Excellent memories for me and this song...the beach, my first car, sneaking out with my friend at her cottage in Grand Bend in the middle of the night to hang out with The Ramones, lemon gin and getter sicker than a dog from drinking it. Wouldn't have missed those days for anything. Thank God for memories.
Preach it, Jay! I to first saw this video on MTV in 1981. Of course that was a time when MTV aired music videos instead of the current garbage that NOBODY watches!
***** Ted Turner!?? BLECCHHH, you have my sympathy! I think I'd rather watch paint dry than watch anything that idiot has to offer. The original MTV VJ's were great; the ones we've had since then suck!
Props to the dude in the tan suit not singing or playing any instrument... just swaying to the groove and giving moral support to the rest of the band....
That's Noel Crombie, and he contributed a lot to Split Enz; he designed and made their costumes, designed some of their album covers, directed their videos, and played percussion.
I got you, that's all I want I won't forget, that's a whole lot I don't go out, now that you're in Sometimes we shout, but that's no problem I don't know why sometimes I get frightened You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying Look at you, you're a pageant You're everything, that I've imagined Something's wrong, I feel uneasy You show me, tell me you're not teasing I don't know why sometimes I get frightened You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying I don't know why sometimes I get frightened You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying There's no doubt, not when I'm with you When I'm without, I stay in my room Where do you go, I get no answer You're always out, it gets on my nerves I don't know why sometimes I get frightened You can see my eyes you can tell that I'm not lying I don't know why sometimes I get frightened You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying I don't know why sometimes I get frightened You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying
That's cool to know people are still discovering great music from the past. Don't forget these guys, Neil and Tim Finn, started the band Crowded House after this.

Man,, I was 3 when this came out… unbelievable.. I love it because that’s all I heard playing from the attic with my older brothers. Incredible memory nothing but the best music in my house across-the-board. 1977! I wouldn’t change a thing.
***** I was almost 9 years old when this first came out. But I remember it getting heavy radio play throughout most of the 80s and early 90s. The song is that good.
1980, duel edged sword for me. I graduated from high school, however; I met my first wife that last year in school. The rest of '80 was pretty great with 4 mostly shitty years following. I did become a father in '82 though. She was the bomb to anyone that knew her (she passed 5 weeks ago). Not even her ex's hate her, how does that happen? I hate the hell out of my ex's.
My daughter Jacqui, my only child, extended the lives of at least 5 people, one who was hours from death. I couldn't be more proud of her. Thank you for your kind words, it's very touching and appreciated. To be honest, it's substantially easier to type those words than it is to actually speak them out loud. The words often catch in my throat when I try.
My brother and I went to see Neil Finn in Austin, TX. New Zealand is no doubt proud of this talent. He was unbelievable. In Austin we get a LOT of great bands, but his show really stands out to me. Also, very humble personable guy. Hats off to the Finn brothers, Split Enz, and New Zealand. What a talented phenom.
I was hoping to finally see them this year for my 40th Birthday, doesn't look like covid will allow it. I remember getting Woodface on tape for my 12th birthday. Based on my love of Don't Dream it's over & This Split Enz classic. That was me CH smitten for life.
@@s.marcus3669 I'm pretty sure most people who knew much about 80s music are much older than twenty-something by now. Certainly no one who was born in the 80s is still twenty-something years old.
When the Split Enz released this, I wonder if they realized they were starting off one of greatest decades in music of all time? It must be humbling for them to realize what they were the beginning of.
Well, here in the UK in the mid 70’s into early 80’s we had bands that were world wide like The Who, The Rolling Stones, Black sabbath, T-Rex, yes, Duran Duran, level 42, the kinks, the jam, Pink Floyd, UB40, the Buzzcocks, the human league, Depeche Mode, the Cure, the clash, the sex pistols, led zeppelin, Eurythmics, Tears for Fears, Dire Straits, genesis, status quo, the sweet, 10cc, the animals, the pretenders, the undertones, Queen, iron maiden, Def Leppard, simple minds, madness, joy division, the police, Fleetwood Mac, Gary Numan, Ultravox, echo and the bunnymen, Judas Priest, thin lizzy, Motörhead, ELO, Roxy music, happy Mondays, Spandau Ballet, David Bowie and many more…so I wouldn’t say they were the beginning of.
Here is another song that uses this effect. What I call a ‘tonal shift’. Not a true modulation, but a sort of displaced, or hidden key center. ruclips.net/video/qGzIKOYJBYo/видео.html
A Crowded House video popped up in my feed, I thought to myself that I really liked Split Enz too...searched...arrived here...been at least 20 years since I heard this...still know every single word ! 16 years old when this came out, what a time to be alive...16 in 1980 ...started working at 14...bought my own HUGE Pioneer boom box...best one Pioneer made at the time...bought it at Pacific Stereo of all places 😂
I love that the verses are made to sound uneasy and anxious; the 007 style muted guitar riff, the Prophet-5 synthesizer lead in the background, punctuating every sentence with a ghostly, distant howl. It's all so suspenseful and really makes me feel like I am alone in my room, lamenting over my love for someone, still paranoid and damaged from a previous relationship; just not trusting enough yet. Then the chorus kicks in all Elvis Costello style, with poppy organ and major chords, and Neil starts apologizing, stumbling over his words to the girl he loves. She wonders why he is so anxious and wound up over what she might be doing without him, behind his back, or when she doesn't answer the phone. "I don't know why sometimes I get frightened." he says, and then seeks reassurance "Tell me you're not lying". This is what makes a song fantastic. It all lines up! The sound, the lyrics, and the topic are all tightly nit; the tone of the music matches the mood of the lyrics, and it all comes together in a catchy song. I'm sure a lot of us have been in that jealous relationship, where you don't trust your lover because you think they're way out of your league, and could have anyone, so whenever you're left alone, you begin to ruminate over how they're probably not interested in you. "Why would she want to be with me, when she could have anyone?"
Perfectly put. The lyric and its accompanying music are telling a story and presenting an atmosphere. All perfectly packaged into 3 minutes! That takes skill!
I always liked this song. The chorus always stuck with me cos it was always played at the fairground when we were on the walzer in the late 70s and early 80s great memories ❤
When you are thinking or speaking of her I think she hears you and she's watching over you. Always look out for signs. They can be very subtle. My mother-in-law let me smell her perfume a few years after she died it came to me for a split second. I was shocked I never had anything like this happen before or since. I hope you get a sign from your dear friend
losing a friend is the pitts....sorry for your loss. What a great song to remember your friend by. I hope she gives you some signs that she is still watching over you.
When i first heard of Split Enz in the late 70's they utterly blew me away.... got every album and saw them at Hammersmith Odeon.... so ahead of their time! Crowded House were great but it all started here first for me! ❤
People always seem sad when remembering great songs such as this, be happy you lived through those years, be glad of the memories, and remember the people that where there with you and maybe are no longer around
yeah, but I'll tell you why it's sad, it's cuz we have proof we could have good music if we wanted it, we _know_ new music doesn't have to suck... reminds me of how punk was a reaction to disco, imagine just reminiscing about old pop/rock and letting disco reign forever
ytubeanon There’s still good stuff out there, it is just very obscure. The real problem is that the popular record labels decided they could make just as much money cheapening out and trotting out the same old tarnished pop stars year after year. Like the film and TV industry, the music industry has been become addicted to “playing it safe”, only pushing the boundaries when it comes to explicit language and topics in music but never being willing to experiment with new and different musical styles. Eventually, that will change, and until then we have unknown acts to discover on the internet and classic hits like this one to fall back on.
2024 here .. So if you notice the Keyboard player @ 2:40 he dances exactly like I did for the 7th grade talent show .. I almost walked away the champ.. made all the chics melt .. 👈🏼
This song is simply amazing. Very basic instrumentation, the organ harmonizes with the vocals perfectly, simple beat, great hook, great lyrics .... just an extremely well written song.
I heard this song as a junior in high school, we were all at a pizza restaurant called Mr. Gatti's. I didn't really think either way about the song, wasn't sure if I really liked the song, but there was a cute strawberry blonde girl that I had seen before but didn't know her. She said "OMG, I love that song". If she loved it, then I loved it! I was so in love with her, I couldn't hear this song without thinking of her. I bought the record and played the song everyday. Anne Adams, where ever you are today, I still think of you every time I hear this song and I still love this song.

Every summer I'd come to Miami for summer vacation my mom lived here, the year this song came was 1980, I met this girl at the beach and fell in love lol, I graduated in 81 so I moved to Miami with my mother and said goodbye Philadelphia, first thing I did was looked Jennifer up and we started going out and we are still together till this day! Great Musical masterpiece !
Never tired to listen !
Bought this as a single in 1980 with my pocket money! The song is still awesome.
Come across this in a group in the UK. I remember it well. Good song.
Neil Finn was about 17 when he wrote this song! I could barely string a sentence together. I now live in NZ . this is a stunning song by a hugely underrated band. Hello england
Hello from the UK I totally agree stay safe
The man is a musical genius and it's a shame the world does not realize it
One of the best bands ever - no matter what year!
People who say this band is underrated must be under 35.
'ello Kiwis, yankisorus here, California NOT dreaming!! I was 10 or 11 living in Aussieland, (Melbourne) years ago 'course, this song was #1 on top of the pops Australia 🦘 AND the U.K!! Way ahead of it's time. I mean shit, you could listen to this song today and it doesn't sound outdated at all. My wife who's 10 years younger than me thought it was some pop song from the local 📻 radio!!! Great times the '80's.....
Great classic 80’s tune! I’m flashing back to being 14/15 yo. Without MTV we don’t hear (or see!) this one. Went on to form Crowded House.
1980: was just a glimpse of what was to come in the best decade of music!!!
Dr K I agree, but I think that glimpse started in 1978.
Yeah? The decade of people not playing musical instruments?
BOLLOCKS was it the best decade...
You are very right. How are you doing? Hope you are fine and staying safe out there?
Excellent memories for me and this song...the beach, my first car, sneaking out with my friend at her cottage in Grand Bend in the middle of the night to hang out with The Ramones, lemon gin and getter sicker than a dog from drinking it. Wouldn't have missed those days for anything. Thank God for memories.
I loved and love this song. How many of you wish we could board a huge time machine and go back? Miss the days of good music. They're gone.

I remember watching this on MTV when MTV was good. Great song!
Preach it, Jay! I to first saw this video on MTV in 1981. Of course that was a time when MTV aired music videos instead of the current garbage that NOBODY watches!
Right on!
***** Ted Turner!?? BLECCHHH, you have my sympathy! I think I'd rather watch paint dry than watch anything that idiot has to offer.
The original MTV VJ's were great; the ones we've had since then suck!
Yessssss.
That was the day...back in the 80's.
Props to the dude in the tan suit not singing or playing any instrument... just swaying to the groove and giving moral support to the rest of the band....
😄
That's Noel Crombie, and he contributed a lot to Split Enz; he designed and made their costumes, designed some of their album covers, directed their videos, and played percussion.
2024!!!🖤💚 my wonderful father showed me this on the teenage kicks album.
These cats were so ahead of their time! Great tunes we had back in the 80s...
I got you, that's all I want
I won't forget, that's a whole lot
I don't go out, now that you're in
Sometimes we shout, but that's no problem
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying
Look at you, you're a pageant
You're everything, that I've imagined
Something's wrong, I feel uneasy
You show me, tell me you're not teasing
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying
There's no doubt, not when I'm with you
When I'm without, I stay in my room
Where do you go, I get no answer
You're always out, it gets on my nerves
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes you can tell that I'm not lying
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying
I miss when people would type out lyrics in comments. We need to bring that back. 👍
And Neil Finn wrote this gem at 21!!!!
I heard for the first time this song about a year ago. Excellent song! It's so good to keep finding great songs and bands from the past.
That's cool to know people are still discovering great music from the past. Don't forget these guys, Neil and Tim Finn, started the band Crowded House after this.
@@davidadams2395 True! As a fan of the 80s' (and other decades) I'm always looking and finding new stuff that I missed or was not so popular here in my country.
And yes, after a couple of views of this video I was like "wait a minute, I know that face... and that voice...is that the singer of Crowded House?" Dirty Creature and Message To My Girl are also great!

I was almost 9 years old when this first came out.

Rob Dotzler I am very sorry for the loss of your daughter. I can't imagine losing a child. You are very strong, to be able to talk about it. :)
By far one of the BEST songs ever made by anyone
I still love this era of music from my teen years.
+Bill Brown Neil Finn one of the best songwriters. Ever.

Saw crowded house 20 yrs ago front row center and they performed this song there. ‘Twas epic!
I was hoping to finally see them this year for my 40th Birthday, doesn't look like covid will allow it. I remember getting Woodface on tape for my 12th birthday. Based on my love of Don't Dream it's over & This Split Enz classic. That was me CH smitten for life.
The song was playing in TARGET yesterday and now I just cannot stop hearing it in my head!
I heard it in a Wendy's and was surprised to realize the song was as old as it is (actually 1979).
That's because all the twenty-somethings of the 1980s now run ad agencies that sell canned music to stores!
@@s.marcus3669 I'm pretty sure most people who knew much about 80s music are much older than twenty-something by now. Certainly no one who was born in the 80s is still twenty-something years old.
@@k-leb4671 You win the prize for the biggest non-sequitur of the year, Caleb.
Am I really that old? nearly 40 years ago this top tune is and still sounds fresh as ever. I want to go back in time too, music of my youth

first time I hear this song, and that chorus CAME OUT OF NOWHERE, and it hit me like a ton of bricks! and I liked it!
I love that juxtaposition between verse and chorus!
The chorus was how I was able to find the song. Then I was surprised to learn it was recorded in the fall of 1979.
Here is another song that uses this effect. What I call a ‘tonal shift’. Not a true modulation, but a sort of displaced, or hidden key center. ruclips.net/video/qGzIKOYJBYo/видео.html
I am with you there 😍
The early '80s were a true renaissance for popular music. Great music and highly innovative videos, like this one.
007 muted guitar..didnt realise till you mentioned it ..excellently noticed 🙂
Perfectly put. The lyric and its accompanying music are telling a story and presenting an atmosphere. All perfectly packaged into 3 minutes! That takes skill!
BRUH. You just beautifully and succinctly laid out what makes this song so amazing.
Fantastic review, agree with the muted guitar opening and the restrained menacing character (which I love since I first heard this in 1980). Thanks!
Best song review ever.
One of the best songs ever! 😍
When I heard this song recently, just fell in love. Did not know the singer is also in Crowded House.
And his brother
The singer is touring with Fleetwood Mac
Crowded House was a pretty cool band back then, probaly ahead of their time. The Finn bros wrote amazing marerial for younger generations to discover
Paul McCartney once said Tim Finn (The Lead singer of this and Crowded House) was his favorite songwriter. These guys are on another level.
He has since replaced Lindsey Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac (after they fired Buckingham). At the time of this video, Neil Finn was just 21.
I always liked this song. The chorus always stuck with me cos it was always played at the fairground when we were on the walzer in the late 70s and early 80s great memories ❤

Brings lots of happy memories,my best friend was alive, now she has got her wings,it reminds me all the fun we had,.
That’s very true. How are you doing? Hope you are fine and staying safe out there?
When you are thinking or speaking of her I think she hears you and she's watching over you. Always look out for signs. They can be very subtle. My mother-in-law let me smell her perfume a few years after she died it came to me for a split second. I was shocked I never had anything like this happen before or since. I hope you get a sign from your dear friend
losing a friend is the pitts....sorry for your loss. What a great song to remember your friend by. I hope she gives you some signs that she is still watching over you.

Rapidly becoming one of my favorite songs.
This is the same sort of style as Echo Beach by Martha and the Muffins, which I suppose isn't surprising since they're both from early 1980.
2019 anyone?? Here’s a good totally 80s track.
Rapidly becoming one of my favorite songs.

It does have a mean hook. I've only recently heard this song.
Many many hooks actually. The opening of the song is a hook itself.

This song brings a smile to my face. No, I am not frighten- I don't know why I would be. Just happy that this is my generation of songs growing up.
