This is one of the most beautiful ironic songs I've ever heard; and not just from our country, but in general. Their sound suggests that they could be the Joy Division of New Zealand. I'm so proud of 80's Aotearoa.
@steve6607 I think you're missing the point Steve. This song was written in response to the 1981 Springbok Tour - probably the most fractured period in New Zealand's recent history. This is a protest song. A very angry, sarcastic, protest song. That's pretty punk rock in my book.
I’m American, and found this song on the excellent documentary “By the Balls” about that turbulent period in NZ. There were a few fantastic post-punk songs in it. Well done, Kiwis!
Muldoon had stuffed up the economy and what followed was turning to the Milton Friedman and the Chicago School of Economics idea of economics which Roger Douglas (Lange Labour Government) introduced and which was refined by the incoming National Government which it took on whole heartedly as did the UK under Margaret Thatcher. Australia never did go completely down that path hence they have not lost ad much as we have.

I met Lange's wife, Naomi. He was supposed to be there but he had to go to Hawaii to be PM. She gave me an award. She looked like a woman under enormous stress. It was...1986 I think. The Beehive reeked of fear and the scent of bloodstained knives removed from backs..
I grew up on Vegemite n' swore I would never convert to the Darkside but suddenly in my mid 30s finally realise-admit to myself Marmite was/is far superior.....I always thought growing up that Vegemite was a kiwi but I was silly and never realised it was a Ozzy brand. I've been so foolish.
Very very tres brilliant indeed ! I've been so waiting for this video to turn up on RUclips. Thanks EVER so much for putting it up. Love Don & the lads !!!
The cover of Anchor Me by a hodge podge of part-time, keen amateur Kiwi musicians (in training...on their mother's side of the family...etc) for the purpose of flagship'ing some political or social justice issue which I can't recall and have no interest in doing so, is such pure audio dog$hit, it was a shoo-in to get recorded and promoted, since that's just how things work these days. I endured about 30 seconds of the thing in order to uncover this truth, so you don't have to. (No, really: DONT GO THERE). PS: If you examine the lyrics to Heater deeply enough, you'll discover some of the most unexpectedly obscure, deep references (IMO), inc. biblical (wire and clay), alchemical (transformation via heat), and more. This might sound obscure (okay, this is obscure), but the fact that the protagonist's name is Frank, leads to the _"Frank Frank, Frankincnse"_ line. Another Biblical reference, of course, and beautifully lyrically crafty, but also, a sly way to encode / encrypt a 666 reference into the lyrics, sub textually. (Per letter-to-number substitution cipher, F is code for 6, ergo FFF = 666.) Sounds whacky, I know...but humour me if you will: what's the opening line in Anchor Me again? Oh yeah, that's right: *_"Full Fathom Five"_* ;)
You'll never know if you never try. Nothing to do with Blam Blam Blam. Just sticking up for Give It A Whirl. The irony of a song from 1981 discussing the lack of problems in NZ is timeless good!
Always gets me going. I remember the amazing energy when this song came out. Check my scrolling sheet music version here: ruclips.net/video/sNpTxkRh-_0/видео.html
I took it as pretty obvious. It is well-known there is no depression in NZ Everything is perfectly fine. Mental and economic health are in the Godzone.
They were dead right. There was a looming depression in NZ in 1981, but it was about to get much worse. Ironic that it was a labour government that ushered in Thatcherite neoliberal economics to NZ. Aotearoa would never be that stable ever again and the wealth gap continues to increase to this day. The crusty old Muldoon 70's may have felt a bit stifling and conservative. But in fact that was the last time New Zealand was a stable homogenous society.
This IS our new National Anthem ... we have Jacinda Ardern to thank for that ... I wonder how long it will take for the Armed Offenders Squad to break down my door for that comment?
What an excellent old banger of a song
41 f__king years ago, and the last time I checked (+/-3 minutes from now.) this was still accurate

You've got to listen to their other great song- Don't fight it Marsha,

It's even more revelant coz we now have synthetics
It's so weird to hear someone actually sing the word 'New Zealand' in a song.
