I do not care what you throw on that Epiphone, the fact is and always will be that it’s a cheap Chinese mass produced slave labor guitar and nothing you throw on it will change this! So if you go this route I sure hope you love it because you’re certainly never going to get anything close $1500 for it after you’ve bought it! I'm curious how much brighter the sound was attributed to the pots vs the pickups. What pots did you take out and what did you put in. I know the pickups will sound different, but the pots make a pretty big difference too. Generally speaking, 500k pots will sound brighter than 250k.

    I have this _exact_ guitar. It kinda sounds muddy and wooly to me, even after adjusting the pickups to ensure they're at the right height. So when researching what new pickups could do imagine my delight at stumbling across your video. I wish the video had AB tests of the clean output. Also I'm curious how much impact you think changing the pots had on it, and why you didn't consider the bridge.

      Hi there! It honestly wasn't something I planned and I guess it could have been better. Changing the pots was something I told the guy cause, if you are going through all the trouble, you might as well go all in and change all the electronics so they are all up to par. It probably makes a difference in sound but not a HUGE one. I can tell you they do feel better! Changing the bridge and nut was discussed but we both felt it was too much of an investment for what he was trying to do.

      Nice! Your Epiphone will sound better for sure! The point of this video is basically “don’t expect these pickups to make your Epiphone be as good as a Gibson” but if you manage your expectations, it’s worth upgrading. I would still prefer a 799 Gibson Les Paul over an Epiphone standard. That’s what I mean by “save your money and get a Gibson instead”. A 3.5k les Paul (talking custom here) is definitely on a different league! The orange is also going to make you very happy! Thanks for watching and commenting. Let me know how it turns out! @@preciseaudioblog I would upgrade a 799 Gibson for sure. I have before and they always turn out better. The main difference between the Epiphones and Gibsons are the wood qualities and materials used, binding, electronics, finish.... but mainly the Wood. Although on day one an Epi might sound and/or play better than a Gibson the Gibson will get better over time and age way better than the Epiphany whilst an Episode will stay the same or get worse over the years. This is not ALWAYS the case but it is for the most part. A vast majority of the time. I'll make a video about the differences between Epiphones and Gibsons, Mex and American Fenders and Taylors and what I have learnt first hand at their factories. Hope to help!

    There's more clarity and definition in SD ApH-III Slash model ...This SD have a low output and need a little boosting to play at the best. I've got a bridge and neck model on my Vintage V100 (a Les Paul model) and they sounding amazing! 🎸

      I agree. These are very low output. They do sound good though.

    • @adamwatson6916
      @adamwatson6916 2 года назад

      The output is not that low . They are actually considered to be vintage hot or vintage over wound. The neck is 8k and the Bridge falls between 8.5k and 8.8k which is considered a hotter vintage output. Most vintage Gibson pickups like PAFs were usually between 7 5 k and 8k. Gibson patent numbers were usually 7.8k to 8k and 70s gibson patent number pups were usually 7.3 k to 7.6k.
      Most PAf replica sets have a 7.5k neck and 8k to 8.2k bridge. The Duncan seth lovers have an 7.5k neck and 8 3 bridge Gibson custombuckers which is their most accurate PAf copy is usually 8k in both postions . So while the slash set are certainly not high output by any stretch I would hesitate to put them in the low output category. I have had 2 sets of these pickups and the had a little extra boost and pushed the amp a little harder then my seth lovers and custombuckers . They were also identical in output as my Burstbucker 2 and 3 sets which have more kick then my other pickups.

    I thought about changing pick ups, changing amp, guitar, strings and even picks.
    But what actually changed my sound for good in a dramatic way was swapping my amps pick ups. Now that’s a serious change tone change.
    And it’s way cheaper than buying a more expensive amp or a Gibson guitar. It really blew my mind how radical the sound changed. I swapped my origin cabinet amps for greenbacks and it feels like I had bought a new amp and a new guitar.
    I’d say that choosing your speakers is even more important than choosing your guitar or amp.

I don't know what pickups come in the Eko LP but the Slash are NOT high gain at all... if you want to go that route (while i don't think it'll made a huge difference) maybe try the DiMarzio Super distortions www.zzounds.com/a--3981266/item--DIMSUPRDST or the Seymour Duncan JB www.zzounds.com/a--3981266/item--SEMSH4 ... or try the Seymour Duncan Invaders www.zzounds.com/a--3981266/item--SEMSH8B if your dare lol. @@begoz5223 JB is a killer pickup! The Send/Return is a different way of hooking up your pedal, you'll find those connections in the back of your amp (I checked). What you want to do is connect your guitar straight into the input of the amp and then take a cable from the send jack of the back of your amp into the input on your pedal and then another cable from the output of your pedal into the return of the amp. That will have a completely different effect on your sound when engaging the pedal. It might get a little "hummy" some loops do unfortunately. But nothing that a Noise Gate pedal won't fix. Moding an epiphone with better pickups and electronics is not a waste of money. I fact a moded epi is a better guitar then any of the lower end gibsons . Even the lower end gibsons have crap electronics. They have PCB boards instead of hand wired harnesses . They have crappy low grade pots and caps and low end gibson pickups are not much better than epiphone pickups. The 490s the 498t which gibosn puts in most of their low end guitars are awful. With an epiphone if you swap out all the electronics you will still spend less then you would on a low end gibson and it will sound better. The newer high end epiphones with gibosm electronics like the 59 les paul the 61 les paul/SG and the Bonamassa Lazarus have all more than held their own agianst their Gibson custom shop counterparts and if the epiphones all had custombuckers like the gibsons have or if the gibsons all had Bursrbuckers like the epis I bet the sound quality would have been even closer .

    • @PatPosse
      @PatPosse  2 года назад +3

      I disagree 100%. Here's the facts, An Epiphone might sound close or even better at first but the woods won't age the same as the cheaper (real) Gibsons. Faded's, tributes, jr's etc don't count.
      Also, I own 2 Custom Shop Les Pauls (both KILLER guitars) and they both have the 490-498 combo, they sound amazing. Again, it's all about the wood and guitar they are amplifying... I realize most people can't or won't buy a Gibson and that's fine, but saying an Epi is equal or better is just ignorant.

      Definitely a matter of preference. I do believe the Epi pickups sounded better on this particular mix, I did EQ for then and then used the same exact EQ for the other pickups to compare them fairly. Maybe I should have set everything at 12 o clock (or zero). The fact is, the slash sound brighter and have more top end, more attack, but less gain… you can definitely tame the treble if needed but I don’t think upgrading them it’s worth the money… I stand by what I said on the video (and over time the guitar’s owner ended up agreeing with me). The only downside is the pickups are still kinda crappy. Yes it’s not a Gipson and only a zealot would claim it to be “better” but for a beginner or even for someone who’s willing to change out the pickups to a good American set like what you did here can get you a lot closer to a real Les Paul than what you could just a few years ago. @@PatPosse When Slash got his first Gibson Les Paul, the Appetite For Destruction one; it actually was a Gibson Les Paul replica copy.
      Of course, after Guns N Roses & Slash got super popular, Gibson welcomed him as a Gibson player & endorser. But the very original guitar that exploded in popularity with Slash & GNR during the band’s AFD run was not really an actual Gibson Les Paul after all.
