- This is the 1st episode for Double First - this is a hour long edition which developed into a 6 part sitcom written by John Esmonde and Bob Larby. Mostly forgotton as part of their writing credits
Yes this does seem more like a bittersweet drama with humorous bits like a sitcom.
Such a shame there’s no more of this series.
Thank you, this is lovely 😊
What a delight to see Michael Williams playing on the piano the motif to 'Bring in the Clowns' . . . his wife Judi Dench had made the song famous when she played in Sondheim's stage musical in London and sang that very song.
What a complete delight!
What a wonderful show. Thank you
What a lovely programme! I wasn't aware of the series before I discovered it at YT.
It's more of a witty drama (than a 'sitcom' or even a 'comedy drama'). So the episode wasn't what I expected when I first started watching it. But in the end it was a far better viewing experience than I could have hoped for! Michael Williams is perfect in the lead role. And the other characters work so well with him. And it is so cleverly written. A true credit to the classic writers Esmonde & Larbey.
Now I would love to find out what happens to the story & the characters after this 1st episode!! 🙂
Thanks for the upload. 👍
This is very good such a shame that there is no more 😭
Double First forgotton sitcom 1st episode 1980s Michael WIliams 0446AM 27.3.22 I ENDED UP HERE AFTR BEING AWOKEN BY A PROWLER AND THEN TRYING TO REPLY TO A FINE ROMANCE EPISODE WHICH NO BODY BUT ME WATCHED, ANYWAY... which is all very odd but in keeping with the overall insanity of this place. which may make for a decent absurdist sit-com. but i feel it's already been done with the young ones which is nothing akin to this kindda caper. imagine being an eagle-panther and ending up as a short order fry cook!!! p.s what are we getting from this? we are getting a couple of old gals who have had it drummed into their heads that they went to school with this fine chap when they patently did not and...not all goes to plan.
THANKS, loved this when first on. shame only one episode but better than nothing
Thank you for this - i loved this when it was aired and have been looking on here for years to see if anyone had put it on
Double First forgotton sitcom 1st episode 1980s Michael WIliams 0503am 27.3.22 she brow beats him into taking up residence then calls him a ponce!
Bob Larby also wrote A Fine Romance.
More of these please! Pretty please. With brass knobs on!
I never forgot watching most of the “Double First” episodes as a teenage lad. I loved everything about them, especially the three lead actresses! It’s so great to watch this first episode again. I would love an opportunity to see the entire series.
@@david7322 Loved this show, 3 very fine ladies indeed!

Double First forgotton sitcom 1st episode 1980s Michael WIliams 0456am 27.3.22 wow 1 quid 95 pence for fish and chips and then it would probably have been 50 pence cheaper out in the wilds of lancashire..
Isn't/wasn't NV Standish married to Dame Judy Dench?
Yes he was
@@P17RVV I wish someone would post up the rest of NV Standish's story! It's a bit frustrating getting part 1 and then nothing!!

Double First forgotton sitcom 1st episode 1980s Michael WIliams 0459am 27.3.22 are the oo-errr jokes meant to stand proud in this show...? it's coming (oooo-errr) across as a vile mac of a man shacking up to get at the young daughter, if you ask me... i mean; i dont do ooo-err so getting into that kindda mind set may cause all manner of dubious ad hoc situations... it's kindda hard (ooooo-errrr) to fathom what makes that kindda mind-set tick...

He was great as radio Watson but miscast as a handsome genius captain of the cricket tea etc
What a jerk N.V. is for sponging on them.
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !"
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"

@@brianmorrison9168 ARE YOU THE COMMENT POLICE ? YOU FUCK WIT !
@@brianmorrison9168 ANYONE FOR TRIFLE ?
THE DUCK'S OFF !
This is all very realistic if one lets a setback dictate who they become😢
Holly Aird and Peter Tuddenham? Why is this not a boxed set? Jennifer Hilary and Ann Bell? Clive Merrison?
Okay. I confess. Jew-ish. Stand-ish?
I wouldn't call this a sitcom, haven't found anything funny so far.
Grant you there isn't a laughter track. More a "comedy of manners".
