Totally. It just sticks in your head. I had it buzzing around in mine today and found they made a video. What memories. Then there were Three concert was the first time I saw them live. Then the Duke tour which was amazing for me. I often wondered what they were like in the early 70's as I had also recently had seen a Steve Hackett and a Peter Gabriel Concert. I missed out!
When I was younger, it was all about heavy rock. I still love those bands, but there is now room in me to appreciate brilliant stuff like this. Top drawer.
Timeless stuff,Phil is full of it. His music will live on forever. Unlike most of the manufactured crap of today. This is a real band.Real bands barely exist now.
This song is brilliant. A pulsating pedal tone, a fist-pumping beat, soaring power chords - almost like they are channeling AC/DC (Thunderstruck, written ten years later, has a similar feel. Mashup, anyone?). In 1980, Genesis was moving toward shorter song formats and pop-oriented themes, but they were still thinking as a prog-rock band. As a drummer, I count this beat as six bars of 4/4 and one of 2/4, although someone here pointed out that 13/8 works, too. A stroke of genius is the modulation at 0:49 ("I can show you. . ."). It sounds epic, but it's rather straightforward. The bass goes from B to C, and Mike plays a D major chord over the C, giving it that #11th sound. Then they go back to B. Power chord magic. But the real fun comes in the E minor section, where they go into 3/4 time. And 4/4 and one bar of 5/4. I wish they had stayed in this vein for a few more albums.
Look up the "Musical box" documentary, the only Genesis documentary which includes the "calling all stations" line up and has interviews with Ray Wilson, Bill Bruford, Chester Thompson and Daryl Steurmer. In that doc, Mike tells us how that song came to be. He recalls playing a slower version of the riff and Phill telling him "Do you realize that's in 13/8?" so Mike at first argued with him that it was in 4/4 but when Phil started counting along with the riff, he indeed ended up on 13. So to the band themselves, the song is in 13/8 and who am I to tell them otherwise?
What a brilliant in-depth analysis - almost as good as the song itself ! I always felt Genesis created more interesting material together than they did in solo projects. It's sad that they don't write together anymore.

I turned it on for over 40 years now... but I still can't get enough of it! Video truly killed the radio star, yet Phil Collins and Genesis will live forever in our hearts and our memories!!! ;-))
@@perrin6 Yeah those artists from 650 years ago that people can still name and still recognise their masterpieces had zero impact when you think about it. They really pale in comparison with the lads in Genesis and Humble Pie etc.
Heard this song last nite when i randomly woke up and it was on BBC4 the old top of the pops but the Genesis/Phil Collins/Peter Gabriel dedicated one and i havnt been able to get it out of my head since, such a catchy song and well out of time, but Phil being the drummer he knows the beat and when to come in with the words. A hard thing to do and he does it so well
I was eight years old when this came out, funny how back then music like this just goes over your head but in later years you realise just what a masterpiece it was / is.
My dad used to play this band on vinyl, used to jig around to it, saying he thought he looked like Phil. Lol. I'd never heard of them until he introduced me to them in the 80's. Now since he has passed away I imagine him listening with me.
I interpret the verses ("all I need is a TV show") as 1 bar of 6/4 followed by 1 bar 7/4 - repeat. The end chorus outro is the same . The "I can show you" parts are straight 4.
A lot of people don't realise how unusual this song is. It's just a repeated verse and bridge for most of the song, the chorus doesn't come in until the near the end at 2:55 ! and is sung over the same riff as the verse. It shouldn't work but it does and no one even notices.
Just about to become one of the biggest stars in the world! And of course he was. What a fantastic voice. What melodic sense. He was totally for real. He'll be lauded in future, up there with Prince and Michael, Madonna and Springsteen. He deserves to be.
All I need is a TV show, that and the radio Down on my luck again, down on my luck again I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life It's driving me mad just another way of passing the day I, I get so lonely when she's not there I... You're just another face that I know from the TV show I have known you for so very long I feel you like a friend Can't you do anything for me, can I touch you for a while Can I meet you another day and we will fly away I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life It's driving me mad just another way of passing the day I, I get so lonely when she's not there I... Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again I can see another face Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again I can see another face Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again
What a tune. You can’t dance to this Because it’s done it a 13/8 signature. This was a time when music was music and played by people who knew how to sing and play their instruments. God I miss this stuff. Never will you hear it again in today’s world. So turn it on again for 2020.

Sigit Basuki what? what are you talking about?
+Sonic & Knuckles
He's a troll.
😱your post make me see that I have 50 😱 you are a bad guy!!!!!
Christ, he looks mid 40s here, I just had a look at a recent photo and he looks about mid 80s now
I was born in 1979 and an early memory of mine is hearing my parents vinyl or cassettes...Genesis, Fleetwood Mac, Supertramp, Beatles...I'm blessed
🔥Y.N.W.A🔥
This is one of their best songs, i'm really surprised by the lack of views
Christopher Howe Loved this album. Lot of deep songs!
+Christopher Howe 99% are listening to Silento, T Swift, N Minaj and so on.
+Christopher Howe
These genesis post Hackett e Gabriel suck, dude....
+Sauro Galli No I completely disagree this is better than a lot of the prog stuff they did with Gabriel
+Christopher Howe I completely agree! Collins-era is better than Gabriel-era, in my personal opinion
The most underestimated and undeservedly despised band of all time. .... Thanks Genesis.
No. Very estimated.
@@golfilloz genereral hated by the music media in the UK, might be different across the pond.
@@golfillozConcordo. Não são subestimados.
Genesis turn it on again classic music from the eighties bring it all back again so we can be happy again and not sad anymore good times back then
A truly awesome band very very sadly missed 😢😢😢take me back quick 😢
Pure gold this song
I turned it on for over 40 years now... but I still can't get enough of it! Video truly killed the radio star, yet Phil Collins and Genesis will live forever in our hearts and our memories!!! ;-))
Amazing
My God , what talent..the British musicians of the 60s, 70s and 80‘e were the equivalent of the Italian painters of the renaissance.
Big talk Keith, big talk. Another way of putting it is 'a load of old bollocks.'
ahahah jesus
👏 🙏 🤝 👍
Certainly has more impact
@@perrin6 Yeah those artists from 650 years ago that people can still name and still recognise their masterpieces had zero impact when you think about it. They really pale in comparison with the lads in Genesis and Humble Pie etc.
sounds as brilliant today as it did back in 1980
Sure this was wrote it 79 still sounds very 70s to me
@@paulgreen4151 released in 80, let's not split hairs
I wasn't even born when this was released and its top of my playlist. Even my son loves it..
REALEASED 8th MARCH 1980 RECORDED OCT-DEC 1979 BRILLIANT SONG NEVER GET TIRED LISTENING TO GENESIS😁👍
Exactly the same for me. I was 14 then and couldn't wait to hear it on the radio.
@@MyFun80s , yes, me 12 years old in 1980.
A muchos nos fascinó. Grande, Collins, Banks y Rutherford!
pero esta version es de 1999. Yo ese año tenia 11 años y lo escuchaba en la radios de apoco me hice fan. Luego describi que era un remake. Me quedo con esta version
Amazing that Phil can be singing AND playing the drums simultaneously. He really gets around doesn't he? ;)
Sure does. The Album Both Sides, He wrote and recorded all the music for all instruments. Mixed and produced it as well. LEGENDARY
You might have possibly missed the joke
Gil Moore - Triumph, Don Brewer - Grand funk railroad..2 other drummers who sang great lead on some songs! Check them out if you dont know about them
What a belter. Great vocal by Phil C 🤙
A hard thing to do and he does it so well
My favourite Genesis song ,ever 👌
Mine too
my fave Genesis song ❤
Turn it on again by genius classic song from the eighties good stuff
one of my favorites outros ever.
Best time to listen to this song...it's a sunny morning, not a cloud in the sky, it will lift your spirit right away
classic timeless song.
This is my ultimate "I wish I wrote this" riff. It grooves so well you scarcely notice it's in 13/4.
One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands and singer
Absolutely epic takes me back to my teen years
I was eight years old when this came out, funny how back then music like this just goes over your head but in later years you realise just what a masterpiece it was / is.
Grande referencia da minha vida com um dos maiores bateristas de sempre
This as got to be the best song ever. Genesis at there finest
My dad used to play this band on vinyl, used to jig around to it, saying he thought he looked like Phil. Lol.
I'd never heard of them until he introduced me to them in the 80's.
Now since he has passed away I imagine him listening with me.
only one way to listen to this song. LOUD!!! Brilliant
Fantastic band, for some inexplicable reason Phil doesn't get the respect he truly deserves, I don't know why
In 80s he became 'that cheesy pop ballad singer' who cashed in on older audience and that association sticked till to this day
these guys are so talented they had some amazing songs out where is the talent now in 2014 ?
Dream Theatre
Thei've made music over 50 years... now they are doing other projects where their talents at ;-)
Well you've got Royal Blood, a popular old-fashioned rock duo who released their debut album last year. Apart from that, not much.
I'm sure a lot of Genesis fans were already asking that in 1980 though.
Omar Rodriguez Lopez. TMV
This is real music... LOVE it!
Genesis is perfect with Peter or Phil: what a lucky group !
The drumming guitar & song 💯🤟🏻🕊️🇫🇮Sooo Genesis 🎉
this is the coolest thing I have ever seen.
Great singing.
Genesis..... the masters of syncopation wonderful stuff ..keep it dark...
Phil: "So lads, what's the time signature?" Mike and Tony: "Yes."
13/8 isnt it?
I interpret the verses ("all I need is a TV show") as 1 bar of 6/4 followed by 1 bar 7/4 - repeat. The end chorus outro is the same . The "I can show you" parts are straight 4.
☝🏻😆
Check out Warren Huart's in depth analysis of this song. Really interesting :-)
Greatest intro ever
A lot of people don't realise how unusual this song is. It's just a repeated verse and bridge for most of the song, the chorus doesn't come in until the near the end at 2:55 ! and is sung over the same riff as the verse. It shouldn't work but it does and no one even notices.
Also there are two Phil Collins, one singing and the other playing drums.
Is that the first Prog song you hear?
Also a pedalled note in the bass all the way through.
Good pick up. I researched this song. Phil had trouble drumming it at a later concert. Cool. Thanks.
Love 2.44 where Phil mimics the trumpets
This a best Genesis Collins era song,
Just about to become one of the biggest stars in the world! And of course he was. What a fantastic voice. What melodic sense. He was totally for real. He'll be lauded in future, up there with Prince and Michael, Madonna and Springsteen. He deserves to be.
Great stuff 🙂🙂
One of my most favourite songs ever.
Yep 👍
Unreal track, just gets better every time I listen to it. Phil & Co are dynamite.
This and Driving the last spike keep me going some days. Pure magic
I loved this song as a young lad, its just an awesome tune. Phil Collins with his gravely vocals works so well here, total classic.
such a great tune! dont make tracks like this anymore!
All I need is a TV show, that and the radio
Down on my luck again, down on my luck again
I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life
I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life
It's driving me mad just another way of passing the day
I, I get so lonely when she's not there
I...
You're just another face that I know from the TV show
I have known you for so very long I feel you like a friend
Can't you do anything for me, can I touch you for a while
Can I meet you another day and we will fly away
I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life
I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life
It's driving me mad just another way of passing the day
I, I get so lonely when she's not there
I...
Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again
Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again
I can see another face
Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again
I can see another face
Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again
Thank's
Mil gracias!
👍
Brilliant song by a very talented & underrated band😍
Duke is no doubt up there with the best of genesis albums ever....X :)
Chloe Delores Really puts you through the emotional wringer.
i am no fan of Genesis, but this song its incredible
Classic Genesis and a fantastic tune.
Forgot how good this track is x
What a tune. You can’t dance to this Because it’s done it a 13/8 signature. This was a time when music was music and played by people who knew how to sing and play their instruments. God I miss this stuff. Never will you hear it again in today’s world. So turn it on again for 2020.
I need to go back to see them in concert ASAP 😢😢😢😢
I simply just love Phil´s voice
I keep turning this one on again.
