It woukd be interesting to see a navy pov when a ship was out at sea and no radio contact. The hellhole they must have returned to. The last ship deals with this very well and would be a good grounding point to base on.

If you've ever read "On the Beach" by Neville Shute it covers the perspective of the last operational US nuclear sub following a nuclear war trying to survive as the wave of radiation slowly moves south from the Northern hemisphere. Obviously a different reality, but the trauma of everyone involved is significant as they try and make contact with anyone left in the US while maintaining a semblance of command structure.
Any naval task force at sea, from any country, would obviously be impacted. They'd not be infected and would know, at least initially, what was happening. But how long they could get information and direction would vary. We do know that the President remained in charge for a while, but how well communications held up for existing military forces we don't know. Any ships returning to the US would obviously be susceptible to infection. Even months after the initial outbreak. What would they do? Without resupply they couldn't stay at sea indefinitely. But imagine a ballistic missile submarine on patrol. Designed not to have contact for 2-3 months only to return to base and find out this had happened. Who knows what those folks would do. Something unexplored currently.

Frighteningly enough, if covid had been like the Black Plague that destroyed Europe and Central Asia; we would have experienced seven out of ten death rates worldwide.

@@stormer9952 We were lucky that covid wasn't a sincerely unique and deadly virus. It was very contagious but still only affected specific people in such a disastrous way. If there is ever an outbreak of a virus that is equally as deadly and doesn't discriminate - like a smallpox strain - a situation like outlined in The Division is totally believable. There's a reason the smartest people on the planet seem to agree that the biggest threat to human annihilation is a global viral pandemic. I think it would take a legitimate attack like the green poison narrative rather than just a natural outbreak, it would have to hit a lot of places at the same time, but it's a scary possibility.

    • @captainbroady
      @captainbroady Год назад

@@stormer9952 Yea I think media sensationalism and misinformation very quickly caused panic during the initial stages. But the vaccines came out and the pandemic progressed, people realised it wasn't as deadly as it was thought to be. We missed a bullet here. If the virus was 10 times or 100 times deadlier than it was, then I think we could have quite possibly tasted societal and economic collapse.

I always enjoy watching NGN's videos but the question that has always been killing me is mainly the transition to the 2nd Division. We ended up cutting the heads off of the Cleaners, Rikers, and LMB, then ended up clearing out their heavily defended areas in NY in the 1st Division and had multiple dlcs after it to keep it replayable. But the thing that I always wondered is what happened to our agent after the first Division. There was no explanation as to what happened to the character we play as with the transition. we basically fast forward to helping out another Division agent defend against rag tag enemies right before the comms went dark and the LMB invaded. Especially when Warlords of New York dropped and Keener destroyed the main area we spent all our time building and fortifying in the 1st Division there's so many questions surrounding that one building and what happened to agents and other people that survived the attack.

I recently watched World War Z and having been in the military myself, I found that movie to have a pretty good grasp on how the military would respond to a massive pandemic where the upper chain of command dies.
As for the Division, I wondered what happen to all our over seas bases knowing that other countries seem to have faired better than the US. I mean, there are obviously Air Force since supply drops keep coming in.
You'd also think that the UN or NATO forces would deploy to main land US to assist in reestablishing order since Europe apparently faired better. I do know that a PMC like Natalia's would likely never reach our coastline unless it was a world conspiracy against the US. especially with all the armed hostile factions that roam in the Division's version of the US.
Anyway, great video. Always fun thinking about that universe.

Also one thing that would be cool to know is what happened to the speaclized military units such as Rangers and Delta because even though it got pretty much explained but theyre really skilled in all asspects of combat so it would be cool if when things broke down if they still stayed true to their oath but instead of nationwide they're protecting the communities of where they live and so you would have a future allied faction better and more skilled that the BTSU around but just in a no so prevlant area where main factions like that exist

Special Ops units would probably be focused towards protecting principal leaders after the collapse of any command structure, and if not then they would probably turn to protecting isolated groups (especially the Green Berets, who would train and help equip the communities they are working with). Overall in a threat like that presented in the Division games you wouldn't want to risk losing high value soldiers unless absolutely necessary, but when it comes to the BTSU and any other possible elite enemy factions maybe then. One of my wishes for Heartland or even Division 3 is that we do get some semblance of that, survivors of units or even the different branches banding together to oppose said elite enemy factions and trying to restore some part of America, if not trying to unite communities against the threats of the times.

Great video. It made me consider the Navy in the world of the Div. I served on the west coast and was deployed during the earthquake in the early 90's. We were not aware until we started an at-sea replenishment - word spread FAST and the crew became very upset that we hadn't been told and had no info. This was pre-Internet access, no cell phone, etc. We were close enough to quickly return to port and care for families but we stayed on mission. It was tense. I can't imagine how similar would play out in a pandemic or the Division's story line. And we were just on a month long outing, so very short: a real deployment would be 6-9 months and far from home port. Physically, there would a number of isolated and deployed ships and submarines around the world during the Green Poison story - wonder if there were any Division agents in the military?!?

If the game developers are paying attention, there is so much they can do with this series for years to come. So many what ifs and possibilities to explore. I'm damn near hooked after discovering this stuff barely a month ago. I was playing the mobile game and was wondering this myself. I assumed the jtf were a mix of service members across the board who were combat troops, with either the NG or AF as command for the group. Even after the near real world scenario we just had, I'm pretty sure the military would never be prepared for this type of thing. Don't really have the numbers or training to deal with it. Especially if this were a completely national meltdown as portrayed in game. Cities with bases would probably be 50/50 and NG armories are usually severely exposed and/or defenseless. Regular troops would be fodder, bullet magnets, sentries and bullet sponges for SF and SHD just like in the game. I hate to say it, but there would also be a lot of civvies and militias who would target service members specifically as a threat to their wellbeing rather than see the military as trying to restore order and protect the innocent and infrastructure. Or see it as a chance to put down anyone seen as helping the government

One pain I do have, is that we got great military uniforms, including a scrimmed up sniper suit...to run around Manhatten in during the winter (fine, I enjoyed it).
_But_ in Washington D.C during the summer, which has turned into a mixture of swamp, marshes and overgrown vegetation everywhere, verging on being woodland.... no sniper suit 😂.
Instead, we just get these illiminous costumes or sniper hoods that are just grey blank canvases... I have to mix up bits and pieces to make myself mostly camoflauged. Yeah, you can be seen by player ID mostly and the bright lights on your equipment flashing away (always thought that was dumb lol), but for me, it's really immersion breaking.

Even given that there was an outbreak in the world of the Division, I think the military forces could simply have declared a lockdown and holed up in their bases. Or pulled together to protect key facilities (power stations, nuclear launchers) and concentrate the remaining leadership of the country. This is usually what happens in fictional stories.
To be fair, the game doesn't really explore these points, given that much of the story revolves around agents and opposing factions.
But I was always upset that the JTF, in the ranks of which there should be both command and combat units of law enforcement agencies and the army, are always exposed as whipping boys.

That's a large amount of combat tested, well armed, trained folks who don't have to worry about the lead weight of command to get things done. It'd be interesting to see how many militias are keeping communities safe. I mean if groups like the rikers and outcasts are surviving I would think militia communities would be thriving.

I laughed at loud at the badge for the Space Force. Warhammer 40k for the win! Although, sadly, the world of The Division is rather grim dark in that sense.
Great summary though. Casualties on the sort of scale that happened in this universe would very much impact every aspect of society, including the military. And the military would also be very susceptible, as Tom Parrott was saying to me on Twitter, to the breakdown of the chain of command. In the military it's very formalized and those units that do seem to be semi functional are operating on a much smaller scale and area, The True Sons for example, and have a more autocratic chain of command. Yes The True Sons have ranks, but it was clear from previous manhunts that the higher the rank doesn't necessarily mean they're in charge. Major Castillo, for example, seemed to have less responsibility than Lieutenants.
And, as you said, with so many soldiers being in close quarters it's no surprise that they may have even had a higher infection rate than the general population because all it takes is one person getting sick and many more do. Which would spark the desertions, people looking to find family, and people just trying to get away from disease. Those that didn't have family might join up with regional groups like The True Sons or, per Parrott's book, the Molossi, or hopefully the JTF. But they'd want that structure that the armed forces provides.
That said. You also have to think that, with the massive impact on the military just like everywhere else in society, there are stockpiles of military hardware sitting around somewhere. Every state has multiple National Guard Armories, as well as larger military bases. Fuel might be a challenge, but there would certainly be the equipment for wannabe warlords to set up their own fiefdoms. We've seen DC and NYC. And even a bit of Texas in books. But places like Montana with the preppers and people with massive stockpiles of weapons could be definitely not great.
Anyway. Hopefully all things we learn more about in the future.

The Army alone is huge, and I doubt most of them turned their back on the JTF. You got Rangers, Green Berets, and Delta force. If any of these units are in the JTF, then we should have already won against the BTSU. Also, it’s very unlikely all of them joined the BTSU, or other hostile factions. You also have other branches special forces to consider. Seal Team 6 (DEVGRU), Marsoc (Marine raiders), USAF PJ’s, and TAC-P’s. Why aren’t we seeing any of these guys? The game should address that the Army isn’t the only branch that exists.

Remember lots of operators got their ticket punched by a goat farmer with a 50 year old AK. Imagine the casualty rate fighting former soliders with the same gear they have (mostly) Plus with unrest at home, high-ranking officials would have tasked them with protective details. We know the seals would resort to their common tactics as they were always meant as commandos so working without high command would be normal for them as an example but what about force recon seals rangers delta etc. Sure us military is strong but the special forces tend to be top tier where division would get some but not all of it's agents.

Playing Devil's Advocate here, but part of military induction is a series of injections designed to inoculate a soldier for a decent fighting chance of withstanding a wide variety of viral and weaponized biologicals. In comparison to the game world for the driving force of the player's story (and perhaps short-sided writing), the player(s) are supposed to fill the role of any remaining armed forces via guerilla warfare, whereas in a more realistic world scenario, about the only thing that would stop the US military from being an effective fighting force are logistics and inability to maintain a command structure. You can bet there would be pockets of units fighting to the last man to defend the country or whatever remains in that moment, alongside civilian counterparts.
At any rate, the thing that always bothered me in the game world of The Division is that the JTF is/was always painted as a unit of essentially crosswalk guards and lunch ladies with the inability to do much of anything towards an effective fighting force. That, and the game world is made up of limitless anti-player faction numbers that despite (at last check) the NPC kill count, players have killed the world population equivalent more than two times over. In a truly evolving game board, eventually you'd think that roamers and such would dwindle down Some... 🤷‍♂
