Restoration Old Rusty Carpentry Axe

- Hello folks! Today I want to show you my new restoration project! I bought this carpentry axe at flea market. I found information about that shape of axe, it’s prototype of German old carpentry axes. Well, restoration time has come.
Restoration process:
I used rust remover liquid to remove old paint and rust from axe.
I cleaned rest dust via water and cleaning agent.
I used iron brushes to removed patina and some dark places from the axe
I used files to correct shape of axe and little spots; also I used sandpapers and orbital sanding machine.
For heat treat I used warm water and oil.
For handle, I used birch tree. Finally, I burned the handle and impregnation via linseed oil.

"I don't have a lathe".....ummmm, yes you do, I saw you using it. Just because it's homemade and didn't cost $5,000 doesn't mean it isn't what you intended it to be. You made it, and it worked very well. Thumbs up.
Это называется туристический топорик. Он идёт с завода на сменной металлической рукоятке, на которую так же идут в комплекте лопата, нож, пила. То что он похож на какой то там немецкий топор просто случайность.

Андрей Медведев в счёт репараций из Германии было вывезено в СССР достаточно много производственных линий и передано патентов. Например достаточно популярный походный набор виде складных столовых приборов, ложки и вилки, поставляемый для солдат вермахта. После войны этот «столовый складишок» выпускали в Львове на не большом предприятие, разница только в клемах на изделии. Возможно и этот туристический набор постигла такая же участь.

Your lathe works as good as any we've seen on RUclips, and fits into a handymans budget, as most would say it does what you want it to do, that all that count. The axe/hatchet looks like a tool for real forest workers. Nicely done, sir. Nicely done.

Excellent work. I really love this piece. I agree with other comments. You should make videos of how you made your lathe. It helps people save $$$. When I watch other videos of stuff like that they are okay. But if someone likes your channel I'd say it would be better to add stuff like this. I think that the lathe is great.

I have one of those axes, it has a metal handle with a spring clip that locks into the hole on the side, inside the handle is a clip on blade and saw also fits a small trenching shovel. All in a small belt bag.
Думаю, что как топор ....это конечно лучше, чем ничего.... Да ещё и с таким круглым топорищем... В общем это не топор, а больше игрушка для туристов. Но в любом случае лайк за старания!

I'm going to make that lathe! Great idea. I've seen those ax heads in multi-tools for camping. It came with the ax, small shovel head and a brush saw that all fit on the same handle with a push-button retainer.

Great video, I know there's a lot of comments about the lathe, I do hope you plan on doing a how to make a homemade lathe video, I'd love to give it a try myself before I go and invest a couple thousand dollars for one.
I agree with you. It would definitely be nice if people share how they do make shift tools. Not like the others that we all see. From the actual guys from their videos. Helps people save $$$. If it works for him then why not. I'd rather watch people like this here.

i had a axe jist like this it came with a shovel head and a saw head the handle was hollow steel tube with a capture button to allow you to change tools on the fly i bought it at smoky mountain knife works

Hello sir, thank you for attention! Yes, I'm sure. I used cheap rust remover, name is "yeetis" in yellow plastic bottle (550ml and 2L).
Nice job of cleaning it up..... But this axe is made very strange... With rivits?... and I wouldn't use it as I am sure it is not up to the job of chopping something like oak. Seems to be more of an ornamental stylised item than a genuine axe.
@1:23 now bake at 350 for 30 minutes
And a wire burn at the base of the handle would be a nice touch imo

Great restoration as always, just one question though. Did you not consider reusing the old handle, to these tired eyes it looked to be in good condition.

Well, I just found little information about that shape of axe. There are many opinions about the purpose of the hole in the form of a keyhole - someone says to mount on heavy equipment, someone for fixing it to the harness/belt of a carpenter, there is even a view that it is a device for straightening nails or the hole provided to hang the axe on a nail to break or change activities while working at height.
Search for Vintage German Survival Axe. They were designed with a detachable hollow handle that held a saw blade. Also came with a shovel head. They were typically assembled in the shovel configuration stored in a canvas pouch with the axe head carried in another attached but separate pouch.

I enjoyed watching you refurbish this axe. Very good project. But I don't see the need for the cutting water bottles over and over and over. I realize you are trying to show how sharp it is, but nobody ever uses any axe to open any plastic bottle. A more sane example would be to actually use it in a real life situation. That is what they are made for anyways. Thumbs Up! JMHO

I about climbed into the screen to beat him with a dead stick! Do Not Quench an Axe In Water!! This rapid cooldown changes the molecular structure of the metal to the shape of grains of sand. Always quench in oil. I can't stress that enough, especially with an axe. I appreciate the double quench but by quenching in oil you keep the grains tight. This is especially important for striking metals such as an ax or a weapon which holds up to armor, shields and another person's weapon.
Water only has a few places in a work area, for fire, drinking and to splash your face an occasional partial quench to soften the spine or finish an area which wasn't originally quenched so to keep it soft for drilling. Oh, and metals for the aerospace industry, cheaply made axes, sawblades and metals that will not be used for striking or struck against. Very few metals are good with water for the purpose it was used here.
Some of you are asking how I know this fact. Well, I spent quite a lot of time with friends and meeting people who do blacksmithing for a living. Grantied most had only been in the industry for no less than 20 years.
Other than all of that, I really like this guy. I hope he gets the most out of what he does and enjoys it too!
