- In this video, Sinead, a tour guide with Free Tours by Foot London, takes you on a tour of the public areas of Kensington Palace and the Sunken Gardens. NEXT VIDEO: Kensington Gardens • Kensington Gardens Lon... .
Set in the beautiful parkland of Kensington Gardens, Kensington Palace, which dates from the 17th century, is most well known for being home to members of the royal family like William and Mary, Princess Diana, Prince Harry, and now Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Join Sinead as she climbs the King's Staircase to admire the Georgian paintings inspired by the palaces of Rome before heading into the King's Apartments followed by the Queen's Apartments, where you will get a taste of the Pricess Victoria exhibit.
The tour ends at the Sunken Gardens where we will visit the new Princess Diana Memorial statue.

I saw Kensington Palace in Nov 2017 when they had all of Diana's famous dresses on display. It was so magical. I so hope I can return one day!
We saw them too. Lovely display, and it was amazing to see how small she really was, though she was tall.
We hope you can, too, Bri!
As as child living in West Kensington in the 50s, my friends and I often used to visit Kensington Palace and at that time there was the part that was known as the Kensington Palace Museum in the Palace. It was a wonderful place for us youngsters and I remember it had the most extensive exhibits of the royal doll houses, many of them, which were fascinating to post-war kids like me who had very little. They also had costume displays under glass of course and at one time I remember they exhibited Princess Margaret's Wedding Dress. They also had interactive displays and I particularly remember one of the Great Fire of London where you pressed a button and it lit up with imaginary flames.
On a Sunday morning the round pond would have lucky kids and enthusiasts sailing their boats and large scale models of steamships which would often stop working and their owners would have to paddle out to retrieve them. We could only afford a jam jar and little fishing net and would catch tiddlers. There was also the "fairy tree" which was a knarled old tree which had faries and elves and creatures carved into it and it was always exciting when the faded figures got a new coat of paint and were given a new lease of life. If you search on The Elfin Oak, Kensington Gardens you can see it is still there. It is now behind a protective cage but in my day you could touch it.
We also loved to run through the leafy arches around the sunken garden (which didn't look as manicured is it does today and had a mysterious air about it, looking a bit abandoned).
And then, of course, we would go to all the Museums in Exhibition Road and would marvel at things like the magic door that would open as you approached it which was such a novelty then but is now taken for granted on many stores and entrances.
I could ramble on and on but it was a magical world for us youngsters and all free, just costing a few pennies on the bus to be transported to such delights. Yes London was a great place to grow up in and I miss it, having settled for a quiet life on the South Coast for my twilight years.
What a lovely comment! Thank you for sharing this with us :)
@@FreeToursbyFootLondon Thank you for reading and commenting on the ramblings of an old lady xx I also enjoyed your stroll down Kensington High Street which also brought memories of all the lovely department stores like Barkers and Derry & Toms. Our favourite was the old C & A where for a couple of pounds you could get a decent winter coat or a couple of dresses. It really was a happy stroll down memory lane x
Thank You for that beautiful story of your Childhood, when I was in London we went and toured Kensington Palace. Princess Margaret had recently passed away and we were able to tour her apartment as well as Queen Victoria’s nursery. I would love to do it again. Love from Canada❤
Beautiful….it must be amazing, living in a Country with so much history … I love my Country, the United States 🇺🇸 but, of course, our history is not ancient ….Thank you, for this marvelous tour ❤️
Love that name Sinead ! Probably because all the Sineads seem to be gorgeous ! Frankly, I'd get depressed too if I had to live in Kensington Palace. Its history is fascinating, but that drab decor would put years on me !
I loved Princess Diana she was lovely I did see once just after they got married they came to Sheffield were we lived for a few years she was beautiful never forget seeing her Thank you again for your lovely videos love to go round with you Take care hope to see you again soon xx
Would like to add That Queen Victoria had a terrible childhood here, her Mother made her wear Holly round her neck so as to keep her head up at all times. Her Nanny was more like a Mother, but when Victoria got Married her Nanny could not let go. She did not get on with ALBERT, so with a sad heart, Victoria told her that she was sending her on a holiday back to Germany for a short break. Victoria was heart brocken. She also moved her Mother to other quarters. The first thing that Victoria did when she announced Queen, was to move to Buckingham Palace, Victoria was the first Monarch to live in Buckinham Palace. (Just a little bit of trivia) Did you know that the MABLE ARCH was once the entrance to Buckingham Palace, It was removed because it was not wide enough for the Royal Coach to go through. (Enough for now)
So sad to think her childhood was so controlled
Wonderful information here , delighted she had years of albeit short happiness with Albert
Ironically the controlling nature of her mother back fired in years to come
Always find Victorias story remarkable
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment
Sinéad
I was amazed when I saw the monument/grave of Victoria's mother that Victoria put up on her Frogmore property! It was more impressive than the graves of a majority of the Kings and Queens! She also allowed her to live in Frogmore House!
@@abbatrouble
Yeah i watched young victoria movie 😌
Yes. She literally grew up alone. No other kids to talk to, play with, go to school with. No chance to establish friendships. No social interactions whatsoever. That's pure abuse. Talk about having everything, yet having nothing.
Another fantastic tour. Thanks Sinead!
Our pleasure Ann
Thank you for your kind words
Sinead
I can’t imagine princess Margaret with her sleeves rolled up and her gloves on even though some people said she was a bit of a scrubber. Kensington Palace absolutely stunning and to me that will always be the home of princess Diana. Another fabulous tour from Sinead thank you so much 🙏.

Senead; another great watch, thank you so much. You have such a way of making a good day ever better, your narration is so enjoyable. Why do so many people on the sidewalks of London stare at their phones and not take in the amazing city sights? Thanks again.....

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again your a gem
That’s all I see all day people stuck in phones , sometimes even on tours

I heard the queen is not moving back into Buckingham. So sad. She has been a true blessing
Very true. Spending most of her time at Sandringham and Windsor now.
Those gardens are my ideal. Plenty of room to breathe and stunning views.

Beautiful tour, this was the highlight of my first trip to London in 2005. At the time there was an exhibit of court dress with an audio tour that was amazing. I was delighted to go up the Kings stairway and see the other parts of this magnificent palace. Apt 1A was part of the tour, only a few rooms which were empty except for photos of how Princess Margaret and her husband used them. I had tea and cake at the Orangery. Diana's dress were also on display and included in the admission. I will always remember this experience as it was well worth the price of admission.
It truly is Deb
The palaces are well worth the price incredible to think you are walking in the same rooms as these key figures in history
Sinéad
Great comments Deb. I was in London that year and also toured Apt 1A. Weren’t we lucky to walk through the future rooms of the duke and Duchess of Cambridge? It was quite empty at the time but still had a view through the a small opening in the wall of Princess Margaret’s blue drawing room. The opening was empty but had once housed Lord Snowden’s movie projector.
