My Dad was born in an household with 6 other siblings, extreme poverty and unemployment. They used to live in a house which could be described as being as equivalent to the size of an average Elevator.
My Dad got an Opportunity to be one of those who are cheap labor for the UAE. While the work conditions weren’t good, with extreme discrimination against him since he was a Non-Muslim (which is an issue unless you are in a decent position after which it doesn’t matter), my Dad described how good the UAE was. They have made the best possible use of the resources at their disposal. Having Oil in itself doesn’t make you lucky (Venezuela ahem ahem), but the way the Royal Family has worked for its people is remarkable. It doesn't provide the critical view of issues as in other Caspian Report videos. Like the involvement in the Sudan crisis. Or the role in the Yemeni war. Always in sides that oppose KSA interests. It's one of the reasons why Saudi Arabia has their Vision 2030. Mohammed bin Salman understood very quickly they can no longer rely on fossil fuels, they saw how UAE is now less reliant on fossil fuels. At one point fossil fuels were pretty much 100% of the UAE's economy, now it's 30% that is massive diversification of the economy. And MBS can see they need to diversify the economy as soon as possible otherwise they will get left behind.

With the creation of the UAE foreign legion to fight the Houthis, this base might see some action soon. A solid approach foe their demographics, to rely on mercenaries. The UAE might come to parallel Carthage in ways more so than Sparta. Interesting times ahead indeed

Dubai in the 1820 wasn't even the largest settlement in the coast. Ras al-Khaima was the center of power at the time.
The trade hub of the Indian Ocean in the 1800s were Aden and Bombay. Bassora as well, to some extent. Dubaï was just a halt on the way.

As an Emarati, I can tell you that the comparison to Sparta is quite laughable.
Spartans gained power through military might and conquest based on a militaristic, highly disciplined society that doesn't tolerate weakness, luxury, or diversity.
We are so submerged in luxury, opposed to traditional way of life (unless it is superficial in which case we love our Abayas, Shilas, Gutra, Igal, Kandora, Bisht, Lukaimat, Khameer, Betheethah, Karak,..,etc), impressed with everything foreign and are very, very WEAK (in all ways that count).
We represent 10% of our country's population.
Our scientific and academic development is terrible for what we have.
We have no freedom of speech or expression.
Conflict wise we have not entered a war since our state was created and those skirmishes we had were always to our detriment (our attempts to regain our islands from Iran and war on the Houthees is an example).
And our economy is still overly dependent on Oil as central source of income decades after our founders passed away.
If anything, the only resemblance we have with the Spartans is that we try to hit above our weight but rely on a finite resource to do so.
This hitting is done indirectly via proxy war and militias.
Otherwise we have nothing to compare us to Sparta, Spartans, Greeks, Persians, Arabs or Europeans...we are just a product of our times.😢

off topic: been watching off and on for several years and I’ll tell you what Mr. Shirvan’s English accent had just gotten better and better! Haha, actually he has always had great English. Just his accent that is, seems to be getting more and more Americanized. 😅 Anyways, keep up the fantastic work I greatly appreciate it.

    Anyway heres a brownies recipe
    Ingredients:
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
    2 cups granulated sugar
    1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    1 tablespoon vanilla extract
    4 large eggs
    1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 cup chocolate chips (optional, but highly recommended)
    Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Melt the butter: In a saucepan over low heat, melt the butter.
Add sugar: Stir in the granulated sugar until just combined.
Transfer to a mixing bowl: Remove from heat and pour the mixture into a heat-proof mixing bowl.
Add eggs: Stir in the eggs, one at a time.
Incorporate dry ingredients: Stir in the cocoa powder, salt, baking powder, and vanilla extract until well combined.
Fold in flour: Gradually fold in the all-purpose flour until no streaks remain.
Add chocolate chips: If using, fold in the chocolate chips.
Spread the batter: Spread the brownie batter into a parchment-lined 9x13-inch baking pan.
Bake: Bake for approximately 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).
Cool and cut: Let the brownies cool completely in the pan, then cut into squares.
    Tips:
For extra fudginess, slightly underbake the brownies.
You can add nuts (such as walnuts or pecans) if you like.
Serve with a dusting of powdered sugar or a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

I don't think I fully agree with the statement "Politics, after all, has no relation to morals." Yes, there are mechanisms that help to approach a situation rationally, but there is a contradiction to be found in Shirvan's narrative. For example, one could argue that Arab solidarity with Palestine is not in the interest of Saudi Arabia. And if politics were amoral, why would there be Millennium Development Goals in the UN, like eradication of extreme poverty.

UAE treats expats pretty well in my opinion, not perfect but definitely a little under EU level. You are probably mistaking them for the rest of the GCC. Those countries treat them pretty poorly

By far the best country to live at several thousand kilometers radius from its borders. Can’t understand why 🇦🇪 gets so many haters. Jealousy, misinformation or religious fundamentalism are the reasons…
