The Harley Davidson is one the oldest brand in the auto motive landscape; they have witnesses pretty much every single change in the world of automotive. But some of their product is still considered as a bit ancient for today’s standard. That because they build their motorcycle with a certain set of values which they still hold on to dearly even to this day. Harley’s this obsession towards their heritage is one of the reason why the big Harley V-Twins have the Dry sump system.

"Heritage" being the reason H-D uses dry-sump lubrication? Nope. Roller bearings are used throughout H-D engines and are the reason H-D uses dry-sump lubrication. Roller bearings depend on oil flow to both lubricate and carry heat away from the connecting rods. Roller bearing crankshafts do not need oil pressures of 30+psi, but do need oil flow in quarts per minute. H-D's have about 15 psi oil pressure, but many quarts-per-minute of oil flow. The oil tank makes high-flow pumps possible by the tanks capacity and de-aerates and cools the H-D's oil.
The dry-sump oil system is better suited to deliver the flow needed by roller bearings, than the single oil pump as used in wet sump engines with their plain bearings where oil pressure is more important than oil flow. Most racing engines today use a dry-sump oil system, even if the engine is a plain-bearing type, because a dry-sump systems can easily be piped with both oil coolers and filters. Oil doesn't just lubricate, it can also cool internal moving parts. Exactly what a dry-sump does.
