- In this video, I show you how to use the simple but effective technique of Cold Water Lime Pasteurization to grow mushrooms on straw. The process is pretty simple, basically just soak straw in a water bath of hydrated lime for 12-24 hours, drain, inoculate, colonize and fruit!

Put your straw in onion bags to make it easier to handle while soaking. Great video.
that's a good idea, easier to remove from the soak after!
I got a 15 pack of 5 gallon paint strainers which I have used multiple times. I fill them 3/4 full then tie off with a rubber band drop into a less than half full 20 gallon waste can with my lime mix.(I put 2 grams per litre of hard water)put a cement block on and soak for 16 to 20 hrs
Do you get much contamination?
@@chrissullivan5137 I've been using cold water lime pasteurization for 4 plus mths now and still have zero contamination!
@@metlwrker4285 thanks so much for answering. May I have your recipe?
I like the fact that the methods your suggesting are in this case very simple and possible for some one even with out lots of equipment to set up or at least possible on a budget
Tony, you're an excellent communicator. Gratitude for your helpful videos!
Man, I can't tell how helpful your videos are, thanks a lot, God bless you, you're my hero Haha
Greetings from Brazil!
Great job. Gearing up for another grow season here in Sydney and your videos are really helpful!
Compared to all the other grower channels, you make it look so easy! I love it!
Awesome! I guess it can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be :)
I agree with this and its more cheaper than the usual making process :)
@@FreshCapMushrooms question man, you took the logs to a bright place in the end, is it? I thought it has to be always in a dark room..
@@semi5alpha some mushrooms, especially oysters, need a bit of sunlight to trigger fruiting. This is due to their position on the forest floor and using leaf drop (and therefore more sunlight) as an indicator of ideal fruiting time.
@@semi5alpha mushrooms don't go through photosynthesis like plants, but they ARE photoreactive! Although you CAN fruit any type of mushroom COMPLETELY in the dark, you will have odd shaped and colored fruiting bodies, as light helps them form in the familiar ways we know and love!
You put a lot of production value into your videos and it shows man. I watched about 4 of these before I figured I should subscribe. Very cool! :)
Thats it, I bingewatched most of your videos, but this one knocked it out of the ballpark. I'm growing Oysters now.
Awesome video Tony. Am going to use this method. This simple procedure is very much what I want to stick with for cultivating mushrooms!
Amazing information! Love how you show your process and not just the tek involved. Clear and to the point. Great work!!!
Awesome! Glad you like it! Thanks for watching-
Isn't process and technique the same thing?
Interesting method 🤔☺️ definitely gonna have to try this at some point! Keep up the great videos!
Video suggestion; how to make a spore print/spore seringe and how to properly store them.
Great. I was looking out for videos with Lime pasteurisation and I got this. Now I am clear to use dehydrated lime.
is this really healthy to eat?
Tony your the man! ✊🏼 Love your vids
Thank you. Awesome video and well explained Tony :)
I enjoy watching your videos . Keep up the good work .
Sumptuously!!! You are a magician !!!
Hey Tony, thanks for making this video. & sharing the technique for cold pasteurization. Can’t wait to try it on a small scale. I have a couple quarts of pink oyster grain spawn to fruit using this method.
Awesome to hear! Happy growing (pinks are great!)
Fantastic ideas ! That will be much easier than steam ! Thank You
very informative and helpful. thanks for the video.
Great instruction and easy method , i am definitely going to do this as i was discouraged by the boiling method before
Does it works for you?Give me update please enlighten me
He is a really cool dude and keep everything simple. Thank you!
Very nice sir ,very helpful video for new mushroom growers . Thanks
Great instruction, thank you! I'm gearing up to try this method. I wonder what mil thickness of poly tubing you use?
Great videos, I agree 100%. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! From South Africa :o)
The hunting tip arrow is a nice touch. Really effective too, id think
So good! Cant wait to try. Thx is 👍
Tony is the man!
I freaking love watching your videos
Thank you Tony.
You are awesome dude!
Thanks, Tony! Your videos are fantastic. I've watched how you grow mushrooms on mushroom beds outside without pasteurising the straws. Do you recommend pasteurising the straws before inoculating them to grow mushrooms outside? Would that make it less hard for other things outside to grow in the mushroom bed or will pasteurising makes no difference when growing outside?
Nice,thanks for make this video.
Could you do a video on on that outdoor fruiting chamber? I've been toying around with a similar design, and I like what you came up with. Can you enclose that wooden frame in plastic sheeting?
Great informative channel, thank you for everything Tony. Any advice on building or sourcing a laminar flow hood on a budget?
Thanks!! Honestly, you can definitely build one, but after all is said and done, you might be better off just buying a pre made one....
thanks for such as nice video all the best
A heartfelt thank you for sharing this info with us !
Tony, do you know if this method can be done using wood ash to create a high PH lye solution ?
Hi Tony
Nice watching your channel😍 God bless♥️
So I have been reading a lot of your articles, great articles by the way. Using the straw substrate, how well do you tot would work with the bottle method of growing mushrooms? Also in comparison to fully sterilizing the straw, and lime pasteurization, is it that much more successful?
Great video..the start to finish videos are always the best...this seems way easier than boiling.....I'm going to buy a new barrel today. I have had success will small scale hydrogen peroxide pasteurization before but I think I'm really going to like the lime method.
Awesome! Thanks so much for the comment. Yes, this method really is fantastic. You can re-use the lime water as well (add more straw for another soak), or even measure it out so you have just enough water to pasteurize the lime, with almost none left over. I can't believe how good it works!
How much hydrogen peroxide is to be used per kg of dry straw?
Great instruction sir! What kind of yields are you getting with this method?
Great video Tony! Where do you get the poly tubes to make the logs?
Hi Tony. Loving al your videos. I'm new to growing mushrooms. We have high magnesium levels in our water, will that be a problem to cultivate mushrooms?
Hey Tony, have you ever tried wood ash pasteurization for straw? Please make a video on that too
For draining our limed straw we took a plastic garbage can and drilled holes in the bottom. We then forked it in there when done to drain and placed a heavy weight on it overnight. it was fine the next morning to load into the growing containers. You can use the garbage can for regular use by just using a bag in it.
Using a broadhead is genius 👌 👏 🙌
Hi Tony, big fan of your show. I bought everything I need to grow mushrooms at home but I cant find the grow bag. Do you have any recommendation as to where to get the bags? and what is the size of the bag you are using? thank you so much for the inspiration to grow mushrooms at home.
You technique for growing oyster mushroom its look so easy to do.. thanks for sharing. and question pls! here where i live straw is not available and only hay or dry grass that use to feeds animals is only available at agricultural supply is this will works the same as straw? thanks! in advace.
Love your videos and your positivity! I did this method and have oysters that have been in a dark cool room for about 3 weeks but have not started pinning yet. Should I bring them outside or just wait to see what happens?
S Campos they need light to pin
Glad I saw this.
Great video as usual, BUT please tell us more about your mini makeshift greenhouse you had them in !!!!! What RH% you aiming for ? Are the sides open for more airflow.
The man, the legend, tony..
I love your hole poker, I bet does wonders on deers😉
Very useful video,,, ❤
Hey! Any Idea if this works on hardwood sawdust?
Thanks for all the info you share!
Tony, another great video. I'm in the process of trying this pasteurization process out but with 3.5 gallon buckets...will let you know how it goes. One question: is the water and lime mixture a one use thing or could you pasteurize multiple batches of straw by possibly adding a bit more water and lime...basically trying to see if there is a way to save water. Thx
Hi Freshcap, thanks for the video, just wondering, what is the best humidity rate for the substrate once you put it in the bag?
Hi , nice video , can we use the same method to pasteurized wheat to get started growing Mushroom at home ? Thanks
did you check the PH level of the substrate after draining it? if yes, what was the PH? Thanks
is it acceptable to use this cold water lime pasteurization with wood chips as well?
love the vids, thanks!
I like how you set them up outside but that would be destroyed in a day in Saskatchewan. We rarely get a day without wind, and usually it's more than enough to blow that plastic away or shred it. Our tarp shed is done after just 2 winters.
Thanks for the great video, I have access to lots of fresh cut green hardwood sawdust , do I need to dry it out or compost it before pasteurizing it?
The drier, the less probable it is for wood's own defense against mushrooms and such is still active. Hardwood, green grass, whatever is used. I believe there is another reason, also, so...all growers I have read say 1-year old substrate. I am hoping that the lime will take of this, though, since I have no way to know how old mine is
GL to all!
Going how's it going my friend, I enjoy watching your videos on growing mushrooms but I have a question if I may, where can I buy the spawn seeds like you showing your videos that you mix in with the hay or Rye or any of the other ones that you use different mushrooms with oh, but I want to get a few different strands of mushrooms to grow so that I can enjoy different ones like the blue oyster yellow oyster the king oyster the shiitake mushrooms as well as button tops and different varieties of those as well.?
Hi Tony, thanks for all the videos, really inspiring.
Do you think this method would work if trying to grow shitake mushrooms, in bags, with a softwood woodchip substrate?
Did you ever find an answer to your question because I really want to know the same thing and it seems no one has tried it that I have talked to?
Hi, thank you for sharing detailed info. Good job. Can i ask where did you get that "Spear with crossed blades" to cut bag. I can't find anything similiar online. Thank you. Greetings from Slovenia.
How do you go about deposing of the water after? Does the ph drop after having the straw in the solution for time period?
I can’t imagine draining high alkaline liquid is good? Is there a way to bring the ph back towards neutral?
4:07 soooo satisfying
Hey there Tony, Fantastic video! I'm coming up blank trying to find Hydrated Builders Lime non dolomite w
Thanks
Could you use this method with smaller bags for an indoor grow to make a sort of DIY grow your own box? Really trying to avoid buying a pressure cooker to sterilize fruiting blocks.
nice video man, hey what are the parameters of magnesium content being low or high? As in what number would be considered high please?
Can do more than one cicle? with the water+Ca(oh)2 solution? or I necessary need to discart water with 300g of Ca(OH)2 every time?
I like this method, but reuse will be usefull, do you tried?
Thanks!
Tony, could hydrated lime be added to fuel pellets & bran to skip using the pc?
I will be getting 3 spore blocks Monday..Turkey tail, Lions Mane and Pearl Oyster
I plan to set up a 40 gallon aquarium to grow them in by the south wall of my kitchen floor. Can I grow all of them together in one aquarium? Or would 3 separate Rubbermaid tubs be better?
Great video Toni, thank for sharing. Are you now selling spawn in Canada? Would love to buy some.
Thanks tatenda! Not yet, but soon I hope.
Hey Tony. What was the dry straw quantity you pasteurised. Greetings from India. God bless you.
Hi bro, have you used fermented substrate method? It's also work preety good to me
Hey Tony, think we could get a diagram on instructions on your fruiting ladder?
Thank you brother
It helps me altot and I can understand very easily
Jai Hind 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
I actually add magnesium into my spawn. Just following some of the research from university.
Hey so when you go to fruit and you put the bags in that trellis you built did you enclose it on all sides or just the back side? And what temp was it when you did this please. Thank you
Hi Tony. In the beginning i put a kilo of lime on 200 liter drums but covering slowly then i lowered and put 3/4 kilo lime but that time lower lime bags covered green mold. Do you have any advice about green mold?
Hi Tony first of all thank you so much for all the information shared. You are helping us a lot here in south Brazil.
Just one question... Is it possible to reuse that water after adding the hidratated lime? We d love to save water as much as possivel. What do you think? Hugs!
Andrea
I know I'm a year late but, if the ph of the water stays relatively high then it will continue to kill bacteria and that's the whole point of the alkaline water.
Watching ur vlogs..
Hi Tony, Is it safe to dispose the high pH solution in the drain? Or can you reuse the solution? If yes, how many times you can reuse? Or how do you dispose the solution? Sorry if this question was asked and answered. Just didnt have time to search it. Thanks in advance.
the graphics on this video is great, what video card you use
What do you do with all the hydrated lime water after? Idk if some of it can be used for gardens? If so, probably only so much. Then what with the rest?
Doing this in barrels each week… need info on what to do with this high ph water
Hi tony
Can i reuse the straws or substrate after fruiting ?
After washing and pasteurization
Awesome!
Thanks!
Eh are you adding additional gypsum to your substrate or does the lime cover that, mineral wise?
Does the same process work for wood chips or other pasteurized substrates?
Could we use the same lime method for casing soil sterilization ?
You should do a test with crude oil. Supposedly Crude Oil is a super food for Oyster Mushrooms as Oyster Mushrooms can break down petroleum products such as plastic and convert it into usable waste / compost.
wouldnt eat
Can this method be also used for saw dust substrate?
sir how many or what is the weight of straw did u put it your drum? thank you. sir do you have a video easy and fast to make oyster mushroom spawn. thank you sir
Hi Tony. Have you had much success with straw and lime for King Oysters?
Nice, as in Hydrated lime same as builders lime for mortar? and do you check your PH after?
Tony -- whats your recommendation on triggering a second flush in these logs? Do you just wait or do any dunking, etc?
Awesome!
So with the measurements it's metric and imperial but would equate to 300g lime to 208 litres? (15g to 10.4 L) assuming US gallon not UK
If it's just a matter of driving the pH up then ashes should work just as well. If you have access to free fresh wood chips or shavings from a mill you can burn a batch for the ash needed to sterilize the rest. Magnesium shouldn't be an issue there since it would otherwise be present in the wood as well, though I guess it could concentrate it some. Seems like it's worth an experiment. I was considering burning shavings to heat water to sterilize the batch, but if I can skip heating the water then that's all the better.
Thank,s
