As a gynecologist, I really appreciate your comments about vaginal hygiene. I have seen sooo many women who think they have yeast infections, and instead their itching is due to overcleaning. Many fall prey to the hyped up marketing around feminine washes, or they will say "but it is natural!" Doesn't matter, the genital skin is very sensitive to any type of cleaning agent, especially if it is scented, natural or not. Thank you as always for your excellent content!

Love these tips so much, however I do have a sensitive topic question…
So, I’ve never met any woman who only used warm water to cleanse their vulva. 🤷🏻‍♀️ To me, that sounds like a rinse & not an actual cleanse. Could this be why so many women are self conscious of their natural scent, because they’re rinsing & not using a gentle cleanser?
The vagina is self cleansing, but the vulva is not and it consists of sweat glands, hair that can retain order, labia folds, & so on. I’m just curious about why cleansing is not the base line recommendation.
Thank you! I love your educational videos so much & appreciate all this free information from a certified derm. 🫶🏼

Oh my! When I had bad acne as a teen. We were told to scrub, scrub, scrub our faces. In fact, we were told to use a Buff Puff to scrub our faces at least twice a day. I remember how sore my face was. I am sure that it only made my acne worse and compromised my skin barrier. I was made to feel as if my acne was caused by me being dirty. Nobody took better care of their skin (at least with the products that we had and how we were told to use them). It was not until I was an adult and Retin A came along that I was actually helped. The dermatologist told me that I didn't need to be so aggressive with skin care. Just wash gently and use the Retin A. I will forever be thankful for that.

IPL for brown spots worked to remove my brown spots but also resulted in facial hair growth everywhere, including my entire forehead. The plastic surgeon who performed the IPL told me that the heat and light from IPL can, in some cases, cause unwanted hair growth, especially in Hispanics. I then had to spend thousands to have the hair removed with a different laser. I was not warned beforehand that this could be a side effect of IPL.

Not a proponent of DIY skincare but while leaving in various parts of Asia, I learnt to do a mask with finely milled rice flour + a pinch or turmeric + a bit of yogurt + a bit of honey. apply let it dry slightly and wash off in a gentle exfoliating motion. Even with rosacea and psoriasis, my skin loves it and feels so soft and refreshed. It actually really helps my psoriasis flare ups. My understanding is that Turmeric and honey help with inflammation and the lactic acid in yogurt or kefir is mildly exfoliation while helping replenish good bacteria on the skin.

Honestly Dr Sam, some of the best advice I’ve ever heard from you is to get rid of your magnifying mirrors because they do not reflect how close people are to your face normally, and if they are that close that they might be so excited that they aren’t even concerned about your skin!😂❤

Hydrocolloid patches have been used in a competitive bench (aka the control of the experiment.) In a clinical split face study of 49 subjects who had mild to moderate acne applied Hydrocolloid against acne lesions. The subjects used them for 11 days and it took them 6 days to see statistically significant difference. By the 11th day, %.6 of this group had recovered from their acne lesion. When you really think about it, 11 days is about average time that an acne lesion stays present for. I value this clinical because they tracked the mean diameter, the erythema score, and the mean lightness score. Conclusively, it appears that visually it might help but in terms of actually eliminating the breakout it seems unlikely. I believe people really enjoy them most because they like seeing that white build up on them after removing from skin vs how they an actually perform. It’s hard for me to believe that based on this information, hydrocolloid patches perform better than benzoyl peroxide used as a spot treatment which is a god sent for when I have a closed comedome.

Good video! Ive used a single-use diy egg mask on an inflamed cystic pimple & it calmed it down tremendously (shrunk it too)! So,, wondering if there are any egg masks available on the market??

I like the Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Cream for gentle exfoliation. The instructions say to gently press into the skin and not scrub. Really nice and gentle.

Hi Dr Sam, is it okay to apply one sunscreen all over my face except for my eye area where i apply a different sunscreen? I want to use a sunscreen that has super high UVA protection, but all of the ones I have tried sting my eyes or make them red. Does this count as mixing sunscreens?

I have sensitive eyes, so chemical sunscreens tend to hurt them. I use chemical sunscreen on my face and mineral sunscreen around my eyes. While I don't try to overlap, largely to save product, is it still mixing (and therefore a bad idea) to use chemical and mineral sunscreens in this way?

OoOoo I also have a pouch that I move from purse to purse. I didn’t realize your office is in Danville (I’m in SF). Do you perform PRP’s at your office for alopecia?!? Update: Nevermind! Just saw that you do! :] yay!

When hiking, I would put an Anthelios chemical sunscreen, let it sit a bit, and then put a CC Cream SPF 50++++, with a zinc oxide base, on top for added protection. It that ok?

Regarding #7, it doesn't include applying two different layers of sunscreen products, right? Sometimes, I apply a layer of colorless sunscreen first, followed by a tinted sunscreen (or makeup products claiming SPF protection). Could you clarify this for me? Thank you.

You still need to be applying 1/4 tsp of sunscreen to your face/neck. Makeup w/spf is not reliable unless you are using the correct dosage.
As far as layering sunscreens, yes, you absolutely can! Apply the first layer and wait 2-3 minutes, and then apply the second layer. Then, you can apply makeup. Whatever spf is in, that is just a bonus 😊
