Soloing over Grateful Dead

  • Sounds easier than it is, considering it's
just two chords to solo over
That's why Jerry is an absolute legend!
I may have stolen a lick from Dead and Company (2023
Philadelphia show first lick of the first solo)
Playing Dead songs is awesome but an absolute challenge, I still need a lot of practice
Other influences who are totally awesome when it comes to playing Dead are ‪@GabrielBergman95‬ and ‪@Guitargate‬ Being able to learn from them is a privilege

Jerry's style is ecclectic to say the least. He had a lot of influences ranging from folk and bluegrass to jazz. He was very expressive in the style/notes he played and often reflected the vibe from the crowd. If the audience was into it so was he. Mayer comes from a different place and has more theoretical approach. Jerry is hard to mimic because he was literally a guitar wizard; as in the trip he was on poured into his instrument... The dead searched for the sound and when they hit it they transcended all notions of what music is suppose to be. Its hard not to mention all the acid. That most definitely helped shape the whole dynamic lol.

Hey Now! Jerry’s guitar playing is transcendent! I take some influence from him, mainly regarding his use of the chromatic scale, but it still isn’t enough, because it’s so difficult to do what he does. Yes the acid sure helps I assume lol
I take a lot of stuff, not just from John, but from John’s own interpretation of Jerry. John has a great melodic and emotional sensitivity and I a lot of what I play is influenced by him so that’s the easiest way to get to Jerry, since I know John’s playing really well
Another great Dead player is Billy Strings, if you don’t know him you should go and have a listen, he is a bluegrass player (no need to say anything else lol)
If you want you can answer this comment with a list of songs from the Dead that you like and I’ll pick one and jam! Make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss it!

@@vasco_music check out august 23/24 1968. Live at the Shrine Auditorium. Or anything from 67-70 really... those are the formative years that shaped what was to come. Musically, 72-77 are much more tight and marketable but those early gigs really help put everything into context. Happy jamming!

@@violablues67 nice! I have heard that that inicial era of the Dead is the hardest one to get into, and as you said the years from 72 to 77 are easier to enjoy. The years I listen to the most are 77, 72 and then the late 80s.
Thank you for your advice, can’t wait to do my homework! My next Dead post will probably be Deal, jamming over those chords is just unique and is where I mix Jerry and John the best and also give it my own touch

Your words mean a lot, thank you so much! He is one of my biggest influences, so you can see a lot from him in my playing, but I think I only copied one lick note for note (the first lick from the first solo of the 2023 Philadelphia show). I answered another comment with a list of influences, feel free to check it out!
Thank you once more! Have a great day!

Very cool man! I feel like this is more John Mayer style than Jerry. Did you ever see Dead & Co. live?

    • @vasco_music
      @vasco_music  6 месяцев назад +1

I wish! Yes it is more John, but I’m very aware of that and I want to be able to play more like Jerry, but as John himself says, playing like Jerry is very hard!
Thank you for watching, I appreciate it!
If you want you can answer this comment with a small list of Dead songs and maybe I’ll choose one to play (I’ll probably only upload it next weekend)

@@vasco_music I've gotta say Althea or Brown Eyed Women as they're perfect to solo over

Those are GREAT! My next post will probably be Deal, but from those I’ll go with Brow Eyed Women (I still need to hit the Garcia gym a lot to be able to play Althea properly lol)
Those two songs are some of my favorite actually
Great taste! I’ll do my best!
