  • The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) comprises ten member states, with Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia ranking among the world's 50 largest economies. Indonesia, the largest economy in ASEAN by nominal GDP, is driven by strong private consumption and FDI, despite challenges like infrastructure deficits. Singapore, with a GDP per capita among the highest globally, excels as a global financial hub, supported by advanced infrastructure, a strong legal framework, and openness to trade. Vietnam has emerged as a manufacturing powerhouse, focusing on export-oriented growth and significant FDI. The Philippines, with a dynamic services sector and substantial remittances, sees robust growth supported by a youthful population. Malaysia's diversified economy, driven by manufacturing and exports, faces challenges like income inequality. Thailand's economy, bolstered by tourism and manufacturing, confronts issues like political instability and an aging population. While Brunei relies heavily on oil and gas, it is diversifying its economy. Myanmar, despite political instability, has opportunities in agriculture and mining. Cambodia's rapid growth is driven by garment manufacturing and tourism, while Laos relies on hydropower exports. Singapore stands out as the strongest economy in ASEAN due to its high GDP per capita, strategic location, advanced economic structure, business-friendly environment, and robust financial sector, although it faces challenges like an aging population and reliance on global trade. Despite these strengths, each ASEAN country uniquely contributes to the region's economic dynamism, collectively making ASEAN a significant global economic player. singaporean economy actualy now get shaken very hard by indonesian economic growth. take note that indonesia is singapore's number one refined oil importer that profitted tens of billios of usd every year. now indonesia is constructing more oil refinery in it's own teritory, thus reducing oil purchase from singapore. not only that, singapore also buying alot of crude oil from indonesia. with the existence of new oil refineries in indonesia, singapore's ability to get cheap crude oil from indonesia will be reduced, and soon will be over.
not only that, singapore also importing alot of raw ores from indonesia for their smelter industry. with downstream policy, singapore's ability to purchase raw ores also limited as more and more raw ore category that being banned from export is added by indonesian government, who also boosting the construction of ore smelters in indonesia
in term of port, indonesian government also already choosing the islands south of singapore as the location to build international shipping port equiped with the latest port technology. this project aimed by indonesian government to break singaporean hegemony in controlling indonesian ability to export stuff by using it's port, and also to reduce singaporean conntroll of shipping port in malaca strait
another thing to note. singaporean development and economy relies heavily in indonesian poverty, lack of development and indonesian dependency over singapore. with the recent development by indonesian government, it spells trouble and disaster for singaporean economy. this also the main reason why singaporean government giving so many support to EU to tackle down indonesian economic growth, which also backfired to singapore as indonesia have strong anti western hegemony sentiment among it's people. the effort to tackle down indonesian economy only making indonesia stronger in pushing forward their policy and development.

philippines may have high GDP growth rate, but massively poor GDP PER CAPITA. means ordinary citizens get poorer while the rich gets richer. this imbalance in GDP vs GDP PER CAPITA not just will slow down philippine gdp but may also cause recession. The government should do what it takes to improve GDP PER CAPITA, nationalize minimum wage, remove provincial and city wage rate, reduce corruption and decentralize the capital. too much wealth are focus in manila while neglecting other area of philippines

Your point about income inequality is not wrong but that is not what GDP PER CAPITA means. GDP PER CAPITA is simply the ratio between GDP and population. This is why countries like Malaysia and Thailand with comparable GDPs can still boast higher GDP PER CAPITA. PH has a bigger population than the 2 of them combined.

@@hunk2176 And your comment serves what purpose? You think Brunei's wealth would last through the centuries after its oil and gas wells had dried up?
Perhaps, that would be enough for the Sultan and his immediate family to live on for generations amd generations.
But I highly doubt if tt would be able to support all Bruneians for more than one generation.

But not their citizens. I saw pictures here in the YT and they look poor and miserable. That Sultan & his family are to greedy. To think that oil is Mother Nature & humans are just consumers. The Sultan and all his family members never contributed or work to produce that oil! DAH!!!!! They are just taking advantage of the resources that Mother Nature has provided. It should be for all humans and not just for few people!!!

In 2023 the GDP of :
      ASEAN - $3.863T
      India - $3.572T
Obviously the gdp of ASEAN is bigger bigger than India's.
India wins in Population size though, more than double that of ASEAN 's.
