      I agree completely with your explanation why is worthless to put fancy headers on your (gasoline powered) car, BUT a high performance exhaust manifold works well, very well in big Diesel engines.
      Friend of mine gain 70-80 hp and 350-400lb/ft of torque on his Cat C 15 engine, plus his fuel mileage was Improved by 10-15%.So, in some cases and for some engines and applications high performance manifolds are very effective and efficient way to make your life easier (as a truck driver).

      @ryanfrank1309 5 лет назад +74

      @@Chriskelly19067 If you're building your cars engine and it has efi you'll need a tune regardless. You can either wrap your headers or heat shield everything around them for relatively low cost. So this video only applies to a small, small portion of people that don't do proper research before hand. Headers on a stock engine are only rational in you're slowly building your car and want to build the engine later down the line. If you even know what long tube headers are, chances are you're not completely naive when it comes to building an engine. And if you're building your engine it would be absolutely ludicrous to put your factory manifolds and exhaust system back on.

    • @FineW_TurboM111
      @FineW_TurboM111 5 лет назад +18

      Ryan Frank the only thing headers do is to help extracting exhausts from the cylinder and helps in decreasing workload to remove them. After the headers has helped remove the exhaust gases you have more cylinder space for more clean air, and some vacuum to help get that air in there. What is needed then is slight bit more fuel and some timing settings that the ECU in most cases can handle, not perfectly but it can. If you want to get the most out of headers, install better cams and tune the car for optimal horsepower during certain loads, with this you can gain som mpg if the timing is set right and you are running high octane fuel.

      @HexagramMan,
      All aftermarket header manufacturers use dynometer data to market their exhaust products. Many products are compared by independent test facillities as well. Thus, the information is easily available to anyone willing to look at it. Exhaust scavaging is a complex matter that most do not fully comprehend. However, one thing is certain; if a vehicle owner installs a quality namebrand exhaust header that has been designed specifically for their vehicle, and for the RPM range intended, an increase in power output will be realized.
      That said, it should also be noted that the remaining factory components will then pose a "restriction" to the potential benefits that are offered by exhaust upgrades. Thus, the normal course of vehicle modification for the average car enthusiast, is to upgrade system components in stages; as time and budget factors permit.
      However, to make the broad and erroneous assertion that an exhaust header offers zero performance benefits, without additional component modifications is simply inaccurate.
      It would be better stated:
      "Relatively small power gains will be realized by modifying individual, isolated components. Whereas, multiple system mods that compliment the flow characteristics of the complete system is the key to obtaining the most gains from ones' vehicle."
      I think what you meant to say is:
      "To install a header alone may provide a meager 5% increase. However, to expect that increase to be 20 or 30% is stupid."

    Modern cars already have a header design from the factory. A lot of times made from cast iron. The old log type exhaust manifolds were quite restrictive but cheap to manufacture. Scotty’s wrong about headers only being effective for high end power. There are small diameter tube headers as well as pipe length choices to the collector to improve low and mid range performance. Also, the ecm can compensate in most cases when an aftermarket header is put on that only changes the flow characteristics on a minor level. Heat can be suppressed by wrapping headers with heat tape or using a ceramic coated header. For performance, it’s better anyway. A header is more effective if you keep the heat inside. Using the right header and exhaust is one of the cheapest performance mods that can yield the biggest gains without tearing into the engine. This is assuming the factory exhaust is restrictive.

    I've done extensive flow-bench tests on heads with headers attached and have used that data to match each tube to each port for the best flow throughout the valve travel. It amazes me how much can be gained and where you can get it. Now, yes, he is correct about reprogramming the fuel and timing map to match the new exhaust flow, but not completely. A lot can be gained with small tweaks without a re-map, a lot can be gained in terms of low to midrange torque by redesigning your exhaust without sacrificing anything, a lot can be gained by feeding them cooler air, and guess what? Most newer performance engines come with factory stainless headers and cold air intakes as-is. To be more in depth, modern ecm's are entirely self tuning to a point. If you don't freak them out by doing too much, they will correct themselves up to a certain point. Scotty, I appreciate your knowledge and experience, and enjoy watching. The ECU's learning tables should be able to cope with a 10% change in airflow, just need to give it time to re-learn trim tables after the modifications. That's the same reason why modern engines that spring a new air leak run poorly for a short while, then run "normally" once the ECU catches up with the leak, run poorly again when the worsening leak(s) exceed the ECU's adjustment range and still run poorly after the leaks are fixed until the ECU is reset or is given enough time to re-learn its post-fix trims.

    • @RWoody1995
      @RWoody1995 6 лет назад +8

      The thing is, all the parameters the ECU can adjust to compensate for these things each have limits to how far up and down they can adjust. So sure while it might compensate now, when the engine gets a bit older or even other things like fluctuations in fuel quality, oil quality, air quality it will end up also having to compensate for them but if its already maxed out or nearly maxed out a setting to compensate for the change in airflow it's got no room to compensate for those other things.

      Like he said....back in the 50, 60,70's and 1980... yes - headers were a good thing. If you have an early muscle car - it might be a good thing to do, still!
      But remember, most of those old engines were N/A - naturally aspirated, If you have a car with turbos or super chargers...the real horsepower comes from install a bigger power adder, now if you need headers to install the bigger turbo ... then why pay for the hears twice?
      Listen to what Scotty said...headers - by themself - are wasted money on the "newer cars" ... meaning anything made after 1990'somethings - to 2000's... until you change some other "expensive" parts and upgrade the ECU...computers and change the program tune to match.
      Note: the Internet was only getting started since 1995. There was not such thing as You tube. If you wanted to know "stuff" you had to read a book. If you could find one that was worth reading.
      Fuel injection was still mechanical, there were no MAF, MAP no open source computer controls and no one was making the bigger injectors, fuel pumps or knew how to design return style fuel systems ... that came later, much later...much, much, later!
      However, the old Foxbody mustangs were the beginning of factory installed tubular headers, which they put on the early 5.0 overhead valve engines. They were not full length headers - but they were tubular headers. The Japanese, and other smaller engines started putting them on their 4-cylinder cars - because they are cheaper to make. There ain't much "cheap" horsepower in newer car engines any more. Last I heard - figure about $35 - $40 (with newer cars, maybe even $80, $90 or $100) per horsepower is what it'll cost to hop up/modify newer engines. If you need someone else to install the parts "for you"...then figure shop time will start at $60 - $100+ per hour... based on where you live and what you need installed. If its dealer installed...bring your own grease... 'cause it'll be even more painful!
      Newer engines don't leave a lot of "cheap" horsepower on the table any more. The best you can expect (from a 4-cylinder engine) is maybe an extra 5 or 10 horsepower, by changing headers, removing the cats and putting on a $500 - $1000 exhaust system. Now you can make a hella' lot more noise - but no mater what "they say", more noise is not equal to a bunch more horsepower... at least - not until you change other things too.

Not to mention all the hassle you have to go through with re-tightening the flange and collector bolts constantly, putting fiberglass sleeves on your plug wires, and even having to run those stupid expensive short plugs which I find really aren’t much shorter than normal plugs. Will start with modern fuel injected cars have a computer that has AFR learning by to match a predetermined AFR table programmed into the ECM. It learns this by reading the sensors from the MAF/MAP, knock, Engine Speed Sensor, and AFR sensor. It then adjust fueling for the extra air flow due to the extra exhaust flow. The beauty of the modern ECM.
      Second. Headers and exhaust are a supporting mod that are normally done first because they don't require a tune, but best performance would be seen by one.

    4 tuning by computer is infinitely easier than guessing which fuel jet to install in a carburetor.
    5 exhaust manifolds are restrictive on purpose so engine temperatures will climb faster because cold engines put off more raw fuel and carbon emissions.
    6 less restrictive headers don’t run as hot if you use the right thermostat, and offer better fuel economy than stock manifolds.

      About the rich sound, hell yeah! Open headers on an old 60° Ford V4 (They used them in a few Saabs) is a sound you'll not forget. Much less any V8 in existence sounds like the apocalypse when properly tuned with a nice performance exhaust, bigger injectors, and forced induction!

    Thats the thing. Its a supportive modification. Alone it doesn't do much. Put put that with an entire exhaust set up, and an intake setup and tune it correctly. You will see gains in power. And no, most manifolds now a days are not made to flow better, they have to keep in mind manufacturing costs, noise levels, and many other factors. Exhaust flow is not their main concern.
