    Fun fact: Chino can absolutely reach her notes. On a Tour in Asia back in 2011, Chino sang her parts and even screeched like a f**kin eagle during her whistle screams, which BLEW everyone's minds. I was so lucky to have witnessed it.

    Honestly one of the best rock songs ever written. And the vocal performance by Rodleen Getsic is definitely one of the best ones ever recorded. I always kinda thought Knife Prty was Deftones reaction to Pink Floyd's The Great Gig in the Sky.

    Every time I listen to this song (no matter how many times I’ve heard it) and it raises such emotion in me. Every time I hear that woman’s voice I feel such passion, rage, and sorrow. The screaming was so therapeutic to me in a period of great sadness in my life. Ugh I can’t handle this song and I love it so much
    …I could float here forever

      Also, this song is very reminiscent of the great gig in the sky by Pink Floyd. A continuation of a similar idea of handing a hugely important piece of the song to a singer who will make it feel like something that no one else in the band would be capable of bringing.

    I saw them when they toured on this album. When they played this one, I made my way all the way up to the front, and Chino was crouched down at the edge of the stage reaching into the crowd. The man reached out and grabbed my extended hand, giving me one of the coolest moments in my 19 year old life and cementing Knife Prty as one of my favorite songs.

  • @drakocarrion
    @drakocarrion Год назад +37

    It's definitely the case in my experience that a drummer who can make the drums actually FEEL like an instrument as opposed to just a time keeping device makes or breaks a band. Jimmy Chamberlain is another great example.

    • @CedricJustice
      @CedricJustice Год назад +1

      There are so many. John Stanier from Helmet makes those early works. Danny Carey is the entire feeling of Tool. Sean Kinney is incredible keeping Alice in Chains together. Hell, John Bonham and Zeppelin.... I could go on forever. Drummers make a band. The Cure with Boris Williams is some of their best material. Without him... Great, but not AS great.

      @@CedricJustice exactly. it's one of the reasons why i cite ringo as an example of why he is influential. he is the template of what a drummer should be in terms of feel. his fills help the songs be identifiable. i recently watched a video with the black crowes and the new band they have as their drummer is just horrible. he's got no feel at all. i was appalled. without steve gorman, there is no black crowes.

    I know this is a lot of people's favorite Deftones song, and for personal reasons it wasn't one of my favorites at first. However, I had the same sort of journey as Ixi did with the screaming part, because after years of paying more attention to the lyrics than the music I noticed how impressive and haunting the screaming was and I got curious about it. I always just brushed it off as Chino doing it, probably putting some effects on it to hit those really high notes, and then thought maybe it was an effect mixing with the guitar and then found out it was a performance from a woman named Rodleen Getsic. Then I realized I knew her from The Bunny Game, which is an intense movie where she goes to unreasonable lengths for the role. I don't recommend watching the movie, I somehow came across it on RUclips a while back, and at best it's a complicated film with mixed messages but a chilling performance by Getsic who was physically harmed and maimed for it, and at worst it's a borderline snuff film. She suffers for her art, and her role in this song just makes it all the more chilling.

    Another thing to note that during the verses, Chino sings sharp between an A to Bb commonly close to a quarter step between those notes, and every instrument within the whole song stands out in their own way, which is really unique, kind of similar to what Passenger is. This whole album still bangs.

    The guitar melody on this one really defines the song, but the bass is super loud and gainy almost like a hum throughout the whole song.
    Abe meanwhile is treating this song like a long solo and it's awesome lol
    "The mid section has amazing vocals from a girl called Rodleen who worked next door to our studio" - Chino
    Rodleen Getsic is a singer and actress from Washington that happened to be recording next door during the White Pony sessions and caught the bands attention. It's been long theorized that her voice is digitized and heavily distorted during the high bits, but seeing her sing live with the band she is in fact able to sing into her scream register.
    Lyrics: The song is about a secret society that uses knives for sexual rituals and gets off on cutting and violence. The character in the story and the woman dance and have sex until they both climax represented by the screaming.
    Apparently it was inspired by a weird party on tour when the band and roadies on the tour bus all grabbed knives out of Abe's Blade collection and started ritualistically dancing with them. (possibly while high)
