Ahh I’m loving the Copart series recently. First the TT and now this beaut! You’re one of few RUclipsrs I consistently enjoy watching and it’s these videos that keep me coming back.
Means a lot, glad you’re enjoying the content, thanks so much!
It's a shame the sound system isn't working - that should be the top Dolby Prologic II system, which was absolutely banging back in the 00s, and still would be great by modern standards. At the Volvo dealership we had a demo CD with various sound clips on it, (including things like a jet taking off and a train whizzing by) which was played (only on the Dolby Prologic cars) to impress customers.
Bad for leaking under the floor from grommets under the scuttle panel. Then it leaks water down behind the carpet and under the floor. The drivers side floor is where the amp sits.
Haha that’s so awesome. Hopefully I can find a fix for it, although if it’s fibre optics could be expensive/uneconomical
Get the car up to scratch, head lining, radio, wing mirrors, little bit of body work, wheel refurb then maybe some overland additions - chunky rubber, roof rack, few videos and trips and then auction it off. I think that’d be a great series, something different and maybe get your money back if not make a bit. 👍🏻
Great idea, overland trip back to its home in Sweden. Actually looking at buying one myself, abet much lower mileage than 300+k
Completely agree with the above idea. It would be well worth getting the spares online and trying to get everything working. Nothing like a car in this shape to develop car repair/build knowledge and experience.
Hi Joel, I had an 04 D5 SE 10 years ago, but I was lucky enough not to have any of the usual problems (non working hifi and memory seats that have a mind of their own...). The hifi system is great when it works, can take 6 CDs, the heated seats are fantastic in the winter (setting one is HOT and the second one sets your arse on fire lol). You may find if you get the fibre optic working that there will be many issues that come up on the dash - the rear parking sensors like to work when they feel like it but enjoy, it's a great engine with a great snarl when you floor it but it's not fast and watch out when exiting junctions, it needs a bit of time to spool the torque converter up!
Great video. Really love these high mileage, older cars. The leather looks incredible for 300k miles too! Look forward to seeing what you do with the car.
What a great video Joel, i love stuff like this. HIgh mileage, low budget that the average individual will take a punt on. I absolutely love the videos.
Thanks so much!
when i watched your copart video and saw this xc90 i was so tempted to bit on it myself, i couldn't find it though, its a good thing i didn't find it though because now you have it! good luck on your XC90 journey joel, would love to see a road trip or two in this car!
I would love to see you restore this car, what a great project. The highest mileage ever recorded was achieved in a Volvo P1800. Irv Gordon clocked up 3.2 million miles would you believe.
What a legend. And the car would go on forever
More XC90 Content please! I've been wanting one for ages but have not pulled the trigger as yet. Finding reviews of old cars in modern videos is impossible so really appreciate it mate.
More to come!
What a bargain love the Volvo XC90 it sounds like the sounds like a fuse has gone as the entertainment system is blank we all look forward to see more videos with this car with you the wife what she thinks way it drives as well ?
Thats class! I had a 2001 S80 Executive with the T6 twin turbo straight 6 lump, had a fridge, dvd player & ps1 in the back and was 4 seater only, loved that car!
Not sure if the Volvo systems are similar but I’ve got a fibre optic system in my BMW. If you unplug various components you can see the light flashing in the plugs. No light means there’s an issue further down the line. A decent wiring diagram is needed too.
I hope this is better than the XC70 D5 I had a few years ago, there's a module for everything! also the Haldex isn't the best.. hope it goes well on a plus, the D5 for a diesel sounds great!
Joel, you need to take this on a road trip of your own, it seems like with 300 000 , the previous owner(s) have gone on their own many adventures. - you were correct in your intro about it definitely having its own story.
@@CathodeRayNipplezwhat an optimistic soul you are. Not.
The ABS light is probably a wheel sensor, which is very simple to change. The first switch with the light sign on it is a disable for the internal alarm sensor, so you can lock the car and only have the external triggers set, if you have a dog in the car for instance.
Thanks for the info!
Show me a old VOLVO that doesn’t have the ABS light on…
Rarely watch other long videos all the way through but do every time on yours! 👏👏
Great fun watching Joel 😊love the Volvo 😊how’s the jag doing .?
Great video Joel, keep it coming, love to see you bring the XC90 back to life.
More to come!
@@itsjoel How's the MOT prep coming along? It's due in a couple weeks...
Another praiseworthy video Joel. I've always had a soft spot for this car even though I've never been inside an XC90.
Unfortunately I'm on the edge of the ULEZ zone so I would need a petrol version, which I am guessing would not be as good.
Will be eventually getting one of these to replace our 2010 c4 g picasso which I won’t be sad to see gone , looking forward to seeing more videos on this !
Exactly what we need as a family an xc90. Prices on auto trader are healthy for these at the moment tho ! 😂
Didn't know you had a podcast. Listened to the latest episode and subscribed. The chemistry between you and Charlie is great!
This shape of XC90 was my dream car for years. During the Beast from the East snow storms a few years ago, I decided to buy an old one as I never wanted to get caught in the snow again. Anyway, it was old, abused, the alternator didn’t work properly, but what an amazing big boat of a car!
Hi Joel, you mentioned an issue with the battery, these had a habit of blowing fuses if you charged them - check your manual for the fuse/relay for the infotainment system and check it hasn't let go!
Thinking the same.
I did already check the fuses and found nothing, but I’ve ordered a new set and will replace them all to see if it makes a difference!
I think you should get the audio working - Volvo factory systems are absolutely cracking. I think there are more modules in the boot (under the side windows) and they can get damp. Usual procedure is to remove them from the loop one at a time.
Great vid Joel very enjoyable 👍👍 well done on the new car. Fan of these.
Great video always liked these, and good purchase. 👍👍👍👍
Hi Joel. Great content as always. Just wondered how you ended up taxing it in the end without the v5 and wrong ref no. Some people say you can goto the post office with a v62 and they will tax it there and then but only if its been in the trade
you can just do it at the post office with a form.
Maybe do a John o groats to lands end and compare it to the last one you did to see how efficient it is considering the mileage
Great idea!
These are good cars, as are all Volvos of that era. The 2.4D engine is tremendous. I expect it will have had a gearbox or gearbox rebuild by now. I ran a manual version 6 years ago and it was quite something.
great purchase Joel : loads of great content in this one . Let's hope nothing too expensive mechanically.....
I have one and it's a money pit problems are never ending and very expensive to fix ,at least you got the engine without the swirl flaps ,theres always some fault code to annoy you good luck with it anyway
Can’t believe the quality of the leather in this car! I’d love to have a bit of spare cash to have a punt on a car like this. Looking forward to seeing the detail video 👍👍👍
Thanks!
Most likely the steering angle sensor or the abs ring , pretty standard for the anti skid light to be on
The stuff on the wheels looks like embedded brake dust, which should come off with cleaner and fallout remover?....however, it could also be corrosion looking at the condition of them.
Brilliant video as ever though Joel :)
Great purchase Joel love the volvo
Love your usual enthusiasm Joel, very decent motor when new, looking forward to the next one 😏👍
Thanks 👍
I used to have an xc90 until a few months back in the same colour. Loved the seats, extremely comfortable ride. The d5 felt stressed and the box isn't great. Absolute pig to park. Great value for money though for families.
really like these and always wanted one just couldn't understand why they didn't put a bigger engine in it than there saloons, won't be pulling much with that surely for the size of it you'd of thought! om606 conversions welcomed !
As well as various versions of the D5 engine, they did a 2.9 T6 (with terrible gearbox), a 3.2 I6 and a 4.4 V8.
I've had the Euro 4 D5 (185bhp) and now have the V8 :)
@@alzdeane think the V8 be only option for poke, good choice!!!
Always had a soft spot for these, despite their leaking through windscreens, angle gear spline awd problem thing, electrical faults etc. But seem a comfortable thing and owners swear by them.
Good luck with it! Lovely car you've got there what a bargain, fix that rooflining somehow though!
You can stage 1+ these and get a LOT more power for bsr here in sweden! A good tip
High mileage and high spec is my favourite used car. Because of the spec you dont feel too bad sinking time and money into it. However maybe not such a good idea unless you do most of your own repairs.
The left most button is for limiting security features, like if you want to leave a dog or kid in the car and lock it and don’t want them to trigger the movement sensor, this button will turn that off.
Love this. Restore it to its former glory and carry on driving it till you hit half a million miles. Make it a hero 🙌
Hi Joel. definitely shows as 1 previous keeper, (that's based on the current details) so you will be the 3rd owner of this car. V5 issue dates 16-10-2004, 29-06-2010 & 17-10-2011 - info taken from carbaba who do a free basic check for you
I own a 2003 XC90 and they're generally quite bulletproof. The ABS problem is most likely the sensor. Another likely culprit is the ABS ring whic necessitates the removal of the driveshaft. The CEM (Central Electric Module) can be prone to acting up but the good news is that they can be repaired. Volvo Diagnostic in Tilbury offers a module repair service and if the module is beyond repair they can supply reconditioned ones a lot cheaper than new ones. The Volvo forums are a wealth of knowledge. There are a few channels (mine included) with helpful Volvo content.
With the ICM/DIM issue, I’ve cleaned out the fibre optic connections, and used a bypass loop to try and isolate the problem. All I’ve managed to do is get the ICM screen to flash Dolby pro logic for a few seconds! Haha…
I had the same issue it was a board in the boot that had burnt out, it also cause the battery to drain over a 10 hr period.
My dad has owned two XC90s in the past: a 2004 model in dark green (BF04 AFN), and a late-2010 model in Navy blue (CX60 WBK).
Just check the fuses first for radio etc
The button you said was Homelink is used to turn off the internal alarm sensors (if you need to lock the car with a dog in it for example).
Looks great. Hopefully you’ll invest a bit of money into it. Should get a fairly good return from content on it. Tidy the bodywork, DIY wheel refurb, new plates and wing mirrors etc etc. Do an engine service and other bits and pieces too. Well worth doing
Love the car. Hope you tidy it up and keep it.
The info system as you said runs off and optical system. I recommend buying an optical bypass and disconnect each module one at a time and plug the bypass in until you see it power up. My v50 had the same issue and it turned out to be the iPod module had corrosion on the pins. Otherwise cracking car plenty of life in it once the few bits are sorted. I am a massive Volvo fan and have had many some love them and some hate them but all the issues these cars are common problems and are shared. Looking forward to more content.
Thanks for the tip, I've checked all the fuses etc and have inspected the optical connections for red lights, but like you've suggested i've ordered an optical bypass. When I plug in the optical bypass and something powers up, does that mean that it is not the system causing the issue?
@@itsjoel you need to check all the modules one by one to the point where the red optical light does not shine back out of the module which breaks the link. The bypass allows the optical light to continue on to the next module. You could have a burned out module but you need to find the diagram on Google showing where all the modules are. I have some for the v50 as an example if you wish me to share by email.
we need a road trip in this!
Joel, the speedometer screen is very common to go, the solder joints crack, its fixable and not very expensive, around 50 quid
Looking forward to seeing what you do with it. (shame you didn't go for the V8 version though).
I’d love the v8 petrol, but definitely wouldn’t of got one of those for under £1k!
Brilliant purchase! ROAD TRIP! 😁😁🚗🚓🚓🏎🏎
Hi Joel. Good looking and practical car for the money. I only hope the underside is as good as the outside.
It is, (if you didn't know) was registered in Scotland. Which is a well known location for the
dreaded rust bug to breed. 🤷♂
A lot of car for the money the condition of the seats including the driver's, is most impressive. The decission now is do you spend money on it to improve it or just adopt the "bangernomics principle" and run as it is!
Welcome to the Volvo youtube clan 😂 you now can't leave!
I drove one for 2 years and it was great! Paid £3k for 180k miler which I then sold at 220k The only problem I had which I found out is very common is the auto gearbox (made by Aisin Warner) suffers from clunky/jolting gear change issues. A lot of people believe it's because Volvo said it's sealed for life and never needs servicing. Toyota use the same gearbox but the service states the oil must be changed every so many thousand miles! My one had the same factory cabled car phone built in! The ringtone if someone called was Greensleeves 😂I loved how comfortable the seats were and swear that car cured my bad back! The pop up sat nav was at such a weird angle it was hard to look at it! Volvo claim noone has ever died in one. Sometimes a bad fuse, bulb out or dead head unit can cause issues with the most system.
Greeat choice of car bro, wanna see a full service and insspection on this 🙂
Worth a punt at that price. I see the MOT is due in 2 weeks! SO first, I would go for a long drive and get something out of it. Then get the MOT done and see what it tells you. All being well, if you think you are going to keep it, try and find out when the cambelt was last done, and if you cant find out, or it is overdue, get it done. Or... you could just wing it. It is a lot of car, but like other cars of this age, if you spend money on it, you probably won't get it back. So have a bit of fun, then sell it on.... because I am sure you would get more than your money back.. . if it passes the MOT.... and even if it doesn't get your drive in now first, then absolute worst case, if it did fail the MOT, you can sell it for almost breakeven...
I have a '08 D5 Summum since 7 years back. If the transmission, Haldex and rear differential are ok then this can be saved. But keep in mind that this is not a drivers car even when everything works
considering you can get a good one for 1-2 k there's over 2k on bodywork problems on that already
So. I’ve was a test engineer at Volvo cars and worked a tone with these cars. Your instrument cluster get its data via CAN. Not the via optic (MOST). The radio display, ICM users both MOST and CAN. So I would start by verifying that you have 12v to that. If not, you would get this errors.
Love this kind of video!
Those lights with some wet and dry and a machine polish then to protect them stick a coat of lacquer over them, then will look as good as new.
This makes me happy, you are living MY dream too
Great car , age and wear and tear related signs , try not to
Go down the path of the jag but keep it and enjoy mate
had one of these for 8 years.. yes theyre a bit on the agricultural side.. but a workhorse.. awesome
A few sharpe snarky comments I have a 2011 xc90 venture 200hp 110k miles lovely thing and very plush still interior wise, I run it alongside a Ford Mondeo estate and love both cars. The Volvo is my little treat occasional drive pretty much like a guy would run an MG sports or classic so keeps me happy and I don’t have that itch to run down to the dealers to be screwed over and definitely not an EV.
Hello, the ABS light od the wheel sensor or the tone ring. Check the faults and you'll know. I've bought a 06 XC90, executive, but with the mighty V8. It's still being restored (oil leaks and general maintance). Does yours have the accoustic glass? Cheers from Poland.
Any advice already have squillls from front right tire
I loved my XC90 D5 geartronic
I’m 38 and got a 2010 xc90 got it for 2000 pound with 90 000 on clock but had problems but soon as I fixed it all I knew it best car iv
Ever had
I would love a Volvo van, wish they did them now 😂 just awesome motors
Great motor. Had one when the kids were small, safe not fast 👍
Never really heard a bad thing about them…
Cant imagine how that drives with 163ps, I've got a 2011 XC90 D5 with Polestar Optimisation (215ps), even then it still needs more power.
Loving the videos
Thanks!
Great car great carpets great price
Kevin
We've scraped this thing through an MOT for the past few years ! Can't believe it's still going. Even got the Austin Metro side repeater we drilled into the wing last year as the doors don't match !
Oh cool, did you send it to Copart or did you part ex the car?
@@itsjoel No we were the garage he brought the car to repair !
Devils Juice acid based wheel cleaner might get those wheel stains out, I've had tremendous results with the stuff
Thanks, might give that a go!
308k thats some build quality in fairness 🙂👍
I do admire your optimism but, I couldn’t live with the level of work required to put this right! Cheap indeed but, it needs a re spray, much work inside and out and none of it will be cheap!
Have you checked the fuses for the radio it might all be on one the screen and radio
12,6V is still not good enough. Fully charged battery is about 13.2V.
Absolute bargain! I like it
Pretty sure the wheels are in that state due to the pads running low and the wheels being sprayed with hot metallic dust... the metallic dust embeds in the paint and then rusts...
what did you do with the red TT
This car most likely had more than 1 owner as the last V5 was issued in 2011 so could have been why there was an issue originally trying to tax it etc
Tell us your dad is having a mid life crisis without telling us
Rogue indicator on the front left wing? The right one is on the door!
I see you took my advice !!
I had one of these back in 2009 in the same colour. Magic Blue Pearl I think? Wondering why your side indicators are on the wings? Supposed to be on the doors?
I think the side repeater indicators moved in 2005/2006 to the door mirrors. My dad bought a late 2004 V70 (2005 MY) and the repeaters ore on the side strip. The following MY they were moved to the mirrors
@@cmartin_ok I think I remember that. But I’ve never seen them high on the wing. Either on the door on the front of the rubbing strip or the wing mirror as you say.
When’s the MOT due?
16:58- You've got a leak. Looks quite thin/watery but too far back to be coolant or screenwash, and looks too far off centre to be transmission. Hopefully not brake fluid or diesel.
I think you’ll find the button you didn’t know about is to disable the alarm when you are on a ferry so the vibration doesn’t keep triggering it.
Or to switch the internal sensors off when locking the car with a dog or child in (yes, I know: not on hot day. Obviously🙄)
Have you bought the car as a real project or just as a load lugger ?
I would spent as little as possible just to keep it running and pass the MOT. That would be a brilliant bangernomics story. Music? Use your phone with a separate bluetooth speaker! DO IT ON THE CHEAP! Really going to enjoy this story - good luck!
