With every mod I research or stumble across… this guy is always there to tell us not to 😂 He probably has a point a lot of the time but what a buzz kill!
I mean, he does make it clear that we need to get a tune. That goes for any mod that relates to fuel or air. Intakes, exhaust and such all need a tune afterwards to get the most out of the particular mod.
Imagine living near this guy? "Yeah honey, he's outside yelling at the camera again. I don't know he's revving up a motorcycle now? He's yelling more and waving his arms.
You can change the exhaust without making it louder. For example install a true dual no crossover exhaust on a V8, and install two separate cats and two separate mufflers. Opening the exhaust will decrease engine power loss at the exhaust stroke and sends that lost torque to the crankshaft. This will not really change how the engine operates just makes it easier for it to work so less power is lost. 99% of modern engines have self-adjusting ECU set to certain parameters mostly based on airflow, it's not until you change the AFR mixtures or timing that you need to tune the engine, not that you can't get any more power out of the engine with a tune however, factories tend to mass produce engines and ECU's, not really tuning them for each individual engine. Making it easier for the engine to work, like putting on a less restrictive air-intake or less restrictive exhaust does not generally require tuning because engines are tuned on a engine dyno without any air or exhaust restriction.
It all depends on the car, it is true if you want the full benefit of the mod that u will need a tune to go along with it. However, not all cars are universal I was able to get 40whp on full bolt ons with no tune NO troubleshoot codes. The video and commenters is vaguely describing mods as a whole, but after that 40whp turned into nearly more than double with a tune cycling through after awhile. Tunes do benefit turbo cars a lot though increasing the turbos output to the maximum psi factory limits on stock parts, but may risk the engine depending on the car. I do not even care about loudness so he is pretty much generalizing as i prefer to have it on the low, which is why i was kind of hesitant in changing the headers cause it does increase it ten-fold. However, with the mods i do get faster times and/or better gas mileage depending on how i drive it.
Bjorn, that's not true. There are numerous forums full of people warning that they have actually lost performance after installing a simple performance-oriented cold air intake. The problem with that argument is that the engineers who designed the thing were concerning themselves with a lot of factors many car guys just don't car about. Like being quiet, for example.
@@reaganharder1480 True. The engineers had to design the exhaust system with emissions in mind but where I live has no emission laws so it's okay to remove all this restricting crap.
When you go to free flowing exhaust you may gain top end horsepower, but you lose torque in lower RPM range. Not a concern with a hotrod, but if you really use your truck for working and hauling torque is more important. Also, a builder of performance engines tried changing the valve angles. Found that going from standard 45 degree to 35 degree lost approximately 5% of horsepower, but gained over 10% torque. Torque is what makes vehicles go. More horses at 4000 RPM doesn't do you any good in normal driving unless you're passing some one. If you just want loud install cutouts and go whole hog.
Honestly its only okay to remove your muffler if you tune your car to compensate for more air flow or else like Scotty said it will run worse as there is less fuel than air.
Tuning is incredibly complicated, that’s why a lot of professional tuners specialize in one type of car because it’s so complicated, it’s not like adjusting an old carburetor
Changed my muffler bout 7 months ago. Still no check engine light. Still runs fine. And sounds great. Plus my O2 sensors are before my muffler so its not messing up anything with the computer cause its stock until the muffler
When you said you went to the Indy racing and was partially deaf for a days after I know what you mean. That's what it's like when I watch/listen to one of your videos.
DeadlyBrianX if you know what vortex generators work they may or may not work on your car to work with a spoiler and depending on the downforce generated on your car
I had a 1982 Mercury Lynx that had a huge muffler and a tiny tailpipe that would top out at 89 MPH. I had the muffler taken off and replaced with an ANZA angle cut resonator tip. The sound was great. I put one of those TURBO stick on placards on the hatch lid. Everybody swore it had a turbo with it backfiring and flaming. It would then do 125 MPH with no further mods. I loved that car to death!
I hate it when my mufflers "fall off"! It seemed to happen to every truck I ever owned from age 16 until my late 20's. It always happened about the same time too, right after I got it...weirdest thing Ive ever seen! ;)
I may not be a fan of Honda's but they are far from junk. IMO Honda's are better than Toyota because they last forever but they aren't insanely expensive to repair
According to this guy, engineers design perfect cars and we shouldn't do any mods to them. What he neglects to mention is that engineers are also restricted by governmental restrictive emissions laws and rules that don't allow engines to breathe freely. That's exactly what happened in the mid-seventies when engines suddenly lost hundreds of horsepower for the same size. It's like for a human to go biking with a scuba diving mask on.
I disagree. Even if that were the case, the engineers still designed the system around current stock exhausts. So modifying them doesn't improve much. You're better off putting an entire modified racing engine if you want engineers who are solely after horsepower. Most modern vehicles are designed around fuel economy. It's more like a human going diving in water with a scuba mask on.
Stickers on your car, especially the ones like STP, can mess with your computer and throw off the air/fuel ratio giving you even worse performance than you had before putting that sticker on. Also, stickers are illegal in some states and your car will fail inspection. The engineers that designed your car did not design it to run correctly with stickers.
@@OverlandOne and that's getting scott free, if you have bad luck, those stickers will decrease your hp and even kill the engine. They wear out the valves and the pistons real fast.
I got floor mats for my 2016 forte5, Scotty was not pleased, came up with a reason why that would fry my piston rings at 80k miles and void my warranty :P
Watching this on Sunday, got my car booked in for a custom catback system on Friday, can't wait :D Edit: Love Scotty, but you have to choose what makes YOU happy :D
YES !! One (1) Meter BACK from the pipe tips -- and CENTERED between the pipe exits. 85 Db is the upper limit, but nobody cares -- f**king babies hafta make NOISE !!
I want to either straight pipe or cherry bomb the muffler area but after a call to a shop I had work done at years ago, sadly I was advised against it. He claimed that I would lose performance especially during towing situations. Now I'm frustrated...
I had a 1979 monte carlo with a built 350 and put some old school glass packs from the 70's on it. That thing sounded awesome. One of the best sounding cars I've owned.
My muffler has a hole in it and according to Scotty I shouldn’t change the muffler so I guess my only alternative is to cram his pinhead into the hole and snap it off. Thanks for the advice Scotty.
This may have been true with older vehicles and may be true for some newer vehicles. However, there is plenty of dyno prof that the stock ECU tunes can still compensate and will absolutely make more power with a free flowing exhaust. Will it make more power with a tune? Of course.
Doing some exhaust work on mine too. Factory exhaust is too restrictive for all the other mods I've done lately. Loving the supercharger whine but wanna hear it roar from the back too you know.
New vehicles can easily compensate for the minor difference in backpressure from a different muffler. They're also so far away from the post cat O2 sensor that it won't be a problem. im1ne FYI
Pretty much any car ob2 and ob1 if it’s a cat back the mpg will not change at all or how the car runs it will be just louder I did a cat back in my camaro X pipe No muffler No tune nothing changed
Hell, even older cars can compensate. My 92 miata is fuel injected and I've run it with a bigger diameter catback and even once removed the muffler leaving only the midpipe making it straight piped. In over 5 years I've never run into ANY problems with the engine and countless owners that put on a catback system and nothing else will tell you the same story.
Mr Scotty, the computer programming is called tuning and a lot of the kids on the streets with the Japanese cars tune their cars to run just right and frankly pretty fast and loud
Scotty, you're too old for this. Take a breath while you realise modern ECU's are perfectly able to re-tune themself to new AFR after MINOR mods like catbacks and intakes
Well said. Scotty's ignorance on this topic is obvious, as many modern cars show a decent increase in power with just and intake and exhaust, without an ecu tune. When one actually tunes properly, the gain can be substantial. There is an entire industry based on doing this and have dyno numbers to prove it, not just the rantings of an old man 😉
>Korben Dallas: You do realize that ECU's are programmed to be in compliance with EPA guidelines don't you? It'll retune to stay in compliance, usually resulting in a leaner running engine.
@@TeeroyHammermill yes I know, hence why I said MINOR mods. Some ECU got more latitude than others and I think it's simplistic to say that every mods will harm every car lol.
Korben Dallas can you tell me where scotty said “every mod will harm every car” or any equivalent statement? i heard him say that these mods were bad to do if done improperly and without tuning, but i missed the blanket statements...
@@tiktoktiktoktiktok6065 I changed the muffler on my '06 Tacoma and haven't had any noticable power changes or even a check engine light. Just a nicer sounding truck, which is what I wanted.
Meanwhile, I have a cheap aftermarket muffler on my grocery getter 03 malibu 🤣. Believe it or not it sounds godly and has a nice sound to it. Gives her a nice personality. . [ it's a sfi 3100 v6] .
@1:30... says he didn’t use ear plugs at the race track and couldn’t hear for few days.... is that why he yells and shouts when he makes these videos? 🤔🤔 lol blown ear drums ? Lol
Hey Scotty, great stuff....but not all cars will run poorly, or have the check engine light come on just by replacing the muffler. I replaced the stock mufflers on my mustang gt with magnaflow competition mufflers. The deep tone sounds amazing, and I've driven over 12,000 miles so far with NO check engine light, or rough idle etc. I guess it really depends on the car.
P F I put a flowmaster and K&N filter on my 03 gmc 15 years ago and got an extra 2mpg on the interstate and never had it tuned or have any problems with it. Fuel injection can compensate for something so minor as a muffler or air filter change.
Nothing went off on your car because you just replaced the muffler not the whole system like Scotty is talking about. If you take off your catalytic converters (before the muffler pipe) that will set off the sensor
Logan Gagnier I thought maybe I missed something, so I just watched the video again. Scotty never mentions taking off the cats. He only mentions taking off the mufflers the entire video. Deleting the cats would not only mess with the engine programming, but forget about passing inspection.
The video is great. It is very good to install the exhaust muffler on the car. I bought a pair of this renhotec brand muffler not long ago. After installing it for a while, it is still very good. It is recommended that if you are interested, you can install the muffler.
Older cars I would definitely do this newer cars its best to leave alone unless you do minor things here and there for daily driving I recently got a vibrant street power muffler and just have the axleback pipe didn't mess with my cat or nothing still sounds good I learned my lesson on my wannabee build up car when first getting into the scene 😆 🤣 😂
LANDSPEED he already did like 2-3 of those. “I know some of you are gonna say “but scotty, we see you revving your engines and doing burnouts all the time”...
Adding a Flowmaster Series 50 HD Big Block muffler. And a Bank's intake tube with the high flow filter. I think removed the negative battery cable for a minute. The results were quite than stock by 3db and 3mpg more at 70mph than 65mph. Diesels love more oxygen! And I recently passed the CA emissions testing. The tailpipe is also cleaner looking. The truck climbs the I-5 Grapevine hill 5°f cooler, quieter, and smoother. Not downshifting excessively. Staying below 2500 rpm at 65mph. Stays at 2k rpm at 70 mph. Got 3.92 gears and stock 31.6" diamond tires. Power, Stealth, and Economy! Also the factory had the dealer keep my truck on the internet link with Detroit for about 26 hours to study my truck. The transmission runs even sweeter than before. Runs mountain back roads beautifully. On a trip to Colorado, Wolf Creek Pass and the Eisenhower tunnel were easy! Just pick your parts carefully!
Mufflers are past any o2 sensors..unless it’s a muffler delete(straight) then most likely airflow from the engines exhaust will change since exhaust air won’t have any restrictions and might change readings on the o2 sensor.. other than that a muffler with a different muffler won’t change much..
Yes your right but it's extremely expensive , I have headers on my 350z and it runs better so a month later I decat itand it ran shitty ,I also had muffler delete ,now I put muffler back on with headers runs great
Some people seem to think Scotty is completely against modding which I don't believe is the case I believe he is just trying to inform people that modding cars does have risks and draw backs that not everyone is aware of
Thanks for the great video, I put a gasket on the connection between the muffler and the exhaust pipe for a better sound. It can be said that this part of the exhaust is leaking now, will it damage the car engine in the long run or not?
I love my flowmaster system and have not had a single problem with it. If the engineers made the ECU work as a flex fuel engine then there should be NO PROBLEM with having a free flow exhaust, intake, headers, or anything you would want to put on it.
AlwaysChristian wrong bigtime. Running with Fuel Trims skewed all over the place isn’t “the computer being smart enough to compensate”. If you want your car running right, play it safe, tune for modifications.
Guys I'm not saying that I personally think you need a remapped ECU tune to change your muffler, I'm saying that Scotty wasn't focusing so much on the muffler change itself but on how the ECU handled the muffler change.

@@davidridley51823 yes
Tuning is incredibly complicated, that’s why a lot of professional tuners specialize in one type of car because it’s so complicated, it’s not like adjusting an old carburetor
This guy is that grandpa that tells you to keep your car all stock straight from the dealership 🤦🏻♂️😂
A car is actually worth less when you modify it from original spec.
Sim Doran yeah if you return it to the dealership.
@@simdoran8516 And?
@@simdoran8516 that's not true at all actually havent you heard of 100k supras?

Changed my muffler bout 7 months ago. Still no check engine light. Still runs fine. And sounds great. Plus my O2 sensors are before my muffler so its not messing up anything with the computer cause its stock until the muffler
When you said you went to the Indy racing and was partially deaf for a days after I know what you mean. That's what it's like when I watch/listen to one of your videos.
I like the throaty sound and smoother acceleration in power of my Magnaflow performance exhaust system.

How are they going to hear us rev our engine's with stock mufflers. 🚘🙉
I think watching the tires smoke is more impressive than listening to the engine rev.
Exactly lol I just installed a exhaust system on my mazda 6 and I think it drives more aggressive

Godzukidan 😎😎 I agree
I had a 1982 Mercury Lynx that had a huge muffler and a tiny tailpipe that would top out at 89 MPH. I had the muffler taken off and replaced with an ANZA angle cut resonator tip. The sound was great. I put one of those TURBO stick on placards on the hatch lid. Everybody swore it had a turbo with it backfiring and flaming. It would then do 125 MPH with no further mods. I loved that car to death!

gooz0mbie Why do you think they are garbage?
"I know more than engineers with decades of experience I'm gonna buy aftermarket garbage from China and show them a thing or two" fixed that for ya
Basically dont even put a sticker on your car because he'll have a reason why 😂
Stickers on your car, especially the ones like STP, can mess with your computer and throw off the air/fuel ratio giving you even worse performance than you had before putting that sticker on. Also, stickers are illegal in some states and your car will fail inspection. The engineers that designed your car did not design it to run correctly with stickers.
@@OverlandOne and that's getting scott free, if you have bad luck, those stickers will decrease your hp and even kill the engine. They wear out the valves and the pistons real fast.

Hi Scotty, usually it’s international best practice to measure the DbA at 1 meter from the noice output, not at the tailpipe end! Just for info🤪
YES !! One (1) Meter BACK from the pipe tips -- and CENTERED between the pipe exits.
85 Db is the upper limit, but nobody cares -- f**king babies hafta make NOISE !!
Nothing like a pair of Cherry Bomb mufflers on a V8 engine.
Yup, I had that set up plus headers on my 340 Duster...
Thumbs up!👍🏼
I just added a cherry bomb on my 2014 Silverado and now I'm getting a slight rough idle
this is the most boomer comment I've ever seen
I want to either straight pipe or cherry bomb the muffler area but after a call to a shop I had work done at years ago, sadly I was advised against it. He claimed that I would lose performance especially during towing situations. Now I'm frustrated...
I had a 1979 monte carlo with a built 350 and put some old school glass packs from the 70's on it. That thing sounded awesome. One of the best sounding cars I've owned.

This may have been true with older vehicles and may be true for some newer vehicles. However, there is plenty of dyno prof that the stock ECU tunes can still compensate and will absolutely make more power with a free flowing exhaust. Will it make more power with a tune? Of course.
I cant agree with him, doing a full exhaust and the right tune does have a significant difference
Fat091587 If you watched it fully he says about having it tuned top specific exhaust backpressures but that to many don't put the time into it.
He didn't talk about back pressure, he spoke of flow rates. Internet argument ENGAGE!!!
Doing some exhaust work on mine too. Factory exhaust is too restrictive for all the other mods I've done lately. Loving the supercharger whine but wanna hear it roar from the back too you know.
keyword right tune. most inexperienced people don't tune anything to compensate for the pressure change

New vehicles can easily compensate for the minor difference in backpressure from a different muffler.
They're also so far away from the post cat O2 sensor that it won't be a problem.

Pretty much any car ob2 and ob1 if it’s a cat back the mpg will not change at all or how the car runs it will be just louder
I did a cat back in my camaro

No tune nothing changed
Clous von muffler deletes on a vq engine sound nice 👍🏼
Hell, even older cars can compensate. My 92 miata is fuel injected and I've run it with a bigger diameter catback and even once removed the muffler leaving only the midpipe making it straight piped. In over 5 years I've never run into ANY problems with the engine and countless owners that put on a catback system and nothing else will tell you the same story.

onealmr since he's just got videos of him playing video games, I'm gonna go with no lol

It's 2019 modern computers in modern cars can compensate for what little change if any taking a muffler would do to the car.

P F What year is your car?
2016
So you are telling me to straight pipe my 1997 Toyota Celica?
Maximiliano Huezo just no fart can
No ... nobody wants to hear a lawn mower passing by

This is targeted to the kids who ONLY do it for the sound. Those of us who mod and tune our engines is a requirement.
i only do it for the sound. Car is A-OK
Agreeeddd I am modifying my Nissan Pathfinder lol
All you have to do is tune your car after you muffler delete.
Only if you delete the cat
I am alive
Mufflers are past any o2 sensors..unless it’s a muffler delete(straight) then most likely airflow from the engines exhaust will change since exhaust air won’t have any restrictions and might change readings on the o2 sensor.. other than that a muffler with a different muffler won’t change much..
the rear muffler/s do not affect anything
Yes your right but it's extremely expensive , I have headers on my 350z and it runs better so a month later I decat itand it ran shitty ,I also had muffler delete ,now I put muffler back on with headers runs great

Thats right instead you straight pipe it.
I love it when Scotty takes some chunk o' car and hurls it.
Hey Scott I just put two flowmasters on my 5.7 300c sounds amazing no issues 🤣
I love my flowmaster system and have not had a single problem with it. If the engineers made the ECU work as a flex fuel engine then there should be NO PROBLEM with having a free flow exhaust, intake, headers, or anything you would want to put on it.
Better Title: Why Not to Change Your Car's Muffler with no Tune.
You can drive the car wothout exhaust and it still would be fine
AlwaysChristian wrong bigtime. Running with Fuel Trims skewed all over the place isn’t “the computer being smart enough to compensate”. If you want your car running right, play it safe, tune for modifications.
Webba i have been running de muffled car for 12 years without problem. If you need to play it safe the car just sucks.
Wow you need a tune just to change a muffler, you’re smart aren’t you?
Guys I'm not saying that I personally think you need a remapped ECU tune to change your muffler, I'm saying that Scotty wasn't focusing so much on the muffler change itself but on how the ECU handled the muffler change.
Im convinced Scotty is an old man now and doesn't always know what he's talking about, customizing is awesome Scotty get with the times
