I know that's the old comment, but also John is an intellectual and self aware creature, whereas a lot of people are not. Also he has a broader view and understanding of the music industry.
@GW76 M False claim, through the years I saw many interviews with him and can't agree with you. In his twenties, especially at the early stage, yes, but he was just a kid. He's been discussing this subject many times.
@GW76 M Can't agree again, he is one of the most versatile guitarist I've seen, through all these years I'm still finding new things that amazes me, and what is important, he's not repeating himself, he's still trying to discover a new ways and approaches (which I cannot say about lot of artists, even the top one, and those I admire the most).
Shedding the Ego is tough even for a nobody. I cant imagine being a thinking dude like JM with all that popularity to go along with it. Good luck brother - you are on the right path
+Maddox Bromley " Shedding the Ego is tough even for a nobody. I cant imagine being a thinking dude like JM with all that popularity to go along with it. Good luck brother - you are on the right path" You said Brother. Are you allegedly arrogant as well? I mean, people say John is but I don't see how he is different than any other musician.
John Mayer is so talented and intelligent. I love when an artist can stand back and take a good look at themselves... anyone for that matter. I’ll always be listening to his music.
This guy is a major talent. One of the best writers I've ever come across. I used to think Daryl Scott was the greatest, until I found this dude. He had literally taken music and dissected it and turned it into an equation and created the answer. if he seems cocky it's because he has every reason to be. Listen to the song "Assassin"... actually the whole album
Despite everything he's saying, I worked in Higher Education for about a decade: Berklee, MIT, Harvard. I am a Berklee alumni and Harvard graduate. I didn't even know 17 year old John Meyer played guitar. I just know that he was the hardest working student of anything I've ever seen. Never saw him screwing around as any college student should. You had to know, this kid was going to be successful at whatever he wanted to do.
Exactly man. Everyone in this comment section is freaking out about his supposedly huge ego, while I'm just seeing a pretty level headed guy, who is also quite wise as well. I think most of us enjoy our ego being stroked, but if you hide it and never mention it and no one ever notices this, you are considered to not be egotistical. However, if you are anything like John and you expose parts of yourself that aren't that great, and aknowledge the existence of certain things within yourself that are maybe not as noble, everyone is super fast to put you down. Same with acknowledging your talents - yes it's great to be super humble and what not, but sometimes looking at yourself in an objective manner like John does is even better, because it shows a certain level of self-awareness he has developed, to be able to look at himself from the side and come to an objective realization, that ''yes, I am talented''. Where acting humble is not really that hard, most people can do it whether their behavior is actually genuine or not. I personally put an objective assesment that might not be convenient for everyone above a more convenient but subjective one.
He strikes me as the type who’s just hyper-self aware, it drives you kinda crazy sometimes and people tend to mistake it for ego when you’re stressed out and totally exhausted from all of the self critical internal dialogue.
exactly... people bein' jealous because John is a highly evolved human being with a lot of dignity... I'd be honored if some John Mayer fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of his early masterpieces CLARITY and QUIET on my YT channel in tribute to the boss. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thanks and peace out.
@Dude Sweet I see that everyone has insecurities whether it's having big feet or a dark past and that's fine so not having insecurities is hard to acquire...as impossible.
@Dude Sweet did you listen to his first 3 albums? You may not have connected with them personally but I think calling them inauthentic is a little presumptuous, that is, unless you know him personally.
"I think it's terribly dangerous for an artist to fulfill other people's expectations. I think they generally produce their worst work when they do that" -David Bowie
@Yanni Xifaras Fair enough. I'm not saying Mayer hasn't made progress, just that he doesn't appear to be fully recovered and the way he describes his current behaviour also suggests he's not fully recovered. He has realised he has a problem which is the first step so that's good, but he has a long way to go. I don't blame him either, he was shot into fame and success quite young and that could go to anyone's head.
He’s growing up. Mad respect. “I want to run thru the halls of my high school, I was to scream at the top of my lungs!” Great musician, song writing and delivery. Don’t let the disgusting media ruin you.... glad you found peace in Montana.
Somewhat of a polarizing figure but whether a beloved personality or not, John Mayer still stands as one of the greatest artists of the current generation. Can't wait to hear his next project
From these interviews I feel like what John's always wanted to do is become really popular, but without having to simplify and downgrade his art, or do that at the smallest scale possible. He found that you can't do it. As much as you want to, you can't force the general public to think something is good enough even though he and his fans clearly think it's more than good enough. It just can't be done and that destroys him. His younger self thought it could be done and he couldn't be stopped, but I feel like he's now found peace with it. If you ask me John has already achieved legend status. Can't wait for what comes next; it's going to be clearer and more pronounced John than ever before.
Just a brilliant piece of art that album is. He's a incredible musician and I'm grateful to be of age to witness and comprehend his artistry in real time...
Kazbur eric clapton will say anything to stay relevant son! i consider clapton great, his day has come and gone thou. enter the age of lukewarm musicians and the people who don't know any better
I don't know what vendetta you have against John Mayer but to say he's simply a popular artists and not a skilled musician is bs. What's your argument against my claim
He's honest... Everyone in their nature wants to be famous and he's addressed it and lived it. And he's trying to get to another part of his life. Every celebrity is like this. Some just more than others.
I think it means that in the modern society we base our self-worth on the opinion of others and it's much more easier to do that when we have apps like twitter where people can follow you and "like" what you say, therefore creating a false sense of self-esteem. While in the past we looked in the mirror to validate ourself. or something like that idunno
John is perhaps one of the best adjusted musicians that are well known out there. His level of talent is miles beyond most and at the top of the game. He deserves to enjoy his life as he wants it. He's earned it.
I still feel like John hasn't FULLY recovered from being an "ego addict." And the truth be told, people with big egos are just using it as a front to protect a quite fragile, sometimes insecure being. But I'm glad he's on a his journey of growing up...creative people are a sensitive lot anyhow; so the way he's so affected by everything is really quite natural.
He is displaying all the signs of somebody who actually is incredibly self doubting, hence his drive to not be what he thinks he is. No matter how much success he has, he will always doubt himself This is the heart of his "issues" Unfortunately, it has made alot of people dislike him, which feeds his deepest problem He could be wired this way, or have had experiences as a kid that shaped this
Society: Be more confident in yourself! Be more happy in who you are and what you do! Society: omh you think so highly of yourself, you have such an ego.

Mayer is the James Taylor of our times. Dude can write great songs, plays the guitar like a monster! Glad he’s in this world! Keep ‘em coming John Mayer !
God i love him. Don't turn away just because you think he is annoying. Listen to his message. He knows he is good, yes, but if he didn't know, then he would have never been able to share his music with all of us. Try to interpret this message the way he means and you'll get it ok. Fame does something to people, and he realized that now.
As a musician, that comment about social media and performing self consciously really hit close to home... RUclips comments, twitter feedback... I did a video for a singer a couple of years back on an online thing that got panned, and more than did well but the feedback is so addictive and destructive. This was helpful.
John is an artist and a hard worker. These both things make him naturally struggle between balance and imbalance in self-love matters, because he puts almost all his energy in his art. I don’t know anyone who is either of those things that does not have that struggle with themselves. He has a great impact on me musically and I feel thankful to him for that.
I understand this dude. I had a similar thing going in school. I kinda neglected my friends at this period but when I reached my "goal" I decided to go back to the old me. Was a nice trip.
How pleasing it is to see an artist with so much talent and wisdom be so humble and content. His music is incredible. Continuum was one of a kind, and the release of Born and Raised and Paradise Valley, portrayed this incredible versatility and feeling that very very few artists possess. But he doesn't care if you think that. For him, It's purely about the music, and enjoying what he does.
Juan Gonzalez i personally believe ego is a very important thing for sucessfull people. provides confidence, motivation, determination to carry on etc.... but now i think his ego is focused just on music and we can hear the difference. and about the whole taylor paper doll thing is just bs. he didnt write that song about her nor did she deserve a song from him. although i like them both. just country taylor tho. not this pop taylor.
Juan Gonzalez I did watch the interview. I wasn't really commenting on any of those issues raised. Purely just my thoughts on his transition through his career.
Juan Gonzalez did YOU watch the interview? He basically said he doesn't care if people don't like his new music anymore. It's all about musicality from this point and he shows that. Paradise Valley wasnt #1 when it released and he said he didn't care anymore. His at a point where he just makes music because he can and I'm not complaining
The amount this man has changed, progressed, GROWN just in the last 7 years is amazing. He no longer has to *talk* about the fact that he's a "recovered ego addict" because it's so apparent when you hear him speak in interviews that he has gotten past all of that. He has let go of the need for approval as well as the need for everyone to think he's funny and it's a fantastic look on him.
A self-aware narcissist. They say there is no "cure" for narcissism (or "narcissistic personality disorder", but I don't know if Mayer is diagnosed), but it sure is good that Mayer is aware of his destructive patterns and that he's trying to do better, to not hurt people, and manage his condition. Great musician - I wish him peace and a calm, content life.
He is an extremely intelligent introverted soul, who is comfortable with himself. It's just that most of the people really don't understand him. He is a legend and I have a great amount of respect for him.🙏🏼❤️😁
I feel like this interview kinda got me a little more into John Mayer's head, and now I can understand why he's acted a certain way in the past and made certain decisions. I can respect him. It's really weird to see how different people handle success and fame.
Mike Skriloff I was wanting to hear a little bit about the new album and some other subjects but the guy couldn't help but do the same exact interview and ask the same questions everyone else has asked over the past few years
Josh P mscentrum04 Sadly.....this man is LONELY, and lacks even a modicum of self esteem. He needs to cease talking about himself. Both the interviewer and the subject of the interview here---seem shallow, and this interview or "session," or whatever it is? Will seem dated, self centered and pitiful, even a month from now. Who cares what Mayer is wearing, or how many awards he gets,or doesn't get, or who foolishly idolizes his ilk?I wish him well.
"u get to the other side.. where you speak so much of your truth, even you learn from it." Ive experienced times in that place & I love it. Thanks for articulating it so well
1. I love that phrase "You abuse the ability to express yourself." That says so much. I like that a lot. .. 2. Are they truly self-aware? I think they're moreso hyper-aware; which is in direct opposition of self-awareness. ... 3. Never been a huge fan of John Mayer. Don't dislike him, just never got the hype, and I know very little about the scandals or negative image. But, I truly enjoyed this interview.
That's a fair question. Honestly, No. I don't know many of his songs, just Wonderland. Just never been drawn to him. But, ya know what, I will now, just for you. I'll check out some of his stuff and let you know what I think. Fair?
***** That's really awesome of you, you know that? I think he's a weird person to get into when you hear him speak before you hear him sing. I had a similar experience where I only knew Wonderland and his Free Fallin' cover, loved that, then heard about the TS drama and everything that followed that and was so majorly turned off by that, that for a long time, I didn't give his other music a shot. I'd love to hear what you listened to and how you liked it.
+Asi Kla Hey, Asi. So, I checked out a bunch of John Mayer's music. As it turns out, I know a lot of his stuff, just didn't know it was him. What I heard was cool, I'm just not really drawn to it. Actually, I do find that a little weird. It seems like I would really like his stuff, because I really like that style. That introspective, observant storytelling by a guy whose guitar feels like it's an extension of his existence in the world, sending musical messages across soul waves in the atmosphere. I love that stuff. It's my driving down the coast and resting on the beach at sunset kinda music. I know "Gravity" and like that lot. I did really like "Clarity" also. Just a coincidence that those two song titles rhyme. :) In any case, I'm glad I gave him a chance. Maybe I'll listen again sometime when I'm not fast tracking through them. Thanks anyway for challenging me. I like being challenged and I love finding new music. This was fun. Love Light
Hey Light. Thank you for getting back at me, I was eagerly waiting for your opinion. I definitely know what you mean. I think his music is best enjoyed when it sort of just "comes to you". For example I recently had the "Born & Raised" album on while I was sorting through stuff at home and I felt connected to every song and went on this kind of journey with it. So lovely. By the way, this was most definitely the sweetest thing I read all week and I've never heard a better description of his musical personality then "That introspective, observant storytelling by a guy whose guitar feels like it's an extension of his existence in the world, sending musical messages across soul waves in the atmosphere.". You defintiely get it. Thank you so much for that! Have you heard of a guy named "Paolo Nutini"? He's another singer/songwriter and if you liked John's style, he might be worth a shot too. Much love, Katje.
john has a huge ego, but i think it’s the fact that people expect him to not have one that makes him look like a bad person. he’s hot, tall, has great humour, and is one of the best guitar players in the world…. how can he NOT have an ego? I mean come on.
As a DeadHead who logged 10 years and 123 Grateful Dead concerts from 1985- 1195 (RIP Jerry), I was skeptical when Mayer began touring with Dead & Co, but I enjoy his guitar playing. John is "easy on the eyes" when seen live. HOWEVER, I have a tough time watching his intense facial expressions as he shred the guitar on the jumbo screen at shows. I'm grateful to Mayer for turning a new generation of younger, free spirited individuals on to the DeadHead touring tribe. The younger generation of Dead & Co fans assimilated fast and enhanced Shakedown Street parking lot vending scene, reminiscence of the Jerry Garcia era! Very cool, kind, intelligent and fun folks make up the Grateful Dead sub culture community. We aren't, for the most part, even interested of what Jerry called "the Lame America". DeadHeads epitomize the American Hippie subculture, we relish our free spirit, LOVE ROCK AND ROLL, are adventure lovers, enjoy travel and are having fun touring to see the Dead & Co shows each concert season. Thanks to Mayer and all band & crew members of Dead & Co for reminding/puzzling members of the "Lame America" what the true adherence of a life of Liberty, Freedom, and the right to pursue happiness is!
Surely anyone who can get up in front of an audience of millions has to have ego . Hundreds of talented people never play to more than 5 people . You have to back yourself to get where he is.
"There's this other side you get to--and you don't get there very often--I call it this other side, where while you're writing, you're speaking so much of your truth that you're even learning from it." I love that description.

A very smart and spiritually connected guy,... and a stunning interview. I'm sure that - like all of us - he'll fail many times on his spiritual journey but based upon this interview he's a trail-blazer.
I would love to sit down with him and chat about what he's learned about life. He's gained a lot of wisdom over the years. I can't believe how far he's come! I still LOVE John Mayer!
Best interview I have ever seen. Great questions! I am so glad that John Mayor is at this place in his life and I also hope that he continues to find happiness.
In the 21st century perspective with the rise of social media, being an ego addict is quite commonplace. John's level is different of course. Thank you for being honest. This brutal honesty is very helpful.
I totally agree. Today’s society is extremely egotistical. The only difference is that John called it out and recognized that social media makes you an ego addict, if you let it.

He seems so insightful and just… really deep and smart. I think I’ll start listening to his music more :)
He’s a compulsive intellectual. A lot of people can’t take it and don’t have the propensity to understand it. It doesn’t release him from bad decisions but I sympathize. I understand the chaos and loneliness of having that mind. He’s a poet and musical architect and I still respect him and love his music.
Nah, he's pretentious. He thinks he's an intellectual but there are real intellectuals and there are some that have dabbled. But yeah, he's a great musician.
@@zpacify this interview was a long time ago dude. He has changed quite a bit since this
@@zpacify still has an ego but he has definitely grown :)
@@cbmlgia Yeah, I guess so. He's just annoying. He reminds of some people I know that's all. Lol. You guys probably know some like this. The worst ones are the ones that achieve some kind of success. They become more annoying. Lol.
Ugh, when someone uses a word like propensity when it's not necessary it's just stinky.
Garden Chair Well done.. Such an eloquently worded statement.
Garden Chair no ur confusing conceitedness with confidence.

I don't think he's realy that egotistical. I'm egotistical, he's just an intelligent person who knows who he is with a strong personality.
YES..THIS
Exactly man.

John Mayer being interviewed about himself: Talks about himself
RUclips: All this guy does is talk about himself

That's the point
@Dude Sweet I see that everyone has insecurities whether it's having big feet or a dark past and that's fine so not having insecurities is hard to acquire...as impossible.
You've got a lot of nerve expressing your opinion here in the RUclips comment section.
@Dude Sweet did you listen to his first 3 albums? You may not have connected with them personally but I think calling them inauthentic is a little presumptuous, that is, unless you know him personally.

To say “recovered” instead of “recovering” takes some ego.
Exactly
@Yanni Xifaras you never fully recover, that's one of the lessons you learn on recovery

Man. He SPEAKS like a songwriter. This man has such a way with words.
I love how he shows that addiction doesn’t necessarily have to involve tangible things.
"theres nothing you can tell that kid" is the most intelligent self aware answer he could've ever given and i love it.
Don't love it. It's simply raw truth.
The man had the greatest blues/pop/RnB album of all time: Continuum
Just a brilliant piece of art that album is. He's a incredible musician and I'm grateful to be of age to witness and comprehend his artistry in real time...
really? only simple whiite people think he's the greatest. as a musician i think he is mediocre at best
He's far from mediocre but I wouldn't go nearly far as calling him "the greatest ______"

"I check the mirror.. the original twitter.." good god that was deep.
Kyle Williams I actually didn't understand what he meant. care to explain please
I think it means that in the modern society we base our self-worth on the opinion of others and it's much more easier to do that when we have apps like twitter where people can follow you and "like" what you say, therefore creating a false sense of self-esteem. While in the past we looked in the mirror to validate ourself. or something like that idunno

ehhhh thats a bit far fetched. i love john. the person he is, his music. He's definitely a legend. but that comparison is cringe
John is perhaps one of the best adjusted musicians that are well known out there. His level of talent is miles beyond most and at the top of the game. He deserves to enjoy his life as he wants it. He's earned it.
He’s also an asshat. Not a good person
So what, we are all on our journey....
Weatha Morris Uhhhh, yeah. So we're saying the same thing.
Okay!
News flash: we all have egos. We need an ego to organize our internal life. Without an ego, we could not function.
Hes still egocentric but not so addicted about his ego, and tries to be self counscious about it...he says it and shows it clearly yeezz
He is displaying all the signs of somebody who actually is incredibly self doubting, hence his drive to not be what he thinks he is.
No matter how much success he has, he will always doubt himself
This is the heart of his "issues"
Unfortunately, it has made alot of people dislike him, which feeds his deepest problem
He could be wired this way, or have had experiences as a kid that shaped this
Yep. 100% this. Hes a very clever, very insecure, very sensitive and very tortured man.

“Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them”-Bruce Lee
Alex Jolly No, for him it's about his ego, what others think about him. Didn't u watch the interview? I'm not judging him though, and I'm a big fan.
"And I'm just not interested in the things that wont last forever"
AMEN
Oh but a few things do, we can all turn back the clock as far as we're interested too
Then dont be interested in life.
thats what we know that you must not, life is forever
Jacob Clark What a great line!
Glad this man is in the music industry. Intelligent, thought provoking conversation and an all round honest guy. Knows his ego...it's part of him .
Well said. Agreed
this interview is really weirdly edited
Holy crap, I thought I was the only one who noticed this. It's so awful. It seemed like he was really trying to fit an agenda.

But, I truly enjoyed this interview.
i'm sure you have, but i hope you don't mind me asking. did you give his music a shot?
Humility is knowing exactly who you are.
"There's this other side you get to--and you don't get there very often--I call it this other side, where while you're writing, you're speaking so much of your truth that you're even learning from it." I love that description.
