I’ve recently found this channel and have started incorporating these practices into my normal riding. It’s been super helpful at building a bit of confidence for someone who can’t flatfoot my bike. Now I need to take it the next level and start practicing in the evenings with cones in an empty parking lot.
Thank you Robert! I’m a teacher/musician living in China and recently bought a newer bike (‘19 Suzuki GW250). It’s tiny compared what you ride but for me at 5’6 and 150lbs it’s fairly heavy and not the smallest bike. I found your channel and have been practicing with your voice in my head - while I’m in the middle of a u-turn I can hear you yelling “keep the rpm’s up! , stay in the friction zone!, rear brake!” and it always works! I’m going to make an audio recording for my practice sessions and take it with me. Soon my Chinese friends will be learning to be the bosses of their motorcycles too. I’m thankful for people like you and I’m going to pay it forward here. Be safe and continually blessed. 🙏🏼
Thank you. Very handy and practical. I'm a lifelong rider, and have taught the confidence course in the USAF...still, it's always, always good to review. Thank you!
my favorite way to park my bike is at a truck stop right up against an idling truck while the driver's asleep. i know no one will mess with my bike that way. a couple of my bike's have gotten run over that way but i still believe in the practice. on a serious note isnt it just easier if you have two spots open just to pull in to spot one ,u turn into spot two? then you only have to back up about 8 inches.

Be careful if you follow the curb line in wet parking lots. I downed my ZX14r in a mist covered parking lot because the space I chose to turn and park in had an unseen hazard waiting for me: diesel fuel. A vehicle with a fuel leak used that space just prior to the light rain that was falling as I pulled in. Halfway through my turn at approximately 2-3mph the front tire instantly washed out. I held it up but the combination of a turned front wheel and residual momentum started to strain my left knee excessively so I let it down as easy as possible. End result: Knee - GTG; Ninja - $1500.00 worth of scraped fairings, mirror, lever, grip and pipe.

Just a couple items I would like to comment on. The demo shows the m/c way into the space. He mentioned to park near the front the space, only lightly. One wants to make the m/c visible to vehicles driving down the lane. In the State of California, ( not sure about other states) when parking on the street The rear wheel or fender needs to touch the curb. This law is heavily enforced in the beach cities. So if you're coming to California keep that in mind. If you have skirted fenders, or low saddlebags, might want to think about parking somewhere else .
Your tip of parking a motorcycle in the front of a parking space is the best. Most put there bike in the rear and always worry about someone hitting it
I’ve been riding for 20+ years. Much of it on smaller displacement bikes and I developed some bad habits as well as some techniques not conducive to successively handling a large Harley Davidson bagger. But I would be better at parking a semi than my bike. I had scheduled to work with a local instructor when I purchased my big bagger, and he passed away from COVID. Then our Harley Dealership permanently closed. I felt like Karma had targeted me and won. Then I remembered how accomplished my best friend and husband is as a rider. I didn’t want to share my struggles, but I’ve got to use what I have to succeed. Thanks for your content, because I know nothing I learn is wasted.
If you're on a taller bike like an ADV, you should also look out for gravel, sand, oil and dips at your chosen parking spot. The last thing you want to do is to slip or have your foot grabbing air while backing the bike in.
Hands down the best instructional videos out there. You’ve taught me so much and given me so much confidence in riding. Thank you for your service as well Sir.

New VIPer here, and I have a question that's been burning in my mind since seeing your bike. Do you have/can you do a video going over your light setup? Thanks for all of the great info for new/soon to be riders.
Regardless of whether I'm riding in a group or alone, in a packed parking lot or an empty one, I never park up against the curb. However, I've seen motorcycle clubs pull into a parking lot riding in single file as well as staggered and cruise in just like you did parallel to the curb, but instead of turning, they just stop perpendicular to the painted lines sometimes three or four abreast in each parking spot. Sometimes they do this out of necessity if a parking lot is full, but I've also seen it done as a courtesy which goes a LONG way to presenting a more conscientious and socially acceptable view of motorcycle clubs. Too often bikers and motorcycle clubs come off as owning the road, and nothing says, "Screw you!" like a bunch of bikers taking one spot per bike and making the four wheelers walk a marathon. Something to think about...
@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle When the parking lot is packed already, there's really no other option other than parking perpendicular to the lines if you have a large club. If there's a bike in each spot and one on every line that doubles the capacity, but parking perpendicular easily quadruples the capacity. It also displays a sublime level of courtesy and common sense. A prime example of its efficiency is in noting the difference between an on-track start verses a Le Mans style start. In the former, we see the pack take off practically as a solid mass while the starts that begin with the bikes parked off to the side is a confused mess often accompanied by collisions. I can see how practicing improves the likelihood of something more ordered and coordinated, but for those clubs that are in the habit of having a few snorts at the bar before hitting their next stop, it might not make that much difference. I prefer the look because it reminds me of those tight formations flown by the Blue Angels. Then again, for those who like to admire shiny custom motorcycles it makes it difficult to gain access to those bikes in the middle of the pack. If two clubs show up at the bar simultaneously, the club that parked perpendicular will be downing their first drinks and getting their appetizers delivered while the other one is still parking.
Good video Rob. I always park my motorcycle that way. As you know I have a similar background in that I learned to ride a motorcycle being trained from the ground up in PD motor school as an officer. On or off duty riding your personal bike that's the best way to park a bike. For the civilian rider, (police too) visibility is of the utmost importance. You can see much more pulling out of a parking spot parked like this than you can duck-walking the bike backward into oncoming traffic out of the spot. I don't do a lot of group rides but in the few, I have done on my personal bike, I always find this is a skill that is largely lacking. A lot of people will pull in a spot "head first" and they'll look at me like "what are you doing?". You ride how you've been trained and just as important, how you PRACTICE or lack thereof so folks, get out there and practice! He just gave you the training objectives. Ride Safe!.
Great info! I’d be curious to see how you handle some other situations - like parking in the left aisle of a busy parking lot (I usually avoid this if possible), or in a parallel parking spot on a busy road. I always worry that cars behind me get confused when I turn left to back into a parallel spot on a street, or my nose will often be a little in the lane if I were to back straight in - especially if I stop early enough to not scrape my pipes on the tall curbs in LA (I also ride a Street Glide)
Great videos. I've been watching and learning. What kind of bars / size / risers are on this Electraglide? You look like your hands are level with your shoulders. Keep up the great videos. SG

Great information. How would you handle parking a group ride in a small downtown where the spots are all designed as 45-degree angled nose-in? A lot of parking lots down south are similar with one-way flow and 45-degree slots.
Awesome Video, just a question, how do you like the OEM CVO seat? Is it comfortable or do you usually swap them out? Thanks for your time and ride safe…..
Thank you very much! I got rid of that seat a long time ago. I actually did 2 videos on this subject. One was on this CVO Street Glide and the more recent one was on my CVO Road Glide.
Great video, as usual! Just curious though, what is going on way behind you in the background? Is that a swing? 🤔🙂 oh never mind. I just figured out I can zoom in 😂 he’s just back there doing some pull-ups. Okay, cool! 😊
I don't enjoy riding motorcycles weighing over 300 pounds because parking them and moving them is too difficult. Years ago I owned a smaller Kawasaki Vulcan. It weighed 440 pounds. It could be pushed, and backing it while seated could be done. It was just a lot of work to do it. If a shoe lost traction while pushing it backward, there was always the chance that the motorcycle could fall in that moment. Doing such maneuvers on slopes was even more difficult. Riding scooters, mini-motos, and other light weight motorcycles is really more fun because there are no difficulties moving them around. It is why people who ride Groms for the first time say that they had more fun riding them than any other motorcycle they've ever ridden.
Question; I parked at a local diner nose into spot because of incline (higher at nose than rear). I parked in the middle of spot because I don’t want the cars parked on either spot of me to have someone hit my bike while they open their car door. I happen to be on one of my bikes that has a center stand so I’m on that. While I’m inside diner I see another biker pull into my spot on his H-D an instead of being his front tire beyond my rear tire on right side he pulls right besides me and parks where now he’s in a position of either getting smacked by a car door and if he drops his bike it will knock over mine. I don’t mind sharing a parking spot but IMHO the right way of him parking would have been him diagonal of me with his front tire just beyond my rear tire. This way he’s not blocking my exit and if his bike drops he won’t take my bike with him. By the way he was a big dude and possibly a club member ( although he had no colors on) so me being a senior citizen I didn’t want to educate him in proper parking techniques. I guess what I’m saying first I thought his parking was inconsiderate and selfish. What do you think?
Thank you for watching and hopefully you’re subscribed to my RUclips channel!👍🏾😊 ruclips.net/user/BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle I agree with you. There’s etiquette and unspoken rules in almost everything. It’s called a social contract. Unfortunately not everyone lives by it.

I only needed to see someone go flying into an "open" parking spot one time (luckily they didn't hit my bike but it was close) to park at the FRONT of the parking spot. I want to announce to the whole world that spot is taken! I have no interest at all to see who gets cited when someone knocks my bike into a car then drives off. I've admin'd parking lot surveillance systems and let me assure you reading a license plate is no sure thing.
So to make it clear ... always have it in 1st gear before turning off the bike or can i turn of the bike than put it in 1st ( like a manual car can be put into gear while off?)

I rode a motorcycle about 35 years ago, recently I got a 1986 virago 1100. I’m a beginner as far as I am concerned. I watch many videos and have just discovered your videos, well done. I like the way you explain exactly what you are doing and why! It helps! Keep up the good work and I will be watching many more of your videos. Ride safe and enjoy each and every ride!

Damn.. am I the only guy that discovered your channel.. and now I’m binging every single episode?? Great content, Lieutenant. I just retired myself. 30 years of Law Enforcement. But I don’t miss that Lt. job. 😩
Been riding since I was 16. I noticed that my skills eroded after being off the bike for 18 months. I been practicing all these slow speed skills. Thanks again, brotha . My confidence on my Road King has gone through the roof in the last couple days. Feels good to be the boss of my bike .

I’m thankful for people like you and I’m going to pay it forward here.

my favorite way to park my bike is at a truck stop right up against an idling truck while the driver's asleep. i know no one will mess with my bike that way. a couple of my bike's have gotten run over that way but i still believe in the practice. on a serious note isnt it just easier if you have two spots open just to pull in to spot one ,u turn into spot two? then you only have to back up about 8 inches.
Sure you can do that. Definitely not the easier way to do it.

I was in Florida this year for two Practice Sessions.
Genius how you standardize the steps. I am learning so much!

Thanks for sharing that. I hope those curbs are low.
Your tip of parking a motorcycle in the front of a parking space is the best. Most put there bike in the rear and always worry about someone hitting it
Thanks

Good stuff, this and U-turn from a stop go hand and hand for group rides.
The main reason for backing in is safety. Your vision isn't obscured when you pull out.
If you're on a taller bike like an ADV, you should also look out for gravel, sand, oil and dips at your chosen parking spot. The last thing you want to do is to slip or have your foot grabbing air while backing the bike in.
Correct. Actually, you should be looking for that regardless of the kind of motorcycle your riding. 👍🏾

This would actually be 2 motorcycles per spot.

I only needed to see someone go flying into an "open" parking spot one time (luckily they didn't hit my bike but it was close) to park at the FRONT of the parking spot. I want to announce to the whole world that spot is taken!
I have no interest at all to see who gets cited when someone knocks my bike into a car then drives off. I've admin'd parking lot surveillance systems and let me assure you reading a license plate is no sure thing.
True, if you're between two larger vehicles than someone may not see your bike tucked in against the curb.
