You can change the exhaust without making it louder.
For example install a true dual no crossover exhaust on a V8, and install two separate cats and two separate mufflers.
That way your car didn’t get louder but it sounds much nicer because of the uneven firing V8 shining and showing it’s real character. 👌
I approve as a V8 owner. Most Ford come with true dual with H pipe.
@@austinbishop7430 for sound AND performance, h-pipe is the way to go. 👍
I mean his main concern isn't the sound but more that he claims that it ends up making your car actually run worse, not better.
@@robmen1402 That’s incorrect though.
Really depends on the car.. most newish cars’ ECU can adapt to air flow changes such as a full catback exhaust. Changing out cats though can be a different story
Removing cat usually causes the car to run slightly richer but not much. The rear o2 sensor doesn't really affect it that much.

Pretty much he is saying tune car after exhaust....
That is the perfect advice. Tune your car after any mod that changes engine performance. Even a damn intake. You otherwise wont get any benefit from it, and like he said, it will most likely make the engine run bad. I once installed a 3" intake when stock was 2.75". The check engine light came on with 2 codes. 1 code was about running too rich, the other code was about running to lean. So the tune was pretty much completely screwed up.
Since I did my research, I had the ECU tuning software *before* I even changed the intake, so I was able to calibrate the MAF sensor and adjust the A/F ratio.
Opening the exhaust will decrease engine power loss at the exhaust stroke and sends that lost torque to the crankshaft.
This will not really change how the engine operates just makes it easier for it to work so less power is lost.
99% of modern engines have self-adjusting ECU set to certain parameters mostly based on airflow, it's not until you change the AFR mixtures or timing that you need to tune the engine, not that you can't get any more power out of the engine with a tune however, factories tend to mass produce engines and ECU's, not really tuning them for each individual engine.
Making it easier for the engine to work, like putting on a less restrictive air-intake or less restrictive exhaust does not generally require tuning because engines are tuned on a engine dyno without any air or exhaust restriction.
It all depends on the car, it is true if you want the full benefit of the mod that u will need a tune to go along with it. However, not all cars are universal I was able to get 40whp on full bolt ons with no tune NO troubleshoot codes. The video and commenters is vaguely describing mods as a whole, but after that 40whp turned into nearly more than double with a tune cycling through after awhile. Tunes do benefit turbo cars a lot though increasing the turbos output to the maximum psi factory limits on stock parts, but may risk the engine depending on the car.
I do not even care about loudness so he is pretty much generalizing as i prefer to have it on the low, which is why i was kind of hesitant in changing the headers cause it does increase it ten-fold. However, with the mods i do get faster times and/or better gas mileage depending on how i drive it.
Bjorn, that's not true. There are numerous forums full of people warning that they have actually lost performance after installing a simple performance-oriented cold air intake. They were able to trace the problem back to the engine's air sensors- the wider intake ducts changed the density of and rate at which the air flowed into the engine, throwing off the air/fuel ratio.
Its a rant.
I was thinking of doing it for better sound but now I know there’s a slight power gain; I’m definitely doing it!
The ending where he rings the bell is the best part of any of his videos🤣🤣👌literally perfect, damn minty I tell ya😂😂😂😂

Alejandro Gonzalez what exhaust did you end up going with
Alejandro Gonzalez I got a flow master on mine
I’m with you brother 😂
Alejandro Gonzalez 😂😂😂😂😂
Im going for a greddy chambered muffler. Is that a good obe for bone stock engine?
This may have been true with older vehicles and may be true for some newer vehicles. However, there is plenty of dyno prof that the stock ECU tunes can still compensate and will absolutely make more power with a free flowing exhaust. Will it make more power with a tune? Of course.
If Scotty couldn't talk me out of it,
no one can
Check engine light should not appear as long as the catalac converter isnt messed with

@Camaro SS what about when you need to pass inspection

Bullshit. it comes on if you change the air intake as well
Most ECU figure out the new airflow pretty quick and compensate for it loud pipes save lives

It does save lives, better acceleration response as well to Swerve the haters 😁
@Philip Turner my muffler fell off, I get the funny type of attention which I find funny
@Philip Turner you say that like you were never young
Yes..... actually new exhausts like that give you more horses on higher rpm by taking those horses from lower or the opposite,so scotty is wrong
You can modify whatever you want as long as you have the car tuned to your modifications. I have a Nissan Juke Nismo RS pushing 403 HP at 26psi no check engine lights, runs great, if I drive normally and when I turn down the boost to 16psi for normal driving I still get pretty good gas mileage. It's all about having your car professionally tuned by people that know what they are doing... And as for the sound, I have no catalytic converters I have a nice Magnaflow resonator and Magnaflow dual port exhaust they do a great job of muffling the sound, at idle it doesn't sound any louder then it did before with the Nissan OEM Nismo exhaust system.
I actually just install a flowmaster super 10 on my f150 and it seems to be running better in my opinion with no tune yet

According to this guy, engineers design perfect cars and we shouldn't do any mods to them. What he neglects to mention is that engineers are also restricted by governmental restrictive emissions laws and rules that don't allow engines to breathe freely. That's exactly what happened in the mid-seventies when engines suddenly lost hundreds of horsepower for the same size. It's like for a human to go biking with a scuba diving mask on.
I disagree. Even if that were the case, the engineers still designed the system around current stock exhausts. So modifying them doesn't improve much. You're better off putting an entire modified racing engine if you want engineers who are solely after horsepower. Most modern vehicles are designed around fuel economy. It's more like a human going diving in water with a scuba mask on.
Thank you scotty for informing me how to get pops and bangs out of my car ❤
Scotty just burned ricer kids low key
Sir Brellin this is only for "modern" cars, ricers often don't drive "modern" cars.
Sir Brellin Well someone had to. Ricers with farts cans should be taken off the road permanently.
Sorry but a new exhaust system is a performance mod not a cosmetic enhancement.
2JZ FTW its actually both
Modern cars meaning 90's and newer.
Carburators started disapearing in the 80's
Thanks for the great video, I put a gasket on the connection between the muffler and the exhaust pipe for a better sound. It can be said that this part of the exhaust is leaking now, will it damage the car engine in the long run or not?
The video is great. It is very good to install the exhaust muffler on the car. I bought a pair of this renhotec brand muffler not long ago. After installing it for a while, it is still very good. It is recommended that if you are interested, you can install the muffler.
Older cars I would definitely do this newer cars its best to leave alone unless you do minor things here and there for daily driving I recently got a vibrant street power muffler and just have the axleback pipe didn't mess with my cat or nothing still sounds good I learned my lesson on my wannabee build up car when first getting into the scene 😆 🤣 😂
Paused video to comment before watching. Let me guess.....
Scotty does his thing where he goes "the engineers of the vehicle knew what they were doing"
UPDATE: I was right
Nailed it! 😂👍
The problem with that argument is that the engineers who designed the thing were concerning themselves with a lot of factors many car guys just don't car about. Like being quiet, for example.
@@reaganharder1480 True. The engineers had to design the exhaust system with emissions in mind but where I live has no emission laws so it's okay to remove all this restricting crap.
When you go to free flowing exhaust you may gain top end horsepower, but you lose torque in lower RPM range. Not a concern with a hotrod, but if you really use your truck for working and hauling torque is more important. Also, a builder of performance engines tried changing the valve angles. Found that going from standard 45 degree to 35 degree lost approximately 5% of horsepower, but gained over 10% torque. Torque is what makes vehicles go. More horses at 4000 RPM doesn't do you any good in normal driving unless you're passing some one. If you just want loud install cutouts and go whole hog.
Let me guess, you watched it, and then edited it.....
Yep, I was right

Scotty is absolutely right though. A lot of people put in new intakes and mufflers but they don't get it tuned. You need to tune it!
Derek K i put a flowmaster on my truck 15 years ago and never got it tuned. I did get an extra 2mpg better fuel economy though.
I like the throaty sound and smoother acceleration in power of my Magnaflow performance exhaust system.

I have a 4 cylinder and I put an after market race exhaust but I got one with a canister ontop and it aint too loud and runs good no tune its an expensive exhaust but it was worth it for decent sound and power
I like how he makes tuning your engine sound more complicated than it is
But to normies tuning is basically black magic😂
Real tuning is.
@@davidridley571 noob question, So tuning is the move then changing the exhaust

Honestly its only okay to remove your muffler if you tune your car to compensate for more air flow or else like Scotty said it will run worse as there is less fuel than air.

Godzukidan 😎😎 I agree
C'mon Scotty! You know as well as the rest of us that one of the things people have to do with their cars when modifying the intake or exhaust of their car these days is to retune it with a computer. That makes the A/F ratio correct with the new freer flowing systems. It is standard operating procedure these days. That trumps re-jetting a carb any day. I know - I've had to reject carbs after bolting a set of headers, 360 manifold and a 650 Holley double-pumper on that old 350 chevy engine 45 years ago.
Right, I was going to say that, but you did so I don't have to bother. Most people throw the cold air intake and performance exhaust and don't do a tune. If you don't in most cases I'm sure it will be ok. But it would be the optimal thing to do.
Decades ago, I could changa a muffler to get better fuel economy, preformance and sound.

No I meant changing the muffler was my next plan. My Ricer build is what I told you and it works so well.
Why Honda?
Basically dont even put a sticker on your car because he'll have a reason why 😂
Stickers on your car, especially the ones like STP, can mess with your computer and throw off the air/fuel ratio giving you even worse performance than you had before putting that sticker on. Also, stickers are illegal in some states and your car will fail inspection. The engineers that designed your car did not design it to run correctly with stickers.

i just got a 84 cutlass with horrible sounding dual 2" exhaust with red glasspack bottles and wondering if it would sound better as in more rumbly with one single 3" which will also flow better since one 3" pipe is about 7 sq cm versus 2 x2" =6.28 sq cm?
or can that smaller 2" dual setup scavenge better and keep low end TQ versus a big single which may gain high rpm hp but sacrifice about the same amt of low/mid range TQ
to make the question even harder, im currently running the stock 305 SBC but already bought a used 2003 5.3L LS which will double the stock 305hp [nevermind all the ponies that escaped that 305 barn in last 37 yrs, lol. ]
SO i dont wanna spend any more than neccessary on this dual system if im gonna upgrade to a bigger dual or bigger single exhaust for the LS motor in near future
Scott Kilmer is my long lost father.
Love you dad. Please send money.
LMAO
loool
this video should be shown in schools across the world.. :P
Jack Sadler couldn't agree more
Hell yea why no
here you can see an example of someone who removed the muffler and disliked the video.
How do you feel about Performance Exhaust tips? I k now they will only give nicer look and a Slightly deep noise, But do you think there will mess with stuff?
... well it seems clear that if you do upgrade your exhaust with quality parts you may-will need to properly have your system re-tuned. Thanks, Ed
0:41 what’s he lookin at?
Teleprompter
Yo benson, how's modacai and Rigby? Still bothering ya?
Goose Bee dude😂
Oh boy, is he blind?
Coming soon why not to drive your car
I'm fine with changing the exhaust but make sure that it's not a fartcan.
The OEM muffler on my Ram was HUGE and restrictive, I took it off and put a Flowmaster 10 on, what a difference in sound.. my truck sounds like a truck now
Mr Scotty, the computer programming is called tuning and a lot of the kids on the streets with the Japanese cars tune their cars to run just right and frankly pretty fast and loud
Just say NO to FART CANS!
Here in Panama, we call them Fart Boxes... But I agree with 100%
I love that triumph!!!
HONDA. 👍🏻
i have a 2001 lexus rx300 they said i need a new muffler my engine light comes on should i get one or is it still drivable for now?
Just put straight pipe in love it computer reset after after a few days runs great
Changed mufflers changed air filter
Re jet carb
Runs smoothly no detonation
Perfect!!👍👍👍
Nothing like a pair of Cherry Bomb mufflers on a V8 engine.
Yup, I had that set up plus headers on my 340 Duster...
Thumbs up!👍🏼
I just added a cherry bomb on my 2014 Silverado and now I'm getting a slight rough idle
this is the most boomer comment I've ever seen
I want to either straight pipe or cherry bomb the muffler area but after a call to a shop I had work done at years ago, sadly I was advised against it. He claimed that I would lose performance especially during towing situations. Now I'm frustrated...
I had a 1979 monte carlo with a built 350 and put some old school glass packs from the 70's on it. That thing sounded awesome. One of the best sounding cars I've owned.
Thank you Scotty, changed my mind about switching my exhaust as I don't know too much about tuning and adjusting fuel-air mixture ratios or anything.
I put a Borla axle back on my ND Miata a year ago. Love it.
It's 2019 modern computers in modern cars can compensate for what little change if any taking a muffler would do to the car.
Hi Scotty, usually it’s international best practice to measure the DbA at 1 meter from the noice output, not at the tailpipe end! Just for info🤪
YES !! One (1) Meter BACK from the pipe tips -- and CENTERED between the pipe exits.
85 Db is the upper limit, but nobody cares -- f**king babies hafta make NOISE !!
i replaced my middle and rear stock mufflers with cherry bomb mufflers its on one pipe. does having 2 of them make it louder or should i have just straight pipe the middle and only replace the rear with the cherry bomb muffler? having both sounds pretty sweet though...
I've modified the exhaust on every car I've owned. It doesn't need a tune or any computer work unless you install a high flow cat or headers. Anything cat-back is fine to just install with no problems.
Got an FRS, chopped that muffler off the first day and put on a custom y pipe. nO rAgReTs
niickram not even a single letter?
Did you have a stroke at the end there?
Tune the car... althought it's probably not necessary since the ECU can adjust for like +-10% I think.
Your first mistake was buying an frs
Who modifies a Scion?
