- I typically don’t get too excited about new handguns these days. Maybe I’ve tested too many. Maybe I’m just getting a bit jaded. That being said, when...

This video needed to happen!! I'm tired of the "guntuber" experts talkin smack about a wonderful firearm from one of the best 1911 manufactures to grace our planet. The prodigy is an amazing firearm. I own the 5" and have recommended it to everyone I know. I've taken the time, as a gunsmith, to work through minor items that every 1911 shares at some level and have had great success. If you need a box gun buy a non-1911. 1911s are in need of regular care and basic maintenance, regardless of the manufacturer. Thank you for doing this video and showing the truths.
Not true. My Atlas hasn’t needed a single thing out of the bag.. sure if your comparison is cheap 1911s they all have problems but a perfected 2011 from Atlas, Nighthawk, TTI will run thousands of rounds with nothing but a little lube.
Springfield makes some of the most sub par 1911s on the market Tisas literally makes better ones for half the price but you are correct if you buy a cheap 1911 they will eventually need some tuning and care if you buy a high quality 1911 it will need nothing more than oil and springs replaced at the required intervals
Hard to not talk smack on a firearm that has FTF and FTE every other shot with its factory mags lol
Do you happen to know what shoukd be replaced on it. I also have the 5" model and habe heard that it has "non machined" parts that need replaced in less than 4000 rounds. Can I get your opinion?
@@devonjones4648 Hello sir, this ultimately boils down to personnel choice. I polished the feed lips on the magazines for more efficient feed and moved to a 10 lb guide rod spring. In addition, 10-8 Performance has some upgrade parts that have been made for the Prodigy, its a good source. If you are looking to replace other parts, check the Wilson Combat "bullet proof" parts. These are expensive but are truly the best manufactured. Ultimately, 1000 rnds are needed for the minimum break in period, polishing internals, and some minor upgrades to parts make all the difference.
I'm impressed with how you went about testing this gun for us. This video is the only one that let's us see to believe.
My first thought was “no way he’s going to run all those rounds on camera.” 5min later “oh. Nvm.” Just earned a sub 🤝🏼
I bought the 4.25 version of this gun, went through 200 rounds with no issues but noticeable disconnector friction against the slide. I didn’t do much research before buying the gun but during the waiting period I started watching videos and was getting worried. I bought Staccato mags and used them from the first shot based on some of the advice from Guntubers. I’ve had the Ronin from SA previously and loved it so not a hater. I ultimately took the gun to a local high end custom 1911 builder to get their reliability tuning package, to have the MIM parts replaced and to get DLC applied. They told me they’d already had 5 other Prodigys in for work. So, take all that for what it’s worth. I didnt really NEED the work but I wanted to be sure I’ll be totally happy with the pistol long term.
How much did that package run?
@@SS-ek5lz All together would have been about $950. Turns out the shop forgot to send it for DLC after the work was done and I was tired of waiting which left me owing $550 for the tuning and trigger job. Cycles like a dream by hand. Still waiting for a return to the range.
Great video. I only have about 300 rounds through mine so far and had the same failure to feed as you and I was cowboying a little with it so I am not blaiming the awesome prodigy. I love this pistol so far and the more you shoot it and / or manual cycle it and keep it lubed the smoother the slide gets. Along side my 300 rounds I have 400 cycles dry firing it with my Mantis Laser Academy and Mantis x10. Keep the great content coming.
I was going to pick up the STACCATO C, but bought the 4.25 Prodigy because of the price difference and save the money to buy accessories for the gun. I oiled the gun a couple of times and racked it 500 times and there was a lot of gunk thinking it’s probably the Cerakote from the factory. I ran 300 & no problem. Hope I can get 10k like yours to prove its reliability.. That’s Crazy.
Wow, What a great investment in time . Thank you for showing us it can be done. subbed
It was sent to you by SA, but was it selected blindly or did they tweak it first?
I noticed that the gun started with the standard green fiber optic front sight at the start of the video, but at the end of the video, it has red.
Not claiming it to be a different gun, but I am suspecting it fell off at some point, cause when I put over a 1000 rounds through mine, it also came loose. As did the plate screws, which I never touched.
What else was changed that wasn't mentioned in the video, if anything?
I noticed that. At 1535 the green looked almost melted...the change happens at 1552.
Probably melted the fiber. If you've ever replace one you actually use heat to melt the ends slightly to lock it in place.
@@thorsmith59 I'm inclined to believe that's what happened in the video, but for me it fell out as a solid stick, still cool to the touch. I wasn't torture testing mine after all, but I did put close to 500 rounds in it within a 4ish hour time frame.
Read the blog post about this review. The stock green one melted, so he replaced it with the red one for the rest of the testing.
I personally don't care if these guns have issues, I still want one. Preferably a 5 inch model. If it has issues I'll deal with it because I want this gun to succeed.
Nothing a gunsmith a Springfield themselves can’t fix
@jasielm5258 I just realized I should clarify my comment. I didn't mean that I would personally deal with/fix any issues the gun has, if any. By "dealing" with it I meant sending it to Springfield Armory for them to work on.
@@garrettdunyon4505facts folks in a echo chamber crying when it has lifetime warranty but rather cry and do it them selves or have bubba down by the river do some bs to it and void the warranty
If your on the fence about the Springfield prodigy in my opinion get the 4.25 and it will be awesome.
Be interesting to know if it was a random pick off the shelf or sent by SA knowing it was gonna be tested. Also it would’ve been interesting to bench it for accuracy at the start then at the end to see how the barrel held up.
I would suspect a handpicked model. I have one and it does shoot nice and has a pretty good trigger. It is currently being worked over by SA due to failures to extract and the mag catch chewing up the notch on the mags.( never had that one before)
Im sure it was handpicked
Id bet it was hand picked, but imo, it shows that as long as youre willing to deal with the slight inconvenience of sending yours back to SA (assuming you have issues) to have them work on it, itll run.
I have the 4” and it is flawless. Quit hatin.
@@SuperGlenn1966 I have the 5" and I sent it back to the Factory for occasional failures to extract(about every 3rd magazine or so. They performed their usual round of polishing etc... and oh yeah we tuned the extractor. When I got it back I couldn't get through a magazine without multiple failures to extract. Replaced the extractor with a Wilson and tuned it myself and yeah now it runs flawlessly!
Honestly man I love this gun but it def took some work before it was reliable. I wonder if you just got a “special one” or if SA just started making them better.
I would imagine they fixed all the issues with the original.
Sage Dynamics just posted on instagram how his has been the worst 2011/1911 ds he’s even had yesterday. Seems the 5” is the better out of the 2. SA will get it right sooner than later I’d imagine.
Definitely a cherry picked gun for the test. Not his fault, and hard to blame SA for it.
I'm glad to see a positive review of this gun that (I assume) wasn't bought and paid for, or (again I assume) the gun wasn't cherry picked by Springfield. (of course it's possible it was cherry picked, but benefit of the doubt is given) Hopefully, the sales of this gun will bring the prices down on such guns. The performance of the Prodigy in other reviews was lackluster at best. Lets hope it turns around.
A lot of the folks commenting clearly don't realize that Springfield literally owns and runs this channel, LOL. Armory Life is an unbranded channel. All the reviews are for Springfield products or accessories that work with SA products. So this is not some unbiased review like you guys think 😂.
Having said the above, I own the 4.25. Had some kinks but I sent it in to Springfield and they worked them out. Gun is gtg. The Duramags are cheap ($35 at my LGS) and perform accordingly. They don't drop cleanly and contributed to some of my initial issues. Would not recommend.
I bought the 4” inch version. Mine has been flawless. I am putting the crimson trace red dot on mine. Anyone who has bought one “optic ready” be advised you have to purchase some 6-48 screws to mount the optic to the plate. Love this pistol. Went to a gun store Saturday and they now have 26 round mags available.
I have the 4.25 prodigy and have to say I love it!!! Got it at my local gunshot for a really good price. No lie I thought for the price I was going to have misfeeds or failure to extract but for 1100 wow I was so wrong,. Shoots like a champ 🏆 shot only a thousand and ran flawless. Can't wait to go threw another thousand rounds. Just need to get a RMR or a RSO for it.
I have the 4.25” and mounted the SRO mostly because it blocks the loaded chamber indicator keeping my glass super clean
@@jonn8163this is why I went with sro too
Any fte that’s y I stay away from Sro
Nearly ALL of the reviews I have seen on this gun have shown typical Gen 1 problems that will require design tweaks. I was lusting for this gun but have now switched to the purchase of a Staccato.
I can't wait till I can get myself a 4.25" one in my hands!
So they sent it to you, mine made it to about 100 had three failures to extract, ran flawless other than that for the 200 rounds I ran so far, only gripe I have is there optic plate protection sucks, sick of manufacturers pushing optics of their choice these days, make the plates for all of them already, and optics companies stop changing bases.
Always funny when people say "it ran flawlessly except for the handful of malfunctions." Makes no sense
Playback speed set at: 0.25 for *almost* normal speed 😄
This video was necessary, thanks for the content, Sir. Insta-subbed 🙏
What grain ammunition are you shooting in this video? Thanks
Finally something worth Watching 👀😌!
Nice video, thanks for posting.
How is the fit and finish after 10k rounds. I mean the rails and so on. Is there much abrasion on the cerakote?
I have a bit of abrasion of the Cerakote on the rails after 600 rounds. Not a problem at all. Actually improves the slide function.
Do you have a merit for that switch 😂😂😂 had to watch this again great video
I wanted to like this, but just too much hit and miss with this one. Some are ok, most need to go back to springfield, I just went with the staccato p instead to avoid the what if and hope not of this one.
I agree with the guy that made comments before me so many biased videos on this gun it is a great gun I have both staccato and prodigy the prodigy runs right with the staccato I have the 4.25 model I haven't had any issues so far if I do I will send it back they will fix it for free its that simple good video thxs.
Springfield literally owns this channel. Not figuratively, but literally. If you go through the other videos, they only spotlight SA guns and/or their accessories.
Why not just run it till it breaks?
not a torture test if u lubing gun every 500 or so we need u to run the 10k consecutive with out changing anything
🤡
Plot twist: this is just him shooting in real time
Can it survive mud test?
Good review. Start posting on Rumble.
I remember I spent alot of money on the 1# optic said it was amazing and it wasn't and have seen few things with 100% 5 stars so it is what it is and if Springfield can fix it let them problem solved
I'm a springfield man! If they chamber in 40 S/W I will own one.
Wow that's amazing I wonder if it's chambered in a 45
Wouldn’t hold my breath for a 40s&w, but 45 acp is likely.
I’ll pass on the Forty Short & Weak, but if it came in 10mm, I might think about it.
The allure of the 2011 in the first place is high volume rapid fire with the SWEET 1911 trigger and virtually no muzzle jump or significant recoil.
I'm right there with ya. If they come up with a 40 like Para did that would be awesome!
Will it be your next carry choice is the question because I would trust that gun you shot with my life frfr.
The essence of the video is to watch you shoot the gun. Why would you speed that up?
$1500-$2500 worth of ammo...ouch
Others dont need to buy one we who have it our treasure i have 5" amazing and accurate
I have one on lay a way at my local gun club
I just goughr my 5in after watching all the bad reviews. I went to the range and shot 500 rounds with no problems. I believe Springfield fix most the problem or im just lucky and got a good 1 lol
Got a 5 had a week no issue going to put another 250 tomorrow people be hating
Have a embassy in 45 . Very nice
i counted you only shot 9999 rds
250 round oiling and 500 round cleaning? Any gun for this price better run with these cleaning and oiling intervals. I can’t say I am impressed.
You're not gonna find another 2011 at this price point that remotely compares, period.
@@livinroomlongshanksBul shit.. I mean bul armory
@@peterharmon7852 oh yeah, let's talk about, since you think you know what you're talking about. You can pick up a 5" prodigy for $1200. Bul Armory AINT COMING CLOSE to that price, period. Move along now, child.
@@livinroomlongshanks lol maybe by a few hundred bucks. Have fun calling people on the internet children. Don’t be mad at me your a brokie.. not my fault
@@livinroomlongshanks you can get an sas for 1800 on gunbroker so yeah it’s $600 different. If that’s that big of a dealbreaker maybe you should focus more on your career and less on expensive hobbies
I have a Springfield and to blow air in the chamber at 250 rounds and lube at 500 rounds is a joke. I have 10mm longslide with just basic oiling every 500 rounds and no issues. This is a 9mm, shoots soft and should not require all this maintenance. Should go 1k rounds with factory lube
more like any range day just named the video taking the gun to range for 3 days cause this is not a torture test
I have not had ur luck with mine so far.
I sent mine back to SA. They worked on it and it’s my EDC now. Runs great after several thousand rounds through it.
Mine had issues too for 4.25 DS. But I didn't sent it back to SA. Instead watched some RUclips videos for full disassembly and polished the internals. 3 hours of work and thereafter, zero issues. Shot close to 1500 rds after the polishing job with mostly fmj and about couple hundred rounds of Federal HST 147 gr and no issues.
Wow! ONLY 99.999% reliable what a piece of junk! I can see how you might not want to keep such an unreliable firearm. You should just send it to me.
On a side note. If you ever need some help with a 10k torture test hit me up. I would love the practice.
DS stands for doesn’t shoot
By the time you replace parts in your Prodigy you probably could have bought a Staccato.,
his poor hands and arms =(
🤌🏼
😂 😂 😂
This gun is so unreliable.
Eh kinda annoying lol
Hope us here in commiefornia can get our own someday! Not just LEO's....
They shouldn't be able to call a gun a 1911 unless it's a .45, instead, call it a 1911 imitation in 9mm.
I would disagree. With todays metallurgy, 9mm is a very effective cartridge. You wouldn’t have the wounds seen with todays 9mm when this pistol was patented. The low recoil, high velocity 9mm, with increased capacity is a fantastic option for a 1911 style pistol. And as of this posts timing, .45 ain’t cheap.
@@tpajason Once again, ignorance and ego raises it ugly head. J. M. Browning designed the gun as a 9mm. the Department of the ARMY had it changed to .45. J>M> Browning is a legendary Gun God. The Department of the Army, Well , not so much! They screw up regularly!
I own 9mm and .45 in high end 1911's. I can shoot the 9mm much faster! But I love the push the .45 provides. I find it less snappy that the 9mm.
So in true historical history, the .45 was really the imitation of the original. LOL!
KnifeMaker
I own one hitting 3k on it no problems. Just hate
