I'm so glad you recorded this episode! As a person who always struggled with thinning, brittle hair, I went down the rabbit hole of hair care. My journey has begun exactly 2 years ago when in Poland (when I'm from) "włosing" ("hairing") trend grew big. It's all about the right techniques of taking care of one's hair and learning how to read product ingredients. With a very few changes to my normal routine my hair started to grow and stay on my scalp. If I had to pick only one thing that was a game changer, it's massaging my scalp for a minute when I wash my head. Not hair, just the scalp. The foam will drip down your hair washing it, no need to "laundry" your hair. I have not been consistent with enzymatic peelings on my scalp which usually helps with hair growth. I have not been consistent with with applying the proper scalp product either because the good stuff is easily available in Poland and I can bring back only that much to the US in my luggage. And I do have this lovely red LED helmet but my husband uses it more regularly than me. Regardless of this, the very fact I massage my scalp has transformed my hair! Also, I don't use a towel to dry my hair. Use a cotton t-shirt to minimize the damage. Use a hairbrush (wet paddle brush) to distribute your conditioner. Use a silk pillow and silk hairbands. For curls, I recommend silk curlers. That's all you need to really improve the look of your hair once you choose the right products that suit you. To sum it up, HOW you apply is as important as WHAT you apply.
@thatmagicalbeing 37. I wash my hair (and massage my scalp) usually every day in the morning. 2-3 times a week I also massage in some scalp cosmetics but I'm not very consistent with this. I had high TSH, hypoglycemia, tetany, and high-stress levels for a long time but around COVID lockdowns I started to sleep longer (as in starting working remotely) which improved my overall health so it's also a factor. But I (and my hairdresser!) noticed a difference after I implemented the changes I wrote about. I hope thet helps!
@@sophiadc Thank you for sharing! Brushing hair (the scalp) helps to stimulate the scalp so massaging it definitely works the same. I don’t brush, wash and putting serum on my hair everyday, I try to but very so often miss a day or so in between. Seeing your experience encourages me there is still hope to grow back some of the losing hair. My friends and I are starting to notice our hair loss in our 30s, and constantly working on the issue. It’s definitely something what age do to us, so we could only do what we could to slow down the process.
"When it comes to medicine there's an art, when it comes to science there's an art. And that's why sometime with scientific things you have to see it through the lens, of not just the scientific information, but also through the lens of the patient and how you're going to make that patient best adhere to a protocol. And that's where the art comes in." Bravo Dr. Well said.
Would you please do a video discussing the male-pattern hair thinning/loss for those of us women who suffer from PCOS & how to address that to regrow hair? Thank you for everything that you do!!😊❤
When it started for me I didn’t even want to go to a salon. I was so embarrassed to have thinning hair now I see how silly that was. I used red light therapy and the caffeine shampoos, rosemary oil and dandruff shampoo. All of the at has helped but I never went back to my original hair but it’s better. I will try minoxidil yet I can’t afford to shed any hair at first.
Ladies I think we are all in this together but please don't let it bring you down instead use this as a motivational push and start with your regain hair back journey, it is long but will pay off. I have been adding daily tonic to hair, rosemary shampoo and nizoral alternating massaging hair everyday via tonic using wooden wide comb and avoiding blowdrying as much as possible and 2 times a week oiling hair (my own home made mix of all good oils- rosemary, castor, mint, black seed oil, sesame oil, fenugreek oil and adding actual sage leaves, bay leaves and some cloves if you have hemp seeds throw some in too. I swear by this oil started during covid but was not consistent but was for my mom who was 70 then and by time she passed I promise she had the thickest braid ever. Also taking vitamin E, pumpkin seed oil pills and vitamin D.
Stress can be gone. But once you have hsir loss bc of health probs or hormonal problems it's too hard to fight. I almost cry missing my dense hair and doctors don't understand me. When i see girls with dense and long hair i just don't want to go outside and stay at home all day... but i have university to go.
@@miraalhomoudavoiding blowdry is not a good thing i think. Cause it's not straightening your hair with heat. It just helps your hair to get less frizzy and hinders headaches and even more.
hey shereene idriss, im so sorry that youve had a tough time, i send you the best energy and warmth, its really helpful to watch your videos and you contribute to peoples well being.
I'm almost 47 and perimenopausal and prone to hair shedding thanks to hypothyroidism. I don't have thick hair to begin with so I'm always nervous about losing too much hair. I noticed that my hair seemed a little thinner and my hairline seemed to have gotten a little further back. Despite this, my hair still grows quickly and doesn't have breakage, so at least I don't have to deal with those issues. I started taking Verisol collagen (5 gms of the powder) for my skin and joints three months ago, not really expecting anything for my hair, and, after about 8 weeks, I started to notice that my hair part looked narrower and my hair looked thicker at the roots. The side of my hairline where it had thinned more looks like it's filled in a little, which is exciting. My overall hair quality looks really good lately- just extra shiny and healthy looking. So, that might be worth trying if you have midlife hair thinning.
Kerastase leave in heat protectant is hands down the best. I’m a hairdresser for 13+ years and switched over to be a nurse and now a nurse practitioner for the last year. So you’re speaking my lingo in regards to art and science. Give it a try you won’t regret it. There’s an orange one and a green one. Orange is more hydrating and the green is more for protein and breakage. The product is specifically called thermique
I've had very mixed results with their products and honestly for the price point I have found significantly better with less silicone. I swapped their conditioning mask for OUD deep conditioning mask which is EXCELLENT. Also completely agree with Dr Idris, K18 is brilliant as is Olaplex 6 combined with 7 (mix together then apply). The 2 Olaplex products together are hands down the best styling and repairing/leave ons I've tried. My hair is long and naturally frizzy but these products always leave it super shining and smooth but not weighed down
Great video. I was extremely low in vitamin D for 3 years or more. I was shedding so much I created hair balls on my carpet in the bedroom. I've been taking 3000 IUs for 2 years and my vitamin D hit 400. I'm seeing new growth slowly. I'm post menopause. Can't wait for next week's facial hair seems like they're I lost on my head the more o grew on my face
Everyone’s journey and experiences are different- I’ll just share what I’m doing and works well for me and helps me to at least maintain. I can’t help the hair thats broken off, but I am using the bond repair products and I think they help. I’m focusing on growing new thicker hair also. I increased my protein intake. Work on scalp health with taking omega 3, zinc and vitamin D from supplement and sun bathe for 15 a day (which also helps my mental). I’m using ammonia based hair dye to minimize hair damage- for my root touch ups. Have considered minoxidil, but I am liking and feeling good about this route and want to avoid drugs if I can. 50 y/o peri menopausal, with psoriasis , and fellow doc here. If you’re still testing out products to help with hair thinning/hair loss, the Pura d’Or shampoos & their serum specifically targeting hair thinning concerns helped me reduce a great deal the amount of hair I was shedding every day. The original gold label that has 17 DHT blockers is the one I would recommend for those with advanced hair loss and/or coarse hair. Otherwise, for those like me who are in the beginning stages of hair thinning/hair loss and/or have medium to fine hair, I would go with the blue label that still has like 15 DHT blockers but is not so heavy on the hair. As for the rest, well, nutrition wise, testing your vitamin D, iron, zinc, folate & B12 levels to see if you need to specifically supplement with something is not a bad idea. If you’re colouring your hair, a good hair mask for the first 2 washes following your hair appointment will help strengthen your hair & limit the loss of density due to cumulative breakage because colouring is a drying process for your hair. And finally, a good leave in conditioner & a good bonding oil for your ends after a hair wash helps to strengthen your hair health on a regular basis.
This! Also- Routine Wellness shampoo and conditioner are some other good ones. Agree about the vitamins- makes a huge difference. Also, maybe using products best for your hair type. I asked ChatGTP (haha) for best products for type 1A, fine, high-porosity hair & it gave me some good weekly mask recommendations!
@ I’m still using all of it. My hair is growing back and density is coming back. It’s a long process because I have years of damage to repair due to coloring & contracting Covid twice in the past few years.
Thanks Dr Shereen, as a 61 year old woman who 1st experienced hair loss 1 1/2 years ago (and just started seeing a dermatologist) I'm extremely grateful that you share your own hair -,loss journey with us ♥️. Am personally waiting for my next appointment to see what's going on. God bless 🙏👌
I feel so seen when you greet us as little nerds 😂 I’m 54 been on hrt for the last year and half but I can see my hair starting to thin… so the timing of this is great thank you!
@@annem5890 no not at all - on the contrary I think without it I might be seeing more thinning - although I’m not a doctor, that’s just an educated guess! I have a family history of hair thinning, and as someone with quite fine curly hair anyway, always had those little baby hairs at my temples.. I just see those areas broadening a little. I’ve been taking collagen supplements and nutrifol for the last month so I’m going to add the anti dandruff shampoo and see if that makes a difference. I think we have to be prepared to wait at least 3 months before seeing a difference. If I don’t see an improvement I will maybe add minoxidil I’m happy for you to be starting hrt - it was a game changer for me! ☺️
I wa son HRT for six months and my hair was shedding wildly. I stopped HRT and took different vitamins like Vit D, Vitamin b complex and minerals and my hair gre back.
@karziflora I'm hoping that works for me too. Vit d deficient, so on a weekly prescribed high does and working on being consistent with taking my multi vitamins.
Mixed reasons for hair loss here as well. Oral minoxidil helped me as well. Took 6 months to notice a change. I’ve added oral finasteride now as well because I still have sparse frontal loss. Still waiting for that to improve. I take b12 , D , and iron. Covid infections more times than I can count have also taken their toll. Plus menopause…yay. Best wishes to you and everyone with hair loss. It’s a bummer.
Great to know that Nizoral has side benefits. I use it for scalp issues from time to time…gonna use it more often now. It’s the only “dandruff” style shampoo that doesn’t cause nasty buildup with my hard water.
I have stick straight hair which is a mixed blessing, but I cannot use conditioner, it weights my hair down and makes me look as though my hair is thin which is not the case, I have lots of hair. In desperation I tried what my grandmother used to rinse my hair when I was a very small child. Five parts water to one part cider vinegar pour through your hair after washing and messaged into your scalp and then thoroughly rinse. It detangles your hair and does not weigh it down, it doesn't damage your color, and leaves hair soft and shiny. Works for me!
Hi Shereene, i hope your family is well. My husband is lebanese, but we live in other country. Its a tragedy what is happening there... God bless Lebanon and its brave people ❤
I have been experiencing hair loss over the past few years (I’m 64 years old) I have been on Rogaine, the men’s version, for the past year. It is definitely helping. I have also incorporated The Ordinary serum for hair density in the am. I tried Nizerol but had the worst allergic reaction of my life. Surprisingly not as bad to my scalp but the itch and burn on my neck lasted a week! I now use Viviscal shampoo and conditioner and they are making my hair look fuller. I now have long silver curls that I am always getting compliments on.

I have used generic minoxidil through Walmart for a year now. I use the liquid twice a day but I also wash my hair every day. Yes it took about four months before I saw results but I could not be more pleased with how much thicker my hair is now. I will never stop using this product!
Thank you so much for this video. I have been now for approximately 2 years on minoxidil pills. I will never stop! The first 3 to 6 were really frightening. I thought I’d go bald. I've been using pumpkinseed oil mixed with doterra rosemary and peppermint essential oils and ive seen a lot of growth 🙌 And sometimes i will rub coffee on my scalp. Caffiene stimulates hair follicles
Rosemary with peppermint made me shed definitely less. I don't know if it's genuinely those oils or something else that stopped it without me knowing, but my hair did stop falling out so much after I started using those.
Holy moly! And I thought my recent years were hard (escaping abusive relationship, battling mental health; depression, anxiety, PTSD) personal health problems, moving twice, starting a new relationship that finally is great, having covid once, having shingles once, my mum battling with cancer (chemo 5 times, 4 major surgeries), starting new job (dementia nursing home) .. okey, maybe it's even 😂
Thank you for another great video!!!! ❤I saw a video 8 months ago and left a long comment. I was "new" to this whole hairloss topic and I have to say, not much has changed and I'll probably now start oral Minoxidil, even though I really didn't want to initially. The last hair clinic I went to said they'd put me on Minoxidil and something else and 25 sessions of laser therapy. That was were the selling part started again (if you buy now, you safe 900€ and only pay 2000€ but you have to sign until tomorrow!) and I lost all my trust. I read they gave patients free upgrades or extras in return for 5* reviews written in front of them and I think, if they really helped people, they wouldn't need to do that. It's probably the Minoxidil that does the trick and not the expensive laser sessions. I'm now thinking of rather buying the iRestore laser helmet device instead and would love to know what you think about it, as it is really expensive. If you or anyone else here has experience, please share 🙏
New subscriber here. Hi Dr Idriss! I just found you & was impressed with your honesty in generously sharing your stress struggles right off the bat. I used to think stress had no effect on hair loss until it happened to a friend - who lost a 3" diameter chunk of hair through shedding after she began running long distance (physical stress). THEN I suffered my own all over (handfuls of hair) shedding after a period of too much cardio AND not eating enough protein/calories (physical stress). AND unfortunately, during mental stress, it can feedback loop to physical stress due to not really eating well, sleeping well, etc. SO... that's another consideration. THANK YOU for such an informative video.

This is what I took and take when so much of my hair fell out with stress also. Vitamin D 4000 iu, zinc, biotin 5000, magnesium, vitamin k2, Organic Castor oil rubbed into scalp with a carrier oil like organic almond oil. I also use miele drops on the scalp. I use a scalp massage when I condition the hair. I use a shampoo purifier once a week. Other than that I shampoo twice and condition. Oil comes out easily. I also try and stick to good nutrition. I get it cut every 3 months as it is so long, The thickness after 9 months is not quite there yet but there is a massive improvement. You would never know that I had lost so much hair. Thank God. I was nearly going to shave my head and start again. Be consistent and pray.
Early this year I was losing a ton of hair. After a blood test the doctor decided to give me B12 and Vitamin D supplements. A month after starting my hair loss almost disappeared and it was like that for another 4 months. Around a month after the treatment was over I starting losing a lot of hair and it's still pretty bad. I've used minoxidil years ago and it's really good. I might to back on it, despite hating how sticky my hair gets.

Sebitar with salicylic acid has been a godsend for me. For years my hair had been falling out in handfuls, every time I washed my hair my shower wall was plastered with big clumps. My scalp was always itchy except for the day I washed it, second day my scalp would start developing like a tacky substance and the itching would begin. After years and years of trying various things (and doctors being disinterested) I tried sebitar and it provided immense relief even the first time I used it. It's a shampoo and conditioner with not just pine tar but also salicylic acid. it has completely stopped the itch and the hair loss, and my hair is thickening back up. For anyone who might want to try it you can buy it from pharmacies over the counter in Australia but hopefully it's available in other countries too.

❤❤❤ thank you for sharing your tips!
Curious to know about your age and how often you massage your scalp?

U r the most honest and true dermatologist I have ever seen such a informative video this is... Thank you so much
Thank you so much ❤
I'm watching this video right in time,in the middle of my stress hair loss and all the drama that it brings.
Same
When it started for me I didn’t even want to go to a salon.
Which brand?
Can you please tell us the brand?
Verisol collagen powder? Where do you buy it?
Is Verisoll Collagen superior to other Collagen ?
If so, what's in it that males it a better product ?
Thanks

Kerastase leave in heat protectant is hands down the best. I’m a hairdresser for 13+ years and switched over to be a nurse and now a nurse practitioner for the last year. So you’re speaking my lingo in regards to art and science. Give it a try you won’t regret it. There’s an orange one and a green one. Orange is more hydrating and the green is more for protein and breakage. The product is specifically called thermique
I tired Kerastase shampoo and lost loads of hair with it. Many people have had similar problems with Kerastase.
Would the Thermique benefit me if I never heat style or blow dry? Thanks 💙
Careful, that is a very high level. Too much pro hormone D (it is not a vitamin) is harmful.
Thank you dr Idriss for not only great tips! (always!), but also being honest about your own journey! You're the real deal!🌸

Please take care that’s an awful lot of stress for one person ❤

Thanks so much for the info Doc!! For a woman hair is so important it’s your glory
I asked ChatGTP (haha) for best products for type 1A, fine, high-porosity hair & it gave me some good weekly mask recommendations!
are you still using the shampoo and serum you mentioned and how is it going please update us
@ I’m still using all of it. My hair is growing back and density is coming back. It’s a long process because I have years of damage to repair due to coloring & contracting Covid twice in the past few years.
Yes!!!! Best thing I have ever used!

I feel so seen when you greet us as little nerds 😂
I’m 54 been on hrt for the last year and half but I can see my hair starting to thin… so the timing of this is great thank you!
I am 57 and about to start HRT/ do you think your hair is thinning from the HRT?
@@annem5890 no not at all - on the contrary I think without it I might be seeing more thinning - although I’m not a doctor, that’s just an educated guess! I have a family history of hair thinning, and as someone with quite fine curly hair anyway, always had those little baby hairs at my temples.. I just see those areas broadening a little. I’ve been taking collagen supplements and nutrifol for the last month so I’m going to add the anti dandruff shampoo and see if that makes a difference. I think we have to be prepared to wait at least 3 months before seeing a difference. If I don’t see an improvement I will maybe add minoxidil
I’m happy for you to be starting hrt - it was a game changer for me!

I hope your family stay safe and peace will come with no terror 🙏🙏🙏
Mixed reasons for hair loss here as well. Oral minoxidil helped me as well. Took 6 months to notice a change. I’ve added oral finasteride now as well because I still have sparse frontal loss. Still waiting for that to improve. I take b12 , D , and iron. Covid infections more times than I can count have also taken their toll. Plus menopause…yay.
Best wishes to you and everyone with hair loss. It’s a bummer.
Women can take finasteride?
Hi how many mg's of oral minoxidil?

God Bless you and thank you for the hard work you put into these videos ❤ your an Inspiration that women can do it all!!! I’m coming to see you soon for my dermatologist needs. Besos 😘
Also minoxidil can have alcohol which leads to drying and irritation. There’s some brands that don’t have it!! Don’t give up on finding one that works for you
Exercise increses blood flow. My hair grew out once i starting working out last year.
Thanks. I have lost hair from weight-loss surgery in 2020. I now know what you avoid and look forward to other informative talks. BTW, I did not realize the alternative use for minoxidil. Thanks. 😊
One of the best videos. Thank you so much ❤
I hope all is getting better for you!! With regard to hair loss Consideration should be given the laser therapy - it can be expensive but does have benefits.
I saw the cyperus oil shorts, and I thought huh, that`s very interesting, I would love to hear more science data, I look forward to an update on this, and then (and then!) you say possible LABMUFFIN COLLAB?!? 👀I`m always already up and awake and catch these on Saturday morning when they drop but believe I am setting a whole alarm for next week!🤞🤞🙏🙏 (I`ll be watching regardless, and if your schdules don`t gel in time for next week that collab would be worth the wait)
What do you think about ordinary peptide hair serum? Worth trying?
I appreciate you sharing your own experience with thinning hair. I’ve only recently noticed huge gaps of hair loss . I’m going through a stressful time right now….i think that may be contributing to my hair loss. I’ve been using Minoxidil for about 4 weeks, consistently every night. I have an appointment with a dermatologist in November. I’m hoping to get the minoxidil pills. Thank you for your help.
