It's the tires too. He didn't have to sit as long in the grid as other drivers and he did great job keeping temperatures just right. That gave him the advantage to be able to drive as well as he did. Of course his skills and experience are undeniable too, nothing away from Kimi. But the tires are just SO tricky to keep at the exact right temperature to work and that's something Pirelli needs to fix. Basically, Kimi was one of the only drivers able to do that, and also because he didn't have to sit on the grid so long.

F1 is gonna lose so much when he retires. I really do hope that if he continues to 2021 that Alfa is able to give him better car/Ferrari is able to produce better power unit. I've been watching F1 since I can remember. I have the complete races from the late 70's to this day. All of them. I have books and lots of footage from the early days. This is quite arguably one of the best first laps of any driver in the whole F1 history considering KR was driving such a poor car. I can remember Senna's first lap at Donington in 1993 and I always remember the start of the Dutch GP in 1983 when Eddie Cheever jump from P11 to P2 right at the first corner of the old Zandvoort circuit. Eddie was driving the Renault. This first lap from Kimi stands up very well among the ones I just mentioned before. And also Jean Alesi's first lap at the French GP in 1989 wich was his F1 debut btw. Amazing stuff.
Edit: The most amazing thing of this first lap by KR is that when he reached sixth place, Bottas and Sainz could already be seen at the front. That is absolutely amazing.
