"Tiger don't change his stripes" .. and Sawyer never really did change his stripes. He continued to con because that was what he was good at. "I used to lie for a living" he says in the same episode where he is "living a lie" .. "LaFleur".

The biggest difference between Sawyer and Kate is that Sawyer owns up to what he's done and Kate doesn't. She knows he's a criminal but is still charmed by him so she tries to change him into some kind of a hero. But Sawyer doesn't like to pretend. That's why he never told her that he killed Locke's father in cold blood. Sawyer's gotten used to Kate constantly forgiving him because she doesn't hold him accountable for anything and makes excuses for him because the same thing happened with Cassidy. These two women knew he's a criminal but they forgot about it because they were attracted to him.

Well yeah. This scene just indicates what they both do. Kate “runs”. Sawyer “cons”. People are who they are. No matter how much they try change.
      Well….. most of the time….

I know people like to give Evangeline Lilly shit for her acting ability. But this scene is one of my favorite performances of hers. She had the ability. Just often had subpar dialogue
