Hello, professional chemist here. Looking at the data sheet for the paint stripper you had compared the nail polish remover to, the main ingredient appears to be dichloromethane. Dichloromethane is acutely toxic, and also likely carcinogenic. It has a very distinctive smell, so it is more than likely to be present in that product. DCM is highly volatile and evaporates quickly, leaving the area cold. These kinds of paint strippers rely on the solvent soaking in between the layers of paint, and then evaporating to create bubbles and cracks within the paint layer. It didn’t work on the swatch stick because it needed the body heat of a person to help the DCM evaporate and puff up the paint. Given your experiences with this product, I’m fairly confident in saying it contains DCM as the active ingredient, likely contained within a cellulose-based gel to keep it in place. Because DCM is wildly toxic, this product is absolutely unsafe and should never be used on any living creature you don’t want to accidentally die.
In my undergraduate organic chem class, we always wear latex gloves during labs. Whenever we use DCM as a solvent, if it gets on our gloves, we have to immediately take those gloves on, wash our hands for several minutes, and put on new gloves. DCM is no joke.

I work in the automotive industry, and I’m a painter. To put it simply I have been in the situation of getting paint stripper (thinner) on my nails after painting them and they react pretty much how the videos are showing the nail polish in the videos. It crumples up and flakes off, the same exact way automotive paint does. I believe this product more then likely has something more caustic in it then just standard acetone (which I also use since the auto industry is swapping from thinner to acetone) If you think it smells like airplane stripper (which i have smelled so many times I think my nose hairs are permanently dead from) then it more then likely does have some form of the chemical in it. I would highly advice you to be safe with it, I had to get specially trained to work with such chemicals these days. Please be safe Cristine I would hate to see you get a nasty chem burn or harm yourself in any way. I’ve seen guys nails come off over stuff like this.
How similar is model car paint to real car paint? Model car paint stripper did the same thing. (As a kid I used model car paint for nail polish because it came in metallics, used paint stripper to take it off)
Jigoku Shojo I would say not very as recently the industry is moving into Water Based paint and I believe model car paint is still mainly chemical based. I only say that because I myself have very little experience with the older solvent paints though. Water based paint does not crackle and flake like this in my experience, and you’ll never use thinner with it, only acetone. I haven’t even seen industrial acetone have this effect on paint. I really can’t think of this polish remover having anything else in it that could be anything as gentle as acetone to be honest.
Chemist here, not sure what is in the nail stuff but judging by the ingredient list of the aircraft paint remover, you really don't want this stuff on your skin. Let's go over the ingredients: Dichloromethane: carcinogenic, acute inhalation hazard, easily absorbed through the skin. DCM is a common solvent in chemistry labs, but it's pretty nasty. Acetone (what you use as common nail polish remover) is much preferred. Methanol: have you heard about the "moonshiners" who would go blind? yeah. Ammonium hydroxide: corrosive AF. If you let urine accumulate in an area with bad ventilation, this chemical is responsible for the burning sensation in your nose. Xylene: inhalation hazard and central nervous system depressant. This stuff is responsible for the smell of spray paint. Hydrotreated light distillate: petroleum, not too concerning. Fatty acid soap: again, not concerning. Ethylbenzene: possible carcinogen, another inhalation hazard TL;DR: if you get this on your skin, wash off ASAP with plenty of soap and water. EDIT: if you want it analyzed, I could probably arrange something for you. I work in a research lab with a lot of chemical analysis instruments. ;)
Uhh, methanol is only dangerous if you drink it, otherwise it’s a pretty common ingredient in various solvents, in antifreeze. Myeah, please stop making regular things sound scarier than they are. No one is going to drink nail polish remover. :/ (By this i don’t mean to defend the product, which i’m pretty sure is just chemical garbage)
At the point she screamed, was not fair. The polish she poured it on uncurled polish. The remover gel dose not jump off the nail she displayed and dose not turn gel, acrylic or dip into a wet goo as in her video. I have used this product for 2 years with great results, no bad effects, no allergies and no burning. We use gasoline, pain thinner, paint remover and many other products a lot in life and don’t think about it. Use as recommended label directions, and wash hands following the removal as you would with any thing even a tin foil wrapped acetone soak.
Hi Cristine. I was rewatching this with my husband, an analytical chemist. He noticed that the paint stripper you used to use had methylene chloride in it as a main ingredient. He said that would make the skin feel cold, like Ben was feeling and that it has a unique smell. That chemical has an inhalation risk and some risk of absorption through the skin. Have fun and love your videos.
I think it'd be cool if you got some of that industrial paint remover and tested it on nail polish too, to see how it compares. Just test it on the yogurt lid and the fake nails, not on Ben's fingers this time lol
Random fact: Nail Polish remover with Acetone and steel wool takes the writing off street signs. 🤷🏽♀️ Fun fact courtesy of my sign writing brother hahah.

As SOON as she opened the bottle and I saw the consistency I screamed “NO!” That is 100% paint stripper - I recognize it from when I refinished furniture. GOOD GOD.
Chances are that a few Chinese nail salons (being loosely regulated) started using the paint stripper to save time and would just put it in old gel polish bottles so customers wouldn't notice and be concerned... And then someone realized they could sell said bottles to other salons/customers worldwide.
After hearing the Podcast about how upset Ben was after doing this video, I always feel bad about watching it and laughing knowing that he was uncomfortable.

Watching this with a totally different perspective after Ben said in one of their podcasts that he was truly upset about Cristine using an industrial paint remover on his nails. It makes me a little upset too, I mean, she could have deduced it was dangerous.
Hey Cristine, as a chemist (in training) the ingredients in that aircraft paint stripper are pretty nasty and not something you’d want even close to your skin. Dichloromethane, which is the primary ingredient, is actually a carcinogen and can cause burns if you leave it on your skin for a bit. The second incredient methanol is also pretty nasty, it can cause blindness and death if ingested, which can happen if you get it on your hands and then eat without washing them. Ammonium hydroxide is very caustic and can cause bad burns. So the top 3 ingredients are all stuff you don’t want on your hands!!! So if that nail polish remover stuff really does have the same chemical makeup as you suspect, you really should avoid any further contact with it and don’t breathe it in!!
Seriously, take action. First of all stealing someone's stuff is shitty, second of all maybe it would take the ads down so uneducated people dont buy this nasty stuff

The three ingredients mentioned; cellulose would be the gelling agent, to hold the ethanol in the area for longer (it vaporises very quickly) and the deionised water is just purified water to dilute the ethanol. Ethanol is similar to acetone, in that it would swell the resin in the nail polish making it release from the nail surface. Ethanol is really not good for you, especially over long repeated exposure.
Cristine needs to make a peel-off base coat called "It's not a problem anymore" because it makes removing polish less of an issue. EDIT: The replies argued over the name for her to just end up calling it "Peel-Off Base Coat" smh

You seem very smart!
omg everybody pray for ben
Is this even legal ...
Chemist here, not sure what is in the nail stuff but judging by the ingredient list of the aircraft paint remover, you really don't want this stuff on your skin. Let's go over the ingredients:
Dichloromethane: carcinogenic, acute inhalation hazard, easily absorbed through the skin.
Ethylbenzene: possible carcinogen, another inhalation hazard
TL;DR: if you get this on your skin, wash off ASAP with plenty of soap and water.
EDIT: if you want it analyzed, I could probably arrange something for you. I work in a research lab with a lot of chemical analysis instruments. ;)
Nerd Lord MAKE THIS HAPPEN
Cristine needs to see this!!!!!!
Ooo this is so interesting! thank you for sharing :)
Uhh, methanol is only dangerous if you drink it, otherwise it’s a pretty common ingredient in various solvents, in antifreeze. Myeah, please stop making regular things sound scarier than they are. No one is going to drink nail polish remover. :/
(By this i don’t mean to defend the product, which i’m pretty sure is just chemical garbage)
It looked nasty right at the first clip. I'm glad my instincts were right.
I laughed so hard when Christine screamed... but I was also slightly disturbed by the result and the fact there are folks that think this is safe...
This was literally my exact reaction ngl
Cristine*
At the point she screamed, was not fair. The polish she poured it on uncurled polish. The remover gel dose not jump off the nail she displayed and dose not turn gel, acrylic or dip into a wet goo as in her video. I have used this product for 2 years with great results, no bad effects, no allergies and no burning. We use gasoline, pain thinner, paint remover and many other products a lot in life and don’t think about it. Use as recommended label directions, and wash hands following the removal as you would with any thing even a tin foil wrapped acetone soak.
Ikk

Hi Cristine. I was rewatching this with my husband, an analytical chemist. He noticed that the paint stripper you used to use had methylene chloride in it as a main ingredient. Have fun and love your videos.

We need to fucking boost this.

@@axelcosgirl on a swatch stick it would be fine but I was talking about a real nail because the car paint stripper has corrosive stuff in it
And the remover on the car paint
"Is this safe?"
"I don't know. It's from Amazon."😆😆
“Did you really think I was gonna test this out on my nails!?”
“.....BEN!”
😂
You should actually use it as paint stripper and see if it works 😬
Good idea!
Agreed
She should use the nail swatchers (with a very tiny amount of oil since that's probably why it worked on Ben) and compare how they perform.
Agree. Make a video comparing this to paint stripper for cars.
But this time not in Ben 😂😂
I think you are probably right about the nail removal being paint stripper
I just bought my first uv/led gel kit last week. After falling in love with doing my own gel nails, I went online shopping for more colors. An ad for this "magical" popping gel polish remover came up. I was intrigued but also super terrified... (I value Christine's opinion and have followed her since she started) To simply nailogical I went and thankfully so. I will just soak this off and keep my finger skin!! Super Nailogic Gal to the rescue!
You should have tried it with actual car paint stripper to compare the results
@@gingersnap1788 of course
That’s too dangerous
Gal withanipad it wouldn’t be on their nails they could just do it on like anything else
yesssss
Elena C,
still. would you like to risk your health as well as others by blindly testing car paint remover on 'basically anything else '?
Cristine you should do a game show where Ben pick some nail photos for you to see if you recognize the owner of the nail
Ariel Tam omg this is awesome!!!, or viewer submitted nails and she judges us all
YES Cristine needs to see this!!
That polish popped off just like your new nail brand.
It’s like the paint remover we use when removing paint from roofs. Sometimes it cracks and is easier to remove, sometimes it doesn’t crack and it’s just a slimy mess. It’s a surprise everytime😂
We just gonna ignore the fact that Cristine was able to tell apart a person from their nails? 💀
Leslie Carlos IKR
Leslie Carlos Hannah Roxy has some very uniquely perfect and unmistakable nails 😊
@@cathyllopes so true
On that fbi bs
@@cathyllopes that french tip mani looked almost photoshopped! so perfect 😛
It'd be pretty conclusive if you tried the nail remover on car rims.
next video...?
This needs way more likes! this needs to be the next video!!!
And the car paint strip on gel polish!
Thinking the same thing, really interesting that her childhood contributed to this video~
Extremely helpful actually
„People who are allergic shouldn‘t use“, but we‘re not gonna tell you what‘s inside so you have to buy it to figure out if you are allergic to anything inside.
Kinder surprise Eggs for Adults, but in toxic...
funny how kinder eggs are illegal (rip the states) but this is apparently not
it means like anyone with allergies
That’s why Kinder Eggs are banned in America smh
bffplv anne-so et marilou nope, they were banned because someone choked on the little yellow plastic thing.
bffplv anne-so et marilou lol noooo
Thank you RUclips algorithm for recommending this random channel/video to me cause it was gold 🤣🤣🤣
