- THE IMPOSSIBLE FAULT FIND - Electrician Life
Join Cory & Reuben as they finish up the consumer unit and try to find several faults, one of which is seemingly impossible to trace. Reuben installs his first electric vehicle charging point all by himself, and Cory narrowly escapes being killed by wasps.

Must admit this channel is now my favourite..it’s come on leaps and bounds from when I started watching in the beginning…keep up the great work
I completely agree with you! As electricians they always showed their “potential“ 😁
@@nusermane1076 wasn’t very punny that one haha 😂😂
I'm not a sparky but I really like your videos - great vibe as a company and entertaining. A bit like Skill Builder channel. Just easy watching and a pleasure to see people who know what they are doing at work. :-) Cory - at 23 yrs I think you also deserve a pat on the back mate. Keep it up!
ruben did a brilliant job he is learning fast and you are a good mentor
Climbing in a small space towards wasp nests… Sounds like a job for Reuben! 🤣
That labeller!!!! What the model hahaha?? Love the videos and the fault finding and the work is second to none!! Keep up the good work!!
1st thing bonding, those additional bonding cable maybe going to cast iron stack pipes that have now be replaced but the bonding has be left in place , by the age of that house suggest it did have cast iron stack pipes in the past , 2nd was that second consumer unit fed from an RCBO ? it should be fed from an MCB . Because and RCD fed from an other "RCD" upstream should have a tripping current 3 times of the RCD downstream .
Do you need selectivity in a domestic premises? No real risk is there.
@@travoltasbiplane1551 Other than annoying the customer, not really an issue.
@@Ragnar8504 they probably deserved it anyway...
Well Cory and Reuben, on the basis of the quality of your work on this job, you are now the “A” Team for Artisan Electrics 😃👌👌👏👏
this video has chilled vibes, the music, the tone in Codys voice, so relaxing to watch, Kudos to the editor and the rest of the team 🥰🥰🎉🎉
The filming is chaotic though and music completely unnecessary.
@@aptsys how is the filming chaotic 😂😂😂
@@Matt-td9wx Moving around all the place etc. People want to see the content, not waving a camera around.
Reuben is progressing well . hope Jordan can find a collage so he can start his prentship .
Thank you for continuing this long walk...thank you for the education. Much appreciated when time for interests is so limited.
Excellent job Ruben.
Cory & Ruben are the dream team!
My thought on supplementary bonding is if there is a metal object that might end up getting in contact with a wire then it would cause an instant trip rather than becoming hot. Are used to be required to attach plumbing to the electrical system in the US but I think that's fading out now that most municipalities are using plastic incomers and most plumbing is not copper in the house. Which leaves me in a house with unbonded copper piping that makes me go should I or should I not?
Well done Reuben, Ace job !
1:34 A lamp at this height? Does it light up for the birds or where does it shine?
You certainly need tamper proof screws if you have to get a ladder first.
Thanks for uploading so regular I love it guys
In The Netherlands we use extra bonding in the bathroom. There we connect together the water pipes, drains, bath tub and even the concrete floor. This ensures that even when both the RCD and main earth fails, and someting de bathrooms fails and becomes live, at least every metal object is at the same voltage, so you won't die.
maybe they did something like this here also?
We used to do that and its called supplementary bonding. Its not a requirement now in the UK if there is RCD protection
In the Netherlands it is always required. There have been accidents in the past of where people got shocked because their neighbours below did a bad DIY job and their bathroom floor became live. When they then touched a grounded tap, they got elektrocuted. I guess this is also why additional bonding is required here. You simply cannot assume that your neighbours didn't mess up their wiring. Especially here where everyone is allowed to DIY their own electrics.
@@elco_os9355 Bonding wouldn't help in that situation, in fact it would make it worse.
@@sdgelectronics there should be also a earthing mat inside the bathroom floor as well. So the floor, the tap and other metal stuff like bath tub and heater are at bonded together and therefor are always at the same potential. So standing on the floor with wet feet and also touching a tap should then never get you elektrocuted since there cannot be a potential difference.
Great Job Reuben you have a very good teacher.
I like watching you Guys I was sparks all my working life I’m 72 now. You Guys are really good at your jobs. Also both of you are really good looking ( according to my female friend. )
Nice explanation of using to ohms setting to find which end of the cable the damage may have been unfortunately its about mid way.
Did I see rodent poison trays in the loft where the wasps are living.?
Last week I lifted a floor board in a rather dark loft and once I had it out, I noticed a wasp nest in the very last joist space under the eaves, easily twice the size of the big one you had here! Thankfully it was completely empty.
Great job Reuben 😎

Or takes a little longer!
Cory is going to star status !
Great work ruben 👌👍
Also cory and jordan have you even considered when doing a kitchen rewire for example instead of using capping to give a bit of mechanical protection use pvc conduit I understand some times it’s not practical but it would mean if there’s a fault you can pull and draw new wires though the conduit that’s buried in the wall and use 25mm pvc conduit because there is more room and it’s easier to pull new cables though great videos keep it up so experienced for your age cory well done 👍
@georgelelliott YOU DOILEM.
another great video, keep them coming
Another great vid! Can you maybe demo more about how Tradify works for you day to day and also some more details about the printer and accompanying app? It looks fantastic!
Excellent
Well done 👍
Some PIRs can be overidden with a short power-cycle
Yeah Bell floodlights can be overridden by turning power on and off fast and then reset by power off for ten seconds
This explains a lot to me. Now i know why my outside light sometimes doesn't turn off after i accidently toggled the switch. It is actually a feature.
Well done you both
I assume you're going to recommend the customer get pest control in first for the wasps nest. 😎
Really nice job and that car charger looks great. As for the wasps I wouldn't go up there but they're important pollinators.
Great video can you show more on how the brother label works please
Just watched some Nick Bundy now this awesomeness!! 👍

You should watch David Savery and Residual Current.

@@rogerbean393 thanks for the advice 👍

When you do do that second cable run, take the opportunity to run them both underground.
What is the model & Name of the green test wheel you are using at 6:11 in video?
Hi guys could you send a link for the magnetic r1 r2 lead you showed in a resent video you said Amazon but can’t seem to find it

I've go that same printer. Which app do you use for it? It is indeed a great printer, however I can't seem to find a good app for it... Thank you for your content, you guys are doing great 👍
Hi can you post the link for the Brother Printer please mate? Cheers
Can’t find those pir over ride links on Amazon ?
If I was a criminal thanks for the advice 😜
Just out of curiosity, do no sparkies use cable finders/tracers... I got mine for data work, but it has helped me out endlessly tracing where some electric cables were snaking around the house.
My dad worked for bt and he always asked me this when I used to go on about doing fault finding in work 😂
I've only ever seen sparks use a continuity tester. A cable toner would save so much time
I *vaguely* remember David Savery mentioning one in some video once upon a time, but I have never seen one in use in any of the other sparks doing YT, so I wondered, maybe they don't want to be confused with telco guys :)
surely they are not even expensive?
@@fumthings My fluke one (pro 3000) is around 100-120 quid i see on amazon, but cheaper ones aplenty on there for around 30 so no not big money
How do you guys charge for fault finding?
Just caught the video, looks a nice roomy board, what make was it?
I'm glad Corey took over far me video friendly
Genuine question id love to hear by about, where do you learn your tricks considering your not in the electrical game as long as others, that was a great trick to do with locating a rough distance as to where the fault could potentially be
Great video yet again
He said in the vid, David Savery has a video about it. Check his channel its excellent.
Does a flashing dewalt light warning you of low charge?
Yep, shows your battery is running out
Will be great to see an episode with a Koi filter house.
what is the app called that you used? I've got that printer but couldn't find the app
Which app do you use for the printer?
What make are your trousers mate ?
Nice vid!
Could we have a link for the Brother printer please?
You probably know this but I’m going to say it for other as well, if you see a plastic incomer just don’t assume that you don’t need bonding, if the pipe re enters the ground else where it will need bonding still you can test this by testing between the Incoming earth at cut out (with all bonding and main earth disconnected ) and the pipework your testing with IR test and your looking for a resistance greater than 0.02 mega ohms. This will not need bonding anything lower will need bonding as you have proven it has a strong enough path to earth. Anyone who has an opinion on this I’d love to hear as this is my interpretation of guidance note 8. Cheers !
Do you have a link to the jacket make please ta
Amoured cable slightly out of plumb :)
Cory what’s the app you have been using on your brother labelling machine
I completely agree with Cory's theory behind disconnecting the sup bonds. A few years ago, I don't remember when I think it was during the 17th so around 2012 a woman had a fault on an electric shower while using it, standing in a steel bath that was bonded. There was less resistance on the bond to the bath as it was 6mm cable than in the 4mm earth in the T&E to the shower and she died.
What happened to the SWA cleats under the car charger? I'm sure you told Ruben "drill into the mortar line, every third row." We now have four cleats screwed into the brick, two bricks apart.
I was thinking the same…
Never drill into the mortar, lazy man way out as it’s softer.
Only exception would be if the property is so old the bricks are crumbling!
Good on Ruben for doing it right.
After all that’s the thin layer of cement holding it all together.
@@rogerbean393 I was thinking the same.
21:27 thats what she saidddddddddd
Another fantastic episode of father and son does electrickery... sorry, Cory and Reuben. My biggest complaint was, blink, and it was over.
interesting vid, tip, dont kill wasps near where your working! it sends out a chemical signal like a flare and they will swarm where the dead one is (from experience!) as to that fault... bloody annoying!
so, will the dynamic duo return to try to fix the problem? will the exterminator be called in before next visit? will comissoner jordan help on the next bit?? tune in next time... same artisan time... same artisan channel!
great vid (id fire the second camera guy, hes impersonating cory! 😂😂😂)
We never had reward charts at school. The only reward was if you were not given three of the belt.
How do single pole RCD's work ?
Single pole devices only break the line conductor.
Double pole devices break both the line and neutral conductors.
I don't know if it was a mistake or on purpose but " Bundy Jumping" 🤣
🤣
This cable run through the structure, potentially through the cavity, is not good practice. Cables need to be properly supported and protected along their run, and identifiable, in that they need to run within prescribed zones, unless they are clipped direct on the surface, on carried within another containment on the surface of the structure, even if it is SWA cable.
The cable fault could be due to a myriad of reasons - abandoning it as a lost cause is the best outcome.
Was surprised they were planning to run the new swa partly in the cavity again surley a lesson learned with the first one
What brand are Cory’s trousers?

If there was an EICR done, was that fault not picked up on that.
Stop it. No such thing as a 100% eicr .
@@dangranet7621 maybe not, but you don't miss a sub main.
The way it appears on camera, is that it's not been tested and just switched on, then the issue is discovered, that could be down to the way it's edited, the circuit was not tested on the EICR or board change, or the fault has appeared between the EICR and board change.
Are you guys due to install any Hive EV charge points. Be good to see a video about your thoughts on this new charger!
over stretching on a ladder tut tut , was PIR set to continues use ,switch not labeled ,not your fault ,homeowners fault ,so did you disconnect all those earthing's?,if so you are liable if there is a problem
Wonder lead? What are you wondering about I wonder? It's a wander lead for wandering.
whats your procedure on a board swap do you not do an EICR first to discover any potential faults?
Nice videos can I have the serial number of that label printer please
Which Klein screwdriver is it tamperproof , hvac or standard
Is it 27 bits or 15 ?
@@EEAEE8 Looks like 27.
I find this chap quite entertaining to watch however that other one is soooooo boring!
The RCD tripping could have been explained better. I mean a quick sketch of system for apprentices would be good.
If there was no fault on the old consumer unit to the utility room how would one suddenly appear on the new board?
Love that Ruben guy
Not all the circuits in the old consumer unit were RCD protected. At 19 ohms the fault current would only be around 12Amps which is presumably less than the previous MCB.
Introducing RC protection to circuits that didn't previously have it can show up all sorts of neutral-earth faults that otherwise wouldn't have caused a trip.
@@Bin216 surely the customer would have noticed the extra consumption from a new, permanent 12A load though?
@@Bin216 and, if it was a neutral-earth fault, it wouldn't have pulled any current anyway, but would still trip an RCD.
@@chrisrogers2848 You would hope, at a guess it would add about £350 to your monthly electricity bill.
Surely that SWA for the charger could have been buried?

No such thing as tamper proof. Use coach bolts
Hate faults like that, but I never knew the trick to find roughly how far the fault is down the cable with a continuity test. Every days a school day 📖
