    9:40 Pilots were like rockstars back in the day. All the passengers traveled in formal wear, all the flight attendants were attractive women. Most of the airline pilots back then had flown in WW2 or Korea so people admired them as war heroes. It was a glamorous thing

    Technically, you used to not require a law degree to take the BAR exam. So, if he actually did pass the BAR, he actually WOULD have been an attorney.

    • @YankeeBlues21
      @YankeeBlues21 2 года назад +8

      This is the case where you’ll often come across the phrase “read law” when reading about historical figures who practiced history (like “Lincoln read law before becoming an attorney”), it generally meant somebody was studying law informally while working for an established lawyer (like an apprenticeship) before becoming licensed, but didn’t necessarily get a JD from a university.

    I heard him interviewed like 10-15 years ago. He's on the straight and narrow but said that he could EASILY run new, up-to-date scams that would be worth millions....even with all the modern"safeguards" in place. He'd already worked out how to work around all the security that's in place The guy's brilliant. An "evil genius" if you will....yet fascinating to listen to.
    Great vid, man!

    "all these movies based on real people are constantly blowing my mind"
    that's why they say that truth is stranger than fiction.
    it's also why people that like history complain al lot: it's not that we want documentaries, it's that the real story is usually more interesting than the clichés they use
    PS: the real frank abagnale doesn't like the film because he says that it portrays it as if he was having a lot of fun, when in reality he was scared and lonely

    • @tsdobbi
      @tsdobbi 2 года назад

      Frank Abignale jr. is still a con man. Most of the crap he's said is not supported by the evidence. There have been many investigations into his claims and most were found to be BS.
      i.e. the whole Pilot thing. Abignale just fooled a family into thinking he was a pilot for a brief time when he was 21. He wasn't jetsetting around the world pretending to be a Pan-Am pilot fleecing a big corporation of money. He pretended to be a pilot to use some regular folks and manipulate their trust and stole blank checks from them.
      Pretty much all of his stories he told himself are outright lies or greatly exaggerated. He makes money off of his fame. This false history is just another con for him.
      We have actual records. From 17-20, when Abignale claimed he was jetsetting around the world for Pan-Am....he was in jail.....the entire time. There is proof he was in jail..... Even throughout the rest of his early 20's he was in and out of jail for petty crimes. He never escaped from jail.
      It wasn't until his last prison stint in 1974 that he got the idea to come up with his "storied history" and sell it. The FBI has never supported the narrative that Abignale worked for them. It's all lies and he got rich from it.

    In case you're wondering about that opening scene, they used footage from an episode of the panel show "To Tell the Truth" from around 1977 in which the real Frank Abignale was the subject of a particular game. If you think the movie was crazy, you should read his autobiography. He exploits were so much wilder and bolder than the movie shows. Another great reaction. 👍👍

  • @476429
    @476429 2 года назад +11

    He gave a talk at Google a few years ago that's available on RUclips. He basically retells the story but provides some information that was not in the movie. He also mentions a few spots where the movie had to take some liberties. There weren't many, and they were insignificant. All the things in the movie that seem unbelievable did actually happen. If anything, the movie didn't capture how much he got away with.
    You said it's hard to believe he was actually able to fly for free in the cockpit. Pan Am estimates that he flew more than a million miles on at least 260 flights going to 26 different countries. He definitely flew . . . a lot.
    One thing to remember is that he did not look like DiCaprio. At 16, he was over six feet tall and had already started balding. He could easily pass for 30. You can find pictures of him from that time period online. He looks like a bona fide airline pilot.
    Also, pilots were rock stars back then. Even when I was a little kid in the late 1970s, they were still seen that way. Stewardesses were seen as glamorous jet setters-almost like fashion models. Wearing a pilot's uniform gave him instant credibility. They were held in the same esteem as doctors or lawyers.

    Check out Basketball Diaries, it's based on Jim Carroll's autobiography and DiCaprio does an AMAZING job playing Jim Caroll. Also stars Mark Wahlberg, Juliette Lewis, Lorraine Bracco, Michael Imperioli, Ernie Hudson, Michael Rapaport and Jim Carroll actually shows up in the movie in a small role.
    It's a gritty intense movie about NYC Street kids, basketball, drug addiction and a whole lot more. Very underrated movie.

    Ps hevwasnt a psoseopath- he dod have the gift of being able to read people , figure out what they wanted, and play that role. But the nanipulation didnt seem to be rooted in the idea of manipulating people beingbhis high because it reinforced his I dea that hebis superior - like a psoseopath does. And he wasnt conscience-less likeca psoseopath. They kniw people expect emotion and can fake it but they gave no guilt or remorse. The emotions he displayed seemed genuine. Its a term people misunderstand alot - sone even believing its a socually awkward person which is polar opposite of the truth - but as a victim of one psoseopaths are hard to recognize until youve been a victim and understand it enough to know what yo look for

    The best cops and robbers/ cat and mouse game was in the anime series Death Note (not the live action one). One of the best shows I've ever seen, and I don't even like anime.

    Thanks for your reaction. When you have time, check out the real Frank on the Johnny Carson show talking about his life. Incredible.

    Have you seen The Fugitive starring Harrison Ford? That's a cop cat and mouse game, and probably the best one I've seen. In movie form at least.

    Somebody needs to react to BALLS OF FURY (2007). A hilarious movie about Ping Pong starring Christopher Walken
