Thanks for what you do. I have been sewing for 50+ years but since the start of the pandemic I have been watching YOU to learn how to quilt I totally enjoy your style of teaching, slow and steady....just like sewing on the machine. :) You always make sure that you are explaining things to the newbie AND to the experienced (so they don't get bored). Oh my gosh, thank you!!! I have always wondered about that "line" on the rulers; use the inside edge, use the actual line, use the outside edge?? Once again, Rob to the rescue!

Excellent video, as always. I’ve been watching your for years and although I’ve been quilting for a long time, there are always new things to learn. Whenever I use jelly rolls, I measure to see if the 2 1/2 “ goes from peak (the tip of the pinked edge) to the other peak, or from valley to valley. Makes all the difference in the world. Keep up the wonderful work and thank you. :)

Hi, first time anyone explained how to sew on the pinked edge. I have actually cut them off of pre cuts. What a waste of time. Thanks for input. Very helpful. Could you explain when using your ruler, am I lining up the material on the inner part of the line, right on the middle or to the outside of the line. I know how critical just a few threads one way or the other can be. Has taken some of the joy of quilting away for me. Looking forward to spending more time with you.
You've answered some basic questions I've had for so long, even though I've sewn with jelly rolls before, that usually make me reluctant to pursue all those pretty projects using strip sets -- THANK YOU!

I've been learning for a year now so really appreciate all the explanations as to why it's done that way, I'm making a quilt from a jelly roll at moment perfect timing. Thanks Rob so pleased to see you creating and enjoying for sew well, from from a wet and stormy uk today.
One more thing (sorry), but when I teach, I encourage folks to cut as many strips as possible with moving the fabric. For instance, if you’re cutting five 2 1/2”, take a 10” or your longest ruler and cut at 10”, then move your ruler and cut a 7 1/2”, then 5” and finely a 2 1/2”. Do this as much as possible whenever cutting strips of any size. The less you move your fabric the better. IMHO. I’ll be quiet now.
I’ve started to do this and I’m getting better cuts. I’ve been quilting for over 30 yrs, so you can teach an old dog new tricks-lol.

@@twinstar9 Abosulutely! If you’re cutting three inch strips, prep your fabric, making sure it square, get your longest and widest ruler, and start your cut at 15”, move the ruler and cut at 9”, then 6”, etc. move the ruler, not the fabric. Thank you so much for pointing my mistake. Happy sewing!

Thank you Rob! I was wondering what you were doing with that wool mat....Always fun watching your tips and tricks, in fact did pick up on one while you were cutting HST with the slotted trimmer. I was going up one side and down the other where you went bottom to top both sides and what a difference it made no more shifting. thanks again for all you do!

Would absolutely love to learn how save moola by cutting from yardage to create my own ; fat quarters, "roll" of strips etc to eliminate waste and use up some of my own stash as opposed to always letting the stash accumulate to immense proportions... and also creating a more attractive "scrap" quilt with the mounds of (guilt ridden) chunks of expensive fabric that needs to stay out of the landfills.

Hi Rob! Great tips! I haven’t been able to get really nice mitered corners when I’m binding my quilt- it’s hit or Miss for me, sometimes it seems really bulky and I can’t get it flat enough to have that perfect 45 defined in my corner, any secrets You can share would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks for these great tips! I have worked with many jelly rolls and have had my share of uneven/wonky strips. Sometimes I don’t even bother to use them or other times, I trim them down for binding . Any advice on how to work around these problem strips?

How do you feel about open ironed seams in your opinion is there a suitable time to do them? What about backstitches at the end of rows?

When you’re lining up your ruler to cut, do you align it with the outside of line, middle or inside of line? I’ve always aligned it with the center. Will this cause issues?
I love watching you! I need to slowdown! I also do not like the pinked edges. I understand why but I need to get better at sewing with them! Not a good 1/4 seam when I use them!

Water skiing LOL.. never heard that term... When I took my first quilting lesson the instructor asked us to measure a 1/4 inch from the needle and then put masking tape down on our machine.. several layers to make a ridge.. and butt the strip against it to get our 1/4 inch 'consistent'. Are there some instructors still teaching that??

Hi Rob - I'm a fairly new quilter - and the hardest part for me is accurate cutting. I have the hardest time squaring up my blocks and also the finished quilt. I've watched (I think all) RUclips videos - I just don't get it ...HELP

I made a wedding quilt for my daughter and son-in-law. I was told I was not consistent with sewing my seams, by watching you and others, I found out that the strips are not always cut 2.5 inches...
Very disappointed..
For new quilters flipping is bad. Tell them to use a second ruler just butted up against the other ruler. The fabric separates when they flip it.

Why do “my” strips “bow”
Most likely you are apply more pressure to one piece of fabric than the other, so one is slightly stretching more than the other. Try to let the fabrics "ride on the machine, no pushing or pulling.
This is many more than three tips and you go so fast that I can’t keep up and I just space out. I think you should not drink coffee before a video, and talk much more slowly, and methodically. Omit what not to do. Show in close-ups each tip that you’re saying. Many in your audience are ancient people and don’t have the same speed as you.
