🚨UPDATE 22/02: Police in Kenya have been ordered to open an investigation over allegations of sexual abuse, made in a BBC documentary, at tea plantations which supply some of the biggest British brands. 📖 bbc.in/3XV355e
I bet you, nothing will be done!! the country's leadership runs on sexism, non performing good looking young women get appointments at the expense of professionals. Impunity runs Kenya. Former Migori governor Obado has been accused of Murder and rape and still enjoys close relations with the president, ( possible candidate for civil service appointment), Kiambu governor was accused of raping, impregnating his teenager househelp and refusing to provide adequate help for the child, current agriculture minister has open rape cases. There have been numerous cases among the police raping and even killing women in jail cells.
Hi Lynn, you can imagine how expoited woman are to get jobs in Kenya. I heard even in Nairobi industrial area is the same. Sad that this managers have made sexual advances as a job qualification skill. So pathetic!
Lemme just congratulate the lady who is undercover. Having to endure all that hard labour and harassment even when she didn't have to, just to ensure the sexual predators are uncovered. Shame on them. Good work Catie. Your sacrifice is so appreciated. God bless the good work in BBC.
@@maureenmiriti3199 I don't think it got to that point but they put many advances towards her and made her do hard labour because she didn't conform to what they wanted.
As a Kenyan, the fact that it took BBC, and not a local media house, to uncover this is as insulting as it is disappointing. These sex pests should spend the rest of their lives behind bars.
It is also disappointing that it has been given almost zero exposure in the UK. This should be shown prime time on BBC, instead they show Strictly Come Dancing.
The pain of being infected with HIV and being sexually compelled is so deep that some of those victims cant heal. Some people are so cruel but as long as there are bad people also there are good hearted people ,that is what give me hope.
These men need to be arrested not just for harassing these women, but for deliberately and knowingly infecting these women with HIV. THIS IS DIGUSTING!!!!.
@@la-ry1ms may you never see the fruit of your labor and may your days be filled with constant tears and suffering. Why should the women be punished? What did they do?
Kuna mtu amelazimishwa hapo, kubakwa ama.Women started this culture for favours coz majority have nothing to support their job applications and some in jobs sleep around to be favoured by the bosses
This disgusts me. The fact that NO ONE in that company is willing to stop this abuse instead putting it on the VICTIM to stop it!! Unbelievable! All of the leads and managers need to be fired!!! Kate you are so brave. You are an amazing woman.
This makes me sick to my stomach. Now where is the feminism movement? The feminism movement here in USA is more focused on emasculated men, and turn little boy to girlie boy. While there're women suffering around the world.
John Chebochok one of the sexual predators captured in this documentary preying on women looking for employment just won the Seat for Director, Ainamoi Zone. My heart is heavy, really heavy.
I lost 2 aunties to HIV transmitted by these kind of boses. The kind of pain their kids had to go through because of it is disgusting. It affects generations.
Journalist in Africa should voice aloud to awake their government to add more regulations on family sexual courses, social sexual life images, polices, and educational system.
Exactly! BIGGEST tea companies in the world and you're telling me they're this disconnected to the plight of women serving their supply chain? Gross. Lipton surely had & has the resources be on this issue.
It’s sad that we have to sleep with people who are supposed to give us jobs in order to get one. Sexual harassment is not only in the tea factories but everywhere, hotel industries, schools and many other places. Something needs to be done
I had a friend in Highschool who lived in these highlands. One day when going back home I looked at the field through my bus window and I told her it’s so beautiful she then answered me ‘’you do not know the atrocities that goes on in these plantations it’s beautiful outside but rotten inside” watching this documentary , now I understand what she meant 💔
After watching this documentary I was so moved, I never realized our own mothers are going through this and later come at home and care for us whole heartedly, as if nothing happened to the. I feel unimaginable pain. Dear God Liberate our Mothers.
This is not just about one industry, but rather a statistic representation of the pervasive issue of sexual harassment and violence in all industries. It's time to recognize that company policies alone are not enough - we must take concrete action to protect women and ensure their safety.
Agreed, this film gives me goosebumps because this is only about one specific company and product: tea. What of all the others where no journalists have investigated?
I Hope that an organisation will step forward and sue the company. For all those who’ve got AIDS from them and who’ve been harassed and abused and that they have to pay compensation
To all the women who have experienced sexual abuse while looking for work, we stand with you. Your experience is not something that defines you. It's never easy to speak up about abuse, but it's important to know that you are not alone. You deserve to feel safe and respected in your work environment. You are not to blame for the abuse you experienced, Stay strong and know that you are not alone.
My mom was raised to be wife ! and she was wise woman who chose A man to be her provider, protector, leader, while she was home mother, actually that was her choice , she could have chosen to be looking for work but she didn't , Every Girl on this earth has choice to be AMOTHER AND BE HOME MAKER, (WIFE ) MARRY REAL MAN but this baloney of career and money thing is trap that many don't see forth coming consequences,
@@samuelagwotu5074 I will get married to a REAL MAN and I will work. As a lady choosing to work does not negate me being a wife and a homemaker. But hey, it's a free country.

Getting Catie to report to HR to see if they would investigate was just *chef's kiss*. Just proves how these companies policies are all talk. Also how Catie removed weeds for a FULL 8 WEEKS is just amazing, I have so much respect for her
The director should fires all managers and employ new team of managers especially those professionals who have work as seasonal at tea estates and not been confirmed permanent and have qualification to run the sector instead of appoint unqualified personnel whom they end up forgetting the actual business and running up misusing the resources and embarking nepotism and conflict of interest or harassment.
@@duncankipkirui1935 The "Director" should be executed or castrated, at least, alongside all of the managers. You are naive to think they aren't in on it. Shit runs downhill.
Decades of sexual abuse and we still haven't boycotted these companies? It has taken me over 4 months to fully watch this and it's heart-wrenching in every way. Can BBC do a follow-up of what happened after this expose, we cannot just let such stories die. All women who have suffered under these sexual goons need justice
Can you imagine he remained as the Director like nothing happened and was even re-elected. But there's hope, He was stopped from assuming Office by the High Court last week.
That's ow yoy have destroyed the West...why should companies suffer for individuals... do u know how many people will lose livelihoods because of such radical *diocy? Cancel culture should is nor a solution. Let the culprits pay....that's punitive enough
Many Kenyan companies have an endemic issue with sexual violence & it’s about time these managers were brought to book. Thank you Tom Odula & BBC for this
I live in America and I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been sexually harassed at work. It’s disgusting and it makes you feel dirty. Luckily, I was able to quit my job and move to another job. These women do not have a choice because that is the only job there is there in their village and they have children. It’s heartbreaking 💔. Africa needs to have their own ME TOO movement and name and shame these men in public. I don’t drink tea but if I did I would definitely boycott.
naming and shaming doesn't do anything. in fact for a victim to believe its emotionally equivalent is heart breaking to think the most damning thing about being assaulted was the social shame.
me too but unfortunately pretty much any other job / workplace / neighborhood is just full of the same thing all over again. because that's what the world is full of
This is really hurting, I am in tea industry in Kericho too after having worked in James Finlay too from 2000. I am really shocked! We women in tea have really suffered!! Men really look down on women in so many aspects there's got to be a major survey on this issues including work related molestation, greavances and failure to be promoted including sexual harrasment. We invite more of this and the government should consider chipping in too. Women leaders where are you?? Fida where are you?? We thank the union Kericho branch for trainings that has been conducted so far!! Kujeni nyote we are ready to reveal more!
i personally don't think is a good idea placing all men under one basket.. i mean we got good people out her so you saying men look down on women is way wrong coz its just some men .. plus sexual harassment do happen towards both genders i mean nowadays even old women in top positions do ask for sex in exchange of jobs.. bt now that this involves women harassment does it mean all men are at fault???
The victims need to be compensated. Sexual abuse, broken homes, HIV, strenuous work, low wages, and compromise of their health, etc. These companies should compensate the victims.
The reality is that the same is not only happening in tea farms but also in all public and private offices in all sectors! To hell with these horrific acts.
As a man who has a sister I'd kill for. This makes me truly scared, angry, anxious, worried and speechless!!!. I feel ashamed but thankfully we have amazing better men out there like the journalists, myself & a few many others.
I know you mean no harm... but I think we should respect people just because they are human beings, not because we have a sister or a mom or a daughter. We don't have to have a personal relationship with a gender to be able to empathize with them. Again, I know you mean no harm.
I can only imagine the pain, the guilt these women carry in their heart and also the desperation knowing that they have to do this to feed their kids... Men like Jeremiah deserve very long prison sentences.
My heart goes out to all the women around the world who have been sexually abused while looking for something to put on the table so that their children do not go to bed on an empty stomach. I feel your pain. You are my heroines! And may God bless you and show your children a better a world where no one see them as a sex object 🙏
It’s absolutely heartbreaking to hear these women tell their stories. Permanent injury, HIV, work constantly being used to essentially force them to have sex with their supervisors…and the companies who employ them trying to cover their asses while saying it’s not the huge problem that it is. CEOs and other execs and shareholders that don’t give a damn what women on the other side of the world go through, so long as they can make more profits. Shame on all of them, shame on the ones that weren’t investigated in this video, but likely have the same rampant abuse. Shame on companies that don’t care who suffers, so long as they are bringing in more and more profit. I feel for the men in this video too. They suffer the same painful injuries as the women from working in the fields, and they get tossed aside, made redundant, with no warning in a place with little other jobs available. Profit at the cost of human dignity and lives, that’s what these multinational corporations are all about, and the suffering have no recourse when these people can pay their way out of anything. Until the entire world starts caring more about what happens behind the products they buy, caring about the working conditions for everyone regardless of where they are and what their work is, I’m afraid it won’t change. I really hope a lot of people see this and start demanding action be taken against companies and people like this.
@@everymanisyourteacher9951 This happens constantly in the west. From coaches to teachers to employers in many companies. It's rampant in the west so let's point fingers at one group of men's.
If these companies do nothing to protect these women and prosecute these men, then grocery stores around the world should stop carrying their brands and we as consumers should all stop drinking them. This is unconscionable!
I was on attachment in one of the flower farms in Thika 8 years ago. My supervisor was a man. At that time I didn't understand why he told me never to go to any department by myself, and that I should always notify him in which greenhouse I was. But he probably saved me from a lot of trouble. One time I was excited to drive the truck carrying waste material, I forgot to say where I was going. With me, there were 2 guys, and the dumping area was a bit bushy .on coming back, he asked me where I was, who I was with and if anything had happened..me I was just excitedly telling him how I drove the truck ..the look on his face only relaxed when I said nothing had happened....I was lucky, but maybe someone else wasn't

I am still shaken by the fact that some of the managers have been working for 26 years!! Can you imagine 26 years of this atrocities on women? This screams a death bed every time you see tea plantations in Kericho.
This is just but a representation of what happens in all sectors in Kenya. This includes even students on attachments and internship. It's heartbreaking especially if you can relate.

The most disturbing thing when you actually think about it is that this happens in ALL industires, not just tea farming. EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM. It's disgusting and sad to know that perpetrators like this may not be jailed.
Western companies brought jobs to China. Western citizens lost their jobs. Huawei CFO admitted to selling to Iran. It took her few years of being housebound and the thought of prison again, she finally admitted her guilt. Can we trust a country who manipulates the stock market like China? I rather have US dollar the primary currency. See what happened to crypto. Many checks and balances in the US. Politicians and CEOs are elected and monitored by people. They steal, they are caught and prisoned or fined. Do you still trust countries who threaten to bomb you any minute now or politicians who elect themselves ? Hoorah the USA
This multinational companies not small companies ones and we have to support the small. I have do it for a long time and also only the company in my company most time for my city.
Hiv in Africa is huge because people are malnourished of nutrition and vitamins, proper sanitation facilities and access to clean water. There is Also alcohol, drugs but then you also have people in Africa used as guinea pigs when it comes to vaccinate trials. Instead of giving them access to the basic necessities like what I mentioned they...give them "synthetic materials directly into bodies" weakening them even more!!
Also the testing rate is set higher for hiv than other countries, meaning that people with malnutrition deficiency etc test positive for hiv when the terrain is the source of the problem!!..they don't want to give them access to good nutritional foods and clean water and safe health care. There's no profit in nutrition!
My own mother went through this in the 1970s in Hawaii. She got a job cleaning hotel rooms which is considered a very good job, but the manager changed the requirement for the job that she must have sex with him, so she quit. She eventually found another job that didn't have such requirements.
The British colonial tea mononpoly company should take responsibility for allowing this to happen in their workplace without any action in place to stop it. All they care for is profit.
Sometimes you blame the colonialists for nothing. This was a job given to locals. It is your own people exploiting your sisters. If the British came to manage it for you to ensure it stops you would still lament that they are taking your jobs away. We have a rotten society full of tribalism, corruption and sexual exploitation. The British cannot give you jobs then do it for you. Blame the perpetrators not the British.
My heart bleeds as a father to daughters and a husband. It's disheartening the levels of desperation and mental torture that these managers put the women through just to exploit them sexually in exchange for a job and renewal of contracts. I can imagine the women's anxiety. These predators should face jail time.
I remember another documentary of the same nature. The women were lure into sex trafficking in another country Italy. Many women got pregnant and their children were taken from them. The Europeans were behinds the scenes using the black men and women to lure them in. It is black peoples being used to bemuse The Europeans as well in America take advantage of peoples of colors, Historically.
@Stuart MacPherson France has less than 1% convictions on rape accusations. It is a pandemic, sexual assault. Gang rape has it's own special name in France, tournantes. Look up Samira Bellil - a real martyr. The truth is the world is uncivilized. Human trafficking takes place in every "civilized" country. Women and children disappear everyday in the West. There are few if any countries that are exceptions, and none of those are in "The West". I highly doubt any country is without it. You are using circular logic. Taking responsibility for themselves would involve killing/castrating their attackers - and then they would be put in jail for assault or murder and not believed about being sexually assaulted. The U.S. has decent laws about self-defense but you aren't allowed to have guns in much of Europe. Force multipliers are the real answer, but only if they are allowed to take action without ruining their lives even further. The circle of silence is the biggest issue: not being believed. This is also compounded by the issue of false accusations, especially by women in the West. So it takes a court case for each situation. "Gang grooming" is very common in Europe, sadly.
@Stuart MacPherson You just blatantly supported racial segregation and have the gall to blame people from other countries and act like no Frenchman (or woman) has ever committed rape, that rape doesn't exist in Europe on it's own. Your logic is non-existent, and you are projecting your racism onto me. Get a brain, nimrod.
@Stuart MacPherson yes the civilised Europe where child predators are ministers and work in the government. Really acting as if there isn't endemic se#ual harassment and r@pe in Europe. How naive are just that in Europe those ceo. Execs, principals have money to cover up. Alps the issue of sex tourism where by the lovely European gentleman pay to se#ually exploit children in other countries during holidays. Then go back home to their wives and children. Go also look at the amount of normalised se#ual violence in relationships even just in the UK. Predators are not based in one nation or even in one class they are everywhere. In churches, schools. Board rooms, universities etc.
But it's men like you who never seeks to find and look at the root of a problem, where it all began, and just rent shit about defining men, who made this interview, a man!!
To defend other men!!!!How many billions of men are we in the world? Are we all some weirdo out to molest women? And hasn't this issue beign brought forth by a man?..
i felt into tears after seeing this. i am raised in tea plantation, and if this is what our parents are going through to raise our school fees, it encourage me to work smart in order to take them out from that hell.
I was sexually harassed by my boss at an Italian restaurant in our town when I was in my late teens and early twenties. I was about 19 when I started there or 18 yrs old. I reported him to the police with my younger sister who was a minor at the time as she is 3 yrs younger. He did it to her as well and most of his young female employees and adult females. He only employed young girls and women. He never employed boys or men.
The car conversation in this video reminded me of that time when I had to get a lift from my boss as he wouldn't let me walk home even though he let some others walk home alone. He never had sex with us or anything but he touched us without our consent and we both told him no when we were working separately from each other but had to get a lift alone with him. He would insist that I sat in the front seat and I didn't want to. He touched my legs, back, face and shoulders. I didn't want him to touch me at all. He was my college friends Dad and my boss. He was in a position of power over us and did the same to my sister when she worked on different days. We would turn down the lift but he insisted pretending it was to keep us safe but he really wanted to get one of us alone so he could invade our personal space without consent. He used the fact that he was liked and powerful in town and we'll known as people wouldn't believe that he would be a creep like that. One day I told my sister that I was going to report our boss to the police and my sister then told me that he did the same things to her and others too. Even though my boss could organise paying us at the end of the last shift of the week, he refused to do that and made sure that he called us in one by one as young female staff on our days off. We said we couldn't and he said we must and that he didn't have time to sort it out on another day when we would be working. He would get me to have some tea or coffee and some ice cream. I didn't want to have anything, I just wanted to get paid and go home. He did the wages in the evening or the afternoons so they could be paid in our last shifts but he made us pick them up alone. While his wife and kids were at home. He would make me sit next to him, when I went to get my wages. He touched my legs and arms. He moved his chair closer so he could touch me. I moved my chair away from him, then he moved closer again. He was such a creep, a perve and he deliberately employed young girls and women to get access to them. I saw his profile on Facebook, even though he is retired now. He is grooming women and girls in other ways, by chatting with them at thier work when they served him. He would seem nice I'm sure and insist they meet up with him for coffee. I saw in the comments and his profile statuses that he met up with a shop assistant from Tesco regularly and there was photos of him hugging her and touching her shoulders. Giving her gifts and going for coffee with her. He was an old guy when I was in my 20's he must be in his 60s or 70s now maybe. It makes me feel sick that he is still doing it and noone else has been brave enough to report him to the police. He is in the rotary club and because of that people are scared to report him as too many people will defend him and say he's just being friendly and he's Italian it's how they are very touchy feely. It's no excuse to touch people without consent especially when they say no again and again. My sister and I gave our statements to the police and another girl decided to give a statement too but she got scared and backed out. Even though she gave a statement she retracted it so then the police didn't go ahead with the rest of the investigation. My sister talked to other girls but even though the said it made them uncomfortable. Some defended him and said it was wrong but he's just a friendly guy. Some wanted to report him but were too scare to do so. So our case was reported but we couldn't get him arrested. He was able to keep doing it for yrs to other vulnerable girls and women before he retired and after he retired by chatting with women at thier jobs and meet with up with them alone. My old boss from yrs ago made my skin crawl and made me feel unsafe. If that other girl went ahead to give evidence in court with us if it went that far we could have gotten further in trying to get him arrested and charged. He only got a verbal warning not to do it again and if he did he would be arrested and put in jail immediately, then he would have to go to court then. Sadly even though he continued to do it no one else was brave enough to report him and take it further. So he was free to be alone with women other than his wife. Who possibly knew what he was doing but refused to believe it was anything other than being too friendly. After we reported him we both quit and I saw his daughter every day on the bus to College. She used to talk to me a lot as we were friends. She blanked me and gave me evil looks and hated me and my sister for reporting him. We were not in the wrong he was the one committing a crime every day and getting away with it. It makes me angry that he is able to continue to do that. He wife let's him get away with it without calling him out on it or divorcing him. She's still with him.
Sometimes it's hard to watch these documentaries because of the brutal truth and evil acts amongst us. But these women are so powerful and courageous. It's not easy to relive constant abuse. Thank you to everyone who brought this to light. I hope the predators are punished to the fullest extent to cause such inhumane pain and hardships.
yes very true, the history of exploitation isn't history it's in the present. I'm Canadian and half American and alot of white people especially in the USA really are disgusting when they say there is no issue with race.
Sickening documentary and I hope our authorities bring these monsters to justice. Since my childhood, I've been involved in tea farming and even own few bushes of my own. I've never witnessed these grotesque atrocities in our place. We stand with you fellow tea pickers
I went to Kenya many years ago and heard a news report while there that girls are failing in the school system due to sexual abuse! 1 in 3 girls are abused, which also occurs at school, it was shocking. I made attempts to engage people in such conversations in a social consciousness context, but it was difficult. Unfortunately by the time girls are women such behavior is reoccurring! However the fact that a Kenyan news channel reported such means it's recognized by Kenyans and they have laws to protect children but continue to struggle like most of the world with protection of women and children! Tougher sentences, an overhaul of the justice system may deter some of this damaging abuse! Men and boys need education alongside girls and women globally to highlight attitudes of sexism/abuse to create a safer world!
This is happening in our country,Kenya in every sphere of life.I am a widow for over ten years and the men in my neighborhood started posting and sending funny texts in my phone under fake names, others invite me into bars etc because they wanted to take advantage of the little I may have remained with or help in processing property transfers in the process asking favours etc. The same men would await my daughter on the way,get her phone number and next you hear one inviting her into a restaurant, the same man who invited me into a bar🥱. There's no where to report such harassment because everywhere you go,you find such men who want to come into your house and continue the cycle. It's an evil that need to be dealt with from every level.
The fact that Starbucks did not bother to give a statement is sad. I strongly pray these women get the justice they deserve and more job opportunities where they can safely work and provide for their children
This is a very disturbing story. Well done to the reporter, and to the woman who went undercover for exposing this horror. I’m so desperately sorry to the women who are abused by these disgusting excuses for men.

Learn British colonial rule: plantations tea is sitting on was forcefully taken by British. Owners murdered, maimed and evicted. Never compensated to date.
We cannot claim to be a progressive nation especially in one of the most capitalized sectors in Kenya when this is what goes on behind the scenes. It isn't a community, or one gender problem anymore, sexual harrassment has to be addressed by these brands, and the government at large too. Thank you for shedding light on this!
In our school curricula, we should teach that sex is not a source of entertainment for boys or men but a mutually beneficial interaction. This is evidence of brutal experiences women and girls go through
This was absolutely heartbreaking. Listening to the lady at the beginning sobbing. Sexually abused so her family can eat. Thank you for this investigation. We need to fight this with our purses. We need to support the women to form their own cooperatives and buy the tea from them. From companies run by mothers who work in safe conditions, free from abuse & rape and with sufficient breaks and access to decent occupational Health.
You have a good point there but it’s all say say say If action has to be taken, you start at the political level while also doing community campaigns to give these women a voice and a space for safety. Now in a continent full of corruption, it’s going to take a lot lot of time for change to occur. Especially at the power/ government level.
Thank you Tom Odula for an in depth reporting of topics that are often overlooked by the main stream media. I’m appalled by the behaviors of those men. Katie….this must have been so traumatizing. You rock lady !!!!
This is a problem all over Kenya. Even in the hospitals. There you are put on probation for 2-3 months with no payment. Sexual demands are common. And not to mention extremely low payment. It is so sad to watch such a great country being destroyed by corruption.
Wah, I applaud Kate, she really put herself in an uncomfortable situation so as to help Tom tell the victims story. From literally doing the manual labor for weeks to going into a hotel room with a know sexual predator, hongera Kate. You have made us see what sexually assaulted victims go though. Good work Tom, also engage the public, let us know how we can help, is there a foundation for victims, how can we reach out and offer our assistance? Anyone who has ever been a victim, I pray that you find peace, that you heal, it was not your fault and you didn’t deserve that ❤️ 🙏🏿

We have seen even foundations saying they are there to improve schools or build water pumps and they make promises, take pictures for their propaganda and that's it. Nothing ever changes. In fact, most of the owners of these foundations are also involved in pyramid schemes and need ways to clean their cash...

The managers sound exactly like the Kenyan cops. The whole thing is heart wrenching to see what women have to go through to make ends meet. How inhuman have we gotten as a society. As a woman l can't explain the pain l feel for the victims. I pray that justice prevails for these women. Ladies let us teach our boys how to respect women right from the word go. This is the outcome of a lawless society. Sad indeed!
A lawless society that's a result of western education in many ways, from the top post of the country. This is completely unacceptable, a completely rotten authority that's utterly destroying the financially marginalised.
To everyone involved in the production, Great work! Thank you for being a voice to the voiceless and starting conversations that have been shied away form quite some time. To the women, I'm heartbroken and wish you nothing but healing and justice.
Everyday I keep saying this: “the day exploitation, bribery, corruption and extortion will die in Africa, Africa will rise and be great again”. We are our own enemies and we need to stop doing to others what we wouldn’t want others to do to us. This is one of the main problems we face in Africa and everyday I feel bad for my sisters, mothers, aunties and ppl’s wives or girlfriends. See how beautiful and fertile the land looks yet corruption won’t allow our leaders to help the youth which leads many into troubles they weren’t prepared for, whilst others are taking advantage of others leanest and weakness. I pray for all the women that has been harassed and abused sexually especially my African people 😢. I’m rooting for y’all stay strong very soon everything will be fine and the abusers will surely get what they deserve love from Ghana 🇬🇭.
The issue with Africa is our self esteem. Was so badly broken that we're always looking for European countries for validation. We're at a point where we can't even open our own borders for other Africans to travel to other African countries. We have pride amongst ourselves, but willingly open our arms for foreigners. I just hope one day we'll unite and grow our own markets ourselves.

This rot is extreme. The perpetrators should be arrested and not just suspended. My heart is bleeding on behalf of all those women who have had to go through all this just to put food on the table. Sexual harassment is a monster that is destroy so many young lives. This cuts across both men and women. So sad. Kate you did well, felt so scared every time u got compromised.
This is infuriating. Lost for words. How in God’s name are we gonna fix this country? It’s true what was said about our courts being bought, so what hope do Kenyans have? Just heartbreaking…
It makes hearts melt when you see perverted sexual predators exploiting our women, knowing they desperately need the job to simply survive. I worked with Unilever for over 5 years in corporate centre London and always thought it's one of the best companies in world to work for. I hope Unilever has not only sacked this guy but have handed over compensation package to all his victims.
I'm shedding a tear because this is outright wrong why would you do this to these poor women and even worse knowing that you are HIV positive and still insist on sleeping with them without protection. Maybe Unilever doesn't care but God surely does, and my prayers are with these women and anyone else who goes through such ordeals. Kudos to the undercover lady she went out her way for us to be able to see all this Bless you so much.
Due to such stories I feel so angry and sad often times. I work and live in West Africa, I am white, European. Not Western. My country became liberated decades after most of these African ones. I work very hard, doing my best, yet by such worms , as Unilever, all of us foreign whites are put under this box of "wickeds" or locally called "obrunies". Also I am deeply mad by the pretence of these ex colonial countries as the Netherlands or England, while these two's corporation keeps exploiting innocent people. They pretend to be so human and justiceful. Making those grand gestures to clean their dirty conscious of greed and damage they did for centuries, while for their money they let desperate women getting infected with HIV due to rape?! What kind of a sick world is this?! But let me add: in my oppinion the locals also have a big guilt and things to be deeply ashamed of. They cannot blame only the company for this disgrace they do to women. One sad thing is that these workers suffer by mistreatment in order for profit maximalising, but why do they have to make things even worse? I am speechless by this docu and feeling bitter, sad. Noone deserves this. Noone! All my love, best wishes I send for these victims and I hope justice arrives to them. ❤
Sexual harassment is something that has been overlooked for the longest time. I once taught in one of the leading girl's High school in Kenya, and the plight of female teachers in that school is simply overwhelming.
How sad. The fact that women survive this is mind boggling. Women are stronger than men in many ways. Imagine that girl gang raped by four men n still goes back to work!!!!!!!! No penalties for the perpetrators.
I would like to see a follow up. These companies all make claims at the end of this video, and there are some police investigations going on. To me it is important to know, what happened. Did the companies actually improve and kept those words ??? Did any justice prevail, in any of the court cases ??? Did any of the abused women get any help, medically, financially or otherwise ??? Though Tom is really a great reporter, I find him to very informative, but only bringing this to light without seeing a follow up would be a bad thing. If changes are to be made, this and other topics need to stay in the minds of people, thus need to be continually addressed and follow up, else when the "news value" is no longer there, the old ways/practices continue on, and that does not only reflect bad on companies (which I don't care about), but it will hurt women and that is NEVER good.
In these situation we should actually blame our law enforcement officers. Why is it that these ladies can't go to the Police to report these men? It is because they know the place won't do anything! That is where the root of the problem is.
They work with separate contracted companies for sourcing their product so, like all huge cooperations, they just "pass the buck" and point fingers at eachother.

What hurts me the most is not the sexual harrasssment in it's generality. Representing millions of unemployed Kenyan youths, this is something we are exposed to over and over again, in ALL organisations, ironically even the top most government offices where one should feel safest; but our mothers, these men are doing these unspeakable acts to our mothers! Tears. Just 😢 😢
The average female, agricultural (tea) field laborer, earns per month about 8109 KES = 53.51 GBP, Pound Sterling. For a 200 hour month in the hot sun this translates into 0.27 GBP / hour. Maybe its also time the BBC looked into other exploitation by Unilever? Unilever Kenya Ltd owns PG Tips and Lipton. It is a Private Limited Company, founded in 1949, in Nairobi, Kenya. The organisation is owned by British based enterprises. To truly stop the rape of these women the shareholders / owners need to be confronted and held accountable for the obscene misuse of fellow human beings on more than only the sexual assault issue, like 21st century SLAVERY!!!! Rape is a police issue; INHUMAN labour explotation is EVERYONES' ISSUE!!!

Sad these men must be sick how do you sleep with all those human beings surely...if its not sex addiction they are spreading a deadly virus..who has unprotected sex with random people if they arent infected🤔theyve spread hiv on a massive scale to almost a whole town plus the husbands..they should be sued
Finally!!! Someone says it!!! Like, there are at least two predators in the video. How can these women be sustainably supported, and how much has the BBC put towards it?
@@KazMaw1 does the BBC gain goodwill/reputation and/or finance/stock appreciation from producing these documentaries? Who owns the story and should the women benefit from the proceeds? Will the women on these farms face a hostile environment in retaliation to and/or over-consciousness about this video? It's very possible to donate, whoever how will this handle the root problem? Or we will be donating to all being misused and for how long? First let's start fighting for these predators to be scrapped off and make our women safe.

Suspension of the perpetrators is not enough, they should be arrested and prosecuted, my thoughts go out to the abused women, you deserve justice.

That was painful, especially to the mother who had no choice but to let her daughters get in the hands of the people who abused her.

Africans do this all over their space. What is wrong with us and why must we blame others for our problems?
@Stuart MacPherson France has an accountability issue, and you clearly have a racist issue.

Thank you for bringing this out.
Sorry that happened to you it seems this is a problem all over the world.

What authorities? The Kenyan police is no différent from the warthog of a manager you see here! Sab but true
It's crazy how quick a man uses the small power he has against others whenever he can and we wonder why God the all mighty wants us to serve him.

If changes are to be made, this and other topics need to stay in the minds of people, thus need to be continually addressed and follow up, else when the "news value" is no longer there, the old ways/practices continue on, and that does not only reflect bad on companies (which I don't care about), but it will hurt women and that is NEVER good.
the unwillingness of these tea companies to enact justice is horrifying
In these situation we should actually blame our law enforcement officers. Why is it that these ladies can't go to the Police to report these men? It is because they know the place won't do anything! That is where the root of the problem is.
