That’s just the reality of it though especially for those who have not completed higher forms of education such as a bachelors/masters. I am in the military, and I am accomplishing much more while being enlisted then I have ever done in any part time retail job I have ever worked for. I get to take college courses towards my degree all paid for, and outside of pursuing that I am receiving technical training that I am getting paid for, for the field of work I was hired for prior to enlistment. On top of that I receive an honorable discharge at the end of my contract which has significantly more value then having experience working years for most retail companies. I’m 30 now, and have been fucking around not doing much of anything since I was 19. So I completely understand how this guy feels.
It's the same theme at most retail stores; Goals being set impossibly high Pressure from management to do unethical things to reach said goals New policies being made by corporate people who have never stepped foot in their own brick and mortar stores Regional managers being paid the most for doing the least work Playing games with your hours and income
That's why I never worked retail. I did demos at Costco and that's the closest I got to retail for the most part I stuck to factory work. In a factory, you can cuss like a sailor or talk like a human being when shit hits the fan. Plus I mostly worked in my scrap clothes.
@@LeoMidori only retail job I had that was great was Macy's. I was part time, and was only supposed to be seasonal but they kept me on. I was a full time manager at KFC at the time, that was utter trash. Since I was seasonal/pt they never gave me a goal to meet. I'd generally work like 10am-3pm a few days a week in the men's store, generally the Home section. I'd be lucky if I checked out 10-15 people a a day if it wasn't a Saturday. Only other thing I had to do, was stock shelves if there was room, and tidy up. Easiest job ever. Sucked it paid minimum wage.
I worked there for eight years, and absolutely everything this man says is 100% on point to every experience i had during that terrible span of my life.
These policies pushed me right out of GameStop. I'd rather wait than deal with an employee beg me to buy a card. Rest in hell GameStop you won't be missed.
Yeah but GS bonuses are literally a percentage of your profit. So at 64 bucks, that's no business done. Plenty of time to clean a bathroom if he didn't have customers.
@@@roflrex Profit after what deductions though? You have no idea what you're talking about. How about you go work at GameStop for a decade and personally see to keeping those toilets sparkling.
same tbh. I tried many times years ago but they acted like they wanted some 5 star resume for a min. wage starter job, yet would hire the most moronic rude/hateful low IQ people, bleh, good riddance when the place closes down tbh, digital sales and amazon/ebay are way cheaper anyway
Same. My resume could have made me a store manager right off the bat but the guys that they would hire over me were the dumbest fucking idiots I’ve ever seen. No gaming knowledge on top of that so good riddance. They did me a favor not hiring me, those poor Schmucks got the worse end of that deal.
@@willn8664 he doesn't really have anything to gain from lying apart from short term attention. Why does the internet need proof for every single statement made ever?
I can top that. I once applied for Express clothing. I got the job, went inside the store, looked around, lost motivation, bounced after 1 hour of being there. Just left without a word. Boy, in my younger days I was notorious for leaving without notice. They might as well had posted warning signs everywhere in town letting companies know about me "The master flaker"
As someone who worked under this man right here I can say he was an amazing manager to work for and really brought that fun aspect of working for GameStop to reality. But he is right about all of the negativity. That stuff was stressful as heck. But he and I now work together again so it’s like he said. “ It all worked out”.
I really cant believe that someone would actually charge ANYONE that doesnt speak English, to me thats horseshit as a Store Leader, I just cant believe some of these stories because I have not dealt with this stuff, and its a real shame that you guys were apart of this and went through it.
I think i complained like a hundred times to the shithead that rang up game warranty when i didnt ask for it. Called up the district manager and he acted like whats the big deal... never shopped at gamestop since
@@r.h.6402 You're right. Without GameStop we may not be able to get used games for cheap unless we find another gamer selling that specific game we're looking for. GameStop is the only place, at least for me, where I can buy a pre-owned game and return it within 7 days. And I do that all the time so I can try before I buy. It's not my fault people sell games or consoles to GameStop and get shitty prices for it. That's just stupid. And one big thing for me is walking into the store and just looking around. Kind of how it was to walk into Blockbuster and see all the movies and games. There's nothing else like that. I don't want to see GameStop close.
GameStop is dying and I can’t think of any way to revive it, honestly i wouldn’t like to if I could. They’ve cheated so many just because those people couldn’t see a bigger picture and yeah you can argue all day if they fell for it they deserve it and all that bullshit, but save it. We all get complacent to some degree and some more than others, it’s what works at the time, hoping to move into the corporate world or whatever. All these idiots on here focusing on why he stayed eleven years, I’m sure he had his reasons that made sense at the time just like you have reasons you do the stupid shit you do. It’s not just about your simple minded perspectives
@@ibanezrg320fm It will close and soon. Just take a look at Gamestop stock. A high of $62.30 at the end of 2007. Now the stock is at $7.82. That's an 87% drop. Most people buy games digitally now or just play on PC where everything is digital. Their in-store merchandise can be bought a lot cheaper online too. Every year they get more and more pointless and are just trying to cover their overhead costs which just leads them to keep pushing their shady practices and overpriced garbage. The whole company is literally treading water in an industry that's leaving them in the dust. Gamestop will soon be the new Blockbuster and just shut down.
I had a gamestop that was a converted EB Games. It was the best place, they would hold trade in's I was looking for and even talked me out of a game I was going to buy new because they knew me and knew I might not like it and to look it up first. I Gave them my 100% loyalty and never bought anything other then there, and they NEVER did me wrong. It just went to nothing and the manager there was one of my favorite people and left. To this day, I wish I could find her again, just to thank her and wish her well. If by some miracle, Sara from the smithfield Crossings sees this, Thank you.
My local one shut down everyone manager included quit and walked out. Didn't even lock the store up. The cameras didn't work and they posted it on a fb game. How the all quit together. It was raided and Al everything was stolen. Lol a mom and pop one opened up and took advantage while they were down. They tried reopening a few months later, it just didn't work out. Everyone was happy going to the mom and pop one. They have 3 rooms set up and you can play games there, hang out with friends, and they're putting a smoke room in it now that it became legal.
Everything that happened in this video pretty much happens in every retail environment. I used to work at a bank and management pushed us to do shady practices
Gamestop is, by far, the worst job I’ve EVER worked. I worked there for 2 years (somehow) as a GA and never was promoted (2 times the work and responsibilities for a couple cent raise? No thanks). My coworkers were awesome people (hell, we still meet up from time to time today, and it’s been roughly 2 years since we all worked there), but the job itself was too damn stressful! It wasn’t worth the mental gymnastics you had to do every shift. Between having to make sure your reserves, power up, protection plan, and used sales were in the green along side having to make sure the store was in top shape, it was a mental nightmare. When I left, I couldn’t even work for over a year because it genuinely screwed me mentally. I now work as a delivery driver for one of the major pizza chains and I’ll tell you, I’d rather work there 40 hours a week busting my ass, than having to work one hour at GameStop. I know the odds of anyone reading this are slim, but it feels good to get this off my chest, cause man, I hate that place.
As a delivery driver, how hard you work reflects directly in how much you can earn. And at the end of the shift you can leave the job behind and not have to think about it until you clock in again. There is a lot of value in those two things.
I'm about to quit my job at Walmart Distribution Center and its the greatest feeling ever. Working in 120 degree trucks with no airflow and terrible management. 3 years of my life spent in that hell.
When i worked at my local walmart i actually loved it until one day a manager lied on me about giving her problems everytime she asks me for something. I LITERALLY ALWAYS DID WHAT I WAS TOLD. That day i told her i needed to finish my work because my department manager had been getting on to me so she made up some bs story to cover her ass. Once i pointed out on accident, yes it was actually on accident, i was so happy. I legit felt like i had escaped hell. I only told you 1 thing that happened at walmart too. They dont care about thier customers, will do anything to cover managers mistakes, Will ask you to do managers jobs as well as stuff that is absurd for you to be doing. If Wal-Mart's Managment was good then it wouldn't be so bad but unfortunately it is. Walmart sucks and i dont recommend anybody work there tbh
When the PS4 was released and there was a high demand for the camera, GameStop was selling it at a higher price than every other retailer. They were told to tell customers it was the new 1080p version of the camera. They never made one 1080p.
It really sounds like the car shop business, every $19.99 oil change end up to be $169.99, and if you don't speak English?! All of a sudden your transmission system needs a full replacement.
I can tell you by experience on a quick lube shop they teach you to sell more to have a good TA at the end of the day (Ticket Average) but i tend to avoid that since most people just need the regular maintenance instead of buying unnecessary stuff
It's funny because I got my boys subscriptions to a couple gaming services after we quit going to GameStop. Only reason I go every now and then is parts replacement for consoles like controllers when I don't want to wait on shipping from the net. My boys are grown now.
DaGleese GameStop is terrible man. Bought madden 16 for 10.00 and nba 2k15 for 4.99 got home Madden was scratched to heck and back and wouldn’t play no matter what I tried, so now I gotta drive all the way back just to get a refund, it was the only madden for the 360 in the store.... all I wanted was to play a few games of football....
Vegito Charmara yes but they check the games I sell them for scratches to ascertain the value of the game which reflects the price the next guy will pay. I agree I should have looked after I bought it but GameStop also should have checked the game when they bought it and put a 14.99 price tag on a 3 year old game that comes out every year ya know, either way GameStop is a crapshoot. They will give you like 2 or 3 dollars for games that they’ll sell for about 10 bucks and their lazy employees won’t check them to see if they work or even if they have a lot of scratches before they sell them to someone.... GameStop is a really shady company, sadly there’s not much in the way of a competitor and the only other option is to pay more for a new game, but if you have a 360/ps3 that’s not an option for most games.
@@DisC6olf3r I read something recently where the CEO said he thinks gamestop is the church of gaming. Needless to say I had a good laugh because both seem to have an issue with appropriate behavior.
No...he probably stayed there because he likes games and he was working with people he felt like family...many of us do feel that way...can't explain why...
@@victorchan4223 ah, working with people that felt like family for $14/hr. Enough to make anyone stay for a lifetime! GameStop is not a career position unless you can somehow get into management working from entry level.
2007-2015 was a pretty rough period for employment in the states too, I commend him for sticking it out I woulda rather been unemployed than feeling mentally disturbed because I cant be more than what they want and then more ontop of it. I mean shit I worked at Sporting Goods in Walmart and I had to run half a store after 2PM-9(or 11PM) and got paid no extra I was like "fuck this im out" within a couple weeks. 8.20/hr fuck that, lol. Any job with a selling position is like this, worked at a telemarketer before and its very similar to his story on gamestop.
@@evan6972 the card that he's talking about. Is a membership card that you pay like once a year I think it is. Or every month. And it has some perks and what not. That's what the "Edge" card was. And is basically the same thing as what "PowerUp" membership card is today.
Hey Camelot, I was a store manager at gamestop for about 5 years. That place was awful. I can personally back up everything he is saying. No matter how great my story was in subs or reserves, my DM would point out that I didnt have enough reserves In the certain games they wanted us to push or something like that. To anyone else, dont work there....
jeezuz, i cant imagine working at a retail store for peanuts. how did any of you survive on being paid in pesos and coat buttons? long story short, i would usually drive to a little mall to get my starbucks for my lunch hour ever so often. its right next to a game stop. for the past many years, i've rarely seen people walk in. there were 2 people working there...and i never understood why 2 for such little traffic, and how they could afford to pay rent when nobody was buying anything. was having a storefront just a marketing ploy? physical console games are quickly becoming a relatively niche...many just buy digital copies.
Honestly, your story sounds like every retail job I’ve ever worked. They all try to rip off customers, overpriced, drugs, steal, not acknowledge hard work and only point out failures, etc.
I work at autoparts and minus the drugs and blow ripping people off is a standard procedure, selling stuff that people don't need or flat out increasing prices without their knowledge. Now some people were rude and did deserve that but a lot of my co-workers just did it to meet numbers because headoffice just hounds you every week expecting perfection and it just wears you out!
@@clipsedrag13 I'd rather them stay and educate people into what they are getting themselves into if they ever decide to work retail. The more you know before hand the more prepared and smart you will be when it comes time to accept that job offer.
It's been my experience that there's two types of people that will say this or similar. The first one means it because they want you gone. You pissed them off or showed them up in some manner and they want you gone. The second one is saying that because they know something that you don't, and they like you enough to warn you without using direct words. They'll keep saying it hoping you WILL resign because there's a storm coming and they wanna shelter you from it.
@@BigDaddyJinx There's a 3rd reason, and it has a lot to do with what the author of the video discussed. They were essentially trying to cut costs to their senior employees by changing them from salaried to hourly. You can cut costs even further by getting senior personnel to resign and filling their position with a bright-eyed junior employee "promotion" and have their pay rate even lower than previous. Even more predatory, people who quit aren't entitled to severance - aggressively pushing them to resign rather than firing them is more money saved. Gamestop is unfortunately a sinking ship, and it has been in its death throes for a long time now. These sorts of practices and values are the unfortunate result of a company that's desperate to stay profitable in a market where they are no longer truly competitive.
@MagikApothocary it would also be unwise to assume that everything this guy says is true. Everyone thinks they're awesome and everyone else is the jerk. Maybe he wasn't that great of a manager.
@MagikApothocary there's the 4th type also where they are cold and callous towards others and want to project a nice guy image to others and hope the person leaves so they dont have to pay unemployment insurance. That tends to want to attack this type of message about true low lives in corporate culture.
I remember going to GameStop for an interview when I was in High School. It was odd, they did a group interview with around 12-15 people and the manager said "You see everyone here? Only 2 of you will have the stuff to be a successful employee here, everyone here right now are your rivals. Today, your goal will be to sell me this pen. The 2 that sell it to me the best will be considered being hired, the rest will be let go." I got up along with around 5 others and walked out. While we were walking out, the manager said to the others "Congratulations, you all lost 6 rivals, well, don't celebrate too soon, they were too pathetic to work here anyway." I called the district manager, and like this guy said, they are scum as well, so obviously they didn't care how the managers did their hiring as long as it wasn't illegal.
Idk how you did 11 years at GameStop. I worked there for like 3 weeks and I bounced. I was also 29 hired as a key holder making $9.5/hr. Having made over double than that at my last job (10 years at banana republic, from associate to assistant manager), the pay wasn’t cutting it, the job was mad boring and also the staff at that particular location were like nerd bullies. They were all super nerdy and judged me for not knowing stat trek or Pokémon references. They also hated that I admittedly stated that I didn’t play video games and I just took the job because I needed money. They would be like “why do you even work here if you don’t play video games”. Hated it
I didn’t even know monthly bonuses were a thing in jobs WHAT that’s awesome GameStop even gave anything, 60 bucks is groceries right there I would freaking cry
Hell, we got our quarterly bonus company only hit 25% of the criteria, still was like $125 or $500/yr if you want to extrapolate it it across a whole year
I'm sorry to hear that. I lucked out with my store. I had a great store leader. I still have a great one but our management moved around right before the holidays got into full swing
I think a fun thing would be just during the busiest time when you've had enough just saying as loud as possible to your manager with a huge crowd in the store "NO I'M DONE SCAMMING PEOPLE FOR YOU GREEDY CRETINS, I QUIT!" at least thats what i would do
A was the same in the uk a wanted to work at GAME cause a thought it would be cool to play games sell games and help people choose the right console or pc for them but turns out it’s just like any other job in retail and you targets to sell there stupid loyalty cards disk warranty etc
The few times I ever entered a Gamestop (purely out of boredom and curiosity-- I'm a PC gamer)... The employees always seemed scared of something, like they were being held hostage. Now I know why.
The "shady" practices you're talking about, Camelot331, take place in all corporations I've ever worked for in varying degrees of severity. I've got a few years on you, and if I might offer some advice, hold true to your own principals and hold yourself to a higher level of accountability. If an employer can't handle your integrity, then find another one that is less oppressive, or one that might even reward you for doing, what in your eyes, is the right thing. Good luck to you, young man.
yes, you have a point. sometimes it`s hard though to realise you are being screwed. i always wondered, why they try to push these game cartridge insurance on you with such a persistence, that it is borderline harassment.... They have to realise that is part of why customers don`t buy there!
No one should work at the same retail store for 11 years. Switch it up. Don't try to climb that sort of corporate ladder. Even at a great company you should evaluate your growth around the 3 year mark. Thanks for sharing your experience.
That's what I did. By three years in at my first job (went from part time to full time lead and beginning to train for management) I realized I didn't want to do this for the rest of my life. Happy making so much more money with almost no stress and being treated like a human.
It’s not even a ladder...it’s a corporate pyramid. You’ll NEVER make it to the top even if you spend you’re whole life at once company. And screw GS xD
My first job was GameStop and one was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. And the other one was the worst. The manager was literally a x marine and ran the store like it was the army. I was forced to stay longer hours to do mundane things like alphabetize games, and I ended up getting fired because my manager asked me to stay after work to talk to me and that night his friend came in and he was talking to him but he still wanted me to stay so he could talk to me, and a hour and a half later of sitting there waiting for these two to stop talking, I finally walked over there and was like “excuse me I gotta go did you need to talk to me about something” and he got so mad about interrupting them and yea...that was the real reason I got fired.
I knew this guy in high school that was full of life and just a positive person but I heard he was my local eb games manager. I hardly go there to shop but when I saw him... yea he's gone. Looks pretty beat up. Felt bad for the dude.
@@riseoftheflutes1739 Correct, gamestop is the parent company. EB games is run differently to gamestop though. I do feel like gamestop should be more like EB.
Exactly. Best comment I have seen yet. It's time us consumers took charge and decided where our money goes. We need to stop making purchases from companies that are doing messed up things to it's own customers and or employees.
I've been hearing these GameStop stories for months now and each one just get better and better by telling us how worse this company got every year. I used to dream of working at GameStop but now I'm glad I didn't. Thank God they're about to go out of business.
To be honest, a lot of it is piss poor management combined with misinterpreted company policies. If management focused more on taking care of customers instead pushing shit so hard, it'd be a much better experience.
Over 20 years ago, I had a conversation with a good friend of mine who is a generation older than me about the same things you mentioned in this video. And finally, he told me, “Well what you’re talking about is 1950’s job loyalty, which is good, but it doesn’t exist anymore.” In other words, you can work your ass off for any company today, but the higher ups really don’t care about you.
I worked at my job for a year, never calling in for a sick day and being on time for every single shift. One day, scheduling got mixed up and I was scheduled on one of my off days and I didn't notice in time to alert the managers. When I showed up for the shift after that one, I got pulled into the office and was interrogated on why I was a no show. During that shift I missed, however, no manager called or texted me, not only to see if I was coming in but if I was okay, given a COMPLETELY clean attendance record. I was seriously concerned that if anything happened to me, my work wouldn't contact family to alert them and instead fire me. I quit the next week.
Damn dude. I actually worked at GameStop when I was 17. I’m 25 now, I still go in to GS for hard copies but after hearing this, they’ll be getting no more of my business.
Find a local mom and pop store with titles older than one generation removed and give them your business. That's what I did. Haven't gone to GS since I was 20.
I used to work at a Zumiez and one day the DM was lurking around, doing what they do...making everybody uncomfortable. After he just watched me sell $500 worth of product to a couple, he pulled me aside and chastised me for not implementing an up-selling "strategy" that woulda added a $10 belt to the transaction 🤣 Corporations are never satisfied with employee results.
@Epoch plus5 ....but yes, to answer your question, that's what was expected of us...my point being that management should use discretion in implementing things like *that...I spent over 2 hours with these people, upsold a shit ton of snowboard gear, etc so to hear that while the $500 sale was good, it could have been better if I upsold another $10 lol Props to you, you are officially a good sport youtuber 👍🙏
I worked for GameStop for over 12 years and can attest to the fact this happens at them all. I was a store manager and right before I quit I was being settled for an area manager position. The fact is upper management will allow certain things as long as the stores numbers are good. Can’t tell you how many times upper management had me rip off customers unbeknownst to them. GS is a company that has a lot of behind the doors activities and have numerous stories from the events we would go to every year.
Bro, I worked for Starbucks from 2007-2018 and there are so many similarities between your experiences and mine its crazy. Finally gave in my keys in November and have never felt better!
James Jarrett there isn’t a difference between a job and a career. You’ve been spoonfed, and bought, a lie. You get paid by both. You get perks from both. Both have drawbacks. The only difference in them is what you’ve been told to believe.
James Jarrett The person could’ve gotten the job in high school and worked their way through college/university. Also....doing....this....really doesn’t......get....your point.....across...”lmao”
I’m a little late to this video, but I’ve been working retail for twenty years. I can assure you that these are retail issues, not just GameStop. District managers are the same everywhere...
I was thinking the same thing. I have worked at companies that went under doing things he was talking about. One company's owner threatened people so much that he was left 2 employees when he needed 34. He went to a temp agency for employees, then started threatening them in turn they refused to work there and the agency refused to send anymore people. This caused his company to go out of business. He posted on social media how people were lazy and quick to get their feelings hurt is the reason he went out of business.
Did 10 years as a manager and was fired 2 weeks before raise and bonus payout for the fiscal year for taking a 20 minute break but clocking out for 30 (even though I’m on salary and it doesn’t matter) they then took me to court 3 times for unemployment and lost all 3 times.....good game GameStop......
I was a salary manager for an AT&T store and GameStop bought us out which switched me to hourly. We were warned how bad the company was but we didn’t listen.
Dont ever EVER work for gamestop. 12 years wasted and was fired from one day to the next. Total lack of management and the company is dying. Don't apply!!! leave them to slowly die out as they should. Its like a black hole that sucks you in and sucks the life out of you, giving you no motivation to do anything with your life
I swear must of the time I go to Gamestop (which is not a lot) all the employess are either gullible fresh out of high school nerds who have no clue whats going on, fat depressed men who think they are cool cause they dyed a streak of hair green or the manager in the back with the goatee who think he's living the big boss life cause hes making 30k a year. lol
Rifat K lol yes they did. Think they got me way back during Xmas. I don’t game on console but bought a ps4 and 3 games for my nephews that yr and probably didn’t notice the extra charge.
You probably stuck around for 11 years because it's NATURAL for us to fall into that. Even when the job doesn't feel secure, you're THERE, you like the people, and you're getting a paycheck. It takes a lot to compel someone to just walk away from that. So don't beat yourself up for it, dude. Folks who have never worked at GameStop, he's right on the money about all of it. I started in 2008, and like this dude, became an ASM in 2010 and a SM in 2012. I didn't last 'til 2018, though...I was out in 2015. Why? Well, anyone who didn't "play ball" (shady sales tactics, talking back to DMs about ideas, etc) was sent to a low volume store in January of 2015 in my district. We had a HUGE staff full of very experienced (and highly paid, relative to newbies) staff in the lowest volume store in the district, which made zero sense until you put 2 and 2 together to see that the plan was to bypass waiting for a REASON to terminate us and simply cattle us all in a store they planned to close...which they did the following May. Severance for all. Like this guy said, I met some of the best friends I'll ever have there, and the customers were freaking amazing most of the time, but being told to take advantage of them, then being punished by offering honest pushback about that idea...it was miserable. I don't know anyone from my story who isn't better off now than they were when we were together at GameStop.
Camelot, this channel and these gamestop videos completely justify you working all those years at gamestop! You're helping so many gaming and non gaming consumers by shining a light on all of gamestop's BS. Thank you!
This reminds me of when I worked at Blockbuster. Flexible hours that were great for college, but the overbearing management and negative reinforcement turned a chill job into more stress than it was worth. I thought I'd just be a cashier and talk movies with people. Instead it was constant pressure to sell whatever membership deals they had, and then also people yelling at me because they returned their movies late and had a fee, as if I personally was the one making the late fee policy hehe.
I used to work in a mall and had a great relationship with the first managers, then over the years they kept getting new staff regularly . No wonder people kept quitting or fired .
To be fair, Blockbuster didn't go out of business for ripping people off, they went out of business due to the nature of renting movies. I was a teenager and advent gamer during the rise of redbox. We lived 0.5 miles from McDonalds' redbox, meanwhile, Blockbuster was 6 miles away. See where I'm going? My dad was also an advent pirater of movies and found it easier to pirate the redbox movies bc Blockbuster had these ridiculous prevention measures on their discs. Soon after the expensive unlimited movie and game membership at Blockbuster was cancelled. I really do miss that place.
Back in the day it wasnt THAT bad.It.was bad, trade in values were poor but it wasnt exagerated meme levels. Today the exageratted meme levels from a.few years.ago are reality
Late reply, but wanted to comment. That employee is an ahole but saved you from dealing with that place. I have all PS systems and still play PS3 and PS2. So anyone at a game store who says that is a jackass. Heck, still pull out my Super Nintendo from time to time. A good game is still a good game no matter how old or the platform it's on.
I remember when I was in my early teen years, I was captivated by the thought of working at Gamestop. As somebody who loved games, why not work at a place that revolves around them? These days Gamestop is a shitshow of abusive employers and customer exploitation. Gamestop is basically Hot Topic these days anyway, with pop culture merchandise occupying most of the store, and games being relegated to a couple shelves.
My GameStop in the next town over has been fine to me in the years that I've been a customer there. Walmart's selection and turnover rate are shit, and I'm paranoid about online purchases.
This 1000%. What's the point of having a million funko pops if you're not even willing to put them up for a reasonable price. Gamestop is selling pops for $12 while Walmart and Target sells them for $9
@@dahken417 I can understand that. Online purchases while I do like them can be pretty sketchy or cost more than going to gamestop or other game stores.
i mean, that's actually the same feeling I have because i always have the fear of getting fired from gamestop, i worked there for 4 months as an SGA, and i have been asking myself.. "Can i even do this anymore?" Like, i dont wanna lose a job that worked so hard for especially when management really takes us over completely.. but i dont know what to do. i felt like quitting mainly..
My GameStop is right next to Walmart there controller was $80 for a pre-owned so I said f*** that and I went to Walmart and I got a new controller for $50 #scam
I did the same for Elder Scrolls Online. Went to Gamestop, bought it used for $45. Went next door to Walmart and decided to take a look at the price of the game and it was the same price brand new. Next day returned the game and had the store manager lecture me about how they're not a video rental store and I can't just decide to return games if I don't like them (the excuse I gave about why I returned the game). Never returned. Also never returned since before that the same SM treated white people different from black people, which I wasn't OK with, as in he would treat every black person with care and would give them the best experience while treating white people like they were wasting his time.
If you worked there for 11 years you didnt waste your time. If anything you have 11 years of customer service experience, 11 years of retail experience.
no he did waste his time he stayed in an entry level job regardless if he was manager still entry level for 11 years theres only so much you can learn there most of the employees are young and unskilled
Same thing for CarMax I was a buyer for ten yrs fresh out of college and it was the most toxic environment I’ve ever been in from all angles. It was a horrible place.
Dude!! Went in to buy ocarina of time on 3DS, hadn’t bought a game there in at least 2-3 years. And yeah I literally said no thank you like 3 times. About buying other games, buying a switch Pikachu edition with added crap I didn’t want, and naturally because I didn’t want to give my phone number
And people wonder why Amazon is taking over retail. Because of this horseshit here. You give me a retailer that sells a TV that will provide thoughtful, honest, and educated opinions of the choices they offer and I'll tell you a business that will be destroyed by big box stores. For real, support your local retailers.
@whiterthan hitler same here on the north west side of Chicago..I remember going to local mom and pop shops in the late 90s early 2000s when I was a kid, and the next thing I remember seeing was Wal-Mart showing up, and destroying all these small retailers..I literally started seeing the same mom and pop shop buisnesses working at Walmart..
When I was at gamestop, I tried to provide helpful info and opinions but I was told to cut that shit out because it meant we weren't selling a pricier game or god forbid the pricier console. I was also accused of information overload for being able to state basic facts about a console that I thought were important for this person to know if they were going to drop $400+ on something. I was told to cut this shit out too because then this person might leave the store without a console or w/e and think about it instead of impulse buying which was what they were going for. I listened, then they told me I had poor customer service skills and was unhelpful, lol I got outta there asap.
PS5 and next gen XBOX have already announced there will be no downloads or discs, streaming only. its been said by the developers multiple times, Gamestop makes money from only resells, they make nothing from new game purchases, they're going to crash hard for good.
Atleast he got that even if for a whole year. I have worked many jobs where you dont get a bonus of any kind, no holidays off, no company holiday dinners, nothing but your hourly pay. You get paid for what you work and if you dont like it dont let the door hit your ass on the way out. The problem is American is not the land of the free is anymore. Its the land of the corporations. Retail was the worst job I ever had.

It's the same theme at most retail stores;
Goals being set impossibly high
Pressure from management to do unethical things to reach said goals
New policies being made by corporate people who have never stepped foot in their own brick and mortar stores
Regional managers being paid the most for doing the least work
Playing games with your hours and income

I'm at a big dollar store chain. It's 100% this right now, everybody is pissed.
I'd generally work like 10am-3pm a few days a week in the men's store, generally the Home section. I'd be lucky if I checked out 10-15 people a a day if it wasn't a Saturday. You're right.
All my local gamestops only seem to hire mildly overweight women that know nothing about vidya. I'd call that another issue on the pile.

“You’re just not in it anymore. You should probably resign”.
Wow.

While we were walking out, the manager said to the others "Congratulations, you all lost 6 rivals, well, don't celebrate too soon, they were too pathetic to work here anyway." Idk how you did 11 years at GameStop.

Your manager sounded like a jackass. It was a blessing in disguise that you got fired. Hopefully things are better for you now.
