  • I'm comparing the high output PAF replica (BB3) to the medium output PAF replica (BB2) using a 2013 Gibson SG Standard Custom Shop and a 1971 Marshall Super Bass full stack. The Burstbucker 2 measures 8.15kOhm, and the Burstbucker 3 measures 8.55kOhm.

Thank you for the excellent demo. I have spent all morning trying to decide between the Burstbucker 2 & 3. Side note: Gibson's website says that all the Burstbuckers are unpotted. This is 2024 so maybe things have changed since in the past two years. Again, thank you.

very nice demo, Johan, great riffs and of course I love the 71 Super Bass, I have a 2008 R8 plain top and it has a BB2 in the neck and a BB 3 in the bridge. I've had a lot of people try to convince me to change them, but I love them! They sound a little brighter in the SG than my R8, since the SG is a brighter sounding guitar anyway. Stay safe, thanks for sharing

Hello Johan, these are the descriptions in the Gibson website about Burstbuckers 1,2 and 3, seems they are in the same range but only slightly different winding and output:
The BurstBucker™ line of pickups represents Gibson's drive to recapture the magic of the original "Patent Applied For" humbuckers. First introduced in the early 1990s, the Gibson BurstBucker™ - Types 1, 2, and 3 - successfully captured the subtle variations of true, classic humbucker tone with historically "unmatched" bobbin windings and Alnico II magnets. They produce an airy, full tone, and when overdriven they achieve a magical distortion with the slightly enhanced highs that made the originals famous.
BurstBucker™ Type 1 features a lower output, excellent for the neck position. BurstBucker™ Type 2 features medium output, and is perfect for both positions. BurstBucker™ Type 3 is overwound and hot, which is typically ideal for the bridge position. None of the BurstBuckers™ are wax potted, and all feature vintage braided two-conductor wiring."

Hi Vincenzo! I did not know they came out in the early 90s! My understanding was at first they only came on Custom Shop models, then they got put into some Standards in the 2000s. By 2014 the lowly LPJ model came stock with “Burstbucker Zebra 61” pickups, and Burstbuckers of some sort were in various Gibson models. They all seem to have different winding imbalances and magnet types.

Great comparison - thank you! I’m struggling with an R9 bridge decision and this side by side helped.
I just came across a set of 1985 Shaw’s and put them into my R9. One read 7.64k, the other 7.68k, neither had been ever opened. After fiddling with height adjustment, decided the bridge didnt have enough ‘oomph’, but the neck is glorious and will never come out. had a BB3 on the sidelines and had only tried it years ago. Swapped out the A2 magnet for an A4 (as I usually dont like a2 squishy bridges) and installed into the R9. Result is really pretty good, if not a tad bright in the bridge (running tone pot around 4.5 with a k40y9 .022). have a BB1&2 and a set of BBPro’s on the sideline that I can play with. Am thinking the A2 might reduce the top sizzle I don’t love. Option #2 is to install the BB2 in the bridge with the same A4 magnet and see where I am. My Bb2 is 8.02k@70*.

You are correct in your introduction about which are wax potted and which are not. I have a 2009 SG Standard that shipped a factory Burstbucker 1 and 3 set. I asked Gibson this very question and their reply was that factory-installed Burstbuckers are wax potted while the retail "Gibson Gear" (now called the Gibson Pickup Shop) pickups are not wax potted. I'm not sure if this also applies to Burstbuckers installed from the Gibson Custom Shop as my SG is Gibson USA. Thanks for all you do, Johan.

The main difference is that the Burstbuckers have uneven coil windings and are, by design, less consistent. BB1's can be 7.7-8k, BB2's can be 8-8.4k and BB3's can be 8.6-9k. The 57's were kind of like ideal Seth Lover prototypes without the inaccuracies of factory production. The BB's simulate what a real PAF was like and a 57 is what it was supposed to be: Even-wound coils and consistent output.

Thank you for this! I love the curious reactive quality that BB2's seem to have as you begin to increase gain...the mids & highs start to get all excited & sizzly in a unique way. I have one in the bridge position of an Ibanez AF-55...sort of a (very) poor man's Yessongs-era Steve Howe/70's Ted Nugent type thing. Anyway, it excels at those type of tones in that cheap guitar!

Max..The difficulties are that every original PAF was different. There was little quality control as A2,3,4,5 magnets were my all used at various times and Pickups were wound anywhere from 7.2k (bright) to 9k ohms (dark sounding) so their is no "definitive PAF".. T Tops are are different story. Much closer tolerances 7.5k /7.6k Short A5 Magnet ,so their is no room for 'a winders interpretation' on those... They are what they are .

I have seth lovers and have compared them to the burstbickers 1 and 2 and the Seth's are a more pure vintage sounding pickup. A truer PAF tone . The burstbuckers are great but they have an more aggressive modern tone to them. The Seth's have a nice bite too but they are smother them the BB2 . They Seth's are tighter in the low end and have a more woody open sounding lower midrange and the top end is slightly more rounded. They have a very similar honk to them. The burstbuckers are like a grittier more biting slightly less clear seth . I had thr bursbkckers 1 and 2 and the Seth's in the same guitar and with the BBs the guitar was dull and lose and a bit muddy in the low end but very clear and biting in the top end . The Seth's made the guitar sound perfect . It rounded off the top end but the upper mids stayed the same and there was no loss of clarity and they made the bass tighter and the low mids more defined. I have the BB3 in the bridge of a couple if less Paul's and compared to the BB2 the 3 is tigher in the bass and more deifined in the low mids

Potting will reduce chances of microphonic feedback (or potential) and also take off some of the high and low edges. Obviously that's a better choice for loud, high gain amps. If you happen to get the chance to A/B with a real deal burst, they are unpotted, with some variation typically on the lower end of output, all of which gives a noticeable increase in clarity. They will still push a good amp, but that lower output will emphasize articulation. A cool experiment is take the unpotted modern pickup like the BB2 and lower the pickup a bit. Gets you in the range of most Bursts I've heard in the flesh. Gibson is starting to put the unpotted, lower output pickups in some of the really high end Brazilian board Murphys and it is pretty damn close to burst sound. Of course, WHICH of the old sounds do you want? Page's No 1 is on the lower end of the spectrum (listen closely to Ramble On in It Might Get Loud), while The Beast is a frickin monster. Bottom line, they all sound damn good through a cranked Marshall. Rock on, Johan!

Much more different when you play them in person . I have had many BB1 2 and 3 sets and in person the 3 is much brighter and not near as cold sounding as the 2. It's strange but the 3 despite being hotter is brighter then the 2 but also has more alot more lower mids and bigger bass but also alot more upper mids and a much bigger more open top end . It kind of breaks the rules of an over wound pickups. Usually the bass and treble decreased as the mids increase and the pickup gets darker but that is not the case with the BB3 and in fact I have a couple of BB3 that are barely hotter then the BB2 and those 2 BB3 are alot darker sounding then another 2 BB3s I have with around 9K. The 9K ones are way brighter then the 2 8.3k BB3 I have and I believe the lower output ones are actually mislabeled BB2s. I belive the BB3 are brighter and have a more open bigger top end because the BB3 has a much wider coil offset then the BB2 which prevents a loss of treble and even increases it despite the pickup being would hotter. Even wound buckers or owns with a very small offset will lose treble and darker quicker as more windings are added .

The after market burstbuckers are almost always unpotted unless gibson does an exclusive after market version like they did for sweet water and musicians friend . They were offering 4 conductor wax potted versions but in normal cases they are unpotted after market . When burstbuckers are stock pickups in a gibson usa guitar they are potted . In custom shop guitars the early burstbckers were unpotted but then they switched to potted for several years and now they are back using unpotted pickups for custom shop guitars but are still using potted in USA gibsons . If you buy a usa standard 50s or 60s you get potted buckers . After market they have always been unpotted. The custom shop switched back to unpotted pups in 2019 . If you have a custom shop gibson depending on the year you may have potted ones or unpotted ones

The burstbucker 3 resounds very well to magnet swapping. In the berine Marsden gibson beast replica les Paul they used a bursbkcket 2 and 3 with Alnico 5 magnets instead of alnico 2 and those things sounded huge. They still sounded like burstbuckers 2 and 3 but were just a bit crisper and tighter. They were like a slighty hotter but smoother and less harsh burstbucker pro . Burstbucker 2 and 3 sound great with Alinco 4 magnets as well they are like a middle ground between custombuckers and burstbuckers . They are like a hotter fatter custombucker but also smoother and they are a bit tighter then the standard burstbucker with a little more bite and not quite as chewy . Alnico 3 bursbuckers are more Jimmy page sounding

My Les Paul has a 2 and 3 in it. Thing is a flame thrower. Still might switch out the bridge for a super distortion so I can get those true Ace Frehley tones from it.

I have the BB3 in the bridge position in one of my Tokai LPs a matching (ohm) oil city pickup in the neck position. It's very reminiscent of the 70s Dimarzio super distortion all the players in those days used to change for their nasty Gibson pickups and re-fit replacement for the mini humbuckers. Gibson does make a decent pickup it's the three BB's forget the rest.

When people swapped out their Gibson pickups in the 70s it was not becuase they thought they were nasty it was beucase 70s gibson pickups were not hot enough to drive the amp for players seeking heavier tones . Which is why people turned to dinarzio and duncan . Gibson t top pickups of the 70s were low in output compared to many pafs . Gibson t tops were nowhere near as powerful as a BB3 . Most tops were between 7.3 k and 7.k where most pafs were 8k to 8.5k . The t tpps were fine if you only wanted led zeppelin or ACDC level overdrive but even jimmy page was having Duncan wind him hotter pickups by the end of the 70s . But if you wanted higher levels of overdrive the gibsom pickups did have enough push as music got heavier the gibson pups could not push the amp enough and guys were nodding their marhsalls for more distortion beucase the channel switching amps and good pedals were not a thing. Now that we have multi channel amps with huge amounts of overdrive on tap and high quality pedals 70s Gibson pickips are being seen in a difftent light and have become popular and are increasing in price. Even the tarback super humbucker set only had a 5k neck and 7.5k bridge. People never thought that 70s Gibson pickups sounded nasty its was just that they did not provide enough push for the the guys wanting more then classic rock levels even Gary moore swapped out his 70s Gibsons for for dimarzios and Jimmy page had at least 2 mini humbucker les pauls that were nodded for full size humbuckers . The mini hums were nice pickups but they were only between 6k and 6 5 k and that was not going to cut it for heavier rockers . These mods were not about poor quality of gibson pickups it was about the proper pickup for the job and sometimes tha required a hotter pickups . Look how many pros went to dinarzio or Duncan for their pickup needs . Not every pickups is right for every person n burstbuckers are great pickups but they are not right for every task . For example when I want to play Mr Big by Free my seth lover loaded les paul is the better choice then my burstbckers custombuckers or whole lotta humbuckers when I want to play some rush the custombuckers seem to do the job best if I want to play classic metal or something with tight low end the whole lotta numbers are the best choice and for something more brown and mid heavy I go bursbuckers 2 and 3

It is my understanding that all Burstbuckers used a vintage single lead!
Is it possible your 4-Lead Burstbucker is a "Pro" version?
I'm not 100% sure but I believe the Burstbucker Pro use AlNiCo 5 Magnets.
I have a set of #1 and #2 in my 1986 LP Custom, I added an isolated ground lead to the neck pickup so I could wire them always out of phase when both are selected.
The always out of phase works well for myself as I'm able to control the amount of phase shift by varying and balancing the volume controls.
    Great content, Thank You.

It features a traditional weight relieved mahogany body and neck, a plain maple top, rosewood fretboard, 60s neck profile, and coil tapping '57 Classic/Burstbucker 3 pickups. This model can be identified by a stamped 'CG' in the control cavity.

The difference between the 2 is quite substantial when played in person. The BB3 has a bigger low end and alot note pronounced lower mid . The BB3 is a bigger fatter sounding pickup with more mids . Keep in mind that not all BB3 are equal
There is a very wide output range. The ones johan compared are very close in output but that is not always the case. The BB3 can range from 8.3k to 9k. I have 4 BB3 . One is 8.3k another is 8 .36k and the other 2 are much hotter with one being 8.8k and the other 9.1. . The lower ones sound almost the same as a BB2 but the hottet ones are extremely different sounding. The hotte ones are very bright and brown . They are very van Halen 2 sounding . With a huge low end sometimes they sound close to BB2 and sometimes completely different.

I would think the magnet variables are the difference. When I make/Demo my Jimmy Page Replica Pickups on my channel, I can get the SAME result within a few hundred Ohms by altering the magnet..In fact I can change the reading on a pickup temporarily by 1,000 0hms (8.6k to 7.6k) by simply putting it in the refrigerator..A pickup measuring 8.6k in Australia in summer could well measure 7.6k in Russia.
Manufacturers don't say at what temp it was read at, so DCR specs are a little misleading.

@@DMSProduktions and bursbucker 3 in this video is 8.55 k which is more than marginally hot in vintage standards you said yourself they were 7k to 9k so 8.55 would not be marginal in that output context and many burstbickers 3 are hotter than 8 55k they range from 8.3 k to over 9k . I have one that is 9 and 8.8k and I have 2 that are 8.3k while pafs did range from 7k to 9k the vast majority were 8k to low 8k pafs hotter than 8.6k were quite rate they exist but the majority are below 8.6 so in terms of the late 50s and early 60s a BB3 would be the hottest you woild get. The older BB3 seen to be much more aggressive then the newer ones. A BB3 wound to spec is supposed to be 8..3 but in the past most were 8.6k to 8.7 but some were over 9k older 57 classic plus were alot hotter as well most now are 8.5k but older ones were white often in the high 8k and many cases over 9k. It seems Gibson are winding their pckups more to spec . My older Gibson pickups are way hotter then my newer ones or the same model. The newer BB3 seem neutered where the older ones were far more aggressive then nau other paf clone modern gbosn magnets are also more powerful then the paf era ones .

BB2 for me. The lower output and no wax potting seems to give a much airier, defined sound with great dynamics. With a risk of feedback on high gain that is... A2 pros second. Are they potted? If so, they'd seem like a great compromise. Cheers Johan!
