The Philippines are surrounded by ocean and yet they're ordered to go into neutral zone to create tension. Why? Coz the Philippines is vassal state just like Japan and South Korea.
"Any country that host a military base with US forces is a vassal state. No matter how independent their government is. Foreign forces in your territory are a declaration of submission and dependency.
There are roughly 54,000 US servicemen stationed at 120 bases across Japan, 32 of which are in Okinawa alone.
On 19 March 2016, the Philippines and the United States government agreed on 5 locations of military bases for the American troops under the EDCA: Antonio Bautista Air Base (Palawan) Basa Air Base (Pampanga)
There are 15 US military bases in South Korea.
Kunsan Air Base, Osan Air Base, Camp Carroll located in Waegwan, Camp Castle located in Dongducheon +"

This article has helped me understand South China sea better.
      By Peter Y
"Why has Xi Jinping aggressively pursued Chinese terroritorial claims in the South China Sea?"
South China Sea reporting in the West is the most biased and wrongful one against China and one, if not corrected, can lead to a disastrous war that no one wants.
This story is not about China, or Xi Jingping, aggressively trying to take over areas of sea that did not belong to China. It is about how US changed a post World War II world order established between it, China and England.
Let me start with Japan. After WWII, when Japan surrendered. also known as the Proclamation Defining Terms for Japanese Surrender, contains the following statement: “ the "Japanese sovereignty shall be limited to the islands of , , , , and such minor islands as we determine," as had been announced in the in 1943”. This document was signed with Chinese participation. That is the “we” in the sentence.
Please note that Japan was not allowed to have Okinawa, on which there has been years of protest against US military bases. Neither was Japan allowed to occupy the island “in dispute” with China. US recognized this fact from the end of WWII until 1951, when it convened the so-call “San Francisco Conference of 1951” by specifically excluding China. In it, US made unilateral arrangement that would deny Chinese ownership of the islands that it previously recognized as belonging to China right after WWII and put them all “in dispute”.
These include island “in dispute: with Japan, Philippines, Vietnam and all others.
To this day, Japan does not have sovereignty over the island “in dispute” with China. America took over its “administrative” duty at San Francisco Conference from China and promised to relay it to UN. It never did. US kept the “administrative” rights until 1971 and then gave to Japan, at the opposition of China. When US signed defense agreement with Japan, the document had to be modified to cover “administrative” regions, instead of just the sovereign areas like all the other defense treaties it signed with other countries.
For betraying China, US, in return, got Japanese record of biological experiments done on Chinese people without anesthetics as well as biological weapons and denial of atrocities against Chinese people during its invasion of China. Japan is a country whose territorial ambition exceeds the size of her sovereign lands. For lying and for hiding from war crimes shielded by US, Japan is willing to subject its country to be a shameless vassal state of US. It is a country existing in shame with national psychological ramifications.
Now let us talk about Philippines. Why did US not return the island “in dispute” with China back to the Philippines when it left as the colonial master of the Philippines? The answer is very simple - US knew that the island never belonged to Philippines.
When US defeated Spain and took over as the colonial master of the Philippines in 1898, these two countries signed the Paris Treaty of 1898. In it, both countries acknowledged that the territories of Philippines lied EAST of east meridian 118. The island in dispute? It lies west of east Meridian 118!
It is really that simple. Philippine did not grab these island until after the San Francisco Treaty of 1951, from a still-militarily-weak China. But for the policy of “anyone but China” by the world’s hegemony, there should have never had any dispute in the South China Sea.
It is the same story for all the other island in South China Sea.
According to Wikipedia: List of countries with overseas military bases, China has less than a handful of overseas bases, none of which are located in South China Sea. Whereas the United States has over 400+ overseas military bases, in Japan, South Korea, Philippines, etc, surrounding China.

The fact that this dispute has been fully litigated by the International Court, which decided in favor of the Philippines, means that it is not a bilateral issue but is a question of adherence to the Law of the Sea Treaty, which has been ratified by China, the Philippines, and other countries in the region. One of China's objectives appears to be to show that it is not bound by the treaty, even though it signed the treaty. That makes resolution of disputes with China difficult, because treaties are a typical way of resolving international disputes, and China apparently doesn't think it is bound by the treaties it has signed.

The fact is that everyone has a right to freely navigate the South China Sea because it's a public water, which China claims in its entirety only because they want it (no legal basis). So yeah, Japan has all the rights to meddle considering the huge amount of shipments with Japanese commerce passing through it.

@ryan-smith Japan didn't claim but they did surrendered those islands to China, not the Philippines, which was still a US colony in 1945 😂 If PH really believes those were Filipino islands, why not ask the US government to take them back for you? Or maybe the US government tacitly admit that they agreed those islands were given to China decades ago... 😂
Japan also need to reflect themselves on their WWII crime history.
The 9-dash line merely demarcates the SCS islands claimed by China since 1945 after Japan surrendered the islands.
“Professor Robert Beckman, ISEAS July 2016:
      “DISPUTES ON TERRITORIAL SOVEREIGNTY
The Philippines did not raise any issue with respect to which state had a superior claim to sovereignty over the islands in the South China Sea. This is because an Arbitral Tribunal established under UNCLOS can only consider disputes on the interpretation or application of UNCLOS, and UNCLOS contains no provisions on how to resolve sovereignty issues.
Therefore, the award of the tribunal does not address the underlying dispute in the South China Sea - the competing claims to sovereignty over the islands.
Further, although the tribunal found that China’s claim to historic rights in the 9 dash line is not compatible with UNCLOS, it did not rule that the nine-dash line per se is illegal or invalid. China is under no obligation to formally denounce the nine-dash line.
The nine-dash line is still relevant because it shows the location of the various islands in the South China Sea over which China claims sovereignty.”

"South China sea/ West Philippine sea"
United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) said there is no legal basis for China to claim historic rights to resources within the sea areas falling within the “nine dash line”. (Present day ten dash line)
Every coastal state or country in the world can only claim up to 350 nautical miles of territory including the extended continental shelf and the exclusive economic zone (EEZ). It is not allowed to claim more beyond that with respect to United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea.
The historical narrative of China’s claim is false.
The Philippines is the first ever country to name the islands in the West Philippine Sea such as the panacot (Scarborough shoal) and the Los Bajos de Paragua (Spratly islands) in the 1734 Murillo Velarde map. There is no older map from any other country showing that Scarborough shoal or the Spratly’s belonging to them. The 1734 Murillo Velarde map has the cartouche of the kingdom of Spain, it is the official map of Spain to the Philippines under the regime of Spain. China’s oldest official maps shows that their southernmost territory is only up to Hainan which tells us that even if China wants to push their historical narrative, history itself is contrary to their narrative. The Chinese territory extended no further south than Hainan.
The Chinese 1914, 1924, 1937, and 1947 republic constitution provides that “the republic of China continues to be the territory of the former empire” this quote refers to the Qing dynasty territory which was the largest expansion of Chinese territory and that we know only extends until Hainan. Their own constitution clearly declares where their boundaries can only extend and this fact makes the claiming of the whole of south china sea contrary to their own constitution or in other words unconstitutional.
There was no evidence that China historically exercised exclusive control over the waters of south China sea or their resources. The tribunal is unable to identify any evidence that would suggest that China historically regulated or controlled fishing in the south China sea, beyond the limits of the territorial sea. China’s historical claim of the whole of south China sea is so inconsistent and at times contrary to each other that it is not even valid enough for their narrative. Thus, China never had historic rights in the south China sea.
The Philippines on the other hand have a strong case to present to the tribunal to the West Philippine Sea issue. The Philippines have factual evidence that they own the Spratly islands and Scarborough shoal, not only historical evidence but also legal rights. Two of the strongest Legal basis of the Philippines is the Washington Treaty between Spain and The United States of America and the Treaty of Peace of Paris.
The Treaty of Peace of Paris’ frame of reference is the 1734 Murillo Velarde map because it is the official Philippine territory under the Spanish regime and this is what they have ceded to the Americans under the Treaty of Washington and the Treaty of Paris which includes Scarborough shoal and the Spratly islands. Basically the Murillo Velarde map is still the basis that determines the territory of the Republic of the Philippines.
In the 1900 Treaty of Washington, Spain had relinquished to the United States all title and claim of title, which Spain may have had at the time of the conclusion of the Treaty of Peace of Paris, to any and all islands belonging to the Philippine Archipelago, lying outside the lines of the Treaty of Paris. These territories outside the lines, included Scarborough shoal and the Spratly islands.
The Philippines have absolute exclusive rights over the West Philippine Sea. The tribunal decision by the UNCLOS is clear that the West Philippine Sea is rightly owned by the Republic of the Philippines and not of China based on the clear evidence that the Philippines represented. China’s actions in the West Philippine Sea is not recognised by the UNCLOS and is therefore illegal under the eyes of international law. China by bullying small nations because of its greed and expansionist agenda is a bad example to the whole world and shouldn’t be tolerated by the United Nations. The law must always be upheld and the violators must always be punished and face the consequence.

The Philippines keeps accusing China of “ bullying and intimidating smaller countries” without mentioning at all the Philippine occupation of and encroachment on China’s territory in Nansha Qundao. That is a real propaganda “trap”. On the issue of Ren’ai Jiao, it’s not the size, but the behavior of a country that determines who is right and who is wrong.
Right after the Philippines deliberately grounded its warship on Ren’ai Jiao in 1999, which seriously violated China’s sovereignty, China made démarches to the Philippines, and the Philippines promised to tow away the warship several times. A senior official of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs made it clear that the Philippines had no intention of building any facility on Ren’ai Jiao and it doesn’t want to and will not be the first country to violate the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC). But 25 years on, not only hasn’t the Philippines fulfilled its promise to tow away the warship, it has even attempted to send construction materials for large-scale repair and reinforcement of the warship in order to build permanent structures on Ren’ai Jiao. The Philippines has gone back on its words, and stirred up trouble to provoke China. This is not only breach of the understandings between the two sides on handling the Ren’ai Jiao issue, but also a violation of the DOC, especially its Article 5 on refraining from action of inhabiting on the presently uninhabited islands, reefs, shoals, cays, and other features. The Philippines is clearly responsible for the current tensions in the South China Sea.
China and ASEAN countries have long been committed to properly managing and resolving disputes through dialogue and consultation between states directly involved, and worked together to jointly maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea, which has kept the South China Sea generally stable. But for some time, the Philippines has been pulling non-regional actors into the South China Sea affairs to back Philippine provocations and violation of China’s sovereignty. The Philippines has been pursing selfish gains at the expense of the consensus reached by countries in the region. This is the main reason why the situation in the the South China Sea has escalated and become more complicated.
The Philippines need to respect the facts, observe the relevant understandings between the two sides and DOC provisions, follow the consensus reached between China and ASEAN countries, and return to the right track of properly managing and resolving disputes through dialogue and consultation as soon as possible.

It should be noted that China legally declared in 1932 that its southernmost territory was limited to the Paracels (prior to this, their southernmost claimed territory was limited to Hainan island ONLY). 1932 was the year they first claimed any feature south of Hainan island and announced it to the international community. The Vietnamese were the first to claim the Paracels decades before 1932.
When France occupied six features in the Spratlys in 1933, China did NOT protest, as they have declared that their southernmost territory was limited to the Paracels a year earlier. In 1934, China again declared that their southernmost territory was the Paracels, specifically Triton Island. Meaning, by international law, they recognize that anything south of the Paracels are NOT Chinese territories. They only changed it in 1946, they created a modern map and started saying that Scarborough Shoal and the Spratly was their "historic territory" even though they admitted twice before that their southernmost territory was limited to the Paracels "specifically Triton Island".

It should also be noted that China itself re-published all its ancient maps in three volumes in 1990, 1994, and 1997. All of there "ancient and historical maps" showed that the southernmost territory was Hainan. They afterwards pulled back those books after they realizes that their actual ancient and historical maps were against the ridiculous claims! The re-publication of those maps literally doomed themselves in regards to their claims!
The ground for their claims is flimsy at best and can easily be defeated in court, which was seen during the Philippines v China case that effectively invalidated China's dashed claims in 2016. In should be magnified that during the court proceedings, China itself sent a legally-binding Note Verbale, where they reiterated their recognition of the 1900 Treaty of Washington and the 1930 US-UK Treaty, which recognizes Scarborough Shoal and the Spratly Islands as exclusive territories of the Philippines! They literally aided the Philippines' case with their own arguments!
