Very true. U see the world entirely different. I was always a popular friendly guy. To come to the realization u have nobody to count on, u then know what it is to be alone. People would rather tear u down as a group than stand beside u
@@Bone89 you hung around a bunch of dickheads then. I had a lot of friends growing up and they would all stand beside me. I have seen it happen multiple times.
I love the smell of brilliant acting in the morning. I remember watching this in the movies with my gf and I got seriously choked up in this scene. Super underrated movie.
I too watched it when it was in the theater. I remember right before it started some random guy ran into the theater and looked up at everyone, at once the entire theater looked at him sd he yelled, "he dies at the end". My gf was angry, I laughed so hard.
“Every Woman has her chairs...” It is a mighty fine gift to be blessed with a man who consistently buys his woman’s chairs. She is revered, and honored by her husband, and envied by others. And this is a gift which may truly be claimed by anyone willing to genuinely do so. Thank you.
For me it’s about a man transitioning in life. No one understands or has the guts to talk to him so their gossip, groupthink , amateur psychology is tearing him down. One man had the guts to defend him
Scene still brings me to tears. Awesome movie. It absolutely caught me off guard. I saw it in the theater and had to leave with my face covered from crying so much. I cried all the way home.
Duvall is a b actor in my opinion. He plays old people, think about it. Rarely stars as a lead role in anything worth watching. Good actor not incredible.
No question it's about being where the truth is the saying goes as you see who truly is your friend during tough times. Robert Duvall as the Doctor showed his true Allegiance to George played by JT
Simply my favorite performance by the great Robert Duvall. Phenomenon is a "PHENOMENON" of a movie. Made even greater by this actor "Par Excellence." "Every woman has her chairs. Something she needs to put herself into, Baines." One of the great lines in Cinematic History delivered to perfection. Yet, as great as Duvall is in this film, John Travolta does him one better. Phenomenon is Travolta's "Magnum Opus." How in Heaven's name he didn't walk away with the Academy Award by acclimation simply astonishes me. His performance is heart rendering and filled with effortless charm. As he speaks to the two children and tells them he is going to die, they begin to cry. "Everything is on its way to somewhere," he tells them. Even telling them that by talking a bite from an Apple it becomes a part of us forever. GEORGE MALLEY IS EVEN AT PEACE WITH THE CAUSE OF HIS DEATH. Saying to the disease mongering Doctor that it's better that the illness was a Cancer because "AT LEAST IT CAME FROM INSIDE ME." Duvalls second classic line, "No wonder you guys wear masks," strikes at the heart of a man only interested in exploiting anothers misfortune. At the center of this beautiful film, John Travolta and Kyra Sedgwick simply own the screen as the Star Crossed lovers. Phenomenon steals your heart and makes you smile. Even in its moments of deepest sadness . Travolta is so brilliant that it is not only his best performance. I would place it in my top ten greatest acting performances of all time. Phenomenon is one of the most appropriately named films ever created. Further glorified by an acting gem, rarely if ever seen before. .
It’s funny when people born with gifts or have something that makes them different, their will always be others that’ll ridicule you for it. Make you feel less for it, if you’re smart they may appreciate you to your face, but behind you theyll think you’re a smart ass blow hard. I don’t think I can ever understand why people do that, why ridicule the gifted and different, if they weren’t hurting anybody why the hell should you care.
Be nice to people who are different from you. Thats all i have to say about it. These people are different so that they wouldnt make the same mistakes as you did.
I always loved this scene, and the movie in general for that matter, because of how true it is. It doesn't apply to just women though but the crux of any relationship is being supportive of each other. You might think your SO interests are silly or stupid but as long as they aren't causing something bad such as financial ruin, you should just let them do it if it makes them happy.
One of the most brilliant scenes. I love Duvall. I love his strength and the point he got to. It shows the lack of the other 3 morons that didn't get the point.
Jbx1967 you always bought all my chairs and even put some of them bad boys on freaking reserve before they were even made into chairs! This is why I the luckiest person alive. ❤️🥰❤️
It’s funny no modern movie has made me feel the way the 80’s and 90’s can make you feel. With CGI and stuff I’d like to see a modern Neverending Story. 🤙
I always loved this scene. The three stooges basically reflects the condition of the ignorance of society and the unwillingness to change. Doc is the wake up call. We are on the brink of extinction and need an event to wake us up from our unsustainable and destructive ways. Hedonism at the expense of the Earth must stop!
Even though it's a scene in the wrong place However, it carries strong meanings and sincere emotion - Who defends the devoted absent person - where someone does the good and there are those who try to destroy him only And just only so they can feel better about themselves . While he does not want anything from anyone: From 01:35 9 specially 01:44
He was a good Dr like mine he wrote to the psychiatrist that the treatments were giving me side effects they were discontinued. My Doctor now has retired I've been discharged completely from mental health services since 2017 I thank the Dr so much and he wasn't just a Dr but a good friend one of the best

Dude the best comment on a particular scene I was looking for🎉
Watched it at a theater in my hometown decades ago. This scene is the only part I remember. Still gives me chills. Great acting by Duvall.
I saw it in theaters with my obnoxious friend at age 14 and while he did not get much from it I remember being moved to tears.

i bought her maybe 20 different chairs over 40 years but she still asked me to leave
This is an incredible scene I still remember years later, and make points with. This is about love.

"Nothing, nothing." Goddamn, that is so good.

So much wisdom in this scene
Robert Duvall is always great. This was one of his best roles along with The Apostle.
Takes my breath away no matter how many times I see it! in fact I think it gets stronger over time
Dam finally a Doctor that sticks up for his clients.

Me too. I saw it in theaters with a goofball friend of mine in middle school and had no idea what I was in for.
Such a powerful scene
I play this over and over and love it more! Amazing acting!
Amazing scene and very few are fortunate to have someone in their life who will defend them like this.
Still one of my favorite moments from one of my favorite movies.
George never lost his friends. He had few of them to begin with.
Doc and Nate you could always see were the real ones, and of course Lace over time.
An unbelievably well written scene and incredible acting by Duvall.
Doc was right, George didn't change. The townspeople did.
