So impressed with how good the ProBuckers sound.
Like the ProBuckers
Just watched. I’m really impressed with the quality of tone of those ProBuckers.
WOW!!! Blew me out of my chair going from voice to guitar. Watch your volume settings, folks. He's a soft talker, loud player.
Thank you for the comment. This is very helpful. Will keep that in mind for future videos!
hahah went straight to the comment section just to check if I was the only one who felt off a chair while having this video in the background on headphones.
i love your content, great information. I lost it when you played Melissa. Thank you for making my day.
Thank you so much for your comment! Very happy that you understand the playing hahaha.
Great comparison video. Very useful. Thank you.
Anyhoo, I'm your 53rd Subscriber. Nice, labor-intensive review. Much appreciated.
Great information I have always wanted yo know! Thanks..
This video makes me glad I got a ‘60s Standard instead of a Custom regarding the new Epiphones.
Nice comparison. Only one small criticism -- make sure your cleans are actually clean when comparing cleans.
This was a great comparison, thank you. You play well 🤙
Thank you for the kind words.
"lets try some high gain notes" ~ starts shredding
The black guitar sounds quite different
I can't get over the impression that Gibson pickups (and in other comparison videos) tend to sound slightly more tonally rich to my ear. Perhaps this matters most when playing clean.
i was thinking of change my epiphone's probuckers ending up the problem was my finger and amps.
I wonder if that black one is wired with the humbucker coils being wired in parallel instead of series.
Damn dude, I hope the rest of your videos aren't bad like this as far as the audio levels between you and the instrument.
Trying to decide bewteen an epiphone les paul standard plus top pro with pro buckers
Or an epiphone les paul classic worn with burst buckers.
First riff sounds like early 70s Page imo 👍 can't go wrong with that !
I have a epi LP custom koa and have a similar gripe with the pickups, is it possible the pickups are coming from a different assembly line than the other models? My problem is the reverse of yours where the bridge pup sounds "decent" but the neck pup sounds "off" as yours do. Thought maybe they were installed backwards at first, but now i cant be sure...
I ended up removing them and installing them in another Epi just to make sure (since it's just a clip on system). It still sounded the way it did - so it's probably just some QC issue with the pickup. I actually don't mind it so much (and when I bought it, I had tried it at the store and kinda liked it). Just that it's very different than advertised - i.e. it's nothing similar to a BB3 that it seeks to emulate. The orientation of the pickup won't really affect the sound particularly where it's just 2 conductor style wiring.
Isn't that another model with the "gold" pickup covers? I wonder if it is the result of gold-coloured plating (over brass?) vs the standard silver nickel covers
Sounds like the bridge pickup in the black custom is wired wrong. Maybe out of phase? 2 wire or 4 wire?
No it's not.
Mine sounds exactly the same, straight from the shop.
So annoying..... looking for pickups change.....but so many options.
Cheers bro👍
Btw 2 wire design.
In the 50s and 60s Gibson charged their own magnets and they charged them in groups rather 1 at a time . Which results in the magnets not getting a full charge and also results on a very uneven charge so the gauss readings can very alot through out the magnet . Also old Gibson magnets were rough cast and to have that down now you have to pay a premium as this no longer standard practice and Gibson won't pay that premium . An unfinished magnet which is what Gibson uses for the BBs are not the same as a sandcast magnet. Duncan only uses sand cast for their more expensive custom shop pups and use polished for their regular production pups . The only regular production Duncan's with sand cast Mags is the whole lotta humbucker but they started out as a custom shop set. Also most manufacturers are not using the same alnico formulas as in the 50s and 60s and to have them made with the old formulas you have go pay a premium which Gibson is not willing to pay
Underrated comment!
I wonder if the sound difference in your custom is due to the construction of the guitar. I know some of these are all mahogany as opposed to mahogany with a maple cap on a typical Les Paul.
@Dustin Feenker true, the black guitar must have diferent pups in them
@@the.communist The custom has an ebony neck, that is naturally brighter then rosewoord or indian laurel
could you please write the songs you played?
Is the epi lp custom bridge’s height lower than the rest? Make it match the rest of them and check if the pickup’s pole pieces are also the same height as the rest.
I used digital calipers to match all the pickup heights. The variance would've been at most a couple hundredths of an inch.
@@noodlingguitars4182 oh wow you really went at it. I wonder what would happen if you get another probucker (swap one of yours into it) and test it out. I have had bad pickups before and they sound quieter and duller.
Another thing you can check is the wiring, solder contacts, or the pots. If you swap the quick connectors do you get the same sound through what is usually the neck configuration?
Yeah, I lower my pick ups and that sound much better
You have to check the back of the pickup. Some just sat N for neck and B for bridge. I recently got an Epiphone Les Paul Standard Pro and the bridge pickup has a sticker that reads PB3NHCB-4 and that one sounds as good as any Gibson pickup I’ve played.
good review
Love your playing man, whats your signal chain?
Thank you for the kind words! I'm just going from guitar -> helix -> digital workstation -> PC for this video. I'll need to fix one of the patches because there's some odd clipping in some of the neck pickup samples.
@@noodlingguitars4182 thanks!! Looking forward to more vids. I’m surprised you don’t have more subs, your production makes you seem like a channel with at least 10k-30k subs 😁
I wonder if the gold coating on the custom's pickups is a factor?
That black guitar sounds like it is wired to the neck pickup when the switch is in the bridge position.
Or the coil cut or tap is engaged.
@@jeremyacker8566 I agree 100%! 👍
I acquired some new epiphones this year with plans to swap the pickups out for something better for metal. I actually like the pro buckers for metal which was super surprising. Never really been a fan of burst buckers tho.
There's not a lot of difference between pickups when ubdee high gain
The epiphone pro buckers are made the same exact same way as the Gibson burst buckers and with the same materials..
The probuckers on the custom are not even close to the probuckers on the earlier models.
I got the black custom model 2020 and the sound is really so muddy and different....
I am thinking of buying a Gibson les Paul studio but it's over my budget on the other hand the Epiphone custom is such a great guitar....I am thinking of changing the pickups...to some more Les Paul sounding ones... don't know which one.
Cheers 👍
the pickups in the blackie sound horrible...dark muddy, a bit out of phase/nasal...maybe a wiring problem (bad cable or soldering spot etc)...,maybe the tone pot has an issue
anyway, good test, but the recording is bad (harsh digital distortion)
Have you tried to messure the pickups with a multimeter on the custom? They sound lower output to me
Yes, on the multimeter they're about the same. But remember, that's only the resistance. So meaning that (safe assumption) given the same gauge wire, it has approx. the same amount of wire. But it tells you nothing about the amount of wire on one coil vs another, it tells you nothing about the magnets etc...
@@noodlingguitars4182 according to some boutique pickup builders (phill mcknight and dylantalkstone) the wire gauge makes little to no difference whatsoever so that leads me to my other theory which both pickups could be alnico 3 since alnico 3 produces lower gauss than alnico 2, it is very common to see mixed up things in the factory, i think they sound better
@@srfrodoxd Thanks for your comment. I think you may be misinterpreting their information. Actually, if you watch Dylan's channel (I recently started following it and have bought some pickups from him as well), wire gauge makes a HUGE difference - in fact, that's how he makes his centerpunch do the thing it does (i.e. each coil is wound with a different gauge, so that when split, the screw side has a higher output). What you may be referring to, is that different gauges of wire may be used and so the resistance reading does not actually tell you anything about the pickup - I think both Phil and Dylan may have talked about this in various contexts. For example, 42 gauge wire is thicker than 43. So on the same bobbin, you can wind more turns with 43, which in turn increases the actual resistance. By extension, it also means that if you use less 43 gauge wire to get the same resistance as compared to 42 gauge wire. The resistance reading will be the same, but your coil shape would be smaller and different, which changes the frequency response of the pickup (assuming all other factors constant). I'm pretty sure both Dylan and other pickup makers have explained this pretty accurately.
@@srfrodoxd Just for your reference, search for video #133 by Dylan.
Came here for the comparison, but can't help but notice your jacket haha. nice to see some hololive enjoyers in unexpected vids. What was the song you played at 5:36 ?
Thank you! I like supporting Vtubers very much :D The song is just the general chord progression to Union by Ooishi Masayoshi (though it's probably not in the same key - it was just that general idea). It is the OP song to the tv anime show "SSSS.Gridman"
I wouldn't say one pick up is better as it comes down to what sound your looking for Burstbuckers have an even which fans of the probuckers would say they lack distinction and sound to bland . Probuckers have that growl in the low notes and have a sharp crisp ear pricing highs , which Burstbucker fans would describe as having to much bottom end and to much high-end sounding distorted and lack clean mellow tones . Personally I like Growling lows and ear pricing highs in my les paul , if wanted warm mellow tones I would play a tele with a double humbucker split coil at the bridge and a single coil at the neck with each pickup having its own tone and volume knobs ( come to think of it I have a tele I built like that ) . Its all about your style and tastes when it comes to instrument preference.
I own probuckers and tried burstbuckers. If you know how to use the volume and tone controls the probuckers can replicate the burstbuckers well. But I prefer the probuckers in high gain and loud tone scenario. But my probuckers 3 in my bridge was crazy hot when I measured resistance. Can’t remember what it measured but I couldn’t believe it. I wanna say 13k
13k suggests it may be a different pickup or there was something else in between the pickup and the multimeter.
Probuckers equal in clarity slightly more distorted then the burst buckers at higher volumes under distortion but I found that through other videos I have already watched
You may want to take a resistance reading on the Probucker in that Black epi? To me it sounded like
it is weak so it may be defective or the wiring at the plug is wrong? Take the reading and see if it is between 7.8K -8.4K.
you can take the reading at the end of you guitar cable while it is plugged into the guitars output jack.
Just put one Multimeter test lead to the cable tip and the other to the longer part of the plug.
Thanks Marshall. That was all done before I did the video. Checked both the resistance and inductance and the readings were all within the correct ballpark. Wiring is correct as well. It's probably just the way the coil was wound. These things do happen - while I've swapped out the pickups, I did keep them in case one day I do want that weaker sound.
Hi there.
Got the same issue with same guitar.
So annoying that guitar is very well made but the sound is so muddy....
Any recommendations for the pickup change?
Cheers 🍻
@@user-yx9kg3ch2y What tone are you looking for? clean with a vintage output or more modern tone?
The Seymour Duncan Jazz set or 59 set is very clean and articulate?
@@These_go_to_eleven_1959I do like something in between 🙂, I was looking for Mojotone 59 clone, maybe change the wiring harness as well. I do like the sound of bare nuckle though...
What would you recommend for classic rock and decent clean sounds.
Thanks for comment 👍
@@user-yx9kg3ch2y The MOJO 59 clone would get my top vote! 👍 Those are outstanding Pu's! I like the low wind version but either is stellar.
Now I need to seek out a comparison between probuckers and alnico pros.
Definitely the first 3 sounded pretty similar and the custom sounded different...but I loved the sound of your custom. Of the first three, I thought your blue LP had the best sound of them all!
3 thoughts on the sound disparity: 1) have you tried lowering or raising the bridge pickup height? (Again, I think that would be a mistake to try to make it similar, because it's unique sound was great as it is; 2) maybe the gold/brass plating affects the transparency to the magnetic field compared to the standard chrome plated brass alloy cover on the Epiphone; 3) considering the Probuckers are made in China, perhaps the issue is one of quality control, much like the originsl P.A.F.s from the 50s. Maybe there's a starker difference in the wind count for the coils than there should be, creating an interesting tone.
Open it up and check the Capacitor values.
The custom has an ebony fretboard which actually can really change the tone of the guitar. It sounds like it has a bit more bite for sure.
Nonsense
The magic happened in the past by accident it also took over 50 plus years for this older pickups to age hence the sound your getting now in the past if a particular set got made and everything aligned by sheer fluke you then got that legendary set that we all rave about now all we don't have now is that original aged wire from back then or another 50 years to come back and see how the probuckers faired in 50 years or so will leave that to who is about then but if you want the correct original correct process I'm sure someone will fleece you for the trouble if you really want beautiful pickups go to Tyson tione labs or Ron Ellis or BRIERLEY GUITAR PICKUPS or sliders pickups in Australia you will find your magic there just my two cents worth.....
The epiphone pro buckers are made the same exact same way and with the same materials as the Gibson burst buckers
I am bit confused. Neither Epiphone nor Gibson give us specs on their sites about their pups. Chinese online stores write these are alnico 5 pups, and many times, they do not mention whether they are PB 1, 2, or 3. I also saw on a Chinese site that Bridge and Neck both were PB2 according to the photos about their backs. Stoned on this mess
Liked for comparison, sub for Kiryu-kai goods 😄
I also own an Epiphone Les Paul Custom from year 2020.
This guitar sounds quite bassy even if i changed the bridge pickup for a Seymour Duncam Distortion.
I just noticed your bridge pick ups are really high. I crank mine flat sound much better. They’re that high. They are just weird.
Idk why but I like epiphone sg's pickups way more than the epiphone les paul modern's, mind you I don't think pickups do much so idk whats going on
Did yours come with the Alnico Classic Pros? A lot of people like those over the Probuckers too! Whichever works for you is always best!
dumped some money on all those les pauls.
You a fan of Hololive's Kiryu Coco?
Yes! I was Kiryu-kai member‼ Actually, I have the tail in the backseat of my car always haha.
Believe it or not, the Epiphone Custom is one of the most counterfeited guitars on the market.
It would be a good idea to confirm yours is genuine as this would explain the sound difference.
100% genuine.
@@noodlingguitars4182 check pickup height? setting too low make make it sound muddy 🤔
That was all been done before the video. After the video, I even swapped it into another Epi (since they use the quick connects anyway) and it sounded exactly the same. It's just how that set of pickups sound.
@@noodlingguitars4182 It may be wired wrong at the quick connect plug. while the p'u is in a guitar
take a resistance reading using a guitar cable and multimeter. simply take the reading from the end pf the guitar cable that normally goes to the amp. take one test lead from the meter to the tip of the plug
and the other to the longer part. make sure to set the meter to 20K.
you should get a 7.8K-8.4K reading. somewhere in that range for the Probucker 3.
@@noodlingguitars4182 Hi mate, just checking have you figured out what is going on with those muddy pickups on a black custom model.
Got the same issue, guitar is perfect it's just when I swap it for studio that I got with 490 pick up I realize how muddy and "under the blanket" my custom sounds.
Cheers bro 👍
wtf is this clippng harsh top end coming from??!?! do you recording in +20 db or what?))
Am I crazy, or do the probuckers sound better than the burstbuckers in this video?
The audio is clipping, makes it hard to compare
Thank you for watching and spending the time to comment - it's very much appreciated. I realized that there was a lot of clipping after uploading and am working on fixing the levels for future videos.
Compared the epi slash anaconda (probuckers)to the 59 epi standard outfit (gibson burstbuckers) this week in a shop. The slash sounds really good, but in direct comparsion, for me, the 59 epi standard had more output, tone range, smoother sound and much better sustain.
Dont want to talk the slash bad, its a really nice guitar, but for me the 59 was the clear winner.
sound is quite harsh
The same pickups will sound very different in a les paul custom compared to a les Paul standard. A custom has an ebony board and usually have no Maple cap . A traditional custom will have a slab Mahagony body and not only does it not have a maple cap it Has no cap at all . It's a slab of mahagony that is routed for the wiring and pickup cavities and is given a top Carve rather then doing a top carve on a thinner piece of mahagony or maple and then gluing it on the mahagony body . The lack of a maple cap the body being 1 piece of mahagony with no cap at all and the ebony fret board changes the sound of a les paul alot . That type of les custom sounds like a cross between an explorer and a les paul .. it's like a brighter less low mid heavy explorer.
Nothing to do with wood
Burstbucker 2 et 3 son vraiment mieux c est se que j ai sur ma Les Paul LPJ 2013 j ai changé tout l électronique aussi
Probuckers sound boxy and lower output to me compared to the burstbucker.
I think you have a mislabeled Probucker 2 in the bridge position. That's my gut instinct. Regardless, Burstbuckers are in no way superior to Probuckers. Different? Sure, but barely detectably in real-word circumstances.
This actually sounds quite plausible and realistic! Thank you for the subscribe. I'm trying to rebalance my time a bit since we're not teleworking anymore... so need to find time to make videos at night before I fall asleep.
@@noodlingguitars4182 Best of luck. The world got a good shaking and we’re left to figure things out as we go. And you’re welcome. 👍
Tune the guitar jeeZ
If tou eant an qxtual comparison, nees ro be the same guitar hardware and strings. Othwrwose ots a moot point becaise not everythign is equal. Ever fonto a store and play 3, 4, 5 doffernt versions or the same guitar? I have. Youll find each sounds, feela and plays different, sone bettwr and some worse. This is why pwoolw will search, in some cases for years, to find just the right guitar.
When you’re comparing two or more things with similar names, you MUST use the correct names for each, or else you confuse everyone. I saw that one time you attempted to fix this with using a font graphic, which is still not acceptable, and then other times you did not fix it at all. So I have no idea what you’re talking about.
I realize video editing takes time, but that’s what you have to do if you’re going to make an “educational” video. You can’t have important mistakes in it. In other words, before publishing the video, find errors and record over them with corrections. This isn’t a suggestion, it’s advice for a necessary change. I hope you follow it and that your channel grows into what you want it to be.
really wanted to watch this, but the levels are killing this video. It feels like you are trying to be quiet ..until you play guitar.
I want to watch/enjoy your video, but when you're talking you basically CANNOT BE HEARD. I have to CRANK the volume when you speak, but turn it WAY DOWN when you play. Only made it a few minutes through, sorry
Thank you very much for the feedback. May I ask what you're using to listen? I will try to fix this for my next video.
