I want to add this as a former stylist: RINSE YOUR DANG HAIR BETTER. 😂 So many of my clients weren't doing a great job with their shampooing routine. Make sure your hair is fully saturated before applying shampoo. Rinse well, shampoo again. As you rinse, use your fingers to part your hair and massage your scalp. When you lean your head back, the water really only rinses the top of your hair effectively, which is why you need to part your hair to assure you are rinsing your scalp. If you're not rinsing well, you're leaving shampoo, product buildup, whatever in your hair. It only takes a few seconds more and doesn't cost anything. It will make all your products perform better, because your hair will actually be clean!!
I saw somewhere to flip my head over when washing a few years ago, and love that it is mentioned here in the video. I part my hair down the middle then lean my head forward and make more parts, then attack with my shampoo. I rinse the same way- head down and many parts. My scalp and roots are easier to reach and get clean and rinsed. I’ve had so much more volume at the roots and my scalp just feels so much better.
I wash my hair at my kitchen sink because I don’t shower, I like baths. After I apply my shampoo & foam it up, I use a scalp brush to gently scrub my scalp. I have shorter hair & that works for me. I also NEVER use a hairbrush as that can break the hair. I only use a comb. Stylists always say how healthy my hair Is.❤
Lab Muffin says you don't need to double wash your hair. I'd rather trust a scientist who specialises in hair science over a stylist and a dermatologist (who is a doctor sure but doctors are not chemists)
I used to be so worried every time I brushed my hair-it felt like I was losing way too much. Now, I barely notice any shedding, and my hair feels so much stronger. Such a relief!

Great video for the most part. The information about detangling dry hair doesn't apply to Afro textured hair. Focus on adding a little moisture, so that hair is damp (but not soaking wet). Also add a detangling product. This reduces the risk of damage and breakage. Dry detangling is fine for looser textures of hair. Also, few people with afro-textured hair will use this type of hair brush. Focus on using wide toothed combs, fingers, and brushes with widely spaced teeth that are suitable for kinky/coily hair.
Had my Mason Pearson boar bristle brush for more than 30 years. As someone who has thick somewhat coarse hair that was waist length for much of my life (almost 60) it has been fabulous. Love it. Price per use makes it a very inexpensive purchase in the long term. Growing up my mum would apply medicinal grade olive oil to my hair. Left it overnight in a shower cap with a towel wrapped around my head & then washed as usual the next morning. Remember my hairdresser saying I had hardly any split ends.

Incorporating a clarifying shampoo once a week has been incredible for volume at my roots! As someone with thicker, long hair I swear by Moroccan Oil, mid shaft to ends of my hair after every shower. Plus, heat protectant spray before I use any kind of heat (hairdryer, curling iron, flat iron, dryer brush, etc.)

I've been using 3 different bond building lines, and they've transformed my highlighted hair! I love the L'Oréal Ever Pure, liasion, or dove! I use the ogx coconut milk serum as my hair is fine, and it's thinner than the one in your video, so it's easier to get out of my hair. I'll use it after my leave in in rotation with olaplex no. 7.
I leveled up recently by putting my shampoo into a squirt bottle (dollar store sauce bottle) to get it directly onto my scalp. I don't know why shampoo bottles aren't made that way... it's been a game changer!! I also ordered happy head scalp serum & a derma stamp so I'm super excited to get started!! I've lived with hair loss for 25 years & finally decided to do something about it. ❤
I have long, naturally wavy hair that gets dry fairly easy (especially in the winter) and I love the ogx coconut oil! I normally buy the spray that is a little lighter and spray on my hair when it’s wet, right after washing and conditioning it. It makes my hair feel softer and shinier and it also smells super good which is just another bonus 😂
I have very fine, thin hair and Epres works the best for me. Their shampoo and conditioner are great too. I don't color or heat style my hair, but it's very long and tangles easily and the Epres line is the only one that stops that from happening. It's also very light weight and the conditioner can double as a leave-in.
3 months on oral minoxidil and 5 wks on HRT (Estradiol & Progesterone) and no hair changes or improvements yet. 🤷🏻♀️ Patiently waiting…..had major shed these 3 months. Hopefully that stops soon. 47 and perimenopausal is a BeeOtch!
I think it will take 6 months to notice a difference. I too use oral minoxidil and red light therapy. It took 6 months for me to notice hair growth. But what I did notice in 3 months was my hair wasn’t falling out as much.
@@guyelswambeekhoeve5882 I say you aren’t going to get any by now. Although you may not get new hair growth but it maybe keeping the hair you have from falling out.
I feel for you! So distressing, it will grow back, mine took 6 months, I'm on HRT and oral minoxidil too. Also be sure to eat plenty of protein too, wish you well.
Yes! Head and Shoulders is a holy trail for me. Cleans my scalp really well and I feel it colonized my hair also. Follow up with hair masks a few times a week and daily conditioning. :-)
I’ve added tretinoin to my scalp once a week for hair growth in addition to topical minoxidil. Brought my growth to another level. It’s not huge but after using minoxidil for two years, I started having a lot of shedding again, and the tretinoin seemed to get me out of it and back to hair growth and very limited shedding. I believe there’s some decent data behind this.
My teenage son just came in and said you look like you could be Trevor Lawrence's sister. Beautiful. Just found your videos and I'm learning a lot! Thanks
Also, minoxidil comes in the tablet form which is much easier to handle. And people looking for a holy grail exfoliating shampoo should try Dermal Therapy Scalp Relief. It works great and it's very gentle.
If you can't afford to purchase a red light cap/helmet (who has an extra almost USD$2000 to spend on your hair these days???), and you already have a red light face mask, try putting your mask on your head. I do it everyday and, so far, it seems to be working! 😊
I've always wondered if this works! I have the Omnilux face mask, but I've started putting it on my head a couple times per week. Too soon to tell if it's working (and I definitely look goofy, lol!)...but to your point: I already own it and I do not have any extra for a helmet, so it's way cheaper!
I love this idea instead of spending so much $$$ for an additional gadget. I have a panel and use it on everything. I can't get it as close on my scalp as with a helmet or the mask though.
Does it work the other way around? lol. I already have a red light cap for the hair, can I use it on my face if I put some patches to protect may eyes? :))
Thanks Dr. Sam for another great video! As I’m a Budgetista, I’ve been using the Dove Bond Strength shampoo and the Bond Strength Mask. Not crazy about the scent, but love the results. I also like Elizavecca Cer-100 which you can get on-line. My dupe for the pricey MP hair brush is either the ION (from Sally) or the Denman which I have in a smaller size. 2025 Hair Goals!
I love oiling my hair, but when I do I feel like it makes more hair fall out that day:( I still do it because I hear it's good for overall health of hair. Thanks for another great video!
I recently started using the Bumble and Bumble Ultra Rich Hyaluronic Treatment Lotion on my dry ends. I really like it. I’ve since added the B&B Bond Shampoo and Conditioner.
This is why I love you so much. Always top quality content informing us of what we actually need and WHY we need it! Was hoping you would do one for hair too, so I was so excited to see you posted this lol. 😭💕 I have been using bond treatments recently and the difference is HUGE, especially as someone with kinky hair with breakage. I am so shocked I have never heard of Epres though! It looks so interesting and super convenient! Definitely will be trying that one out! Thanks so so much!
Even though I have fine thin bleached hair, any “bond” or “protein” or “citric acid” just makes my hair so brittle- even when used infrequently. I need some options when bond repair just doesn’t play well with hair. I’ve been searching for who the “Abbey Yung but no protein” guru is. TY for your content!
Could still do her coconut oil hack. Also some of the bond repair treatments don't actually use protein, but maybe it's both protein and protein-less bond repair things your hair takes issue with.
I love using a pre-wash oil treatment. The smell of coconut gives me a headache, so I use the ROZ Willow Glen Treatment Oil. It smells so good and has such a luxurious feel, making my hair much softer and shinier.
Hello, would you consider posting a video about changes associated with long term prednisone use? I have noticed many changes in my skin and hair. I am a physician and knew about some of the side effects, but was not aware of the multiple possible dermatological side effects.
That’s a great idea for a video! I’ve been on prednisone over 6 years due to chemo, and will be on it for the rest of my life. Anything that will help hair or skin would be much appreciated! I really appreciated this video also. Thanks!
Happy New Year Dr. Ellis. I’ve recently watched a video by a guy who has a salon in Florida. He has that the shampoo from drugstore is not the same quality like say Oribe. So I’ve recently bought Oribe Alchemy which contains hyaluronic acid complex. It cleans in a way I can’t describe compared to stuff from CVS and the conditioner it’s smooth I can brush my hair in the shower. The smell is nice and luxurious, see it how we have one head in our life I think it’s important to use quality products. Yes ok expensive but I love it the clean and experience I get I can’t explain. I will never buy anything from CVS or BJs ever again.
JVN Hair (Jonathan Van Ness’s line) just came out with a Rapid Repair Bond Gloss treatment. It’s pretty easy to use. You shampoo and condition your hair, the put the treatment on for 60 seconds and rinse it out. It does feel much better afterwards.
I really like Mizani Wonder Crown Scalp Foaming Pre Cleanse. You really feel the difference of your scalp being super clean. I also shampoo 3 times then deep condition. I keep my hair in protective styles for 2/3wks at a time and oil my scalp in between so a pre cleanse and multiple shampooing works for my hair. I trim my ends between styles and have seen progress on my hair retention journey.
I've used epres and got great results however, when spraying my hair with the properly prepared solution, the odor really bothered me and even did something to my throat while spraying. I literally had to hold my breath because even breathing through my nose caused this reaction. I don't use it anymore because of that but definitely enjoyed the results it gave. Anyone else have this experience?
About bonnets: I personally wish I’d gotten the type that ties around your head and not the elastic band. Your mileage may vary, but I have to keep tightening the elastic so I don’t wake up with it off. And when I do have to tighten it, I wake up with lines on my forehead!
I have yet to find a hair oil better than Oribe Gold Lust. It's GOATED. Now it is pricey, but in my opinion, so worth it. I'm curious to try Virtue's hair oil now.
I use a scalp scrubber in the shower and my dermatologist suggested using pumpkin seed oil capsules! Also have been using the Bondi Boost Hair Growth line and I love all the products. They’re quite effective.
Hi Dr Ellis, again an amazing and informative video! I used to use the Oribe hair oil but switched to the Oribe moisturizing Cream. So much lighter, but more hydrating and that Oribe fragrance…..!
I was hoping you'd talk about hair masks. I really like hair masks. There's a really good one from lador called perfect hair fill up or something like that. It makes your hair feel so strong and so soft but it's pricey and you have to leave it on for 15-20 minutes. You only need to use it once a week though. There's another hair mask by Iden called the propolis hair mask. Propolis has been shown to stimulate hair growth. I try to use it twice a week but I'm on a tight budget now so I can't afford to get the big pump size that I want to use twice a week. I would use it on my scalp. It cost less than the first one and you only have to leave it on your hair for 5 minutes. It also makes your hair feel really soft and strong.
I am post-menopause and my hair still luckily looks thick and healthy. I've started using Monxidil and Nutrafol to be proactive. I am also looking into a red LED product.
Love the hair care videos to help sort through all the products available. Would appreciate more on hair growth products (serum, red light etc) to help with purchase decisions. Have you considered a Prequel hair line of products?
I love adding a drop or two of essential oil to my conditioner. It really smooths out my hair, and I have an auto immune thyroid issue which makes my hair frizzy. I started minoxidil 3 months ago, I have finally turned the corner on that, and my hair is staying on my head instead of going down the drain. I also have a laser helmet .... the jury is still out on that one. I think all it does is make my hair grow faster. :O/ Thank you for your videos, I love them!
Hi thank you for your great content! I noticed that the shape of your face has changed considerably in the last year. In particular your jawline. You always look great but I like the new look even more. Would you be so kind as to reveal what procedures helped you achieve this new look?
I have fine thinning hair and I use a detox scalp serum from vegamour. It’s amazing! non dying but it has made a huge difference…I feel like my scalp is less oily throughout the week when I use it!😊
I have bottom-of-my-butt length hair and periodically struggle with scalp irritation and excessive hair fall. During those times, I have my thyroid checked and it's usually sluggish. So, CHECK YOUR THYROID FUNCTION REGULARLY!
I use a natural shampoo and no conditioner. After i towel dry my hair and its about 70% dry i add some oils to the ends and then rub it through. I bleach and dye my hair regularly but dont need expensive products.
A rx of very low dose oral minoxidil has helped my hair growth tremendously. Surprised you didn’t mention it. (Topical minoxidil is messy and I just hated it)
I've seen a couple derm channels, who are taking oral minoxidil themselves. One derm did say she has to shave to control the facial hair she's getting.
I’m surprised nobody is talking about Oshima Tsubaki Camellia Oil. It can be used for scalp, hair, face and body. It’s 100% Camellia oil and feels amazing 🌺
Thank you Dr. Sam for the informative tips. Can I use Nizoral shampoo each time I wash my hair even if my hair doesn’t have dandruff or problems in general?
Some good advice for people with straight hair, but not that universal. When it comes to brushing curly or wavy hair, it's gonna be much easier to brush it wet or even just slightly wet with a detangling spray or water from a spray bottle, and that's gonna cause less damage than trying to take a brush or comb through dry curls. From personal experience, if you have long wavy hair that you wear straight, it's still easier to brush it when it's a bit damp. That bore bristle brush is obviously also strictly for straight hair. I'm also wondering about the hygiene aspects of it, because it would surely trap oils from the scalp and skin flakes and then how well can you wash it and how well does it dry (in some climates mould is a big concern).
The only products that have helped with my scalp health, other than double washing, is the hairitage by mindy scalp scrub, rice water rinse, and ACV rinse.
Hi Dr. Ellis. I have been using Olaplex every wash for many months now and Olaplex bond line was working wonderfully for me. Just recently I have been experiencing a lot of hair loss. And I mean a lot. I just turned 48. I am sort of known for my hair. I have long, waivy, voluminous hair. Now my hair is wiry, dry, and tangles excessively in the shower. I have heard that using Olaplex for a long time every wash can backfire. Is that true, or do you think something else is going on? I really appreciate any help you can provide. Love your channel and your skincare products.
Wonderful video as always Dr. Ellis. Thanks so much for your helpful tips! Am wondering how you incorporate NIZORAL into your hair wash routine - ie, every shampoo, once a month etc.? I do not have dandruff but do have an itchy scalp so am hopeful it might be helpful for that issue. TSM! 🙂
Thank you!! 🙏🏼 for an itchy scalp I recommend doing it with every wash until the scalp feels better and then space out from there. At least 2x a week to start though!
How many times per week would you need to use Nizoral to be effective for hair loss(mostly) & light dandruff? I know it's relatively harsh and not great for color, but supposed to be effective so I'd love to know. Thanks, great info.
@@DrSamEllis Thank you so much for the reply - just started using minox as well - I thought Nizoral would be an added bonus. Appreciate the reply and really helpful videos. thx

And someone who chose to learn about my hair even though I went to a stylist since I was 3 years old there is one thing that I always notice about women. Most women do not know what type of hair they have whether it's low porosity high porosity they don't even know what products really work on their hair they trust their style is so much that they don't do anything to their hair at home. You have to remove the fear of cutting hair stop dying hair changing products before you will see a difference You have to use a product long enough to see what it will do changing up because a new trend on TikTok is not going to help you and this is from 48-year-old Gen X that y'all know in the '90s hair was all kinds of ways. And 48 years old I now have a healthy healthy scalp healthy hair you have to do a deep moisturizer on those ends and you got to leave it in there and products can't be expensive but you are worth it Just a little bit like stop with the $1.99 shampoos stop it

These products are nice for sure but prices are out of reach for the majority . We have extremely hard water and the struggle to find products that work and have a real price point is trying .
I noticed the biggest difference in my hair was improvement in my nutrition (75 - 100 gm protein a day) & version collagen. Plus - good shampoo & conditioner. ☺
Hi Dr. Ellis - could you provide any insight on high frequency wands/brushes for hair growth? I’ve recently been seeing ads/videos about them but haven’t found any content yet from dermatologists confirming that these are effective. In addition, what are your thoughts on whether using special shower heads that filter out minerals are good for hair health?
There is a large percentage of people that get edema when using oral minoxidil. So be mindful of this. If you experience swelling, discontinuation is necessary. And see your doctor for a diuretic. Happened to me and two friends. Not worth it to me. Foam minoxidil is not messy

Ooh give it at least 6 months! Hair changes are sooo slow but worth the wait!
3 years on Minoxidil. No changes/ improvement so far😢.
Would love more drugstore haircare recommendations! I do love the OGX oil and have been using Head and Shoulders shampoo lately.
Noted!
Pantene Volume shampoo and conditioner are amazing! They clean my hair really well and leave it soft. I love it!
I love Aveeno acv line
Yes! Head and Shoulders is a holy trail for me. Cleans my scalp really well and I feel it colonized my hair also. Follow up with hair masks a few times a week and daily conditioning. :-)
Some swaps I've seen for pricey hair products are: kerastase elixir ultime hydrating hair oil - garnier fructis sleek and shine moroccan sleek smoothing oil; olaplex #3 - elizavecca cer 100 collagen coating hair protein treatment; redken acidic bonding concentrate leave-in treatment - l'oreal everpure bond repair concentrate; morrocanoil treatment - ogx renewing + argan oil of morocco penetrating hair oil treatment. For hair brushes, gimme beauty has brushes for different hair thicknesses.
Thanks
Thank you for the information, it was very helpful. I enjoyed your videos😊
Also, minoxidil comes in the tablet form which is much easier to handle. And people looking for a holy grail exfoliating shampoo should try Dermal Therapy Scalp Relief. It works great and it's very gentle.
I use a long hair bonnet from Lily silk. When I wake up my hair is shiny and not frizzy, and brushing it is super easy ❤
I do the same. Neck deck on hands and belly, too. 😊
I love this idea instead of spending so much $$$ for an additional gadget. I have a panel and use it on everything. I can't get it as close on my scalp as with a helmet or the mask though.
Never thought about doing that! Thanks!
I have been using bond treatments recently and the difference is HUGE, especially as someone with kinky hair with breakage. I am so shocked I have never heard of Epres though! It looks so interesting and super convenient! Definitely will be trying that one out! Thanks so so much!
Dry brushing is a luxury for straight hair only. Curly hair needs water to avoid major frizz. I use a wet brush and treat it gently.
You’re a gift. So intelligent and so genuine. Thank you & so glad I found you! 🥰
Thank you! Great video! What about hair color? Especially for ageing hair
Same here! Fine, lightly bleached hair and Abbey Yung’s advice and product recommendations wrecked my hair..
I love using a pre-wash oil treatment. The smell of coconut gives me a headache, so I use the ROZ Willow Glen Treatment Oil. It smells so good and has such a luxurious feel, making my hair much softer and shinier.
Will you do a whole body skin care video? Please!
I believe she already has one.
Thanks!
I double up as well! The K18 in the shower and the Living Proof Bond Builder after. Both are wonderful.
Do you rinse out the K18 in th shower?
@sonjaforrester9255 I do! I just make sure to wait the 4 minutes, then I rinse and condition like normal.
I will never buy
anything from CVS or BJs ever again.
I do love Oribe products so much! Worth the investment if you’re noticing that kind of difference!
How could I get more volume for my fine hair besides mousse.🇨🇦🙋♀️🙂
Do you take the pumpkin seed orally or put it on your hair topically?
@ oral supplements!
@@momolovessam awesome. Thank you. I just bought some and about to start taking them as well. Hopefully you're seeing results ☺️
Yes to double cleansing! That has been my game-changer.
Yasss 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Would love recommednations for swimmers! My daughter swims 5-6 times a week and her hair just suffers even with quality shapoos and treatments.
Your videos are consistently fantastic! 🎉
Thanks for these hair tips!
I am post-menopause and my hair still luckily looks thick and healthy. I've started using Monxidil and Nutrafol to be proactive. I am also looking into a red LED product.
Thank you your videos are always so informative and helpful
Love the hair care videos to help sort through all the products available. Would appreciate more on hair growth products (serum, red light etc) to help with purchase decisions. Have you considered a Prequel hair line of products?
She did a video a few months ago on hair growth products and she's definitely talked about LED helmets in hair videos.
K 18 is amazing!
Thank you!
This was very helpful!
I will start combing by wet hair from the bottom upwards starting tomorrow!
Yay!
Thank you for your videos, I love them!
Agree! And your iron levels when you have your period!
I use a natural shampoo and no conditioner.
After i towel dry my hair and its about 70% dry i add some oils to the ends and then rub it through.
I bleach and dye my hair regularly but dont need expensive products.
Happy new year ma'am
Ty for this most helpful video 😊
What are your thoughts on shower filters? Are they worth the hype?
So good, many thanks!
A rx of very low dose oral minoxidil has helped my hair growth tremendously. Surprised you didn’t mention it. (Topical minoxidil is messy and I just hated it)
She's talked about that in her videos on hair growth.
Side effects are difficult with oral minoxidil
I've seen a couple derm channels, who are taking oral minoxidil themselves. One derm did say she has to shave to control the facial hair she's getting.
@@db-gb5xi sure but people should at least try…because there are people like me who have zero side affects.
Thanks for such great tips! What about high frequency wand? Thanks again!
Hi! Happy new year and thanks for the helpful video!
I’m curious, what puts coconut oil above jojoba?
This might sound obvious but my hair seems thicker now that I’ve diagnosed my celiac disease - I’m no longer malnourished!
I’m surprised nobody is talking about Oshima Tsubaki Camellia Oil. It can be used for scalp, hair, face and body. It’s 100% Camellia oil and feels amazing 🌺
I've heard Dr. Jenny Liu talk about the Shiseido tsubaki hair oil.
I tried the Oribe products. Love it!
Happy New Year! Can I wash my hair with your Gleanser? And, will scalp and hair treatments be coming out?
Happy new year! I wouldn’t recommend using it as a shampoo - it’s too gentle to remove some of the heavier buildup that can accumulate on hair.
OGX tests on animals. Please offer an alternative. Cats and dogs shouldn’t be tortured so we can have shiny hair.
Are bonding treatments actually
Helpful for people who really don’t mess with their hair much? I mean if it’s pretty healthy to begin with?
Are growth factors beneficial for hair growth?
The only products that have helped with my scalp health, other than double washing, is the hairitage by mindy scalp scrub, rice water rinse, and ACV rinse.
Affordable bonding treatments?
Hi Dr.
Do you have a video on hair thinning treatments
Great video!! I’m so glad I found your channel
Lol love this. Most of the same stuff Abbey Yung uses and suggests.. using things completely turned my hair around
TSM Dr. Ellis! 🙂
Please ship Prequel to Europe ❤
How many times per week would you need to use Nizoral to be effective for hair loss(mostly) & light dandruff? I know it's relatively harsh and not great for color, but supposed to be effective so I'd love to know. Thanks, great info.
I’d use it at least 2x per week! But if that’s an issue for color, minoxidil will certainly move the needle to a greater extent!
@@DrSamEllis Thank you so much for the reply - just started using minox as well - I thought Nizoral would be an added bonus. Appreciate the reply and really helpful videos. thx
Good evening, Dr Ellis. As a med student is there any way I can contact you to get advice on getting into dermatology? Love your videos by the way, God bless you 💕
And someone who chose to learn about my hair even though I went to a stylist since I was 3 years old there is one thing that I always notice about women. And 48 years old I now have a healthy healthy scalp healthy hair you have to do a deep moisturizer on those ends and you got to leave it in there and products can't be expensive but you are worth it Just a little bit like stop with the $1.99 shampoos stop it
Thanks for your recommendations. I've been losing so much hair, I figured it out just now , that I was listening your video. I'll always comb my hair, when is really wet.
It's scary how much hair I pull. I'm still wondering if this is the reazon?? Please help me.
These products are nice for sure but prices are out of reach for the majority . We have extremely hard water and the struggle to find products that work and have a real price point is trying .
How often do you wasch your hair?
How often should we brush our hair? Thank you!
I noticed the biggest difference in my hair was improvement in my nutrition (75 - 100 gm protein a day) & version collagen. Plus - good shampoo & conditioner. ☺
🙌🏼🙌🏼 I’m trying to up my protein intake this year!
I used K18 when it first came on the market. Hated it. Made my hair like straw.
Wait 4 minutes then condition as usual - it makes a HUGE difference!
I did too but followed it up with a leave in conditioner and saw benefits after about 2 weeks
