I read an interview with producer Terry Date where he said something along the lines of Digital Bath being his proudest moment when it comes to drum sound, maybe with the exception of the opening snare hit of My Own Summer. Abe doesn’t get enough love, either. I never hear his name in discussions or lists of best drummers, but he is definitely in that category. Way underrated!
It's interesting that someone could be proud of the production on a single snare hit, but I understand exactly why. That opening hit is absolutely perfect.
it's actually so delightful to see when another person in the internet reacts equally to the same moments in this song because you both think they're awesome
This song actually changed my life. I was like a metal/prog kid growing up, but I heard this song and I was like “that’s the coolest thing I’ve ever heard.” I had no idea heavy music could be this beautiful and moody. And Abe is one of the most underrated drummers of all time if you ask me!
As a teenager i could not handle this album at all. It was so emotional it made me uncomfortably vulnurabale every time would listen to it, like it gets your soul naked.
For a long time I would only start the album at Elite. And only after Pink Maggit I was ready for this song. Your comment totally resonates with my experience listening to this
Some albums you can only listen to in your house alone with the curtains closed. And not because you don't want the neighbors knowing you like The Scorpions. 😂😂
What i love about these type of reactions is that the reviewer is obviously technically proficient and understands music theory, but more importantly seems to just love music, and that teslly shines through. Great to watch
This and Knife Prty have always been my favorite tracks on this album. I also consider Beauty School from Diamond Eyes to be a sort of spiritual successor to Digital Bath.
I also love the vocals that lean in...MORE than lean in, twist the knife on the dissonance. Nobody does this like Deftones. I love how radiohead quietly disembowels your with the sharpest of scalpels, but sometimes I want to hear somebody gutted with a battle axe.
I think steff is a large part of that too. No criticism, cos I love his riffs, but he really has no clue what he's doing theory wise, it's just like 'this is where to put my fingers to give the absolute most crushing, dissonant sounds possible
Always knew there was SOMETHING different about their music, so cool to hear someone like you tell me exactly why that is! Wish Chino could hit that note live tho :(
Love your work! You are covering allllll of my favorite bands. Unbelievable. Radiohead, NIN, Tool, DEFTONES…these are some of the first bands I fell in love with. Really enjoying this
I love how White Pony marked a shift towards a Deftones that wanted to spread its wings and expand beyond the confines of where they were during their earlier albums.
This was such a triumphant album despite Chinito having to take it real easy because he just recovered from an embolism he gave himself from screeching like a nutjob all the time. It managed being a whole new sound while still being the signature Deftones sound we'd all grown to love by that point. The acoustic version of this song is absolutely sublime.
i just listened to Digital Bath for the first time last night and I just opened youtube today and the first video on my feed is this one! great song, great video. liked and subscribed
When I was a little kid, Dave Grohl was my one drum hero. Around age 10 or so I discovered Deftones. Abe Cunningham has been my favourite drummer ever since. His playing is so tasteful, creative, inspiring, dynamic. He does everything I want to hear the drums do. There are of course other drummers that inspire me for different reasons, but Abe just hits my soul in an entirely different way.
SO incredibly happy to see you doing some Deftones videos! Digital Bath would have to be one of my all time favorite tracks from their entire catalogue, so heavy but flows like silk. Loved the video and I'm excited for more Deftones content haha :)
BRUH!!! "Passenger" and than that goes right into "Change".......... ohh my god! Can I suggest a double video for these? Just a thought. Totally LOVE all your things.
Btw the drum beat in the beginning of the track was probably the first part I sampled and still to this day use the kick and snare samples (a lil processed) in one of my two goto kits. And yes! Frank Delgado absolutely changed my understanding on what can be done to add texture to a rock/metal track on this record and mostly this track and Change. Instead of the usual wicky-wah scratching turntablists of nu metal bands, he added this subtle presence of texture, giving the Deftones the final piece of the puzzle that created their super unique sound (after chinos voice of course, Carpenters jet-engine heavy guitar tone, and the air tight crisp drums)
It's so hard to pick a favorite Deftones tune, so many good ones! I think my top ones are this one, Xerxes, Entombed and Sextape but I like almost all of their stuff. They are very unique. Nice analysis!
They really like the half choruses the first time in. Give you enough of a taste but not too much and then the release when they do a full chorus or extensions - so good.
I'm getting song requests in the comments so wanted you to know I take requests on the Patreon livestream at the end of each month! October's will be themed for dark/creepy/scary music: www.patreon.com/iximusic
what I find so amazing about Abe's drum groove in the verse is how he puts the off-beat accents on the hi-hat. Its so subversive and makes the groove really stand out 😔👌
totally. That's not easy to coordinate either with a groove like this. He's amazing. Also didn't even realize at the time but this sounds like a linear groove!
Ok, so…subscribing based on your Deftones analysis. Of course, I’ll be checking out your other content, but I honestly felt some Rad vibes here! Your heartfelt reaction, and enthusiasm concerning this Amazing song, did not go unnoticed! Great job!
This album really changed my attitude to music and opened my eyes (and ears) to how a band, a group of talented individuals, could sound so unique in a genre of cookie-cutter metal bands of that era. White Pony is a masterpiece! Love watching you reacting to these songs and taking so much care and effort to dissect them (with respect and passion) to reveal their mastery. Thank you!
I was going to make a comment about the song but you said it best @4:30. I was lucky enough to see them when they toured White Pony in 2000-2001 and even more lucky to hear this song live when Chino was at his pinnacle imo.
My first time listening to this, I was fresh out of basic training and I was in a pitch-black barracks room after arriving my first night in Fort Hood. This song got me through the fear.
Again in this, above all of it, Abe shines like, wow. I'm so glad to hear you talking about him, because I feel (even if that may sound arrogant), he can only touch a real musician heart. I mean, the precision of each hit, every single damn hit is musical, full with intention and brillance. All of this creates an organic feel that is unparalleled in the rock scene. I honestly could have tears concentrating to his playing.
This is definitely my favorite song by deftones. When I was at the peak of my suicidal depression in my teenage years, this song was often there for me. This song means everything to me.
Those first two guitar chords remind me of the main theme in the new Batman movie (with Robert Pattinson). And I've heard that is based on a funeral march?
Your explorations feel so much like the stripped down version they did, that `outer space` thing. Check it out if you aren’t familiar, it’s my favorite version
I’ve often wondered about the ‘droplets’ sound @ 21:10 I’ve got an old digital Korg multi effects guitar pedal that has a patch called Aqua that makes the same noise. Bit of a coincidence I’d say.
Just found this series and I'm gonna watch it all through. White Pony is my all time fav album. Would love to see your take on the Black Stallion remixes with the 20th anniversary edition. I felt like a few of the tracks were way off the mark and don't retain enough of the original, but there's a few that absolutely slap
White Pony is the album I bought 5 times. Red and Black limited edition CD, promo vinyl, promo CD, and 4x vinyl remaster. And I'll buy it 10 more times if they even remotely remix it another .01db.
another cool fact about the drums - this is a linear groove, meaning only one drum is hit at any given time. Most drum grooves aren't like that. Abe is awesome at these linear grooves!
Very late to the party... but does anyone else recognize The Batman main theme in the opening chords? Same! And if you extend them a bit... Imperial March... Great video!!
This song is %100 about death and beyond... Or just the mystical experiences that life can reward when you're a good boy. We could even bring AI into this.
The Anix does a fantastic cover of Digital Bath. Highly suggest!!! If I'm not mistaken, White Pony was written when deftones were living in Cleveland. Steph even appears on Chimaira's first album on the song Rizzo.
They've lived in northern california their entire lives. And most of their albums were recorded in the west coast. You're probably thinking of another band
@@isajmody2344 Yeah don't bother, you were right. I just looked up it here on yt. They were definitely living in cleveland when they were writing material for the album. They're california natives (and still are) though.
Always loved this one, dreamy and very melodic despite the heavy guitars and drums. Really cool sounding song with F'd up lyrics. Like some NIN songs it's best to not think too much about the lyrics if you enjoy the song. This song is about a sexual fantasy of electrocuting a woman in a bathtub...
Get a little handheld bluetooth speaker with good bass and clear audio, and put this song on loud, then put the speaker between the back of your neck and a pillow. Leave a bit of space to not muffle the sound.

Might I suggest an analogue BUBBLEbath?
This song actually changed my life. I was like a metal/prog kid growing up, but I heard this song and I was like “that’s the coolest thing I’ve ever heard.” I had no idea heavy music could be this beautiful and moody. And Abe is one of the most underrated drummers of all time if you ask me!
Love the drumming in this song. Abe is so god damn funky and does all the subtle stuff that makes a drum part complete
As a teenager i could not handle this album at all. It was so emotional it made me uncomfortably vulnurabale every time would listen to it, like it gets your soul naked.

Yes! Digital Bath and Knife Party!
I also love the vocals that lean in...MORE than lean in, twist the knife on the dissonance. Nobody does this like Deftones. I love how radiohead quietly disembowels your with the sharpest of scalpels, but sometimes I want to hear somebody gutted with a battle axe.

Always loved the intensity of this track. Plus the guest vocals from Megatron's right hand man Soundwave
That's a fantastic way to put it regarding deftones Vs Radiohead - great comparison!
My own summer: I have the best drum intro of any deftones song
Digital bath: hold my snare
lol
Always knew there was SOMETHING different about their music, so cool to hear someone like you tell me exactly why that is! Wish Chino could hit that note live tho :(
This drumtrack is a Masterclass on linear drumming!
GET OUT OF MY HEAD! DEFTONES IS MY FAVORITE BAND!!!! I'm so thrilled that you have covered my FAVORITES!!!!!

"Finding his place in these in-between places" Chino effing Moreno! :)

I am going to end all my conversations on the b6 - ALWAYS!
Nin and now deftones?…you are a kindred spirit x great track
When I was a little kid, Dave Grohl was my one drum hero. Around age 10 or so I discovered Deftones. Abe Cunningham has been my favourite drummer ever since. His playing is so tasteful, creative, inspiring, dynamic. He does everything I want to hear the drums do.

This brought me to tears, this song means so much to me
This is the first Deftones song I ever heard, I was 14 or 15, it would give me shivers.
BRUH!!! "Passenger" and than that goes right into "Change".......... ohh my god! Can I suggest a double video for these? Just a thought. Totally LOVE all your things.
Chi (on bass) always used to drop dissonant chromatic bendy stuff on top that just gave their stuff that edgy feeling. so wrong but so right
RE the guitar effect where you're in space...
I always imagined that part being wet, and dark.
Btw the drum beat in the beginning of the track was probably the first part I sampled and still to this day use the kick and snare samples (a lil processed) in one of my two goto kits.

your analyses have made me appreciate deftones more
this is one of my all-time favorite songs by deftones. it is this beautiful mix of metal and shoegaze.
The way he sings away… I can’t get enough!
I started crying from the moment the chorus started, this song is sooo unbelievably beautiful
They really like the half choruses the first time in. Give you enough of a taste but not too much and then the release when they do a full chorus or extensions - so good.

It's just unbelievable. Mankind needs more of this kind of dissection of the 2003 album, or at least some of the songs :)))
Baby making music for sure

I DID NOT NOTICE THE COLD WHISTLE UNTIL YOU SAID IT, now it's all I can hear!
When I first heard this, particularly the screech launching out of the break, I thought to myself, "Who thinks of something this brilliant?"
Really digging the series. Listening at a new level based on the analysis.
This was so fun. Thank you!
I was going to make a comment about the song but you said it best @4:30.

One of their best hands down. The mood is impeccable

Those linear patterns that Abe do are so unique

would love to see you going ham on the vocals one day
Abe is always doing something more interesting than you think. Amazing drummer
Love your page, your taste and style. You are amazing 🫶🏼
That dreamy eternity floating towards extacy. No start no end just presence of weightlessness and inclusiveness of all. Come aboard. Nice job my dear!
For me its definitely the highlight of the album
When he hits those highs 👌🏻👌🏻😩😩😩
Those first two guitar chords remind me of the main theme in the new Batman movie (with Robert Pattinson). And I've heard that is based on a funeral march?
I haven't seen it but I think I saw Charles Cornell (jazz pianist & RUclipsr) talking about it in his flat 6 chord video so that makes sense!
Abe has said he loves using ghost notes. They became popular in jazz drumming and early R&B.
This is the most attractive vid I done ever seen
“ I will always approve of ending on the flat six, ALWAYS!” 😂 Greatest album ever. Thnx for the review IXI.
I think I power listened to this song for 48 hours straight after I first heard it.
Your explorations feel so much like the stripped down version they did, that `outer space` thing. Check it out if you aren’t familiar, it’s my favorite version

👍👏👏 amazing information
Love your reaction ..awesome
Band ..
What a great song
I saw other reactions of black folks saying the beat is very groovy almost like hip hop and one of them was like “ man I wanna freestyle to the beat”
Never noticed the drumming till you pointed it out.
another cool fact about the drums - this is a linear groove, meaning only one drum is hit at any given time. Most drum grooves aren't like that. Abe is awesome at these linear grooves!
@@iximusic The kick drum and the snare don't hit at the same time at all?
nope!
Damn good music taste. First NIN then this. Yes.
Amazing how David Lynch never heard of the Deftones. They'd be all over his movies.
I feel like watching more of these videos
I see what you did there...
Gorgeous
I love the fill into nothing before v2
I know we're on White Pony now, but am hoping for an analysis of the song Minerva one day.
Very late to the party... but does anyone else recognize The Batman main theme in the opening chords? Same! And if you extend them a bit... Imperial March...
Great video!!
We do not deserve your content, as well as we do not deserve Deftones. I am forever grateful for everything they gave me.
Your awesome shine on

I'm thinking they probably aren't putting the drums on a grid. It's able to breath and feels natural.
really interesting song
was a little bit sad that u didnt ur cover version with your beautiful voice at the end of the video
Please do one of these for Around the Fur 🥺
Could you break down the California album by Mr.Bungle? Lots of interesting stuff in there.
